What is chemical engineering?

Imagine saving the lives of pediatric patients through tissue engineering of large vessels and heart valves, or inventing clean-burning alternative fuel from vegetable oil. Earn a degree in chemical engineering, and you could enjoy a career working on projects like these. Chemical engineers have had a hand in creating nearly every product you can imagine, from the medicines that keep us healthy to the plastics that keep us safe in cars to sustainable energy and materials for our future.

Graduate degreesThe College of Engineering offers M.S. and Ph.D. programs in chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, as well as a graduate certificate in polymer engineering.

Why the Wayne State College of engineering?t Internships: Start working in the field before

you even graduate with a large number of internship opportunities.

t Practical experience: Break classroom boundaries by building a concrete canoe, steel bridge, hybrid vehicle and more.

t Scholarships: The college awards up to 100 engineering scholarships annually. The university offers many more.

t Study abroad: Graduate with the global perspective employers love.

t Undergraduate research: Join expert faculty in research from your very first year.

research

Wayne State is known for supporting undergraduate research as early as the freshman year, and the College of Engineering is no exception. In fact, the college recently kicked off its Undergraduate Research Award Matching Fund Program, providing students with support and faculty mentorship on a wide range of research projects.

Chemical engineering majors can get additional hands-on experience by joining the undergraduate Chemical Engineering Research Group. This team encourages scientific exploration in a fun and productive environment, while researching sustainability and alternative energies.

Faculty expertise

As a student in Wayne State’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, you’ll learn from faculty experts who consistently break new ground in the field. For example, as director of the National Biofuels Energy Laboratory, Professor Simon Ng leads critical initiatives in alternative energy development, right here in Detroit. And Professor Howard Matthew was recently elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, comprised of the top 2 percent of medical and biological engineers in the country.

Chemical engineering alumnus Yousif b. Ghafari, PE, FESD, founded a multidisciplinary architectural and engineering firm. After only five years in business, Ghafari Associates, LLC, was named No. 1 in Michigan and No. 34 nationwide on the Inc. 500 list, which ranks the fastest growing privately held firms in the country.

“ I received a level of education I never thought accessible to an undergraduate. Research opportunities are abundant, and grants are available to driven students.”

— Rebecca Lindsey, chemical engineering
