Workshop Descriptions

Getting Started This workshop gives an overview of “Prewriting”—the steps successful writers often take before they start writing a paper. Organizing Your Paper In academic writing, organization refers to the way paragraphs are arranged in an essay, and sometimes, the way sentences are arranged in a paragraph. Effective organization allows a reader to understand a writer’s message and flow clearly from one point to another. This workshop will help students learn how to organize an essay and practice using transitions to move from paragraph to paragraph. Introductions and Conclusions Many writers feel stuck when trying to write the first or last paragraph of an essay. This workshop will provide examples and strategies for starting or finishing a paper as well as practice with writing an introduction and conclusion. Thesis Statements This workshop helps students understand what a thesis statement is and why it’s important for academic writing. Students will get an opportunity to discuss and practice writing effective thesis statements. Editing for Clarity After revising the content or “ideas” in an essay, many successful writers review their grammar to ensure their sentences are clear and make sense. Becoming aware of the common types of errors we make as individual writers can help us fix our own errors. This workshop will help students search for the same type of error throughout a whole piece of writing and give students practice with different ways to correct those errors for clearer sentences. Summarizing, Quoting, and Paraphrasing Many courses ask students to use summary, direct quotes, or paraphrases to present other writers’ ideas and relate these ideas to their own opinions. This workshop helps students understand the similarities and differences between these three writing skills and gives students practice using them. Comma Rules This workshop covers common rules for how to use commas properly in a sentence. Students will also get some hands-on practice with using this tricky piece of punctuation during this workshop. Timed Writing* Many courses at SCC require timed writing, which can feel overwhelming or nerve-racking—even for experienced writers! This workshop helps students learn strategies to manage their time effectively, understand written assignments more clearly, and structure an essay with a purpose so they can finish a timed essay confidently and on time.
