This store has a wide range of musical equipment, displayed neatly over three levels. Other than equipment, Melodia also provides stage lighting and music lessons. Melodia has been around for years as a distributor, retailer and renter, and has a strong band of loyal customers, many of whom are professional musicians. Melodia also supports and endorses international and local musicians and events like the International Java Jazz Festival, Firehouse and Endah and Rhesa, to name just a few.

Though it might look like a small house from the outside, you shouldn’t underestimate Tiga Negeri’s reputation as a music retailer. This place has been in business since the 1980s, its first store being in Bandung. In 2000, they tried their luck in Jakarta and were met with great success. As you walk into the shop, you will see that the walls have become a wall of fame, adorned with signed photo-graphs of famous musicians. Tiga Negeri offers some great deals for its range of products. This place is great for beginners who’d like to form a band without have to worry about breaking their precious piggy-banks.

Serenta is remarkable for its collection of Fender guitars, as well as Pearl, Marshall, Jackson and Roland drums. Opening up shop back in 1994, Serenata has built a long list of loyal musicians customers, such as Ungu, Padi, and Kerispatih. The first floor features keyboards, pianos and accessories. On the second floor, guitars, basses and amplifiers are available, while all the way up on the third floor, you’ll find their drum collection on display. If there is something you can’t find here, feel free to ask because they just might have it out the back or available for order.

fX music is not only a retailer of music equipment – they also have professional studio facilities for rehearsal, recording and mixing, with super accurate acoustic reproduction, spacious rooms and high-end audio equipment and electronics. They also have music classes for vocals, guitar, piano, woodwind and brass instruments, drums and even traditional Chinese instruments. There are classes for audio engineering, DJing and, interestingly enough, photography. Need a coffee break? fX music has a comfortable lounge with big screens and tasty meals, as well as band performances on the weekend.

Makers mark La Douche Vita by Asti Surya

What is it?

La Douche Vita is a collection by Asti Surya that features two lines – Douche and Douche Essentials. Douche is a line for basic apparel that is easy to mix and match with your favourite jeans, killer heels or fabulous bags. Douche Essentials is designed for heavier styles and was born back in Asti’s university days, when she imagined Madonna, Karen O and Bjork strutting in her designs.

How did it start?

The idea for La Douche Vita came into fruition in March 2009, which makes Asti quite the new-comer. But her passion for fashion retail and her previous work in the industry and other creative

fields made it easier for her to jump into the business.

Why we like it?

She’s done a great job on the detail-ing for the Douche Essentials line.

Despite using common fabrics, her shredding, slashing and fringing makes it all

looked bold and glam.

Where can we get them?

Like many local lines, La Douche Vita is availa-ble on Asti’s web store, so you can start checking out the line or order at www.ladouchevita.com. If you prefer shopping in person, La Douche Vita is also available at the 27.11 Concept Store at the Salihara Art Complex (Jl. Salihara, no.16).

Just In

We can’t help but

admire this new Lomography Spinner 360 camera. Apart from its unique shape, the Spinner 360 lets you play with lots of creative techniques to get amazing panoramic shots. The basic technique is the standard spin, which requires you to hold the camera out steadily in one hand and pull the string back with the other. When you release the sting, the camera performs a 360-degree spin captures everything around it, including you. It’s a smart way to get you in the frame while shooting everything else around you. According to the official Lomography website, there are at least 10 techniques you can use with this camera, such as the overhead spin, the backflip, the tooth-breaker and the group hug.

The Spinner 360 uses 35mm film that lets you capture up to eight panorama shots per

roll, and though it’s a little pricier than most Lomographic cameras, the Spinner 360 (Rp. 1,600,000) is still a lot cheaper than the other panoramic cameras, such as the Horizon Perfect (Rp. 6,500,000) or even the Horizon Kompakt (Rp. 3,750,000). Tyara Putri

Last but not least, Dreamers & Believers’ pompom necklace is definitely on TOJ’s wish list

at the moment. As the brainchild of Dinta and Stacia, two artsy friends based in Sydney, Dreamers & Believers is a great fusion of graphic design and jewellery making. They started selling their pieces on Etsy.com, but now you can also checkout their pompom madness at 707 (Jl. Kemang Raya, no.8b. 021 718 0051).

With all the World Cup euphoria, it’s an understatement to say that the new Nike Elite series being worn by all the soccer stars are in demand. The contrasting colours are not just for the sake of style – they’re designed to enhance on-field visibility, so when a player is running in these boots, others can easily pick up on them in their peripheral vision – essential for those killer crosses.

All four series – the Nike Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II , Nike CTR360 Maestri Nike total90 Laser III and Nike Tiempo Legend III – are available at official Nike outlets.

Made in Indonesia

Having graduated from L’Institut Superieur des Arts Appliques in Paris, fash-ion designer Dian Adriani Jusuf is ready to wave the Indonesian flag around the world through the clothing industry

How does it feel to finally use your own name as a label? It’s overwhelming at first because there’s more responsibility than just using another name. But, along the way, I learned that taking that kind of risk gives me even more motiva-tion to be successful.

How would you describe your current collection? My interpretation of modern wom-en is ‘logical and emotional’. By that I mean, these day, women are asked to use their logic much more than in the past. However, I feel that women are also born with strong emotions and sensibilities, and these two contradic-tory combinations create conflict and harmony, which I find beautiful. In this collection, I portray emo-tions through drapes and soft, flowing fabrics and I express logic through

firm, sharp cuts and structural details. What do you think is exciting right now in fashion? The diversity of it all. We are now in an era where each and every design-er has more freedom to express their character in their work. It’s very exciting to see how designers are developing themes that they fully believe in.

How has the reception to the ADRIANI line been so far? Thankfully, my line has been very well received and featured in a lot of local media. Now it’s being sold at Gaya (Plaza Indonesia 2nd floor #G103, Jl. MH Thamrin, kav. 28-30. 021 392 7006), alongside the works of many other well-known Indonesian designers.

How would you like women to feel when they’re wearing your label? I’d love the women to feel graceful, elegant and confident in my clothes. It’s very important for

them to be able to walk comfortably

in ADRIANI. I’d also like them to feel reminded of the beauty of femininity and the strength of their inner power. Tyara Putri

On trial: SONY Alpha NEX

After much anticipation, Sony officially launched their NEX line of cameras last month. The details are exactly what you would expect - an SLR quality camera packed into a compact body. What is truly surprising is just how small the bodies are, with the NEX-5 in particular being tiny, easily able to fit into a pocket or purse. The NEX line also features the world’s first interchangeable lens cameras with an APS-C sensor to continuously adjust focus and exposure while recording HD video. Sony is going after compact camera users who are looking for a big improvement in picture quality, and even the most

hardcore shutterbugs should be happy with the NEX line’s picture quality. And more casual photog’s will appreciate the other things these cameras have in common with other compacts; there are fewer buttons and an easy to use interface that gives amateurs easy access to

advanced imaging features. A 14 megapixel Exmor sensor is the key to their exceptional image quality, extremely low image noise and creative defocus background effects that are familiar to DSLR users. Several features seen in these models were brought over from recent Alphas and Cyber-shot lines, including Sweep Panorama, Auto High-Dynamic Range Shooting and Anti-motion-blur modes These cameras are perfect for both point-and-shoot users that want to advance from snapshots to creative photography as well as existing DSLR users looking for a compact alternative without any compromise in picture quality.

As part of a series of events leading up to the LivingEtc Annual Design Awards 2010 in July, LivingEtc magazine recently held campus-to-campus seminars on three different themes, namely wall treatment, lighting and home accessories.

The seminars were held at a number of educational institutes, such as Bina Nusantara University, the University of Trisakti, Raffles University and LaSalle College.

They also invited students and professionals from interior

design, product and architecture backgrounds to submit their design projects by June 30 to win cool prizes.

All the finalists and winners will be announced at the LivingEtc awards night on July 30, which will include a special dinner and exhibition.

On July 26 -1, there will be an exhibition by ID 12 and talk shows about wall treatment, with speakers from PT Mowilex; lighting from Philips Indonesia; and home accessories from Hafela, which will start at 1pm and is open to the public.

On the awards night, LivingEtc will also launch ‘A Tribute to ID 12’, a special book that features 12 Indonesian Interior Designers’ artworks and their profiles. The artworks on display will also be for sale, the profits from which will go to charity.

So if you’re an architect, interior designer, property developer or just an design lover, please come along and show your support at this event. TP

House call

We dropped by the home of music director and songwriter Zeke Khaseli, who just launched his new album, ‘Salacca Zalacca’, in May. When we stepped into his house, the first thing we noticed was the small living room that he’s turned into a music space, complete with a stage, lighting, sound equipment, and a coffee maker. ‘This is where we usually do our recordings. There’s a CCTV and the monitor room is right in the studio,’ he said Then Zeke asked us to check out his studio. He started Black Studio back in 2004. While we were preparing to watch a set, Zeke sat on the couch with his guitar and played some songs from his new album. He also showed us his favourite guitar, a 1963 Gibson ES that he bought in Seattle years ago.

We then went upstairs to see his room. There were a lot of musical instruments, but the one he insisted on showing us was his theremin, an early electronic musical instrument with two metal antennas to sense the position of the player’s hands, which control the frequency and amplitude.

Zeke’s home also revealed that he is a huge fan of ‘The Simpsons’. In his room, we found a set of collectible figures. ‘I’ve still got a bunch of them in the closet,’ he said with a childish grin. Tyara Putri
