Congratulations,

You now own a piece of equipment that incorporates the latest in carpet cleaningtechnology. The Chem-Dry PowerHeads features will almost certainly increase the produc-tivity of you and your business, while decreasing the fatigue factor that may have preventedyou from going after some of the large cleaning jobs that are available to carpet cleaners andmaintenance professionals today. With competition as strong as it is in most communities, you have invested in not only a cleaning tool, but a marketing tool that will enhance yourprofessional image in every way.

The Chem-Dry PowerHead is REVOLUTIONARY. Your foresight in purchasing thisultimate cleaning machine will be rewarded with the knowledge that you care enough togive your customer the maximum cleaning effectiveness.

Using the PowerHead in your business will turn you into a professional carpet clean-ing operator, rather than a professional laborer.

Once again, congratulations to another Chem-Dry cleaning professional who will notwait for tomorrow, and who will not have to compete against the PowerHead. The compe-tition will have to compete with you!

An Evolution That Had To Happen

Your new PowerHead has been precision engineered to bring you to the state-of-the-art in carpet cleaning. In the past, a wand technician had to supply all the pressure andmotion to do the cleaning. The Powerheads weight distribution and rotary motion enable thetechnician to maneuver the unit easily with less fatigue and without back strain.

The PowerHeads electric motor drives its precision transmission which, in turn, rotates the cleaning head assembly. The Natural® cleaning solution is injected through thecenter of the stainless steel gearbox shaft directly to the five spray jets. Soiled solution isthen extracted from the carpet by five extraction cleaning heads and drawn through thealuminum exhaust manifold to the HCU recovery tank.

Construction

The base, manifolds, handle, gearbox housing, and cleaning heads are all cast ormolded aluminum. Other parts are either metal, stainless steel or high impact plastic.

Operationrequires a one and a half inch (1-½)I.D. and a two (2) O.D. vacuum hosefor proper air flow.

IMPORTANT: The vacuum hose mustbe in good condition to ensure maxi-mum airflow.

3. Electrical Cord Hook-Up: The 50foot electrical cord on your Power-Head is a detachable three-pronggrounded line requiring a three-prong, 15 amp receptacle. A three-prong to two-prong adapter maybe used, providing its ground wireis properly attached to a groundedterminal.

♦ CAUTION ♦

Do not, under any circumstances, re-move the ground prong from your Pow-erHead power cord. Serious injury ordeath may result.

Operating Instructions1. Control Functions: There are

control triggers located on eachside of the handle under therubber hand grips. As you operatethe PowerHead, the trigger on yourright-hand side controls the elec-tric motor that drives the cleaningheads. The Safety switch locatedon the top of the handle must be

Preparation

1. Handle Adjustment: Push the clampforward to loosen the linkage.Adjust the handle to a comfortableheight. Pull clamp back to lock inplace.

NOTE: Most technicians have foundbetter control and less fatigue when thehandle is in a low position-- just aroundthe hip line. There is an ideal positionfor each person which will ensure thePowerHead will do the work for you.

2. Solution and Vacuum Hose Hook-Ups: Your PowerHead is equippedwith two 440 S/S male quickconnects for the dual solution hoseand an one and a half inch (1-½)vacuum hose inlet (refer to the abovephoto). A dual solution hose withthe two 440 female quick connectsis required. The vacuum inlet

depressed while the trigger is pulled.Once the motor is running, thesafety switch can be released. Thismust be done each time the triggeris released and the motor is re-started. This lockout will preventaccidental starting of the motor. Onthe left hand side, the trigger con-trols the low pressure carbonatingsolution spray. The air flows con-stantly while the PowerHead is inoperation.

2. Maneuvering Your PowerHead:Your PowerHead maneuvers like abuffer. To move the PowerHead tothe right, lift the handle slightly. The more you lift or lower thehandle, the faster the PowerHeadwill move.

To move forward and backward, position the handle so that the unitremains stationary, then pushforward or pull back. To familiarizeyourself with your PowerHead, practice on an open carpeted area.Depress both the solution triggerand motor trigger and move thePowerHead slowly in a three to five

foot arc, as shown in CleaningPatterns on the following page.

♦ CAUTION ♦

Do not operate your PowerHead on drycarpets The friction generated by therevolving cleaning heads may damagefibers in the carpet.

Once you have become familiar with thespeed and movement of the machine, practice making it hover in one spot.(The hovering ma-neuver is useful forremoving stubbornstains, as well asremoving furnitureindentations.)

Do not tilt machinesideways whilemoving forwardand backward. Aloss of control mayresult in damage tothe unit or location.

3. Using the Crevice Tool:The crevice tool is located on thefront right-hand side of the PowerHead. To remove, pull the crevicetool upward until the alignmentpin matches the large diameter ofthe key hole slot. Pull the tool awayfrom the PowerHead and it is readyto use. When attaching it backonto the machine, rest the end ofthe tool on the lower elbow andslide the pin into the key hole slot.Gently push the crevice tool into theelbow until it is snug.

Cleaning Information

Damage to both the molding and thecleaning head will result.

2. DO NOT operate your PowerHead onhardwood floors.

3. DO NOT operate your PowerHeadover loose or unraveled carpetseams. The cleaning head may catchand cause further damage.

4. DO NOT operate your PowerHead onconcrete floors. It will develop sharpedges on the extraction heads thatwill damage carpet fibers.

5. DO NOT clean over the edge of aloose carpet. Instead, clean only upto the edge. Damage may occurshould the extraction heads catchthe loose carpet.

Special InformationDuring the cleaning of some plush car-pets, you may notice a pilling effect. With an PowerHead, loose yarns formballs and are kicked aside as the clean-ing heads revolve. This is normal whenaggressive cleaning or even normalvacuuming takes place, as evidenced bya number of dead, loose yarns in thevacuum cleaner bag. These loose yarns,in most cases, are short staple yarns orfiller yarns used to give the carpeta denser appearance. Because yourPowerHead weighs approximately

Cleaning PatternsFor regular carpet cleaning, use an over-lapping arc pattern, two times over thesame area (one pass with solution andone pass for drying). When cleaningcarpets, first clean in circular pattern, then use the overlapping arc pattern todry the area.Note: Dirtiest areas may require twoor more cleaning passes. Using either

pattern, you should develop a comfort-able rhythm. To obtain maximum per-formance from your PowerHead, moveit slowly and deliberately with a 50%overlap, giving it time to clean and ex-tract. (Unlike a manual wand, the Pow-erHead is doing the work you had to doin the past) A steady pace rather thana frenzied one will increase efficiencyand production and decrease fatigue.

The Following Cautions ShouldBe Observed While Cleaning:

1. DO NOT operate your PowerHeadover metal floor moldings.

Page 9: Chem-Dry PowerHead Owner's Manual - Interlink Supply Chem-dry... · Once again, congratulations to another Chem-Dry cleaning professional who will not wait for tomorrow, and who will

70 pounds and rests on five four-inchcleaning heads, the yarns are not suckedup into the vacuum heads as they arewith a vacuum cleaner or old-style clean-ing wand.

♦ CAUTION ♦

The PowerHead may cause further dam-age to older, rubber-backed, glued downcarpets that may be delaminating withage. When in doubt, DO NOT use yourPowerHead.

Cleaning HintsA. Most cleaners customarily clean their

way out of an area or room. Withthe PowerHead, it is possible to cleaninto an area or room, as shown inthe illustration below, so that the

hoses are dragged behind you dur-ing the cleaning process rather thankicked out of the way as you backout of an area. The cleaning intomethod works especially well inhallways or confined areas.

B. The PowerHead is a very aggres-sive carpet cleaning machine andwill leave the carpet with a freshly-cleaned appearance. The carpetshould be brushed or groomed afterthe cleaning process to remove anyswirl marks left behind.

The PowerHead has been very sucess-ful in restoring badly matted traffic lanesin front of doorways and sofas. Evenpivot areas can be brought back to lifeagain, in most cases. Cornrowing inhallways can also be eliminated withminimal effort.

Machine MaintenanceGood care and regular maintenance ofyour PowerHead will result in a long, de-pendable life for the unit. Keep in mindthat your PowerHead will be in full viewof your customer. A PowerHead that isdirty and unkempt in appearance cancause your image to suffer. You areoffering your customer the latest incleaning technology. Therefore, it is im-portant that your company image reflectyour desire to give your customer THEBEST.

The surface finish on your PowerHeadis a durable, baked on epoxy coating andis easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Tofurther protect the finish, a light coat ofgood silicon base polish should be ap-plied periodically.

Lubrication and maintenance play a keyrole in the life of your PowerHead.Hence, the following daily and periodicmaintenance steps must be followed.Train yourself to maintain your unit on aregular schedule until it becomes ha-bitual.

Daily Maintenance1. Inspect the power cord for cuts, breaks, etc. Repair as needed.

2. Inspect the vacuum hoses forbreaks or tears. Repair or replaceas necessary.

3. Visually inspect your PowerHead forwater leaks, damage to the clean-ing heads, etc. Repair as neces-sary.

4. Check the jet spray for evenness. An uneven spray will cause im-proper flow of the cleaning solution.

5. Remove the cleaning head. Itunscrews in the same direction itturns duringoperation (orclockwisewhen lookingat it from theunderside).Once youhave loosenedthe assembly, spin it off with your hands. If thecleaning head is difficult to remove, you may use a ¾ inch socketwrench on the exposed center nutlocated under the gearbox cover. Toprevent the gearbox from turning, remove the gearbox cover to exposethe output shaft.

The output shaft will accept a 5/8inch wrench just below the rotaryunion. Wash the cleaning headsand shroud assembly with a gardenhose, being careful not to wet theelectric motor assembly. Clean anylint buildup from the cleaning headsand vacuum hoses (lint buildup willrestrict proper air flow and prolongdrying time). Before cleaning thecleaning head assembly, place therubber stopper (available in theService Kit, Part No. E2000-SK)inside the threaded bore of the hub. This will prevent debris from enter-ing the solution lines and cloggingthe spray jets.

♦ CAUTION ♦

6. Clean off any debris that may haveaccumulated on the gearbox shaftor the inside threaded bore of thehub. An accumulation of debrishere, if not removed, may damagethe gearbox oil seal. This will resultin loss of oil in the gearbox. If thegearbox is operated without oil, severe damage may occur.

7. Lubricate the felt vacuum seal ontop of the hub with a quality, 30weight SAE motor oil. Also, puta few drops into the hub threads.

8. Coat the shaft with Pennz-Guard ora similar lubricant. Reinstall thevacuum head assembly onto theshaft by rotating it counter-clock-wise.

IMPORTANT: While rotating thevacuum head assembly in the counter-clock wise position, make sure that itspins freely all the way down. If itbegins to require the slightest finger tippressure, unscrew it and brush off thethreads. All it takes is the slightest grainof dirt or sand to obstruct the threads. If you turn too far onto a grain of dirt, the hub may become locked onto theshaft of the gearbox.

This will blow all water from the valve, solution line, rotary union and jet as-sembly. Open and close the valve sev-eral times to ensure that all water isremoved.

Periodic MaintenanceCheck the oil level in the gearbox on amonthly basis. This is a permanentlylubricated gearbox. You do not need tochange the oil. However, maintainingthe proper oil level is important. Tocheck the oil level, remove the vent plugand look into the gearbox. Turn thecleaning head until you can see the in-spection hole in the gear. With the Pow-erHead sitting flat on a table or the floor, the oil level should be up to, but notabove, the middle of the gear. If oilneeds to be added, use a quality 80-90weight gear oil.

NOTE: When checking the oil level inthe gearbox, you can use a toothpickas a dip stick. The oil level should read3/8 of an inch.

Transport and/or StorageWhenever your PowerHead is trans-ported or stored, it is recommended thatthe cleaning head be removed. The ma-chine will then sit flat on the floor andremain more stable, especially duringtransport.

Freeze Warning and ProtectionYour PowerHead can sustain damagefrom freezing, as can any equipmentthat functions with the use of water.Care must be taken to protect this toolfrom freezing just as you do your otherequipment. To protect it from freezing, simply blow air from a gas station airhose through the solution quick connectwith the valve open.

RepairRemoval of Components

Felt Vacuum Seal Replacement:

A worn or unlubricated seal will not forma proper seal. Lack of a proper seal willimpair the vacuuming capabilities of theunit and therefore leave behind morewater in the carpet than is desirable.

First, remove the vacuum head assemblyas previously described. Using a pocketknife, carefully pry the seal up and lift itout. If the seal appears worn or glazedso that it will not lubricate well, try turningit over. If that does not work, or if it isdamaged, replace it with a new one. Werecommend changing the felt seal after10 hours of use. Replace it with a spare, soaked seal. Press the seal in place andsaturate it with a quality 30 weight SAEmotor oil. Alwaysplace the flattened, used seal in an oilbath to rejuvenate.NOTE: A tuna fishcan is the right sizeand shape and doesnot require a largeamount of oil (aplastic container for this purpose isincluded in the Service Kit, Part No.E2000-SK) This seal and its conditionplay an important part in the optimumperformance of your PowerHead.

High Pressure Valve Assembly:

The valve assemblys moving parts willeventually wear out in time. Its repair orreplacement is a relatively simpleoperation.

1. Remove the 440 male quick connect(A) with a wrench.

2. Remove the five allen head screws(B) in the back plate on the handleand lift the back panel off.

3. Disconnect the stainless steel hose(C) from the bottom of the valveassembly.

4. Remove the bolt (D) holding thetrigger.

5. Remove the two bolts (E) holding thevalve assembly in the handle and pullout.

6. The valve may now be rebuilt or re-placed.

♦ CAUTION ♦

If the valve has been frozen, inspect itfor leakage before reinstalling the backplate.
