If you have a 2003-2004 Isuzu Rodeo,where the Check 4WD light stays on and youhave no codes, dont condemn the encodermotor. The correct procedure is to reset thetransfer case control module. This conditionoften happens when a technician or customertries to engage 4X4 Low with the vehicleswheels moving whether on the lift or theground ( In our case it was a technician at oneof our wholesale accounts who did it.) Theencoder motor sticks between its contacts

and then nothing happens and causes the lightto stay on.

On the Rodeo we worked on, thecontroller was under the center console whichwas easily removed. We then removed thetransfer case control module leaving itconnected. (See Figure 1) There are 4terminals which have to be jumped at thesame time while the module is connected in

order to reset the module (See Figure 2).

They are very small and hard to make contactwith. We used long straight pins to accessand make contact to terminals. We thenconnected the pins with alligator clips and

wires. Keep in mind that two of the terminalsdo not have wires in them, but there are malepins down in the controller that you have tomake contact with.

Once the jumpers are in place, turn thekey on. If your jumpers are making theproper connection, youll hear the encodermotor move/click. When that happens, turnoff the key, remove the jumpers and recheckthe 4x4 system. The light should be out and

the 4x4 system should work correctly. If not,you probably didnt make contact with allconnectors, try again.

If there was a different problem, youdmost likely have codes or the light flashingwhich will send you down another diagnosispath. This whole process took about a halfan hour once we had the information.
