Tony has been very supportive of the Chelmsford Business Association for a number of years and serves on the board of directors. Tony represents the Business Association on the Town of Chelmsford economic development committee. Tony has donated many hours of time, services and materials at little or no cost to the Little League fields on Chelmsford Street. Tony has been very supportive for many years helping the holiday decorating committee. Tony has been very helpful to the Chelmsford parade committee. Tony is the owner of Village Electric Company which was established in 1978 and since then he has served thousands of customers in the Chelmsford area and beyond. His company specializes in commercial, industrial, residential, swimming pool and communication services. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Electrical Contractors Association. Any member of the association is eligible for the award. To be considered, a member must first be nominated. This can be done at any time by any member of the association. Once nominated a list of the candidate’s contributions are compiled and forwarded to the nominating committee. The nominating committee then weighs each candidate’s specific contributions to the town, the community and the association. These accomplishments are then rated by the value of the contribution. All of our nominated members were excellent choices for the award. We think it says a lot about the quality of our membership, that we had such a difficult time choosing just one award winner. We would like to thank all the nominated members, even though we do not publicly disclose their names, your efforts and contributions are not unnoticed and are appreciated. Rick Romano, Dennis E. Winter 2012

President’s Message

Happy New Year everyone! I’m hoping everyone enjoyed their holidays and family traditions as much as I did. Aside from the cold, dark hiccup last October it looks like we’re having a mild start to winter. That was good news to retailers like me who worry about holiday storms disrupting valuable holiday business.

I would like to thank everyone who shopped locally this year; it makes a difference in so many ways. With the internet and big box retailers tempting all with the promise of “too good to be true” deals and crowded parking lots, your local merchants offered personal service and products that continue to set them apart.

The 2011 CBA annual holiday social was held at the Radisson Hotel and Suites in Chelmsford on December 1st. This event continues to be a great time, if you missed it make a point to come next year! Good food and drinks, raffl es, dancing, and a chance to catch up with your fellow CBA members make it one of the best events of the year.

Congratulations to Tony Del Papa from Village Electric. Tony was named the CBA’s new member of the year! He has and continues to be a great CBA member and contributor to so much of what we do in town.

At our annual meeting last November we had some changes on the board. After three great years Lynn Marcella fi nished up as President, special thanks to her for all of her efforts to the CBA. The Chelmsford Housing Authority

bestowed quite a deserving honor by naming their new building in North Chelmsford after her. The Lynn M. Marcella Residences at 4 James Street was dedicated on November 8th in recognition of her dedication to the Housing Authority and town. I am pleased that Lynn will continue to serve as one of our board members. Thanks to outgoing board members Steve Incropera and Janet Granada for their service on the board. Steve has done a great job for many years overseeing our fi nances as our treasurer. Those vacant seats have been fi lled by new board members Carla Pond from Edward Jones Investments and Paul Hardy from Blake Funeral Home. Changes in the executive board include our new Vice President Kathy Kelley from the Best Western Chelmsford Inn and Jim Cullen, CPA as our new treasurer.

I am looking forward to serving as President of the CBA for the next couple of years. I am surrounded by an experienced and dedicated board who all work together to look after the interests of the CBA. It is an impressive group of business owners, accountants, attorneys, retailers and much more. We continue to look for ways to add value to the association and help our community. I am also happy to report that the Town Selectmen recently voted to continue the single tax rate. This important issue alone saves our membership immeasurably and helps to draw more businesses to Chelmsford.

This year we will be awarding another scholarship, sponsoring more shred days, golf outings, and an annual ski day amongst other events. If you have any suggestions for us please contact any board member. We welcome you to join us at our Board meetings which are held the second Thursday of each month at noon. Just give us a call to let us know you are joining us so we can order lunch for you. Happy New Year to you, your family and your business!

Working with Our Town…

Business Couponing! We have started a coupon networking within the Chelmsford Business Association and have the following program to offer to our members.

If you would be interested in offering a coupon to fellow members that they could use or pass on to employees or friends this might be a great opportunity for you!

Jazzercise was very generous in December 2011, and Castle Complements has an offer for our members for January 2012, check your mailboxes.

If you are interested in more information on this opportunity please give the CBA offi ce a call at 978-250-3858 or e-mail us at: [email protected].

10 Ways to Resolve Confl icts1. Listen More. Talk less.

Learn the other person’s viewpoint.2. Ask when you want something.

Making demands only makes things worse.3. Focus on the problem, not the person.

It’s the only way to solve a disagreement.4. Always deal with the problem at hand.

Never bring up old issues or resentments.5. Take responsibility for your part in the confl ict.

Your view might not be completely right either.6. Express your feelings without casting blame.

Blame never solves anything.7. Always talk things out.

Never use physical force to express your anger.8. Choose your words carefully.

Once a word is spoken it cannot be taken back.9. Look for a solution that is agreeable to all parties.

If someone isn’t satisfi ed, the problem isn’t solved.10. Step back and put the problem in perspective.

Remember... a problem you have today may not seem so bad tomorrow.
