A look at this afternoon’s two line-ups

On The Park

Welcome back to Park Road Stadium following a brief hiatus for reasons

we now wish to put behind us. We offer a warm welcome [again] to the Players, Officials and Supporters from Atherton LR who have made the journey to SK8 this afternoon.

We now enter a crucial period of games for Cheadle Town Football Club which ultimately will shape our season in terms of success or failure. It’s certainly imperative that we look to gain as many points as possible during the next two months to be in a position in or around the Play-Offs. The newly created Play-Off positions has certainly created interest for clubs like ourselves who are only a few points away and it will certainly be an exciting end to the season for us and other clubs who are also in a similar position. Apart from the disappointing result at Cammell Laird a couple of weeks ago, the start to 2015 couldn’t have been any better for Cheadle Town Football Club. It’s nice to see a settled side within the First Team that hopefully will be free from injury and suspension until the end of the season. Manager Terry Hincks has also used some of his Glossop connections to acquire the services of Richard Whyatt and Christopher Rathburn who have both made their debuts for the Football Club over recent weeks. It’s certainly going to be an exciting number or weeks ahead for Cheadle Town and that hopefully can continue this afternoon with a much needed three points. Today’s game is of course a re-arrangement of the fixture that was abandoned last year due

to floodlight failure. In a game that we were lead 4-1, lady luck certainly wasn’t with us that night as floodlight failure cost us the three points – so we need to make amends this afternoon and look for a repeat performance. Elsewhere our Under 21’s have a huge game tomorrow [Sunday] when they travel to Malpas in the Semi-Finals of the Cheshire F.A. Under 21 Challenge Cup. Our manager Charles Henry has worked wonders this season in pulling together a bunch of talented young players who are keen to progress in football. If you have any spare time either tomorrow or other Sunday’s, then the Under 21’s are certainly worth a watch and we fully believe that there are a number of players in this side that are more than capable of stepping up to the Reserves or First Team in the not too distant future.

Enjoy the game.

Division One Preview

We will start with the league leaders Cammell Laird 1907, who face a trip to Rochdale Town.

Hosts Town will hope that last week’s point at Hanley Town will be a catalyst to end their run of form that has seen them go without a win in nine league games. Meanwhile, Lairds remain unbeaten in the league since opening day, and have won 14 out of 15 league games since 18th October.

Fellow-Merseyside outfit Litherland REMYCA are involved in a huge game in their battle for a top six spot. At the start of January, Phil Stafford’s men looked outsiders for the play-off places, but REMY have hit form at exactly the right time, and have narrowed the gap between themselves and Daisy Hill to four points.

Atherton Collieries are the visitors to Litherland Sports Park. They are one point below Lairds with three games in hand, and their sensational season has shown no signs of letting up – on Monday night, they reached 100 league goals for this season. Interestingly, the sides will meet at Alder House in the semi-finals of the Reusch First Division Cup at the end of March, so the teams are also playing for a psychological advantage in that one.

3rd placed Barnton are some way behind the top two, but will be delighted with their first NWCFL season. Their only league defeat since the turn of the year has been a narrow defeat at Alder House.

AFC Darwen are making the journey to Townfield hoping to continue their push for the play-offs. They too have only lost one game in 2015, and have three of the league’s most prolific goalscorers in their ranks: Ryan Steele, Paul Coote and Stephen Lee. Both sides know that three points are crucial and the meeting should

be closer than the reverse fixture in August, when AFC Darwen ran out 5-1 winners.

Hanley Town welcome bottom side Oldham Boro. Since moving up to fourth in mid-February, Town have stalled a little, dropping two points at home to out-of-sorts Rochdale Town. Boro are definitely improving, shown by their excellent 1-1 draw at Barnton last time out. Unfortunately, a series of postponements have prevented them from building on that.

There is a clash between another two teams with hopes of extending their season as far as the play-offs, as Chadderton welcome Holker Old Boys. Chadderton showed their ambitions with a comfortable 4-1 win at 6th placed Daisy Hill last Saturday. They will hope that the defeat at Atherton Collieries on Monday doesn’t dampen their spirits. Their Barrow-based opponents (who are currently in 5th place) will hope for a win to signal a change in their indifferent form in the New Year.

Daisy Hill are on a poor run of form that has seen their top 6 position come under serious threat. They have lost 6 of 7 in 2015, and conceded four goals in each of their last two games. Northwich Flixton Villa travel to New Sirs without a win since their record 10-1 victory over Widnes in December, but have taken points in four of those six games - how you judge that is very much a case of ‘is your glass half full or half empty’!

A potential game of the day is at Park Road, where Terry Hincks’ Cheadle Town entertain Atherton LR. Sitting in 8th and 7th respectively, a win could propel either side into the top six. Town will hope that they are not made to regret the earlier meeting in the season, where they were 4-1 up, but the game was abandoned due to floodlight failure.

Laburnum Rovers were founded in 1956 by Joe Riley as an under 14s

side and after a difficult first season in the local Briarcroft Junior League, they went on to enjoy much success in League and Cup competitions.

Joe was persuaded to carry on into senior football and after a brief spell in the Leigh League the club joined the Bolton Combination.

More success followed, but the ground at Hag Fold prevented further progress so a farmer’s field was found and despite footpath criss-crossing and duck ponds either side, hard work by everyone at the club turned this unpromising field into a football pitch. In 1966 the club moved into its new ground and were able to take their place in Division One of the Combination. Jack Crilly succeeded Joe as Chairman and worked tirelessly for the club, supervising the erection of new changing rooms (an improvement on the old air raid shelters they had been using) and a small social club. Jack died suddenly in 1980 and as a tribute to the work he did the ground was renamed from Greendale to Crilly Park.

In the summer of 1980 the club joined the non-league pyramid when their application to join the Cheshire County League was successful. A stipulation of the League was that the towns name had to be in the clubs title, so links with the past were retained with

the new name of Atherton Laburnum Rovers.

In 1982 the club became founder members of the North West Counties League, being placed in division two until the league was reorganised in 1987 when ongoing ground improvements saw them placed in division one. 1989 saw floodlights erected and the club enter the FA Cup for the first time, while in 1991 the changing rooms and clubhouse were completely rebuilt. Towards the end of 1990/91 season Dave Morris took over as team manager and it was the start of the best period in the clubs history. In 1992/93 the club won the League title with 106 points from 42 games and also won the League Championship Trophy. Promotion to the Unibond League was denied them because of grading requirements, but undaunted the club repeated their double the following season as well as reaching the semi-finals of the FA Vase. This time the club was promoted to the Unibond League. Two good seasons saw steady progress, but then financial troubles struck and the club was relegated for the first time in its history.

Three seasons of struggle back in the North West Counties League culminated with the relegation to Division Two. However, the appointment of Alan Lord as manager saw a remarkable turnaround in form and nine successive victories helped the club win back promotion to Division One at the first attempt. In November 2002 Tom Foster and Dennis Haslem took over as managers after having to rebuild the team from scratch, they

Atherton LR FC Club History

secured Division One football for another season. Dennis moved on in the summer and Ian Street joined the club.

A period of stability and success followed but at the end of 2004/05 season Foster and Street left the club to be replaced by Mike Lester and Darren Ford, They set about building a new squad but, in February 2006, Lester and Ford resigned sparking a difficult time for the club on the pitch with no less than six managers at the helm over the next two years. The most successful period came in spring 2007 under Roy Sweeney when the club moved away from the relegation zone after doubling its points total from 21 to 42 in the final two months of the season.

Sweeney resigned in December 2007, with Malcolm Anderton taking temporary charge for four months until ex-LR player and Leigh RMI manager Stuart Humphreys was brought in to ensure the club retained its top division status and it was fortunate that 21st place was enough. With changes elsewhere in the pyramid system meaning LR avoided relegation at the end of 07/08 season, the club brought in Dave Hughes as the new manager with a brief to keep the team in the Premier Division while the club was reorganised behind the scenes. Hughes brought in a very experienced coaching team and set about building a squad which has proved very successful. The season ended with one of the highest league placings for several years, victory in the Goldline Trophy and another Reebok appearance in the Hospital Cup final. This season the side had a promising opening to the campaign recording another FA Cup giant-killing before injuries took a severe toll, with the team

battling in the relegation dogfight. Victory once again in the Goldline Trophy Final gave the team enough belief to collect the points they needed to stay in the Premier Division. Hughes resigned as manager at the beginning of September 2010 and the position was immediately offered to the Head Coach Glenn Moses to ensure stability within the team. Moses led the club to its third Goldline Final in three years and one of our highest league placings for several years but unfortunately further instability followed at the end of that season with the manager and most of the team moving on to pastures new.

At short notice former player Phil Priestley took the reins and with barely two weeks to build a squad from scratch before the season began it always appeared an uphill struggle. Despite some battling performances LR succumbed to relegation, and the 2012/13 season in Division One was also a challenge, despite some outstanding performances which saw the team beat all the leading lights including West Didsbury, Formby and Darwen over the course of the campaign.

2013/14 opened under new management as Michael Clegg was appointed and the season brought real encouragement on the pitch as the side secured a top eight finish with some tremendous performances, although off the pitch the club was plunged into mourning following the sudden death of long-term supporter Eddie Taylor - the Man with the Rattle. At the end of the season Clegg departed for Atherton Collieries and the club appointed another former player Ross McNair, to be assisted by the hugely-experienced former Ashton Athletic and Colls supremo Steve Pilling.

16 The Official Match Programme of Cheadle Town

Cheadle Town were left rue missed opportunities as Cammell Laird took their

chances to claim all three points.

Unbeaten in 2015, Cheadle Town entered this fixture at table topping Cammell Laird in great form and confident that an upset could be caused on the Wirral.

It was Cammell Laird who created the first chance of note on 6 minutes when a mix-up in the Cheadle defence nearly gave them a good opportunity, but luckily Cheadle managed to clear the loose ball at the second attempt to thwart the attack.

It was the Cheadle’s turn to have what was possibly their best attacking period of the game as Luke Hincks saw a long range effort sail over the crossbar on 16 minutes. Two minutes later on 18 minutes Thabiso Magida had an excellent chance to score as he cut inside from the left and could only watch as his shot fail to hit the target from 15 yards. Then on 20 minutes Nathan Neequaye beat the full-back for pace and could only drill his shot wide as he got sight of goal.

Just before half-time Cammell Laird had an excellent opportunity to score, but their first shot eluded the diving Stephen Piggott to hit the post before rebounding back out to a Laird player who half volleyed the shot back against the same post.

HT: Cammell Laird 1907 0 Cheadle Town 0

The early stages of the second half were pretty uneventful as both sides battled for possession in the midfield. But slowly Cammell Laird started to put pressure on the Cheadle defence and they were finally rewarded on 65 minutes when Cammell Laird’s #9 was able to pick up a loose ball on the edge of the area before firing home a low shot past the diving Piggott.

With the game coming to a close and Cheadle pressing forward for an equaliser, Cammell Laird increased their lead on 90 minutes when they broke away on a counter-attack and Laird’s #15 slotted the ball under the oncoming Piggott. Cheadle’s misery was compounded further deep into injury time as Cammell Laird’s #9 notched his second goal of the game as he was found unmarked on the right and he scored easily to seal the three points.

It was a disappointing scoreline for Cheadle as it didn’t reflect the fully story of the game. Ultimately Cammell Laird were more clinical in front of goal on this occasion, whilst Cheadle must learn to be more ruthless If we are going to compete against the leading sides in this League.

Cheadle Town was formed in 1961 as Grasmere Rovers playing in the Manchester &

District Sunday Football League in their Under-16s Division.

As the team developed the Under-21 Championship was won in 1968, followed by the Premier Division title two years later.

In 1972 the club made the significant decision to play their football on Saturdays and joined the Manchester Football League. Success on the playing field coincided with the arrival of Albert Pike as manager in 1978. In Albert’s first, full season he led the team to a terrific double of First Division Champions and Manchester Amateur Cup Winners; this was the prelude to even more success as the club won both the Manchester & Derbyshire F.A. Cups.

Grasmere Rovers moved into their own ground at Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, a year later, changed their name to Cheadle Town when they also joined the North West Counties Football League. Membership has mainly been in the Second Division but in 1996 the club was promoted to the First Division. Sadly, relegation back to the second tier occurred in 2001, a position they still occupy in the now-named First Division. Park Road Stadium has a fine history with, initially, Cheadle Rovers being the owners. On their demise Manchester City used it as their training ground. Portugal, along with Eusebio trained there during the 1966 World Cup and, in 1993, the world-famous Brazilian

player, Jairzinho, hosted a Soccer School for Cheadle Town. Floodlights were installed in 1995 and Manchester United provided the opposition for the official ‘switch-on’ when, on a memorable evening, Town beat United’s youngsters, 3-2 in front of almost 2,000 fans. The biggest gate to watch Cheadle on domestic soil came ten years later against FC United of Manchester. Due to the huge interest in the game Town officials moved the fixture to Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, and they were rewarded with a bumper 3,227 attendance that witnessed a pulsating 3-3 draw. The club is famous for its legendary foreign tours, having played 96 games in 30 different countries in front of over 312,000 fans and scoring 111 goals. Playing under their tour name, Manchester AFC, they have played against SEVEN national sides and once played in front of 65,000 people in Mexico City’s world-famous Aztec Stadium. Their epic journeys have taken them just over 210,000 miles all over the world. Alfredo di Stefano, Ronnie Biggs, Brazilian superstar Jairzinho and Rajiv Ghandi have all met the touring side as exotic locations such as Cannes, Acapulco, Rio de Janeiro, the Bahamas and Phuket have mixed with non-exotic places like Dar es Salaam, Haiti and Guangzhou in China. The club celebrated its 50th birthday in 2011 and, if the next 50 years are anything like the first, then there is a lot of excitement to come.
