The ceremony took place on Friday 13th March at the Guildhall in the city of London. Mr Paisley was proposed by Aldermen of the city in recognition of his eorts to increase business between the city and his constituency. It is particularly noted the key role he played in promoting, at an early stage, the North Antrim company Wrightbus and their securing of the contract to supply the iconic London Routemaster buses. This has greatly enhanced business and commercial links between London and North Antrim. He was further proposed for his advocacy of the union in parliament. Speaking upon receipt of the freedom Ian Paisley said. “It is not everyday a person receives word that they are to be given the freedom of a city. But to be honoured with the freedom of our nation’s capital I am more than privileged and pleasantly surprised. I am very pleased that my proposer was so enthusiastic about the work I have done in promoting business and commercial links between North Antrim companies and London and that this has been recognised. I told the Wrightbus company about the honour last week and I know they are very pleased both for me and once again for another very positive mention of their world leading product and the workforce who produce it.” The Freedom of the City of London is one of the longest standing traditions in British history that dates back almost 800 years. Some of its most notable modern day examples include Florence Nightingale, J.K Rowling and Dame Judi Dench. “I am delighted with the working relationships I have had the opportunity to establish in London on behalf of North Antrim businesses and in cases such as that of Wrightbus it is very rewarding to see positive outcomes for Northern Ireland’s manufacturing sector as a result. I saw it my duty as a unionist to speak up for our Union in parliament this year during the Scottish Referendum campaign, I was delighted to speak publicly about the importance of its preservation. Being honoured in this way for doing so is very humbling.” MP RECEIVES FREEDOM OF CITY OF LONDON Mr Paisley upon receiving the honour swore the armation oath followed by reading the Declaration of a Freeman in the traditional Guildhall ceremony followed by a private reception in the state rooms at parliament. Ballycraigy Primary School is the first school in Northern Ireland to complete the Level-2 Schools Ju-Jitsu Programme which focusses on ‘Anti-Abduction’. This new and bespoke course is designed to make the children aware on the serious and real problem of ‘Anti-Abduction’ in our communities. It is also the first course of its kind to grade the children within the syllabus for their first Ju-Jitsu / martial arts belts within the school environment. The course syllabus is designed and was taken by local Ju-Jitsu coaches Paul & Mandi Timperley from Shogun Ju-Jitsu Ireland (under the Gov-erning Body of Shogun Ju-Jitsu International) who are currently running their bespoke pro-grammes in various schools through-out Antrim and the wider province. The finale presentations of certificates, belts and medals were completed at a special morning assembly on Tuesday 3rd March at the school, in front of the entire school and a gathering of proud parents, family and friends. The Principal Dr Hazel Edwards was delighted and very proud by the outcome of the course in her school; “We were thrilled to work in partner-ship with Shogun Ju-jitsu Ireland on the first Lev-el 2 course to be delivered to a Primary School in

Northern Ireland. The safety messages delivered and techniques taught will equip the children to keep themselves safe now and in the future. The children were so proud to be presented with their first White & Red belt. We want to thank Paul and Mandi for their continued support to the school and for the professional manner in which they deliv-ered the course.” National Coach and Ju-Jitsu Master Paul Timperley com-ments; “A big and warm thank you to the Principal Dr Hazel Edwards for giving such huge support to our children’s programmes over the past couple of years. She has been a valuable part of our team in the Community and in-strumental in helping make our Anti-bulling and Anti-abduction Schools Ju-Jitsu Programmes a huge success in the County for the children and

their families!” Paul continues; “All our children have the right to go to school / out and about and come

home safely and unharmed. Today’s society can be a very dangerous

place and unfortunately our children’s safety isn’t always

guaranteed against our best efforts to do so. Our

objective is to help ‘level out the playing field’ to teach as many children as possible a particular and focussed knowl-edge to help them gain confidence in

standing up for them-selves and by coming

forward to speak about their problems to staff and

parents. The ‘hitting back’ method is absolutely not the

answer and way to deal with bul-lying. From the point of leaving school

and outside of school, abduction is now a real risk for every child as it is already occurring in the province and our aim here is to support the

schools in helping to make the children aware of it. Also we aim to try and convince all parents to take the danger of abduction seriously, as it is happening and it is real!” Paul & Mandi Timperley continue to work both within the schools and their clubs in help-ing ‘stamp out’ bullying with a zero tolerance ethos. They teach proven techniques which encourage alternatives to violence, in helping children stay safe and happy and what to do should they face potential danger.Ju-Jitsu within local schools and communities can be seen on the national ju-jitsu website at www.shogun-jujitsu-ireland.com NEW BEGINNERS Ju-Jitsu classes are currently available for all children aged from 6 years old (or from P2). Please telephone Mandi or Paul on 07525 657880 to register your child prior to coming to the clubs. Mandi adds; “Well done to all the girls and boys who graduated on this course as they were excellent! The Gold Medal Winner and Champi-on student is lovely little Darcy, a great girl who did wonderfully well on both our courses at the school this year. A big Well Done to Kaitlin, Hayden, Nicole, Jessica & Alyssa, Winners of the Merit Awards and Ju-Jitsu Silver Medals!

THE 12TH MAN “THE 12th Man is a new and exciting supporter’s fundraising project for Ballymena United!” The 12th Man is a subscription based fund whereby members pay £10 per month into a bank account by standing order. 50% of these funds are given directly to the parent club, Ballymena United FC, the other 50% distributed as cash prizes. There are also spot-prize draws throughout the year such as; tickets, merchandise, hospitality in the board room and corporate lunches. Ballymena United’s Supporter Liaison Officer, Philip Simpson, said, “this inititive has been up and running for less than two months and already we have given out a thousand pounds in cash prizes as well as a cup final ticket, scarf and flag. That’s not a bad return for members, and just as important there is an additional steady income stream for the club to bolster the squad”.

Speaking about the benefits to the parent club, Ballymena United FC Club Chairman John Taggart said, “It’s really great to see new fundraising ideas things like this being started up and I am excited to see how big we can get the new 12th Man to be. The BUFC Board are fully behind the scheme and we hope it’s a huge success which will benefit in building a bigger and better United.” You can sign up to The 12th Man via a number of ways. You can download the Standing Order Form via the BUFC Club website at www.ballymenaunitedfc.com/12thman, and post it to the address on the form. Or you can come and see any one of the committee members at any home game. Philip added, “with over 100 members currently signed up we want to see that figure rise, so that we can push the prize pot higher and higher whilst also increasing the income for Glenn’s budget next season”.

FOOTBALLSCOTT QUIGG V CARL FRAMPTON SET FOR

SUMMER SHOWDOWN?BOXING SCOTT Quigg’s promoter Eddie

Hearn has made the first move to set up an all-British boxing super fight against Belfast’s Carl Frampton this summer. WBA super bantamweight champion Quigg was in Belfast recently to watch IBF king Frampton retain his world title. And the Bury boxer is keen to get a unification bout once he returns from the hand injury he picked up in the last successful defence of his belt against Hidenori Otake in November. Stumbling blocks remain but Hearn has revealed Quigg’s camp have put forward a big-money proposal to Frampton and his promoter Barry McGuigan. Hearn said: “We have submitted a proposal that will pay both fighters huge money. “I’m not sure if we will ever find an agreed split – I would be happy for a 60-40 purse split in favour of the winner. If you really fancy it I can’t see a problem with that. Let’s see. “We can talk about world titles and legacy

and exposure but ultimately this is a super fight – and in a super fight it is only right that these two great fighters get the best deal possible financially. “If we can all reach an agreement, then I would love to make this fight in June.“We’d be happy to fight in Belfast if the numbers were right, but likewise Manchester would be brilliant and so would the O2 Arena in London.“There is a long way to go but who wouldn’t want to see this fight?” Quigg, who remains unbeaten in 32 professional fights, is just as keen to dethrone Frampton and believes it is a showdown the British public want to see.The 26-year-old added: “It’s the biggest fight for both of us. “Who would people rather see fight: me and him or him and [Guillermo] Rigondeaux [who holds the WBA’s “super” version of the 8st 10lb title and the WBO belt]?“This is the biggest fight in the division – too big not to happen.”

The new Passat wins the prestigious award, which is presented every year by the international “Car of the Year” jury. The winner was announced on the afternoon before the Geneva International Motor Show.“We are extremely proud of this accolade,” explained Prof. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, at the prize-giving ceremony in Geneva. “In the new Passat, we have again succeeded in developing a car that sets the standards for its class in terms of technology and quality. This honour is a tremendous confirmation for the work of our engineers, designers and the entire team. The new Passat shows that the Volkswagen brand has the right answers to the challenges of our time.”Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for the Development Division, received the award for the new Passat: “We are delighted by the honour of “Car of the Year 2015”. This accolade has a very special significance for us because it is awarded by independent international trade journalists. In addition, the honour

THE NEW PASSAT IS CAR OF THE YEAR 2015

is known to have a high standing for our customers.”One of the oldest and most well-known awards in Europe, “Car of the Year” has been honouring the best new releases in the car industry every year since 1964. The jury, consisting of 58 European motoring journalists from 22 countries, had nominated seven candidates ahead of the final. In the preceding months, these candidates had undergone detailed testing, comparisons

and evaluations based on criteria such as economy, comfort, safety, driving characteristics, functionality, design and technical progress. In the 52nd edition of the traditional competition, the new Passat clearly triumphed over its six rivals in the final with a total score of 340 points. Two current Volkswagen models have already received the coveted award in the past, namely the Polo in 2010 and the Golf in 2013. In addition to the “Golden Steering Wheel 2014” and “Auto Trophy 2014”, the top position as “Car of

the Year” was preceded by several accolades at home and abroad. The new Passat, in all its versions, is one of the most successful mid-class cars in the world and with 1.1 million units (in 2014) one of the highest-volume series of the Volkswagen Group worldwide. Now in its eighth generation, the best-seller is regarded as one of the most innovative cars in its class. Thanks to advanced engineering methods, it was possible to introduce a significantly

more dynamic design (including lower body, longer wheelbase, larger wheels). Despite the unaltered length in the interior dimensions, the new Passat has still expanded considerably. At the same time the latest technologies have been added: they include systems such as Active Info Display (a completely digital instrument cluster), extendable head-up display, and

also systems such as an app-based Rear Seat Entertainment for tablets, Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring as well as three further global firsts: Emergency Assist (vehicle stops in emergency), Trailer Assist (assisted manoeuvring with a trailer) and Traffic Jam Assist. The new Passat is available with ten direct injection turbocharged petrol and diesel engines which cover a power range from 88 kW / 120 PS to 206 kW / 280 PS.

Fearne Cotton has announced that she is leaving BBC Radio 1 after 10 years. The presenter and DJ announced her departure on her official website, while also revealing that she and husband Jesse Wood are expecting another baby. “Jesse [Wood] and I are very happy to announce we are having another baby,” said Cotton. “I feel extremely blessed and happy that Rex will be a big brother, and we get to welcome another Wood into the world. “It has also been a time of big decisions, and one I want to share with you now. After much time and careful thought, I have decided to leave Radio 1 after ten amazing years. “I have had the most incredible decade broadcasting on Radio 1, meeting wonderful people, helping break artists and watching live music from the world’s best,” she continued.

“However it is now time for a new chapter. I would like to thank Radio

1 for being such a great home, and most of all, to the listeners

who have been on this journey with me. “It’s such a kick to know you heard a band on my show first, or that the songs I’ve played have helped you through the

day, so thank you. “I will leave with the best

memories and many great friends. Here’s to family and new

adventures.” Reports that Cotton was expecting another baby were sparked following her appearance at the Brit Awards on Wednesday February 25. Clara Amfo will succeed Cotton in the mid-morning Live Lounge slot on Radio 1, the BBC also confirmed on Friday February 27. Amfo, who currently hosts shows for Radio 1 and 1Xtra, will take over the weekday 10am-1pm Radio 1 Live Lounge slot from Monday, May 25. The presenter will continue to present

the Radio 1 official chart show. She will vacate her 1Xtra weekend breakfast slot from Sunday, May 17. Amfo said: “I am honoured and thrilled to be presenting such a huge show on Radio 1. The broadcasters who have gone before me have left an impressive trail and I hope to carry that on. “Doing this job is an absolute joy and to now have the opportunity to broadcast Monday to Friday is something that I am so grateful for,” she added. “I can’t wait to introduce a Live Lounge artist for the first time!” Ace will succeed Amfo as host of the 1Xtra weekend breakfast show, and said: “So excited to be back on the schedule! Can’t wait to get stuck in. I guarantee your weekend lie-in will never be the same again!”

BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show could move from its usual Sunday slot, following changes to music release dates. The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) announced February 26 that all albums and singles will be released at 12.01am on Fridays around

the world from later this year. The Official Charts Company has

stated that it will now “also be looking to move the UK chart announcement day”. “Exact details are to be decided, but Radio 1 will continue to be the home of the Official Chart.”

The majority of new releases come out on Mondays in the UK,

with the chart finalised at midnight on Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The changes would mean that a Thursday chart announcement would fairly reflect the week’s best-sellers. A Radio 1 spokesperson said that a decision has yet to be made regarding the chart show’s broadcast date. Clara Amfo currently presents the Radio 1 Official Chart Show, which airs on Sundays from 4pm to 7pm.

A number of printed sky maps are available online but there are a wide range of astronomy apps now available that can be used to quickly locate the positions of your closest celestial objects from your back garden. Or alternatively for a fun family day out, the Armagh Planetarium is currently hosting a show ‘Beyond the Blue’ which takes the viewer on a tour of the night sky visible to us in the Northern Hemisphere (prices are £6 for adults and £5 for children, family day passes are £20). So firstly, if we are lucky enough to get a rare clear night, where are some of the best places to go stargazing in and around our area, which avoid light pollution? Killylane Reservoir in Larne boasts a sheltered area, with light from surrounding areas being blocked by large conifer trees around the borders. Another

site which has proved popular for amateur astronomers in the area is Carnfunnock Country Park, just off the Coast Road in Larne. Northern Ireland also boasts a registered Dark Sky Discovery Site at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre at Oxford Island, which played host to the BBC Stargazing Live events in 2012 and 2013. Venus, known as the ‘morning’ or ‘evening’ star is visible above the south western horizon about 60 minutes after sunset in March. As Venus shows phases much like our moon, it will appear as a thin crescent in a good pair of binoculars and is best viewed in bright twilight conditions in the evening sky. March is named for the planet Mars and the planet is associated with the Roman god of war. Unfortunately it is a difficult planet to view compared to the much brighter Venus. In a good pair of binoculars it will appear as a pale pink disc. It currently sits low on the south western horizon, soon after dark, to the left of Venus, but will not appear as bright. Jupiter is the most easily spotted of the planets this month in the night sky. On March 2nd Jupiter and a three quarter full moon (known as waxing gibbous) moon are set to

align close together to the East, reaching the highest point in the sky together in the late evening. Jupiter appears bright white and is the most visible of the planets, outshining even the brightest stars. On a very clear night its four brightest moons, Ganymede, Europa, Io and Callisto, can be viewed with a pair of good binoculars or a small telescope and will appear as small pinpoints of light. Over a period of a few hours the moons can be seen to move around the planet. A partial solar eclipse of the sun will occur on March 20th, a nice way to start the Spring Equinox on this date. From Belfast the eclipse will begin at 8.26am, peaking at 9.31am, just in time for your morning tea-break. At this time 93% of the Sun’s surface will be covered. The next total solar eclipse visible from Ireland will not be until 2090. Viewing the sun directly, even for a few seconds can cause permanent damage to the eyes, even when the eclipse reaches its peak it should not be viewed directly. Sunglasses do not provide enough protection! Eclipse safety glasses can be purchased online for as little as £5 online. Never view an eclipse directly through a pair of binoculars or a telescope.

The Northern Ireland Amateur Astronomy Society (NIAAS) is based in Ballyclare and meets on the first Monday of every month from September until May. Regular telescope observing sessions are also held, usually at Killylane Reservoir but these are often at very short notice and are entirely weather dependent. Michael Donald & Rebecca Houton

BATTLE OF THE SHEDS

WE COMPARE THE BEST OF WOMEN’S AGAINST THE BEST OF MEN’S SHEDS.

John’s pub shed which won the pub shed category went on to beat off stiff competition from the winners of the seven other competition categories including Normal, Eco, Garden Office, Cabin/Summerhouse, Workshop/Studio, Unique, Pub and Tardis. Sewing serenity Manjit Sidhu, 37, a police officer, lives in Solihull with her 16-year-old daughter. Not many sheds have multi coloured chandeliers, rose print wallpaper and a lime green printed armchair by the French windows, but she wanted hers to be special. She built it two years ago, and had no idea how big a part of her life it would become. When she needs to forget work, she pops down to her little sewing shed, which is pistachio green and sits under a cherry tree strewn with lanterns — it’s absolutely beautiful. She spent £5,000, but says it’s worth every penny.

Chatterbox Verdict? Women 8/10Men 10/10

Overall British Shed of the year winner John Plumridge, from Shrewsbury, Shropshire, took shed decorating to new levels however when he spent more than four years converting his humble hut into a local pub. The shed, dubbed the Woodhenge Pub by its creator, houses a beer bottle collection of over 500 real ales, 110 ciders, and even spirit optics. Jubilant John Plumridge, said: “When I was told I’d won the competition, I was absolutely thrilled. “Normally I’m a very chatty and jovial person but I did find myself lost for words and I must confess to having ‘shed’ a tear. “I’ve been working on “Woodhenge” for around four years now and have enjoyed every minute of it. “I can’t even hazard a guess at the cost involved but it’s a great venue for our family and friends to party in and the good thing is we haven’t got too far to get home.”

A beautiful summer garden needs a choice of comfortable sitting areas in the most scenic spots for you to relax, soak up the sun, enjoy al fresco dining and entertain friends at different times of the day.A timber deck, which can be accessed directly from the house by patio doors, is especially useful for extending the living space outdoors and also gives the illusion of a larger home... but without shelling out a massive amount of money.Good idea: While planning, note that deck boards are best placed at right angles to your house so that they will draw the eye into the garden beyond. If the garden is narrow, though, you might prefer to lay them parallel to the wall to give it a feeling of width.Considerations:Before selecting your decking, there are some points you should take into consideration:Site:

Is the site flat, sloping or difficult terrain – can changes of level be built-in to add interest?Position:Is the deck shaded, in the sun, or will it combine elements of both? Do you wish to include features to add shade or screening from the wind?Privacy:Is the deck intended to be a private space or on public view? Will trees, shrubs, boundaries and buildings provide privacy?Services:Will the deck’s location interfere with drains and manholes? The design can incorporated the need to access such services.Usage:Is the deck primarily for adults or for family use? A children’s play area, featuring swing / sandpit can be included.Features:Many features can be incorporated into deck design – planter boxes,

seats, trellis, arbors, pergolas, storage boxes - almost anything is possible.Styling:What style of handrail and balustrades will need to be built in?Deck Boards:What type of board will be used for the surface of the deck? There is a wide range available providing variations in grain pattern and colour. There is also a choice of board to enable different effects to be created.Planning:Is planning or building regulation approval required? Not usually, however if you deck is above 600mm high different regulations apply and we would recommend you check with your local authority before starting the project. For more information see our “Timber Decking Regulations” Guide which outlines advice given by the Timber Decking Association, Building regulations and British Standards.

IT’S A DIRTY JOB BUT SOMEONE HAS TO DO IT Spring clean your patio: it’s a Dirty Job. Or Is It?Cleaning paving and patios is often thought of as a tough job and therefore tends to get pushed to the bottom of the garden to-do list. But cleaning the hard landscaping in your garden doesn’t need to be such a chore if you time it correctly and pick the best tools and products for the job. Why Do I Need to Clean My Paving and Patios? It seems obvious but regular cleaning of your paving and patios is essential to maintaining their condition and ensuring they last as long as possible. Moisture and bacteria can cause moss and algae build ups which, while making your garden look tired and unkempt, can also make surfaces very slippery. Cleaning off the moss before it gets out of hand can help to prevent accidents. This also applies to decking surfaces. Also, if left to their own devises, weeds can find their way in between the paving slabs and in areas you wouldn’t think were possible for them to grow. A regular clean will keep these at bay. When Should I Clean My Paving? The longer you leave dirt and grime on paving, the harder it is to remove it. And like most gardening or outdoor jobs, regular maintenance is key.You should ideally clean your garden patios and paving slabs on a dry day. This is so you can ensure that the cleaner or any chemicals you are using has time to fully take effect. But

this doesn’t mean you put off the job in the winter as this is when your paving and patios are going to get really dirty. Three or four times a year is normally enough. What Tools Do I Need? This kind of depends on the problem you are facing and how much the paving has previously been maintained. If your patio is in fairly good condition and its part of a regular maintenance routine, a bucket of warm soapy water or patio cleaner that prevents and kills mould, and a stiff broom is probably enough. If there is a little more work to be done, then a sharp tool or scrubbing brush will help to remove any weeds, moss and debris and a broom will sweep them away nicely. Most patio and paving cleaners will continue to work in the days after the product is washed away with a watering can or low pressure garden hose. This is a method that many have adopted as a quick way of cleaning paving and patios, but should be used with extreme caution. Pressure washers work by blasting the surface

with water and aggravating the dirt that lies on the paving to remove it. They can be very effective and when used correctly can keep your paving looking as good as new. Some models of pressure washer have an attachment where you can add detergents. However, many paving and stone manufacturers will not honour a guarantee

if a pressure washer has been used to clean the patio as they can cause serious damage to the surface of the stone or concrete material. What is the Best Way to Clean My Paving and Patio?Preparation is key whichever method you choose to clean

your patio. Ensure that the surface is clear of any debris, this includes loose dirt, dust and weeds. Remove weeds with a brush or kill them with a weedkiller. You can use a weed killing product that attacks the whole plant but you should wait the allocated time for the weeds to die off before cleaning and then sweeping the paving.

The Soapy Water Method

warm soapy water – You can use almost any soap based cleaning product, just check for any corrosive warnings on the bottle

paving – Start with a small section at the furthest end of your patio

using a circular motion - The amount of elbow grease required will depend on the condition of the paving

can, garden hose or bucket of clean water, wash away the soap suds and dirt, taking care not to let it run into your flower bed

The Patio Cleaning Product MethodThis is a general guide and you should always follow the instructions on the product carefully.

WHO IS SAFE GAS NI LTD?

Vino, pasta, sun and style? But is it better than sinking into your favourite nook of a comfy corner sofa with the wind blowing outside? The Italians do luxury well and style comes naturally. Their designs are sleek and modern. British designers are more

interested in what feels good. We care less about what people think and care more about how we feel. When we sit in a sofa, we want to relax and enjoy a cuppa and a chocolate biscuit. So, which do you prefer a chilled glass of Prosecco or a Pot of Belfast Brew?

DO IT BETTER? Recent news reports have shown that the market for commercial properties in N Ireland is growing dramatically, with performance in 2014 representing a 186% increase on the previous year. This is a trend very much apparent at 9yards where we are increasingly being asked to undertake design and consultancy work for the commercial sector, a part of the economy that had somewhat ‘bottomed out’ during the recession – helped in no way by the NI Rates system applying rates to vacant premises making them a relatively unattractive investment proposition. The tide, however, appears to be turning with more and more vacant business premises being let and new shops, offices and restaurants opening with refreshing regularity. In the last 6 months at 9yards alone we have worked on 8 offices, 3 restaurants a chip shop and an automated pharmacy, all in addition to our regular residential work. These commercial projects include the recently opened ‘Mayur’ Indian restaurant & ‘The Keep’ Grill in Carrickfergus, Abbey Insurance’s latest prestigious office at Boucher Road and the state-of-the-art pharmaceutical robot in McKenzies Chemists in Belfast – an operation like something out of a sci-fi move which simply has to be seen to be believed! So what issues face our local entrepreneurs when they are considering opening up in a new business premises? The importance of finding the right building in the right location is obvious but this is only the beginning. Negotiating rent and budgeting for commercial rates will be central to

cashflow projections and the Business Plan. Terms of the lease will also be important – many commercial leases are on a ‘full insuring and repairing’ basis meaning that the tenant will be responsible for the maintenance of the landlord’s building. Lease length can be a two-edged sword: a short lease (say of 2 years) can limit your liabilities if your business grows faster than planned and you need to move to bigger premises (or slower than planned and you need to downsize); yet the same short-term lease can see you spending considerable sums on shopfitting and equipment only to be ousted at the lease end or endure a hike in rent. These issues should be fully discussed with your solicitor and your business advisor but once these details are settled there is a further raft of legislation that you may have to deal with: Planning, Building Control and Fire Safety apply almost universally but your proposals may also require Liquor Licensing (restaurants, etc), advertisement consent (signage), Conservation Area consent, etc depending on your proposed use and the amount of refurbishment, shopfitting, etc envisaged.

We shall look at these issues in more detail in next month’s column but if you need to discuss any of these matters with more urgency simply call us at 9yards Archeticture– 02893 365 999.

From the age of twelve Derek Ryan had showbiz aspirations in his DNA. Having grown up in Garyhill near Carlow town in Ireland, Derek was bred into loving Irish traditional music by his family. Joining a boy band called D-Side in 2001 Derek had success with them achieving a number one in Japan as well as numerous top 10 hits in Ireland, UK, France, Germany and China. After his time in D-side, Derek returned to Ireland, after several years of gigging on the London function scene, Derek took time to consider many offers that were coming his way. Derek’s love and passion for country are best measured in his song writing ability as was seen in his debut single ‘God’s Plan’

Having also penned the official song for the Gathering in Ireland last year called

‘Welcome Home’ Derek has undeniable talent and ability

receiving enormous airplay and a deafening

call from fans to get on the road to play his hits live. His rise to stardom on the country scene has been phenomenal and there are few country stars who

can claim to have made such an impact

in just over two years, with sell out shows

across the country and touring in the UK and Australia,

not to mention a number one album. Derek is well ahead of his dream. Derek Ryan will be appearing in “Camerons Music Department” on Saturday 4th April at 3.30pm for a meet and greet and to sing a few songs.

Ian Paisley MP has this week welcomed the news that a significant number of local projects have benefitted from the Big Lottery Funds’ ‘Awards for All’ programme. There were in fact eight different groups across Ballymena, Ballymoney and Ballybogey who were successful in their applications to the scheme. In Ballymena the North Ballymena Community Cluster received £6527. The Community Cluster represents and supports a number of voluntary and community groups in the north Ballymena area. They are using the grant to run a series of activities that will bring older people together such as lunches, gardening, arts, crafts and away trips. The Ballymena Substance Users Support Group were awarded £8511. The group supports people affected by drug and alcohol misuse in the town. The grant is being used for training that will increase the support they can provide to the group’s members, equipment and activities such as cookery classes. Mr Paisley commented “Substance abuse is something that we do everything we can to eliminate from the area and we have a responsibility to protect users and help them to overcome their addictions. The Support Group are an exceptionally worthy recipient of Big Lottery funding.” The Ballymena Inter-Ethnic Forum were also awarded over £8000 to help them with the services they offer to the ethnic minorities in Ballymena. The project will provide bi-lingual interpreters to signpost members to support and information services, as well as supporting the group’s users to integrate into

the local community. Rasharkin Community Association received £3596 to help them provide a range of social activities for local residents. They are using the grant for a programme of events, which will include hip hop dancing, floral art and table tennis, which will be promoted at an open evening to mark the community centre’s re-opening. Ballymena Academy also received £8000 to go towards purchasing new outdoor gym equipment that will be accessible to pupils, parents and the wider community. Fuse FM is a community radio station in Ballymoney who were awarded £10,000. The grant is to be used to bring local people together through two fun days, one in winter and one in summer as well as a Scottish ceilidh. The town’s Bowling Club also received £10000 to go towards improvements to the club building to allow wider community use, while the Ballybogey over 50’s Club received £9318 to provide classes and social outings for older people in the community. The grant will specifically cater for trips, craft and community classes as well as a monthly luncheon club. Ian Paisley added “I cannot stress enough how important a role the Big Lottery Fund play in allowing these wonderful programs to function. The services that these grants afford the people of North Antrim are truly priceless and once again my gratitude goes out to both the lottery and the group co-ordinators who display such invaluable dedication to their local communities through these various initiatives.”

Camerons Meet And Greet With Derek Ryan

Mr Robin Swann MLA, the Ulster Unionist Party’s Westminster candidate for North Antrim, has called on the DUP Social Development Minister “to step up to the mark and develop more much-needed social housing in Ballymena”. Assemblyman Swann, who is UUP Chief Whip and Chairman of the Stormont Employment and Learning Committee, issued his challenge to the minister following a question to him in the Stormont Chamber. Mr Swann had asked the Minister for Social Development for an update on social housing development in Ballymena. In his response to Assemblyman Swann, the minister noted: “I am aware that there is significant social housing need in the Ballymena area. The current projected housing need for 2014 to 2019 for the Ballymena District Council area is 566 units. “Work is ongoing to address this and I can advise you that to date, as part of the 2012/2013 to 2014/15 Social

Housing Development Programme, 95 social housing units have been completed. “The Housing Executive is working with Housing Associations to ensure that the remaining 83 units programmed for delivery in 2014/15, will start on site before the end of this financial year. A further 377 units are planned between now and 2018, subject to budget. “Unfortunately, as is regularly the case, some schemes have slipped from the programme but it is expected that these will start on site as part of the 2015/16 programme,” the minister told Mr Swann. Mr Swann added: “At least I have got the minister to recognise that there is an urgent need for social housing in Ballymena. “In this respect, the minister needs to step up to the mark and give an assurance that the area’s social housing requirements will be a priority in his budget.”

Swann Calls For More Social Housing In Ballymena

Swann Challenges Ford Over Ballymena Court House

MR ROBIN SWANN MLA, Ulster Unionist Party Assemblyman and his party’s candidate for Westminster for North Antrim has challenged Alliance’s Justice Minister David Ford “to give a cast-iron guarantee that Ballymena Court House will not be axed as a result of the Minister’s cuts”. Assemblyman Swann, who is UUP Chief Whip and Chairman of the Stormont Employment and Learning Committee, issued his challenge to Minister Ford following a question in the Stormont Chamber. Mr Swann asked Mr Ford: “Minister, not only must justice be done, but it must be seen to be done. Local courthouses can be covered by local newspapers so that the local population has the confidence that your justice system actually works in some cases. Can the Minister give any reassurance as to how that will be facilitated?” In his response to Assemblyman Swann, Mr Ford noted: “I can see no reason why, in the case of Mr Swann’s constituency, a reporter from the local press cannot travel to Antrim courthouse and report what happens there, rather than sitting in Ballymena

and reporting what happens there. “These are fundamental issues of vital reform to ensure that the DOJ can live within budget. There is a very significant sum of money to be saved by making the reforms, and the DOJ budget is unsustainable if we do not carry through the reforms. “Instead of focusing on having a courthouse in every town, people need to focus on the facilities that are provided and the way in which victims and witnesses are treated in courthouses, particularly some of our older ones. “While they may be beautiful listed buildings, they are, in many cases, not providing the services that I believe our citizens need in the 21st century,” Mr Ford to Assemblyman Swann. Mr Swann said: “I am not happy with Mr Ford’s negative approach and I remain determined in my campaign to keep Ballymena court house operational. I also appeal to the media to join my campaign to save this much-needed service in Ballymena.”

Telephone : 028 9083 3568

I originally injured my ankle in a motorcycle accident in 1970. My ankle bone was fractured and it came out of its socket. This resulted in my ankle being surgically pinned. The pain really started about 15 years ago and it steadily got worse over time. To the point where it was difficult to work or to go for even a short walk. The pinning left my ankle stiff with very little movement which made it hard to walk over rough ground or up slopes. I attended Musgrave Park Hospital and they gave me a brace for my ankle but it was very impractical and the pain in my ankle was unbearable when I took it off. David says “The secret of the rocker is that unlike most ankle braces it is designed to facilitate movement not to reduce it. By mimicking the ankles own movement it reduces stress on the ankle foot and lower limb. Our patients often try a sample device during the examination to allow them to really get the feeling of walking properly again. My sister gave me a copy of the Chatterbox Newsletter and I read an article about a

new shoe insert which had been designed and developed by the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic. I phoned and made an appointment to see David Hallowell the Podiatrist who designed the device. David examined my ankle and said that the restriction in movement was the cause of my pain and that I would benefit from the new rocker device. The rocker has to be custom made so about a week later I had it fitted. With this type of ankle injury you can be in pain every time you stand up. For many of our patients just being able to walk around the local shops can be a real challenge. For some this can be very depressing. It’s extremely gratifying to be able to help them walk pain free again. It has been wonderful to be able to do a full days work with no severe pain and not having to limp around at night. I would recommend to anyone with this type of injury to give the rocker a go as I have found it to be of great benefit.

Healthy LivingFeed your complexion with

Skin Friendly Foods

Green tea is a rich source of antioxidants, plant chemicals that protect the collagen in our skin from damage caused by

pollution, cigarette smoke and UV radiation. Collagen gives our skin elasticity and healthy collagen prevents wrinkles from forming. Research shows that regular consumption of Green Tea results in improved skin elasticity. Why not swap a few cups of your usual tea or coffee for green tea every day.

Salmon is packed full of omega-3 fats, the good fats that produce healthy and plump skin cells and it gets its lovely pink colour from a nutrient called Astaxanthin. Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from the damage that contributes to aging. Regular salmon consumption has been shown to result in skin that is smoother and firmer with more moisture and fewer wrinkles, what more could you want? To benefit make sure you buy the best quality salmon you can find, ideally organic or wild Alaskan salmon.

Pumpkin Seeds Snacking on a handful of pumpkin seeds daily might just do wonders for your skin. These little green seeds contain lots of the mineral zinc, which the body uses to build and repair collagen and therefore

prevent wrinkles. Zinc may also prevent spots and support healing in acne-prone skin.

If you throw away the bones after your roast dinner on a Sunday you might want to stop right now. Boiling

those bones to make a stock releases a variety of nutrients that are fantastic for your skin. As the bones soften and break down they release natural collagen to

support the skin and an amino acid called proline that maintains younger-looking skin. For best results boil bones

for about 5 hours and use the stock as a base for soups and stew throughout the week.

Chocolate facials are becoming increasingly popular in spas and beauty salons and this isn’t a fancy gimmick. Raw cocoa

is one of the most antioxidant-dense foods in existence and eating a little dark chocolate, one that contains at least 75% cocoa solids, daily has been shown to protect skin from the damaging effects of the sun, potentially preventing wrinkles in the long run. Raw chocolate, sometimes called cacao, is

unprocessed and provides even more health benefits.

You don’t have to visit a cosmetics counter and spend a small fortune on expensive serums and lotions to enjoy younger looking skin. Next time you’re at the supermarket stock up on these skin-friendly foods that have natural anti-aging properties. Sarah Trimble Nutritional

VOTE Ian Paisley

PRINTED AND PUBLISHED BY JCPRINT & DEREK DOUGLAS ELECTION AGENT

DUP MP Ian Paisley officially launched his 2015 General Election campaign at Carnlea Orange Hall in Ballymena on Saturday evening at a dinner for North Antrim members and supporters. The event, hosted by Chairman of the party’s Bannside Branch Councillor Sam Hanna was attended by over 200 guests. Mr Paisley spoke to his party colleagues about both his manifesto pledges and also how crucial a role the DUP could play in the next Westminster government. It has been well documented in both local and national media the very realistic scenario that may emerge after the General Election where the DUP members of

the House of Commons could hold the balance of power for both the Labour and Conservative parties, such are the narrow margins that all the polls are suggesting in what is almost certainly going to be a hung parliament. Mr Paisley stressed how unionists have a wonderful opportunity that hasn’t been seen in one hundred years and stressed how splitting the unionist vote several ways, particularly in target seats such as East Belfast and Fermanagh and South Tyrone, could jeopardise this ‘once in a lifetime opportunity for Northern Ireland’. Speaking after the launch Mr Paisley commented “I believe I have worked very

hard for my entire constituency over the last five years, regardless of background and the fact that my office have handled 25000 cases since my election should demonstrate that. As Unionists we share one common goal, to preserve the union and ensure the best possible future for the people of Northern Ireland. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is that unionists come out and vote on the 7th May. I am thoroughly looking forward to an exciting and competitive election campaign and look forward to answering the questions of my constituents as I greet them over the next 7 weeks.”

“This election falls in the middle of an election cycle, with the European and local government elections last year and the Stormont Assembly elections occurring next year. This gives us a great opportunity to gauge where we stand as a party as well as reaffirming ourselves as the only credible choice for unionists. Complacency is our biggest opponent and providing we don’t allow that to creep in, I am very confident that our campaign team and support base will return yet another DUP victory for North Antrim.”

The conference came about following our youth leaders recognising a needamong our young people for practical direction in issues which are importantand relevant to them. Today's world for young people is challenging indifferent ways to how it was even ten years ago and we wanted to home in onspecific subjects. These will be on the subjects of social media andInternet use; biblical perspectives on relationships; and devotions andbible study and how they weave into your daily life.

Alongside this and following a sit down two course meal we are running anevangelical meeting in the evening with Rev Owen Patterson with a praiseband to lead worship which was made up from members of various churches inthe Ballymena area. We pray God will be glorified through all we endeavour to do in ourconference and that young people from all over the Ballymena area can meettogether and learn and benefit from the seminars.

THE LEGENDS OF AMERICAN COUNTRY - THURSDAY 16TH APRIL

At the heart of the village of Broughshane, a village well known for its plants and flowers, New Dawn Evangelical Fellowship is putting its roots down into the community and beginning to blossom in the surrounding area!It just about a year now since New Dawn called their first full time Pastor and began meeting in the Broughshane Community Centre. In that time it has been attracting support from all around the Ballymena area and has been seeking to develop its own ministry which is Christ centred, bible based, Spirit filled and people focused! The Pastor of New Dawn, Stephen Dickinson, told us that the vision of New Dawn is to ‘touch people’s personal lives with the love of Christ and show them that we genuinely care about them, as a person, in every way. We are developing ministries to young people, women, men, young adults, senior citizens, trying to get alongside them to minister in Jesus name. People of all ages are wrestling and struggling with huge issues in life and we simply want to get alongside them to bring friendship, support, encouragement, understanding, love and spiritual guidance and support. To help us do this we have established the New Dawn Helpline 028 9581 1999 which is open to anyone to use, they do not have to come to New Dawn, and we will endeavour to respond to them. We are meeting many people who have switched off church and turned away because of some ‘hurt’ they experienced in the past and we are delighted to have been able to reintroduce them to Christ and support them as they have become part of the New Dawn family’ New Dawn meets each Sunday in the Broughshane Community Centre at 12 noon and 7pm. These times together are bright, fresh, cheerful, enjoyable and filled with a real sense of the presence of the Lord! Lives are being touched and transformed in the power of God! At each meeting there is a bible message that

is relevant to life and real living TODAY! Pastor Stephen said, ‘we have been so encouraged with those who join with us week by week. We always have visitors at our meetings and we find that many of those visitors become regulars and we rejoice that they are being uplifted and encouraged as they join with us.’ We would ask your readers this question – do you think of Church as being a warm-hearted, caring, friendly, compassionate, fun-loving group of people – No? – then you need to visit NEW DAWN!’ Pastor Stephen added, Jesus said , ‘I have come that you might have life and have it to the full’ – New Dawn is about introducing people to Jesus Christ that they might have His abundant, eternal, transforming life in their own hearts and enjoy living their lives with Him to guide and provide for the every step of the way’The New Dawn Minibus is available to collect people to bring them to any of the services and anyone wishing to be collected can arrange that on the New Dawn Helpline 028 9581 1999. New Dawn have also established a Gospel Concert based in the Adair Arms Hotel, Ballymena, which will take place on a regular basis on a Saturday night. On the first two Sunday nights in June, July and August in the Ballymena Livestock Market, Broughshane and will be having a stand at the Ballymena Show where we look forward to meeting many new people and sharing with them about the work of New Dawn! New Dawn has quite a following on Facebook and on their website. On these the Fellowship share information, videos of our services, a thought for the day, and many other things besides.

The new Leisure Centre in Crumlin features three full size pitches, two of which can be combined to form a full size gaelic football or rugby pitch; a new fitness suite featuring the latest in hi-tech fitness equipment, a full size sports hall suitable for netball, badminton, 5-a-side football and basketball, a minor hall for activities such as gymnastics, exercise and activity classes as well as two community conference rooms (funded by Grow South Antrim) suitable for dance and which also feature a range of IT equipment and in-room kitchen facilities. Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Brian Graham was joined by local school children for the opening which took place last Wednesday (25 February). Pupils from Crumlin Integrated and St Joseph’s Primary Schools, Gaelscoil Ghleann Darach and Crumlin Integrated College enjoyed the new facilities and sampled some of the activities including gymnastics, Tae Kwon do and football. Speaking at the opening, Councillor Graham said, “There is no doubt that the new Crumlin Leisure Centre provides the community with the opportunity to engage in a wide range of sport and physical activity. We are extremely proud of the new facility, but it could not have been achieved without support of our partners Crumlin Young Farmers Club who played a pivotal role in releasing the land for the

development of two of the 3G pitches; Grow South Antrim for the financial support and the project team of WDR & RT Taggart, Hawthorne Consulting, Semple McKillop and Woodvale Construction.” Councillor Vera McWilliam, Chair of the GROW South Antrim commented, “This project was designed to meet the needs of Crumlin village and strengthen

the community infrastructure. The increased space within the

Leisure Centre has created additional facilities,

particularly for young people and groups who had previously struggled to find somewhere to meet and hold activities. Thanks to the new

facilities, this project will cater for the growing

population of Crumlin.” One of the primary school

children at the launch said, “It’s great to know that all the children who

live in Crumlin will have a place where they can come to meet and play, dance and run and enjoy each other’s company. I think that Crumlin Leisure Centre will be somewhere that we can all be proud of and can use to make sure we are strong and healthy throughout our lives.” Based in the heart of the community, Antrim Borough Council has invested just over £4.6million in the new centre, with an addition £205,000 from the rural development programme, GROW South Antrim.

A new suicide awareness network has launched in Ballymena to provide help and support to local communities. The group held their first meeting of the year on 29th January and hope to provide a supportive network and promote awareness around the subject of suicide and mental health. The network aims to offer support, walk-in services and complimentary therapies to promote positive mental health for everyone. Turning Point NI has high hopes to take their positive messages as far as possible into schools, working environments and urge communities far and wide to seek support in a confidential network. The group will be holding regular meetings and will train local volunteers to advance awareness and deliver helpful services the community. Paul Frew MLA for North Antrim who is supporting the group commented, “It is so important to get these helpful messages to those with suicide ideation and promote emotional well-being to all in our local circles. I sincerely hope to see the much needed positive changes being enhanced in the area and ultimately dropping suicide figures. I believe Turning Point NI will be a fantastic contributor in this and enhance the mental welfare of

people in Ballymena.”Trudi Hall, Chairperson of Turning Point NI said, “It is great to get members of the community involved in such as important cause. I want people to know they are not alone. The stigma attached to mental illness and depression is preventing so many from getting the help that they need and the help that is there for them. My hope for Turning Point NI is that we can remove the ignorance our society attaches to suicide ideation and tell those needing help that facing mental illness alone and leaving it untreated is not an option.” Turning Point NI urges anyone interested to get involved. Trudi expressed, “I want to see partnerships being built amongst our local people and organisations with the attitude of working together to make the changes we all want to see around Ballymena. Paul Frew MLA has been very supportive and has made a tremendous impact to our group already , advising and helping to open doors for the group . Everyone can join to show their support on our social networks, search ‘Turning Point NI’ on Facebook and follow us on Twitter, ‘@TurningN’. If you are have an interest in becoming a member or getting involved with the group and are over eighteen, contact Trudi on 07463261166.

If you’re a Senior based in the Antrim Borough Council area and computer information seems to sweep over your head, then you’ll definitely benefit from attending a FREE drop in session on Thursday 19 March from 10am to 1pm at Clotworthy House, Antrim Castle Gardens. Kerry Brady, Community Support Officer explains, “The Seniors Forum which meets in the Council every month made a valid point recently in relation to computers when they said that technology is available but no-one seems to answer the basic questions they have! It’s easy to think these days that everyone has the same access to computers and the Internet but the Seniors Forum highlighted an important gap in information and services. We need to ensure there are opportunities for all groups and individuals to be part of the technological age, particularly as so many organisations now use the Internet as their main method of

communication with the public.” Kerry adds “It will be a very informal session. You can ask whatever burning questions you have and they will be answered in a language you understand. Perhaps you want to know what you should buy - a computer, a laptop or a tablet - or you just want to see if you can make more use of your phone. Maybe you want to Skype your grandchildren in Australia and need to get online? These and many more of your questions will be answered by a group of very helpful people from Ignite IT. So, why not come along, have a cuppa with us and get yourself informed? We’d love to see you there”.

To reserve a place please contact Tracy Hefferon T: 028 9446 3113 ext. 31342 or E: [email protected].

North Antrim MP Ian Paisley is backing Macmillan Cancer Support's campaign for all patients to be treated with the highest levels of dignity and respect, and for NHS staff to be supported to do so. At an event in Parliament, Mr Paisley met people affected by cancer who shared their own experience and raised the importance of being listened to throughout their journey. Macmillan healthcare staff at the event, also shared their stories about caring for people living with cancer and highlighted the importance of feeling supported and engaged in order to deliver the best possible care. Macmillan’s new report ‘The people behind cancer care – Patient and Staff stories' emphasises the importance of putting people at the heart of our cancer care by hearing from cancer patients and staff alike. The report presents stories from 10 patients about their experiences of care at different points of their cancer journey. It also features insights from staff into the good and bad aspects of their work and how their own experiences determine the

quality of care provided. Ahead of the general election in May, Macmillan is calling on all political parties to make a commitment in their manifestos to ensure that all patients, including cancer patients, are treated with the highest levels of dignity and respect, and that staff are supported to deliver this. Speaking on the subject, The MP said: “Every person diagnosed with cancer should be treated with dignity and respect and not as a set of symptoms. NHS staff work incredibly hard to deliver high quality care in challenging circumstances. However, as Macmillan’s report shows, there is still room for improvement to tackle cases of poor care and staff disengagement. “If patient care is to be improved across the NHS, both staff and patients need to be listened to and their feedback acted on. This can make a major difference to how patients experience their care and even recover from cancer treatment. Macmillan's campaign aims to ensure all patients are treated as individuals and I am very proud to support it."
