42 - 024Syntheses of Birnessites Using Alcohols as Reducing Reagents:Effects of Synthesis Parameters on the Formation of Birnessites. —Synthetic birnessite, an octahedral layered Mn oxide material called OL-1, canbe synthesized with Na+, K+, Na+/Mg2+, or K+/Mg2+ ions as interlayercations by redox reactions between permanganate and EtOH in the presenceof alkali metal hydroxide. It is shown that all OL-1 samples have an interlayerspacing of ≈7.0 A. The interlayer space is propped opened by intercalatinghexylammonium ions between the layers, confirming the layered structure. —(MA, YING; LUO, JIAN; SUIB, STEVEN L.; Chem.
