Montpel lier 16Fashionable Montpellier is where the first Cheltenham spring was discovered in 1716. It was named by the developer after the French spa town of the same name in order to promote its reputation as a place for healing and leisure.
The Suffolk s 44Built around a square of very attractive Regency buildings this area takes its name from the Earls of Suffolk and Berkshire, who owned the much of the land in the 1820s and 1830s when this part of town was built.
Tivoli 80The shops and streets of Tivoli began to appear in the 1830s. Since then, the trades found in Tivoli Parade have included a builder’s merchant, coal merchant, cobbler, tailor, confectioner, post office, printer, plumber, painter, grocer, baker, corndealer and innkeeper.
Central / Pittvil le 92
Central Cheltenham has developed a number of major shopping areas and arcades that are home to some very well known national names, but there are also some wonderful indies.
This part of the town became the core focus for commercial development as the population continued to grow and remains a very popular shopping destination. The best way to find indie gems, that are very often hidden away in quieter areas of the town, is to explore!
Bath Road / Leckhampton 126The Bath Road, originally created as a turnpike road between 1813 and 1819, is the central hub for the South of Cheltenham.
Charlton Kings 144Charlton Kings lies along the main London Road to the south east of Cheltenham. Although since April 1974 part of Cheltenham Borough Council, it has retained its separate identity and atmosphere.
A taste of the Cotswolds 160In this exclusive little glimpse we are delighted to present you with some wonderful indie gems that you should go and see - they will all win you over and give you a delightful taste of the Cotswolds!

I’m delighted to support this first Cheltenham edition
of Think Locally and the great local independent
shops, services, pubs and restaurants that it promotes.
We have a choice. Do we want Cheltenham to
look the same as everywhere else, dominated by
lookalike chain stores, populated entirely by national
and international retail brands? Or, do we want a
vibrant local economy full of original, distinctive food
and drink, and products and ideas? The issue isn’t just
sentimental.
A report this year showed the damage being done to our
high streets:
4 41 per cent of the towns surveyed were ‘clone
towns’ where more than half the stores were
chains.
4 Cambridge was found to be the UK’s most cloned
town with only nine varieties of shop on the main
high street.
4 Richmond had the most cloned London high
street surveyed, with only five independent shops
on its entire length.
But what if I tell you that Cheltenham is different and
not just because of its world-class festivals, stunning
regency architecture and beautiful parks? As you
can see in this book, Cheltenham is bursting with
genuinely distinctive local independent businesses,
places to eat and drink and shop and be looked after,
often sourced by local suppliers. That local character
is good for us and good for the environment and it
helps the town to prosper economically too.
But we have to make sure it’s true. So do read this
beautiful book but use it too. Support the local
independents you’ll discover in its pages and we’ll all
benefit.
All the best.

The interesting thing about Cheltenham is that it has been a thriving centre for indies for hundreds of years! It was originally a small Cotswolds market town and trading centre that served the surrounding agricultural areas, but after the discovery of healing mineral waters in the late 18th century it became an increasingly fashionable place to be with people coming from far and wide to drink the water.
King George III arrived in Cheltenham in 1788, setting
the seal of royal patronage, and the rich and famous
then followed. Among the visitors were the Duke of
Wellington, Princess Victoria, Lord Byron and Jane
Austin. Many of the wealthy people that came to take
the waters then decided to build houses in the town
and there was a period of rapid expansion. A variety
of shopping areas developed to cater for the needs
of the new residents and local indies thrived until the
sixties when the nationals started to take over the
town centre and the age of the supermarket arrived.
Although the spas are no longer in existence
Cheltenham has remained a fashionable and exciting
place to live and visit. With a number of famous
schools and a university in the town there is a
thriving music and art scene and the development of
Cheltenham Festivals has further added to it being
seen as a major centre of culture. The town now
hosts several festivals and antique fairs throughout
the year. it is also known as the home of National Hunt Racing, the highlight of which is the famous Cheltenham Gold Cup, which takes place in March every year.
Independent businesses remain an integral part of the Cheltenham experience however, and there are some remarkable examples with some of the shops having stayed in the same family or trade for more than 100 years. There is now a website devoted to the history of the South Cheltenham shops on www.cheltenhamsouthtown.org and an active community project with local schoolchildren recording the memories and stories of older residents so that they learn that not everything comes straight off a supermarket shelf.
Cheltenham is working hard to protect its local communities and traders and by buying this book you are helping to support the call for more personal, meaningful and planet-friendly shopping experiences.

From the very first day Wendy Ellyatt invited me to walk
round Cheltenham with her I knew that this book was going
to be special. I was literally taken back by the sheer number of
indies that were proudly adorning street after beautiful street.
However, the thing I remember most about that day was when
Wendy said to me ‘just wait until you meet the people behind
these businesses... they are even more impressive’. And do you
know something, she was right!
I was absolutely delighted when Cheltenham Festivals they said
wanted to be part of our initiative to support and promote
the indies of Cheltenham because there is no doubt that their
influence and input has been invaluable in helping us reach
our collective goals. Cheltenham Festivals are a rare thing in
business: they are hugely successful, they continue to grow,
to push boundaries and yet they have not lost their sense of
belonging to their local community - in other words, they really
do care.
And so to Wendy, to all our friends at Cheltenham Festivals; to
our photographers Tom Barton, Phil James and White Room
images - for freely giving their time and talent - to Christian
and Sue, and to everyone who has made this book possible -
THANK YOU!
Finally, and most certainly not least, I hope that this book
encourages you to visit and support the indies of Cheltenham
- you won’t be disappointed!
See you next time.

TL. How did you get involved
with Cheltenham Festivals?
DR. First of all in about
1974 when I came on a
school orchestra trip! Then
later when I worked at the
University of Gloucestershire.
I came to work for the
Festivals to set up the Science
Donna Renney in conversation with Think Locally
Festival in 2002 as I had
seen first-hand through my
husband’s business how
important it was for the
public to have direct access to
scientists.
TL. What do you enjoy most
about what you do?
DR. The challenge of making sure that our programmes inspire those with the funding to support us. Sponsorship, donations from individuals and trusts make up 50% of our income
TL. Where do you get your inspiration?
“Donna Renney is the Chief Executive of Cheltenham Festivals which runs the town’s Jazz, Science, Music and Literature Festivals. Since 2006, Donna has been the driving force behind the organisation’s bid to put Cheltenham firmly on the cultural map. As a result, the festivals all now boast impressive international reputations as dynamic and culturally important events. Outside of the festivals, Donna is a firm champion of the importance of the arts, and has worked to support the heritage of her local community in the village of Naunton where she lives with her husband and horses…. “
7
DR. From all the talented
people I work with.
TL. What are challenges of
the job?
DR. Knowing which
opportunities to grab hold of
and develop. There is so much
going on.
TL. What message would you
most like to get over about the
festivals?
DR. They really can open
people’s minds to new
experiences and to thinking
differently. The four festivals
together , all the audiences and
performers make up a very
special creative community.
I want the festivals to be a
bigger player on the national
cultural scene and we are
working on this.
TL. What would you say
makes Cheltenham so special?
DR. Cheltenham is a town
with a split personality. On
one side it is a town steeped
in history, with regency
architecture at every turn;
on the other it offers award-
winning contemporary
restaurants and bars alongside
cutting edge culture. It is this
mix which makes it such a
perfect festival town. We
are very privileged to have a
range of wonderful venues
right at the heart of the town
- including the splendid Pittville
Pump Room, the central hub
of the Town Hall, the outdoor
oasis of Imperial Gardens
and the brilliantly modern
Parabola Arts Centre - each
with their own personality and
atmosphere. The festivals are
committed to bringing really
ground-breaking events to the
town, and Cheltenham as both
a location and community
is incredibly open to these
new and exciting cultural
experiences. It also helps
that it’s such a beautiful town
and just a short journey from
some of the country’s major
cities. It makes it perfect for a
festival weekend away.
TL. Do you have a favourite
local independent business?
Why?
DR. There are far too many
great independent businesses
to pick just one. Our offices
are on the Bath Road, so
we are incredibly lucky to
have a host of independent
traders right on our doorstep.
The Daffodil in the Suffolks
is a favourite for special
lunch meetings, The Natural
Grocery Store is a brilliant
antidote to chain food-
stores and I really appreciate
specialist shops like Dodwells
the stationers. I also enjoy
being pampered at Stuart
Holmes hair and beauty
salon - their recent award
as the salon of the year is an
inspiration to all independent
traders.
TL. What do you think
independents have to offer
over the large corporate
chains?
DR. It is all about the personal
level of service. You can get
to know the owner and their
passions, and they get to know
about you.
TL. What do you enjoy doing
when you are not working?
DR. All the usual things
reading, music, walking and
riding my horse. I’d love to
learn to ride a motorbike as I
love going fast.
TL. Do you have a philosophy
by which you live your life?
DR. It’s a horsey term - kick
on even when terrified.
TL. Any hidden talents?
DR. Probably riding
TL. Anything about yourself
you’d like to change?
DR. I would love to be able to
get to places on time - and not
be in a rush.
TL. Favourite place to go on
holiday?
DR. Meudon Hotel, Mawnan
Smith , Cornwall. It’s very old
fashioned and away from all
technical gadgets which I love
but they do become addictive.
TL. If you weren’t doing this
what would you be doing?
DR. I’d like to think I would
be working for an educational
charity possibly connected to
Africa as I love Africa.
Many thanks Donna and good luck with this year’s festivals.

Re-Imagine Your High Street is a new national town centre programme run by nef (the new
economics foundation) and its purpose is to build on and create new activity on your high street.
The programme focuses on town and city centres, the people that run them, the businesses that
operate there, residents, employees and visitors. Re-Imagine Your High Street is an antidote
to Clone Town Britain, an opportunity for people who have a stake in a particular place to do
something different, to plan and take to action ideas, projects and enterprises that will help grow
the local economy and enhance local well-being.
The Five Ways to Well-being
nef believes that our town and city centres should be more than just places to shop. They can be
places to:
Connect …to people, ideas and landscapes.
Be active …by walking, cycling, playing and gardening.
Take notice …of the seasons, of the unusual, of the new.
Keep learning …something new, rediscover something old
Give …your time, your skills, your knowledge
These are just some of the ways we think towns and city centres can be different and distinctive.
Through the programmes we offer, participants get to plan and take to action their own vision of
what the place where they live and work will be like in the future. A place where high well-being of
residents and visitors is the goal.

Montpellier is one of the most fashionable and best-known areas of Cheltenham.
It is here where the first Cheltenham spring was discovered in 1716 and it was named
by the developer after the French spa town of the same name in order to promote its
reputation as a place for healing and leisure.
It is predominantly composed of small, characterful independent shops, chic cafes and
restaurants and has a highly distinctive and slightly continental architecture that makes it one
of the most beautiful parts of the town. This is particularly so as it lies opposite two of the
ornamental garden areas that made the town so famous.

TL: When did you decide
you wanted to run your own
business?
JW: We’d both been working
as freelance designers, with
Gemma designing menswear
for Boden, and myself as
a senior designer for part
of Nokia. We loved the
challenges of freelancing, but
hated the lack of job security
and the long hours commuting
from our home in The
Cotswolds. We’d both long
been compulsive hoarders,
both of interesting objects,
and the places that sold
them. We’d also had enough
experience of bad service, and
haughty sales assistants to
customers who’ve become
friends too! Plus, we’re
extremely lucky to have such
lovely and passionate staff,
many of whom have been with
us from the start!
TL: Where do you get your
inspiration?
JW: That’s a tricky one! I think,
as designers, you’re constantly
absorbing influences, even
subconsciously. We both
have hugely different but
convergent tastes, and we get
inspired by things as ‘random’
as a vintage French postman’s
satchel (which we using for
inspiration for our own-label
bags), to the cover of a 1950s
book, a small shop in a village
know what not to do! When
both of our contracts came to
and end in 2002, we decided
the time was right to pool our
experience, and open a shop
of our own, selling the sort
of product we felt passionate
about, but most of all with
great customer service!
TL: What do you enjoy most
about what you do?
JW: The chance to make
people happy! Yes, we know
that sounds cheesy, but it’s
true! We love the chance to
talk directly to our customers,
the challenge of finding new
and beautiful products, the
buzz of each new season’s
stock, and the wonderful

we visited on holidays. We’re
constantly suggesting ideas to
each other!
TL: Describe your typical
client?
JW: There isn’t one! When
we started the business, our
target customer was women
aged 27-55, but we frequently
have mother, daughter and
grandmother shopping with
us at the same time! Plus,
because we sell homewares
and furniture we have plenty
of men through the doors as
well !
TL: What would you like
people to know most about
your business?
JW: That we care passionately
about what we do – This is
no ‘hobby’ shop for us, it’s
our life! That we have always
tried to ‘forge our own way’
– We think the moment you
try to be somebody else, you
lose your way. That we think
extremely hard about every
style and every range we
sell. And last (but not least)
we were honoured to win
Womenswear Retailer of The
Year at the 2010
23
Drapers Awards (UK Clothing
industry’s ‘Oscars’ !
TL: What do independents
have to offer over the large
corporate chains?
JW: In two words – SERVICE
and KNOWLEDGE. A
commitment to developing
good customer service
relationships. In our field,
this can sometimes involve
an element of counselling -
Knowing what your customers’
lifestyle is, their individual
needs, what they’re happy
wearing, and even what
their friends are wearing!
This approach requires
commitment, and it develops
over time. Something that
chain stores are not usually
geared up to do.
TL: What do you enjoy doing
when you are not working?
JW: Well, running a business
with your partner means that
you inevitably find yourself
discussing work all the time(!),
but we try to switch off when
we can. In Gemma’s case,
that involves everything from
watercolour painting to a new-
found passion for gardening,
while in my case I have a
50-year old Alfa Romeo, which
keeps me busy tinkering! We
both love walking in the fields
near our home, and eating out.
TL: Any hidden talents?
JW: Well, I judge the World
shin-kicking championships at
the Cotswold Olimpicks(!),
and not so much a hidden
talent, but Gemma designed
the suits that the winning
French World Cup team wore
in 1998!
Many Thanks James

CHELTENHAM DIRECTORIES
Cheltenham Directories was started in 2005 by former journalist and local mum, Clare McVey, when she launched The Leckhampton Directory.
It was the first community magazine of its kind in Cheltenham,
delivered door-to-door, free of charge. Due to its overwhelming
success and popularity with both readers and advertisers, three
more directories followed: The Charlton Kings, The Park & Tivoli
and The Central Cheltenham titles.
Keeping it local is at the core
of what we do: each magazine
is different, with localised
information, news, features,
what’s on listings and groups &
societies for that particular area.
That’s why readers love them
and use them to find services
and tradespeople on their
doorstep – all of which supports
our local independents.

Built around a square of very attractive Regency buildings this area takes its name from the Earls of Suffolk and Berkshire, who owned the much of the land in the 1820s and 1830s
when this part of town was built.
With its profusion of small, independent shops ranging from butchers and bike shops
to antiques and curios, interior designers, up-market boutiques, gift shops and cafes, it is a very
popular place for gentle browsing and great finds.
It’s worth checking the opening times of the shops before you visit as not all are open every day
and most are closed on Sundays. When you are there try not to miss the indies in Great Norwood
Street and Suffolk Street (that lie just beyond the main square).

It was one of our local traders who first showed me a Think Locally book and the journey really began there.
The Think Locally books are one
way that we can fight back against
the nationals and their assumption
that we will always choose price
over relationship and quality of
experience. Think Locally, therefore,
isn’t just about a set of beautiful
books with advertisements, it is
about all of us coming together to
establish a movement of people
and businesses that want something
better and more meaningful.
Cheltenham is a beautiful town
that has a wonderful variety of
local independents. Many of these,
however, are tucked away in small
side streets and areas away from
the centre and you have to explore
a bit to find them. I hope that this
book will encourage you to do so
and that you will go out of your
way to both visit and support them.
Eighteen months ago I started
the local community initiative
Cheltenham Connect with the
aim of exploring how we could
strengthen and empower the South
Cheltenham residential and trading
community. Our area is packed full
of fascinating independent shops
and one of the main challenges was
how we could let more people
know about them and encourage
them to visit our part of the town.
The moment that I saw the Think
Locally book I knew we had found
something special that could help.
It is really hard being a small local
independent these days. The new
NEF (New Economics Foundation)
report that Martin Horwood
mentioned shows that 41 per cent
of UK towns are clone towns and
a further 23 per cent are on the
verge of becoming clone towns.
That means that small businesses
have to increasingly compete with
the multinationals and to find a way
to survive their vast buying and
marketing power.
The only people that can make a
difference to this situation is us! By
choosing to buy local we support
not only our local shops, but also
the character and sustainability
of our communities. It doesn’t
necessarily mean that we should
never visit a supermarket, but it
does mean that we should think
twice before we do so and make
an effort to see whether we can
buy things closer to home.
my think locally journeyby Wendy Ellyatt

up shop close to town or city
centers as opposed to developing
on the fringe. This generally
means contributing less to sprawl,
congestion, habitat loss and
pollution.
Create more good jobs:
Small local businesses are the
largest employer within the direct
community, provide the most jobs
to residents.
Get better service:
Local businesses tend to hire
local people who have a vested
interest in looking after customers
and getting to know them. The
atmosphere is therefore more
welcoming and friendly and people
receive a much more personal
service.
Invest in community:
Local businesses are owned by
people who live in this community,
are less likely to leave, and are more
invested in the community’s future.
Put your taxes to good use:
Local businesses in town centres
require comparatively little
infrastructure investment and make
more efficient use of public services
as compared to nationally owned
stores entering the community.
Buy what you want, not what
someone wants you to buy:
A marketplace of tens of thousands
of small businesses is the best
way to ensure innovation and
low prices over the long-term. A
multitude of small businesses, each
selecting products based not on a
national sales plan but on their own
interests and the needs of their
local customers, guarantees a much
broader range of product choices.
Encourage local prosperity:
A growing body of economic
research shows that in an
increasingly homogenized world,
people are more likely to want to
invest and settle in communities
that preserve their independent
businesses and distinctive character.
Wendy Ellyatt
Buy Local - Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.
Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.
Keep the community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of each place. The local tourism businesses also benefit.
Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set

Established in 1945,
Cheltenham Music Festival
is the national institution
which has ensured the town’s
position on the cultural map
for more than 65 years. Set in
beautiful venues throughout
Cheltenham and the
Cotswolds, the programme
annually brings together the
world’s leading performers,
composers and classical
repertoires to the most
stunning of regency backdrops.
In 2011, Festival Director
Meurig Bowen leads a
programme which celebrates
the old and new; introduces
established artists and
fresh new talent; takes
both international and local
inspiration; and explores the
links between maths and music
in ten days of breathtaking
concerts.
For pure symphonic splendour, the Festival welcomes two of the country’s greatest symphony orchestras. Taking a night off from their Glyndebourne residency, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski perform a programme of Wagner, Brahms and Richard Strauss; whilst the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will rejoice in an all Russian programme under the guidance of conductor Kirill Karabits. A performance by iconic percussionist Evelyn Glennie looks set to be a programme highlight as she introduces the world première of a new percussion concerto by Joseph Phibbs which celebrates cocktails from around the world (a cocktail shaker is sure to feature...).
Alongside established artists, the programme celebrates
some of the classical world’s brightest rising stars this July. Sit back and enjoy a concerto debut from rock-star-pianist James Rhodes, a Dvorák chamber music double-bill featuring cellist Natalie Clein, and a performance from one of classical music’s hottest new properties, guitarist Milos Karadaglic.
With show-stopping concerts in Cheltenham Town Hall, intimate musical adventures in the Pittville Pump Room, and a feast for the senses in cathedrals, abbeys and churches across the county - the Festival showcases the local region at its very best.
The full programme of over 80 unique experiences will be available in April from cheltenhamfestivals.com/music Booking opens Monday 11 April.
Sublime music. World-class performers. Inspiring venues. Over 80 unique musical adventures.

Started by professional advertising photographer Phil James, White Room Images (WRI) adopts a
fresh approach to portrait photography offering ‘magazine’ style portraits for everyone, either taken in
their professional studios or at a location of your choice. Choose from simple black and white or image
graphics to photo art and bespoke image artwork- all at package prices to suit every budget.
We were constantly informed of people having bad experiences at other portrait studios, feeling really
pressured to spend excessive amounts and generally coming away unhappy, from what we believe
should be a fun, positive experience that leaves you with some great images and change in your pocket.
As advertising photographers we realised that people were looking for something ‘cooler’ than what
was on offer from other studios so White Room Images was born to fill that void and we’ve had a great
response so far. There’s no hard sell - just great shots.

What Charlie does
In this busy life we all lead, some people haven’t got the time to
sort out their home-making requirements. Others feel they lack
the creativity to achieve their desires, and yet know what they
would like.
This is where my task begins. I am a creator, designer, stone

I work closely with my clients to make their homes as unique as

that this is where I can really help, bringing out that uniqueness

This part of the town became the core focus for commercial development as the population
continued to grow and remains a very popular shopping destination. The best way to find indie
gems, that are very often hidden away in quieter areas of the town, is to explore!
Parking is available along the Promenade and at a number of fee-paying car parks. Cheltenham
has over 100 shops open on Sundays from 11am. Most of the major stores are open for trading,
and many of the smaller stores open too. It is advisable to check with indies for their
week-end opening hours though.

From modest beginnings,
the Cheltenham Jazz Festival
is now firmly established
as a not to be missed date
on the international music
calendar. It annually brings
together legendary performers
alongside fresh new talent in
six days of inspiring, surprising
and cutting edge jazz over the
May Bank Holiday. As Artistic
Director Tony Dudley-Evans
puts it, “There’s a special
energy and edge you won’t
get anywhere else: it’s fun, it’s
exhausting and it’s the best
jazz festival in the UK”.
The Town Hall is the unrivalled
festival hub, as the music spills
out into Imperial Gardens with
Jazz on the Square - featuring
outdoor music, al fresco food
and family fun throughout the
festival. 2011 the extra bank
holiday for the Royal Wedding
will add even more
swing with a celebration of all
things British in the Square.
The day of royal revelry will be
rounded off with a broadcast
of the wedding itself and a very
special Jazz Royalty edition of
the BBC’s Friday Night is Music
Night, presented by Sir Michael
Parkinson in the Town Hall.
Following sell-out performances
in 2010, superstar performer
Jamie Cullum will return to
Cheltenham as Guest Director.
As well as playing his own
headline set, Jamie will bring
some of his favourite acts to
Cheltenham including Mercury
Prize nominated Kit Downes
and his sextet, soul singer-
songwriter Andreya Triana
and beautiful pop covers from
Susanna.
Alongside Mr Cullum, the
programme is bursting
with iconic performers. The
Overtone Quartet alone
bring together four of the
world’s most admired jazz
musicians: bassist Dave Holland,
saxophonist Chris Potter, pianist
Jason Moran and drummer Eric
Harland make up the all-star
American Quartet. The best in
home-grown and international
jazz is celebrated with Brit Tom
Cawley and his trio Curios,
leading UK saxophonist Andy
Sheppard, soul singer James
Hunter, a celebrated return
from Kyle Eastwood, Martin

third year running.
Stephen continued: “More and
more investors are concerned
about their financial futures and I

Clients can also take out a portfolio
SIPP with no annual management

How a SIPP could save your retirement p lansIs it too late to review my pensions
and investments? How can I ensure
that my investments are in top
performing funds? How I can find
out how to save money on tax?
Where should I invest, and how
can I get help with my investments?
We help our clients take control
of their retirement planning and
wealth and help them find the
answers to these questions. On a
daily basis we help our clients, both
local and national, to take control
of their financial situations and
make their money really work for
them with the appropriate attitude
to risk and tax planning.”
“Many clients want to choose

Most people do not know that
SIPPs can buy commercial property,
any fund in the marketplace, any

opinion that a MYSIPP SIPP could
be the only pension vehicle that
you need and we are very pleased
to have opened 860 plans for both
local and national clients. We look
forward to helping many more new

Grey leather shorts, Gold Cup and a sex change. All just a day in the life of Cheltenham’s latest high-rolling IFAs, introduced here by John Bees.
Bees & Co
TL: If you had to come up with
just a few descriptive words
to describe Bees & Co, what
would they be?
B&C: Truly independent; skilled;
good-humoured; different.
Lots of people use those kinds
of words to describe their
approach but they’re key to
everything we do. In fact, City
Wealth magazine described us
as ‘a trusted service where you
feel you are in an inner circle of
friends’ and praised our advice
as coming ‘with a smile if the
situation allows’. I think that kind
of sums us up.
TL: What are your key values
as a firm?
B&C: Yet again, the kind of
thing other people like to
boast – only for us it represents
everything important to
us in our profession. Trust.
Independence. And our
contract is with the client, not
the institution. The bottom line
is that our advice won’t be
taken unless and until the client
trusts us. Some even become
friends, and the majority
are recommended to us by
someone else.
TL: Can potential clients
come to you whatever their
circumstances, or do you only
work with millionaires?
B&C: It’s true many of our
clients are in the £5m+ bracket.
But we’re happy to talk to
anyone about their financial
planning, whatever their
John Bees, PartnerBodger Lathe expert
107
circumstances. If we’re not best
placed to help them, we’re sure
to know a man (or woman)
who can.
TL: How long has the team
worked together?
B&C: Altogether we boast
eighty years in the industry
between us, which is a bit
terrifying! We don’t feel a day
over seventy-nine. Then we’ve
worked together as part of a
larger organisation for over five
years, and Clare and I set up
Bees & Co in May 2010.
TL: So do you see yourselves as
new kids on the block?
B&C: We prefer to think of
ourselves as the big kids,
rebranded!
TL: Is there room for all the
different IFA firms out there,
from sole traders in converted
garages to the multiples in huge
offices?
B&C: Yes – we all operate
within different markets. As long
as there’s money in the world
and taxes to take it away again,
there will be work for good
IFAs.
TL: Do you tend to build long
relationships with clients?
B&C: My own record is 32
years, a client who is still with
me today. Even our baby-faced
Steve has kept his longest for
the last 13. Our clients know
we’ll still be here next year –
we’re no fly-by-nights.
TL: What’s the advantage in
coming to a firm of your size?
B&C: We boast a huge wealth
of back-up, from one-another
within the team and then the
wider professions such as top
legal brains and tax specialists
– who in turn recommend us
to their own clients. But at this
size, our work has a personal
touch and our overheads are
controlled.
TL: What issues do you see most often? B&C: Wealth preservation, taxation issues, erosion of assets, failing pension funds, Inheritance Tax, low interest rates, self-protection in a flat economy – you name it, they’re all issues in the current climate.
TL: So is it all confusing acronyms? B&C: We’re passionate about plain English and making sure the client understands everything we’re saying and understands the implications of what we’re proposing; beyond that he or she doesn’t need to
Central
108
be bogged down in industry
jargon, but needs to trust us
and our advice.
TL: Will the new FSA
regulations affecting IFAs make
any difference to Bees & Co?
B&C: No. We’re already ahead
of the game.
TL: This guide is all about
thinking locally – so where can
clients find you?
B&C: We have lovely bright
offices in leafy Montpellier close
to the Ladies’ College. But we’re
just as happy meeting wherever
the client is based. And our
clients are truly international
–much of our work is with
people looking to leave or
return to the UK, who want to
maximise their assets and tax
efficiency.
TL: Do the team have
interesting lives outside work?
B&C: Oh no, we’re really dull.
Golf. Families. Reading. Oh yes,
I’m a member of the Guild of
Bodger Lathe Turners and go
international salmon fishing.
Steve enjoys marathon running
and long days at the races.
Clare is big into Burlesque and
is looking to take part in the
Rickshaw Run. I’m a Freeman
of the City of London and a
Liveryman. We all do a bit of
charity fundraising – it allows us
to indulge in a bit of fancy dress.
Not to mention rubber waders
and grey leather shorts. Very
dull, really.
TL: Have you ever been
stumped by a client’s particular
issue?
B&C: The main one that comes
to mind was a male client who
wanted Life Assurance, but
half way through underwriting
underwent a sex change.
Ironically, when I re-quoted
the policy, it cost the client less
as a woman than I’d originally
quoted for a man!
TL: Finally, in case your perfect
client is reading this article, how
Steve Jones, Financial PlannerMarathon Runner
109
will they recognise themselves?
B&C: One perfect client
for us would be someone
considering selling a business
in the near future, or a wealthy
new divorcee who could do
with advice about buying her
ex-husband’s company! Our
services don’t stop at dealing
with the money aspect – we’re
able to coach clients who have
suddenly found themselves
with too much time on their hands after retiring or selling a business, or those who have huge amounts of wealth for the first time in their lives.
We’d also like to talk to anyone who has IHT issues, the recently-bereaved who are looking for guidance on financial planning, those looking round our lovely Cotswolds and thinking of investing in property
or moving back to the UK
to spend more time here, or
families who are sadly facing
disputes among themselves and
are worried about safeguarding
their assets.
Oh, and of course we’d love
to talk to lottery winners,
premiership footballers and
anyone who has just won a
fortune on the Gold Cup!

The Bath Road, originally created as a turnpike road between 1813 and 1819, is the central hub for the South of Cheltenham.
With a wide variety of shops, pubs and restaurants, it has a thriving community feel that attracts a
large number of visitors from the larger town. It is currently part of a DIY Streets Project
that sees local communities having more say in the development and design of their local areas. For
those coming by car there is a pay and display car park available just off the main road.
There are five pubs and both The Exmouth Arms and Norwood Arms
have good sized outside gardens.

Thinking ‘local’ and thinking ‘small’ has been part of environmentalists’ world view ever since the publication of Fritz Schumacher’s book ‘Small is Beautiful’ back in 1973. The debate about ‘appropriate scale’ was noisy and controversial back in the 1970s, but ever since the seductive appeal of the global economy started frazzling our brains, it slipped further and further down the agenda throughout the 80s and 90s.
But ‘local’ has been fighting back over the last decade! There’s been
a flowering of local groups, from the ebullient Transition Towns
movement to one-off originals like Incredible Edible Todmorden
promoting good local food schemes in West Yorkshire. Local
farmers markets have grown up from being somewhat rinky-dinky
niche initiatives into a major social movement, involving more and
more growers, entrepreneurs and consumers every year.
None of this comes easily. This is a world peopled by heroic
entrepreneurs and dedicated volunteers, by regular citizens who
simply want to see their vision of a better world translated into
practical action on the ground. On their ground.
And that’s the context into which this excellent initiative is launching
its Cheltenham edition of ‘Think Locally’. Local businesses and
shopkeepers in Cheltenham have a great story to tell – as Martin
Horwood has described in the introduction. And it really matters that this particular slice of the overall retail scene, unique to Cheltenham, remains as vibrant and profitable as possible.
This is very much a two-way street. As Cheltenham residents, we need to value our independent businesses and shopkeepers properly, and never take for granted the tangible and intangible benefits we derive from their presence in our communities.
But by the same token, we need them to be active in their own local communities, supporting each other, supporting community and voluntary groups – helping to build our Town’s overall resilience and stocks of social capital.
And we also need them to get really good at the big environmental challenges – on energy, water, waste, climate change and so on. Whatever their line of business, Cheltenham’s independent local traders need to set their sights on becoming tomorrow’s most sustainable businesses.
Thinking Local and Thinking Small

TL. How long has Morans
been running and how did it
start?
LM. My parents owned a hotel
in West Byfleet along with
two coffee bars and I went
to work with them after I did
a three year chef ’s course at
Westminster College. I would
have liked to have gone to art
college, but my dad said that
it wasn’t secure enough and
that I would ‘always have a
job in catering’. I realise now
that cooking is really creative
though. I have two brothers
and one also became a chef, whereas the other worked as front of house. I met my first husband when he came to work as a waiter in one of the coffee shops and we then opened a restaurant in Gloucester together. We called it Morans because that was his surname. We based the idea on another restaurant that we knew was doing really well and I knew that I could match the food!
It was a real struggle at the beginning though because
we spent all our advertising
budget on one thing that
didn’t work. We were really
desperate but we then took
out a whole page in the Citizen
and we were busy from then
on. The restaurant became so
successful that we bought the
property next door and then
bought the freehold of the
Bath Road site. Unfortunately
the marriage ended and as part
of the settlement I became
the owner of the Cheltenham
Morans. It was a tough time as
I was then the mother of two

small boys. Fortunately when
I needed a builder someone
recommended my current
husband Brian and we have
been together ever since.
TL. What do you remember
about the early days?
LM. We had very little money
to decorate the restaurant
and at that time overmantels
were really cheap to buy so
we covered all the walls with
them! That started to give
Morans the kind of look that
it has today. We became
increasingly busy and when
the dry cleaners next door
closed down we bought it
and it became the wine bar.
We hadn’t originally intended
to sell tea and cakes but
there was a popular coffee
shop over the road that
closed down and I knew that
there was a customer-base
that would be looking for
somewhere new. That was
when I started baking. We had
leopard-skin print seating in
the wine bar then though and I
remember wondering what all
the elderly ladies coming in
for tea and cakes would make
of it!
TL. Has it always been a family
concern?
LM. I am a sole trader and run
the kitchen but the family have
always been involved. My son
Beano is now the co-manager
with Gareth who was one
of his friends from school. It
is more than just a business
to us. Some of our staff have
been with us for more than
25 years, including the person
who used to be our son’s
nanny! It was more fun in the
early days though as we were
one big family and used to
have lots of parties. Nowadays
there is so much legislation and
I have to spend much more
time in the office.
TL. Do you ever get tired of
being in the kitchen?
LM. I never get fed up of it.
I love it. I normally get up at
5 in the morning and never
oversleep, I never need an
alarm clock. I have always
collected menus and am
always looking for new ideas. If
a new restaurant opens in
Cheltenham I have to check it
out and I find myself thinking ‘I
could do that’ ! . My perfect day
is shopping, cooking and the
having friends around
for a meal. It is only in the
last couple of years that we
have had a box of recipes in
Moran’s kitchen as before that
`I had everything in my head.
We have 120 covers in the
restaurant and about 80 in
the wine bar and on a good
Saturday we can take 160
restaurant bookings.
TL. Do you have any
interesting moments to share?
LM. When I was a student
chef I was invited to work at
Windsor Castle. I was then
offered a job in the kitchens
at Buckingham Palace, but the
pay was very low and it would
have meant constantly moving
around with the royal family so
I turned it down.
Many thanks Lyn.

Think Locally in conversation with:
Paul Keene
(Primrose Vale Farmshop and PYO)
141
TL: How did Primrose Vale
start?
PK: I met Charlotte while we
were both at university and
in 1999 we took over the
tenancy from the landlord
who had already spent twenty
years building up a successful
Pick Your Own business. We
applied for planning permission
to build a small farm shop so
that we could sell our own
produce along with items from
other local suppliers. On the
18th May 2007 we opened
Primrose Vale Farm Shop and
PYO. “Pick Your Own” is very
much an integral part of the
business. It’s crucial to our
success and we’re constantly
trying to think of ways to
improve it for our customers.
TL: What was the biggest chal-
lenge about setting up the
business?
PK: We had to fight to get
planning permission to build the
shop and we then had the joy
of all the floods in our open-
ing year! July should have been
the busiest month for Pick Your
Own, but the people that did
come were only interested in
things that didn’t need washing.
And, of course, we then had to
learn how to manage perma-
nent rather than seasonal staff.
TL: What’s the best thing about
running your own business?
PK: That everything is my
choice and my decisions. I really
like being in control of my own
life where I can lead the way.
TL: Why do businesses like
Primrose Vale matter?
PK: Local produce has never
been more of an issue with the
rising cost of fuel, the impact
on the environment etc. We
really should be addressing as
a nation the fact that we need
to be increasingly self-sufficient.
It’s about connecting customers
to food and where it comes
from and children being able to
touch things that are growing
and to engage with the process
rather than thinking that milk
only comes in cartons and
strawberries in plastic punnets.
TL: Why should people shop
with you rather than visit
supermarkets?
PK: It’s all about scale,
traceability and freshness. We
know exactly where all our
products have come from
(often even down to which
patch!) and there’s something
wonderful about being that
close to suppliers and the land.
Large supermarkets completely
lack the personal touch, ignore
the importance of the seasons
and have a hugely negative
environmental impact.
TL: Where do you get your
ideas/ inspiration?
PK: We are part of a network
of other farmshops and a
member of the Gloucestershire
Farmshops Group. Everyone is
very open and proud of what
they do and, rather than being
competitive, we are all happy to
help and support others.
TL: What do you enjoy doing
do when you are not working?
PK: We have two young
children so they keep me busy,
but I also like mountain-biking
at the week-ends
TL: If you weren’t doing this
what would you be doing?
PK: I was born to be a grower
and just love being close to the
land. I guess I would end up on
a farm – not livestock though,
I would always want to work
with plants.

built in 2007 the farm now grows seasonal fruit

or brassicas full of goodness, there’s plenty
grown at Primrose Vale to suit everyone’s taste.
A full range of local produce including bread,

Charlton Kings lies along the main London Road to the south east of Cheltenham. Although since April 1974 part of Cheltenham Borough Council, it has retained its
separate identity and atmosphere.
With the population of over 10,000, it is now one of the largest suburbs of Cheltenham.
At the heart of the village is a medieval church, dedicated to St Mary in 1190 by William Bishop
of Hereford. A number of attractive houses and pubs are situated in its vicinity.
Six Ways is where Greenway Lane, Ryeworth Road, Copt Elm Road and Cudnall Street meet
with the London Road and where a rich variety of local indies can be found.

For ten days every October, the written word is brought to life in a feast of debates, interviews, readings and performances at The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival. The inaugural festival in 1949 hosted just 9 events. From those modest beginnings the festival now has nearly 500 events and has grown into something of a cultural colossus - rightly earning its reputation as one of the largest and most exciting literary events in the world. In 2010 the festival broke all records as it attracted over 120,000 literary lovers to enjoy around 600 of the world’s foremost writers, politicians, poets, actors, historians and famous faces.
If you have never been to a literature festival before, you may be surprised by the variety and fun to be found in the
Cheltenham programme. There
will be a host of free outdoor
entertainment in the tented
festival village, more international
stars than you shake a very
literary stick at and the
opportunity to put your burning
questions to a host of award-
winning authors, political pundits
and very witty writers. Demand
for tickets is always high, so it’s a
great idea to plan your perfect
festival early.
In 2010 alone Michael Caine,
Dawn French, Stephen Fry,
Philip Pullman, Germaine Greer,
A.S.Byatt and Sebastian Faulks
were just some of the varied
guests to come under the
festival spotlight. The line-up
for the 2011 season will be
unveiled in the early summer –
but you can expect the biggest
programme yet as the tented
festival village spreads out from
Imperial Square to include
Montpellier Gardens. This
means more literary treats
to choose from than ever
before…
Book It!, the festival for younger
readers, runs alongside the main
programme and celebrates
brilliant children’s literature.
From toddlers to teenagers,
all ages are catered for in this
feast of real literary fun. Look
out for favourite childhood
characters let loose around
the gardens, family-friendly
workshops, inspiring storytelling
and adventures into the latest
teenage craze.

My teaching career started in Tower Hamlets, East London, teaching English in an 11-16 mixed comprehensive school. Over the past fifteen years, I have taught all ages from Reception pupils to A Level students in a variety of school settings. My four years’ experience teaching Infants to read and write has enabled me to help pupils of all ages “fill in the gaps” when they are experiencing literacy difficulties. I taught English in a language school in Vienna for two years and after arriving in Gloucestershire in 2000, I began tutoring English, Maths and Science with Gloucestershire Reintegration Service. I spent four years working with Key Stage 3/4 pupils in Worcestershire pupil referral units teaching English and Drama and tutoring individuals with the Behaviour Support Team.
At present, in addition to my private students, I work part-time tutoring secondary pupils in English at Pittville School in Cheltenham focussing in particular, on improving G.C.S.E. English attainment.
I love all aspects of tutoring; I consider myself extremely privileged to work with such motivated children and young adults and I always give honest feedback to parents. It is extremely satisfying watching children’s progress unfold, week by week. It is even lovelier to see their confidence in their own learning skills mature. Plenty of hot chocolate and smiles play a significant part in the Sarah Hall Tuition approach.
Boys and girls have different learning styles and I try to find the optimum approach for each individual child. I have an eleven year old daughter and a ten year old son and can identify with the concerns of all parents regarding their children’s education and hopefully, help provide reassurance and tangible academic improvement.
My current pupils are aged between six and sixteen. My hourly rate is £35 per hour for individual tuition and £25 for paired/ small group tuition.
Is your child having difficulties with their school work? Are you uncertain of your child’s attainment in relation to other children of the same age?Does your child need some extra help in gaining confidence as a learner? Are you thinking of entering your child for Grammar School entrance tests but unsure if they are suitable?

TestimonialsMy daughter attended a number of Grammar School coaching sessions with Sarah prior to sitting the Grammar School entrance tests in November 2008. I can without hesitation recommend her coaching sessions for children wishing to understand the types of questions/papers you may get, the best methods to use as well as lots of practice. The coaching also gave my daughter greater confidence in her ability, which also reflected in her school work. Following the coaching from Sarah, my daughter successfully achieved enough points in the tests to enable her to opt for a Grammar School place on the school preference form. As I was so impressed with Sarah’s coaching, my son is now having coaching sessions with Sarah to help him achieve success in his Y6 SATS.
Parent of pupil at Mitton Manor Primary School, Tewkesbury.
We were so pleased to have found Sarah – someone with a special ability to work with our Son, to stimulate learning and give him more confidence in his abilities. There has been a significant change in his attitude to school work and last week he received an award for ‘ giving 100% effort in all subjects’ – we couldn’t have asked for more. Ben always enjoys his sessions with Sarah, she manages to make learning more interesting.
Parent of pupil at Gotherington Primary School, Cheltenham.
My son has been tutored by Sarah Elizabeth since the beginning of summer on a weekly basis to provide supplemental support in his Literacy and later his Math’s learning. The goal was to focus on readying him to be able to more easily manage the changing school curriculum (leap from Y3 to Y4 and beyond) and forthcoming exams. The outcome so far has been more than expected. Sarah has not only begun to build bridges across gaps in knowledge… through her encouraging and positive style of teaching she has also enabled a stronger ‘belief ’ in my child’s view of himself as a very capable and bright individual. He knows he can be trusted to get on with his work while still having ‘fun’ in the process. To my mind, this ‘nurture’ aspect is the difference that has made a difference to his overall learning curve. I would highly recommend Sarah to anyone considering her services.

Established in 1824 by Mr. James Cox alongside
the Clopton Bridge on the River Avon in
Stratford, Cox’s Yard was originally a timber

Well known throughout the Cotswolds,
Cox’s has an ever-changing eclectic stock

once upon a...Ok, we’re not a company full of goody-two-
shoes (far from it) but like lots of other people
we were getting fed up with the proliferation
of retail giants popping up in our local
communities and the number of independents
closing down. It was getting to the point where
every High Street was turning into a clone of
another and we wanted to do something that
might make a difference; something that stood
up for our indies...
support your indies...We’re not saying all indies are perfect - they’re
not - and for us that’s part of their appeal; it’s
the reason why we urge people to support
and use them because being unique should be
celebrated.
this is our independents day...We created our books as a celebration of local
indies - we want to show them off so people
get to see what they can really offer.
We always use talented local photographers
and our designers work really hard to make
sure each page is distinctive.
We are trying to unite our independent
business communities, bring them together
under one roof; encourage them to actively
support each other - to take a stand against
corporate giants.
champion of independentsGetting people to use independent businesses
more regularly is not an easy task, because
we all live such busy lives, and the message
of convenience can be compelling. But we
have to ask ourselves - what is the real cost
of convenience? If we lose our independent
businesses, we lose a big part of who we are
as a nation. The landscape of the places we live
and love will be lost forever and we don’t want
that to happen.
So we want to encourage people to champion
the cause of their own indies - to spread the
word about how good they are, to talk about
their experiences, as this will definitely help to
get more people through local doors.
Think locally...
183
missionWe want to make it easier for people to find
great local indies. We want to inspire people
who don’t use them, to start, so we will keep
spreading the word and continue to produce
think locally books in as many areas as we can.
We get so many messages of support from
people who have seen our books, which tells
us we’re doing something right – this definitely
keeps us going on those long evenings stuck in
the office!
our indie manifestoWe are starting an Indie Revolution and want
everyone to get involved so we created a very
simple 5 point manifesto...
1 Support your local independents. Think
before you go into a big chain and ask
yourself is there an indie alternative nearby?
2 Seek out and try to visit a new indie at least
once a week.
3 Tell your independent business owners
when they are doing a good job... and when
they are not!
4 Go to markets, farm shops and
cooperatives.
5 Tell your friends about your favourite indies
and get them to visit!

As part of our mission to help and support our local indies we are delighted to tell you that we now offer additional design services.
We know that our customers appreciate the
effort we go to in creating beautiful designs
for their pages so it seemed like an obvious
step to offer help with their other design
needs.

The Opportunity
Paul Madison
Think Locally is passionate about supporting independent businesses. We don’t want the places we live in
to become future clone towns. So in 2007 we started our Indie Revolution (here in Oxford) by publishing a
beautiful (and very cool) coffee-table book which showcases ‘indies’ in a unique light. We were overwhelmed by
peoples’ reactions to our indies only books, and that made us realise that we onto something very exciting. We
are now growing across the UK and are looking for dynamic and inspirational people to help take our message
to the masses.
This is a sales role, but it requires no hard selling; we want our representatives to become ambassadors for
our message, using their time intelligently to build relationships with local independents, whilst exploring all the
opportunities to embed Think Locally into the community. Of course there is selling involved and we will need
you to be dedicated, organised and driven to hit your targets... but luckily we have a product that does most of
the selling for you.
Three years on we are very proud of our achievements and the fact that our books have been universally
praised for their depth and for bringing out the personalities behind the local businesses. Your job will be to
approach the indies in your area, introduce the Think Locally message, and sell them space in the book. For this
we will pay you a basic wage with commission and bonus incentives.
This is the chance to be at the start of something meaningful and exciting - an Indie Revolution - so we would
like to find people who can add something to our brand; who would like to share in our successes as we grow.
Soon we will be looking more closely at applications and holding interviews with potential candidates.
In the meantime if you want to add anything about yourself that you did not include in y
our CV or accompanying email then please feel free to do so.
We will be touch....
Join the Indie Revolution...
Do you agree with us and think that we all need to do more to support our local indies? If your
answer is yes, then you are already part of our indie revolution.
