INTRODUCTION

The Caddo Lake Initiative (Anonymous 1993)and the Caddo Lake Scholars project wasestablished in 1993 to promote awareness of theenvironmental importance of the Caddo Lakeecosystem to the inhabitants and visitors to thisinteresting area. In 1994 the Caddo Lake areawas designated a RAMSAR site -- one of themajor wetland ecosystems in the world. Acomprehensive public event (Grandfriends Day)further educated the local citizenery in theenvirons of the lake about the value of theecosystem as an important component of thehealth of our environment. Dahmer (1989) givesa brief history of the region around Caddo Lake.

The drainage system of the Caddo Lakewatershed, approximately 7,000 square miles(Anonymous 1993), encompasses Caddo Parish ofnorthwestern Louisiana and eleven counties inTexas, including all of Camp and Marion countiesand parts of the following counties: Cass,Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Hopkins, Morris,Titus, Upshur, and Wood (Fig. 1). The recentlynamed Ramsar Wetlands Area, is a uniqueecosystem that includes Cypress swamps, marshes, grasslands, bottomland hardwoodforests, and pine forests in a relativelyundisturbed condition. The Caddo Lake and Lake0' The Pines dams, as flood control and waterlevel stabilization structures, are the majorencroachments on the original natural ecosystem.Residences, subsistence farming, and lightcommerce have added to the ecological impactduring the last 100 years.

The watershed for the Lake 0' The Pines iscompletely contained within the drainage systemof Caddo Lake; therefore any reference to thewatershed for Caddo Lake also refers to thewatershed for Lake 0' The Pines. The CaddoLake watershed is the area of Caddo Lake from168 to 500 feet in elevation (msl). The

elevation above mean sea level is from 168 feetat the spillway of Caddo Lake to 500 feet nearPickton, Texas. Annual rainfall is approximately43-50 inches (Stephens and Holmes 1989).

The drainage system is within the Austro-riparian Biotic Province (Dice 1943). Accordingto Blair (1950) most of the Caddo Lakewatershed lies within the Austroriparian BioticProvince, which is bounded approximately by aline from western Harris County through westernRed River County. This is approximately thesame as the Piney Woods (Stephens and Holmes1989). The western edge of the watershed iswithin the Texan Biotic Province. This region isin the Post Oak Belt of Stephens and Holmes(1989). The eastern two-thirds of the watershedis in the Pineywoods vegetational area of Gould(1969) and the remainder to the west is in thePost Oak Savannah. Habitats include Cypressswamps in the wetlands to oak-hickory to pineforests in the uplands. Much of the land iscultivated in row and broadcast crops and pinefarms. Oil production occurs throughout most ofthe watershed.

The great biological surveys of the 1800'sconcentrated on areas in the American southwestor in areas to the east of the Mississippi River. There have been very few biological studies donein eastern Texas and northwestern Louisiana, even though early studies recognized thedistinctive eastern deciduous forest as differentfrom the grasslands and deserts to the west. Theecotone between the eastern deciduous forest andthe western grasslands includes the Caddo Lakewatershed and it is thus of great importance tocomplete studies of biodiversity and ecology inorder to more clearly define this major transitionzone. This important transition zone has hadvery little study, primarily due to its remotelocation from large population centers and the

relative inaccessibility from educational andresearch institutions. This project is one ofseveral which were initiated to further theknowledge and understanding of the biota of theCaddo Lake region .

The objectives of this project were threefold: 1)to compile a bibliography of the scientificliterature that documents museum specimens, specific localities, or other pertinent informationrelated to the amphibian and reptile fauna of theCaddo Lake watershed; 2) to inventory theexisting voucher specimens of amphibians andreptiles in scientific museum collections; 3) fromthe preceding information, to compile a checklistof the species of amphibians and reptiles known toexist in the Caddo Lake watershed.

The earliest explorers in the watershed of theCaddo Lake were probably the survivors of the LaSalle expedition. La Salle had been killed at aplace southwest of the watershed on 19 March1687. After that date the remainder of the partycontinued to the vicinity of the Caddo Indians andRed River. Their march took them through thecenter of the watershed in the spring of 1687. Nobiological specimens are known from thatexpedition. In the years around 1800-1803 theremight have been surveys or explorations in thewatershed related to the Louisiana Purchase. Thesouthern boundary of the watershed from HopkinsCounty, Texas to Latex in Caddo Parish,Louisiana, as defined by us is the same as part ofthe boundary of the watershed for the LouisianaPurchase. The actual area, measured by me usingthe cut and weight method (Lind 1974) is 2,349.5sq. mi.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The scientific literature was searched for allpapers that specifically referred to specimens fromlocalities known to be within the boundaries of thewatershed. No specimens from the watershedwere located on the Internet. If only counties, and not specific localities, are cited, only recordsdocumented from Marion and Camp Counties areincluded herein. Only Camp and MarionCounties are completely included in the watershed. All known museum collections in Louisiana were

examined for specimens. Also, the majorcollections in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahomawere studied. Several large, comprehensivecollections and many smaller collections,.including known private collections, in easternTexas, southern Arkansas, and southeasternOklahoma were also examined. A total of 66collections were studied (Table 1).

RESULTS

Burt (1936) is the first scientific report on anyof the amphibians or reptiles of the Caddo Lakewatershed. The first collection was by A. R.Cahn on 27 March 1920. A few collections hadbeen assembled up to 16 April 1993.

Blair (1950) reported two species of snakes(Carphophis vermis, Regina rigida), sevenspecies of salamanders (Necturus beyeri,Amphiuma tridactylum, Ambystoma maculatum,A. talpoideum, A. opacum, Desmognathusfuscus, Eurycea quadridigitatus), and twospecies of frogs (Pseudacris crucifer, Ranapalustris) that reached their western distribu-tionallimits in the Austroriparian Province.

This paper and Ingold (1995) are the firstchecklists based on comprehensive studies ofmuseum specimens and the scientific literature ofthe entire Caddo Lake watershed.

The herpetofauna of the Caddo Lake watershedthat can be confirmed by voucher specimens inscientific museum collections or by specificcitations in the scientific literature consists of 85species, including 27 species of amphibians and58 species of reptiles. An additional sevenspecies are probably present, but are rare andwere not documented in this study.

For each species, specimens are listed by parishor county with the specific locality followed bythe date of collection and the museum number (inparentheses). Specimens identified by "nv"following the museum number were not examinedand verified. Literature records are listed onlywhen the locality is known to be from within thewatershed. Some of the place names cited areincluded in Figure 2. Place names used inlocalities are used in their original spelling.Directions have been abbreviated (i.e. N=north).

DISCUSSION

The objective of this project was to summarizethe known herpetofauna of the Caddo Lakedrainage system based on surveys of the literatureand museum collections. While neither surveysare complete they are thorough enough to presenta reasonably accurate list of the herpetofauna and,of more importance, they assist in identifying rarespecies or those that have changed in localabundance or in geographic distribution during thepast century.

A total of 1748 specimens have been located inthe following 20 collections, ranked by decreasingholdings.

SM 364UTA 279TU 261TCWC 238TNHC 206FWMSH 155AMNH 51NLU 49DMNH 37LSUMZ 32UMMZ 18LSUS 14UM 10KU 9LTU 8NWSU 7SFA 4FMNH 4OU 1USNM 1

Eighty five species have been confirmed,

including 27 (32 %) species of amphibians and 58(68%) species of reptiles. Frogs comprise 56% ofthe amphibian fauna and 18 % of the totalherpetofauna. Snakes make up the largest reptilegroup with 32 (60%) species, followed by 14(24%) species of turtles, 11 (19%) species oflizards, and the alligator. Snakes comprise 38 %of the total herpetofauna.

The following four species have knowngeographic distributions that definitely include allor part of the watershed and thus are probablypresent; however, no specimens nor literaturecitations have been found that cite specificlocations within the watershed:

Rana areolataApalone muticaPhrynosoma comutumVirginia valerea

Another four species have publisheddistributions that closely approximate thewatershed. Eventually, the following species willprobably be documented in the watershed unlesstheir geographic distributions are presentlyshrinking, unknown to biologists:

Pseudacris clarkiGastrophryne olivaceaBufo vallicepsElaphe guttata

Including these eight species as likely membersof the herpetofauna, the total number of species ineach group is: 12 salamanders, 19 frogs (31amphibians), 15 turtles, 12 lizards, 34 snakes and1 crocodilian (62 reptiles) for a total of 93.

SPECIES NOT VERIFIED

The following species are expected in thewatershed because of the known geographicdistribution; however, no specimens nor literaturerecords are known for specific localities.

Pseudacris clarkiGastrophryne olivaceaBufo valliceps

SPECIES EXCLUDED

Bufo speciosus has been reported from thewatershed; however, it is excluded from the faunain this study until more supporting evidence ispresented. The single specimen is from TX:Harrison: 2 mi. N 1 mi. E Karnack, Caddo StatePark (DMNH 2482,nv). This specimen has beentransferred to the University of Texas at Arlingtonand was unavailable for examination. The localityis well outside of the previously knowndistribution for Bufo speciosus and is within thedistribution of Bufo woodhousei.

The herpetofauna of the Caddo Lake watershedexists in the distinctive ecotone between theeastern deciduous forest and the westerngrasslands. The transition is most evident in thenarrow extension of the Texan Biotic Provincebetween the Austroriparian Biotic Province to theeast and the Kansan Biotic Province to the west.Compared to the herpetofauna of northwesternLouisiana, the Caddo Lake watershedherpetofauna has more species of both amphibiansand reptiles. This somewhat surprising result isprobably due to the greater habitat diversitywithin the watershed and to the presence ofspecies whose geographic distributions lieprimarily to the west of the watershed. The frogadditions of Gastrophryne olivacea andPseudacris clarki represent more western speciesin the watershed. Two more species ofsalamanders (Necturus beyeri and Plethodonglutinosus) are found in the western part of thearea. Among reptiles, the turtle fauna is the sameas that of northwestern Louisiana. HoweverSceloporus olivaceous and Cnemidophorus gularisrepresent western faunal components. Threeadditional species of snakes, Heterodon nasicus,Masticophis taeniatus, and Tropidocloniumlineatum are all additions from the west.

Of the 93 species that probably comprise theherpetofauna, 16 have the western edge of their

geographic distribution and ten have the easternedge of their distributions in the watershed.Another two have their southern edge and threehave their northern edge in the watershed. Thus,31 species (33%) realize their geographic limits inthe watershed. The 16 species of amphibians ofthis group represent 17 percent of the totalherpetofauna, the 15 species of reptiles, 16percent. This reinforces the importance of thisregion as an ecotone between major biogeographicregions.

Future workers should try to confirm thepresence of the following species in thewatershed:

Pseudacris clarkiGastrophryne olivaceaBufo vallicepsBufo speciosusRana areolataApalone muticaPhrynosoma comutumVirginia valereaElaphe guttata

In addition, three other species havedistributions that approach the watershed but atthis time are not known to be present within it.Kinostemon flavescens approaches to within 100miles or so from the west. Arizona elegans andHypsiglene torquata both approach from thesouthwest to within 50-100 miles.
