Chaucer Casting Call-Erin Froelich
Everyone wants to be Steven Spielberg, but do you think
you’re up to the task? Geoffrey Chaucer has optioned
his work, The Canterbury Tales for production. This
means that there will be a casting call for actors who
might fit the roles. The most important roles are those
of the pilgrims, so they have to be cast exactly. Using textual evidence, YOU will
scour Hollywood for the perfect actors to fit each pilgrim mentioned in the General
Prologue. I want you to come up with the best actors for the job and submit their
“head shots” along with a little evidence that they can play the role in which they will
be cast. You may use this handy “casting sheet” to submit your final report.
Pilgrim Actor/Actress Head Shot Textual Evidence
The Knight Sean Connery He has an air of experience and can play a
night very well.
The Squire Rupert Grint Chaucer’s Physical description is close to
his and he is very much of the same
attitude, I think.
Yeoman Russell Crowe Chaucer’s physical description is close to
what Crowe actually looks and acts like
Prioress Maggie Smith
(Younger Age)
She is very pious and beautiful. She is very
close to Chaucer’s description as well.

Monk Ricky Gervais He seems very manly yet cheesy, out of
place, and is short and stocky like Chaucer
describes.
Cleric
Robert
Picardo
I
feel
with
knowledge
of
other
roles
he
has
played I think this would like be a
wonderful role for him.
Pilgrim Actor/Actress Head Shot Textual Evidence
Friar Michael
Weatherly
He can act like a major
sleez‐bag yet be very
cunning, manipulative
and handsome.
Merchant Hugh Jackman Is very show but has
played someone how
is covering up a debt
and I believe that
experience makes him
perfect for
this
role.
Lawyer John Goodman Devin’s drawing and
he has voiced and
played men similar to
this so I think it sits
him well.
Franklin David Hasselhoff He is a party boy, but
still generous
and
kind. He is also kind of
old
. ☺

The
Guildsmen(5)
Patrick Stewart,
Jonathan Frakes,
LeVar Burton,
Brent Spiner, and
Michael Dorn
They have worked well
together and seem to
be able to fit this quite
well. They play
commoners in one
episode of Star Trek:
The Next Generation.
☺
Cook Geoffrey Rush I just have this feeling
he could be gross
seeing as his character
on Pirates of the
Caribbean is kind of
nasty.
Shipman
Bill Nighy
He
can
be
scary
and
could play a
sinner/bad guy very
well.
Doctor Johnny Depp I feel he can portray
this character very
nicely. He
has
played
both a doctor, and
someone who has a
love of gold. ☺
Wife of Bath Helen Mirren I feel, while her
appearance is not
what Chaucer
describes, she could
most defiantly act the
way the character
does.

Parson Morgan Freeman I feel, again while he
does not have any
resemblance to
Chaucer’s description, he
could portray this
character very nicely.
Plowman Tim Russ I feel that he would
complement the
parson very well and
he would be very good
at this part
Pilgrim Actor/Actress Head Shot Textual Evidence
Miller Robert Duncan
McNeill
He seems to be able to play a very
tricky character even though he does
not look like what Chaucer said. Can
argue very well with the Reeve. ☺
Reeve Ethan Phillips He seems good for this part because he
can be very annoying and could play
and IRS dude very nicely. Also can argue
very well with the Miller. ☺
Summoner Has played a gross character and I have
a feeling he could be a person the
others would despise and he has
worked with the pardoner before.
Pardoner He has played a character with rattails
before and seems like a good liar, and
all‐around bad guy.

The Host Mark Harmon He is very well liked and trust worthy
and would play a very good guy. ☺
Manciple Tim Allen He can be very stupid but street smart
and would show this character very
nicely. ☺
