Chemistry MAJORING IN CHEMISTRY Chemistry majors are provided with a foundation for graduate study in chemistry or preparation for a career as a professional chemist in industry and research. This program also prepares students for secondary school teaching and to careers in medicine such as dentistry, optometry, and other health related vocations. Upon graduation, students have a rich variety of career path possibilities. Some Davis & Elkins graduates have attended graduate school, earning a doctorate in chemistry, while others have been accepted into post-professional schools such as pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary and engineering schools. Still others have directly entered the work force as high school teachers or technicians in a variety of technically-oriented companies, earning good salaries. Why Davis & Elkins College? We offer small classes (with a student-faculty ratio of 16:1) taught by extraordinary faculty dedicated to your academic success. e College offers students three different Chemistry tracks. e General Chemistry program provides students with a foundation for graduate study in chemistry or preparation for a career as a professional chemist in industry and research. is program also prepares students for secondary school teaching and to careers in medicine such as dentistry, optometry, and other health related vocations. e Chemistry - Pre-medical program is for students who do not wish to pursue the general Chemistry track, but plan to continue their education in the medical field. In addition, this program also prepares students for employment in industry and research. e Chemistry - Secondary Education program is coordinated with the education department. e program is designed for students who want to meet the requirements for teaching Chemistry in middle, junior high and senior high schools. Active Learning Chemistry majors at Davis & Elkins College have many opportunities to explore their talents and intellectual prowess as undergraduates in a scientific field. A wide range of in- house research projects are available for student involvement, including the synthesis of novel organic and bioinorganic compounds, spectroscopic studies of organic and bioinorganic molecules, kinetic studies of highly reactive organic compounds, and the development of novel statistical methods for determining acid strengths. Students also have opportunities to conduct specialized research under well-known professors at other universities under the National Science Foundation (NSF) program called Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). ese internships not only equip students for a position in their area of interest, they also test and confirm genuine interests in particular fields, and contribute to strong résumés when students graduate and seek employment.
