We hope we have equipped them with answers todefend the right of the Jewish people to a national homeland and with questions so that they can enter the complicated debates thattake place in Israel about politics, power, and peoplehood.

Israel that Matters

For many of our students’ parents and grandparents, Israel is viewed as a safehaven for Jews. For today’s generation that lives at a time when Jews aroundthe world live in relative freedom and security, we need a more compellingand relevant narrative. It must be a narrative that focuses on the values that Israel embodies, thechallenges Israel faces, and the aspirations that its people hold in their hearts. If we can help our students find meaning in this type of narrative, then they willnot only stand up for Israel but know what Israel stands for.

By the time our students graduate, I wantevery TanenbaumCHAT student to have ananswer to the most fundamental questionsabout Israel: Why does Israel matter in mylife? How does my relationship with Israelcomplete me as a Jew? How can I participatein and perhaps even influence what goes onin Israel and in that way share in Israel’sdestiny?

TheGuttman Family ScienceWingenjoys a stellar opening year !The new Guttman Family Science Wing has seen atremendous level of excitement since its opening inSeptember. The science faculty have always inspired ourstudents to pursue further studies and careers in the fieldsof science, technology and engineering. Now our newwing has expanded opportunities for our students. The space offers more technical and more hands-onexperimentation, delivering a more engaging atmospherefor students who previously had limited interest in

science. Our central Kimel Square is used for groupactivity. No more classroom disruptions and moreopportunity for participation. In the Greenberg FamilyGreenhouse students are growing their own samples foruse in their Biology and Microscope units. Most exciting, this year saw the Gales Project room ashome base for the Titanium Tigers, TanenbaumCHAT’snew Robotics Club. Physics and Mathematics teacher NeilEpstein coached these new Tigers as they made theirdebut at The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) wherehigh-school students build the most impressive robotsyou’ve ever seen. Built from scratch in only 6 weeks, these

5 foot tall, 140 pound robots compete in high intensityrobo-sports. The students benefit from not only havinga tactile hands-on experience, but the competition alsoallows the students the opportunity to manage a complexmultidisciplinary project. Students must learn to design, prototype, build, wire, program and document in order tocreate a successful competition ready robot. The new wing was host for the annual Tanenbaum-CHAT feeder school Science Fair & Olympiad this year.Grade 8’s from community day schools got a chance tosee the great facilities that will be their new home nextyear!

THANK YOU to all of our donors whose generous support made all of this possible. The newly launched DNA Wall will be another impressive feature ofpermanent donor recognition in the new wing. This artistic impression of DNA will be a another opportunity for our community’s philanthropic supportthat will ensure our students continue to enjoy innovative science programming. When TanenbaumCHAT began to offer the Duke ofEdinburgh’s Award Program in 2009, only a handfulof students participated. Now 5 years later, it hasgrown to over 60 students!

Sabrina Craig, TCW ’14 and Josh Morris, TCK ’14 are twostudents that successfully reached the Gold level this year. Theydescribe their experience participating in this prestigious program:

We congratulate and commend all TanenbaumCHATstudents who are participating in or have completedthis program!

“I decided to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh programbecause it has the ability to boost me to the next level and distinguish my resume from others. I loved challenging myself to get involved in a balanced amount of extracurricular activities as well as trying new things. I would advise any student from TCW or TCK to participate in the program. Though it seems like a large commitment I found I was surprised how much of the requirements I already participated in and how simple it was. The experience was nothing but gratifying.” – SABR INA CRA IG

“At the age of 14, I enrolled in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program in order to get involved in my community as a young leader. This award was an extremely rewarding experience as I explored new activities and pursued current interests while giving back to my community. Highlights of my journey to completing the gold level award include a four-day hike in Algonquin Park and playing competitive hockey and tennis. This experience has allowed me to become a well-rounded individual with an expanded set of skills and interests. This award is an excellent way to get involved outside of the classroom and contribute to your community.” – JOSH MORR I S

After graduating junior high school at Dufferin Heights alongWilmington (now Charles H. Best, East) in 1976, I decided togo to CHAT for high school. Little did I know then that thiswould be the beginning of a 38-year “love affair” with theschool. I returned to start teaching in 1986 before moving intomy present position in the guidance department in 2002. Ilook forward to coming to work every day because every dayis different and exciting, the staff and students are congenialand engaging, and the school is always bubbling with some

type of activity, program, fundraiseror other special event. In my opinion,TanenbaumCHAT is one of the finestJewish high schools around, combininga challenging and well-rounded JudaicStudies curriculum with a highlyacademic General Studies program. My wife, Leora, taught Economicsand Entrepreneurial Studies hereand two of my children have alsofollowed me to the Kimel Centre(Uri ’15andYoni ’14), truly makingTanenbaumCHAT a “family affair”in the Stoll household.”

Having recently celebrated the class of 1984’s30th anniversary, together with 35 fellowalumni, we were able to reconnect friend-ships that were made a lifetime ago and toreminisce about the good times we sharedtogether. I have been privileged to be part ofall 4 of our past reunions. The years togetherat CHAT gave me a sense of family and com-munity and it was these feelings that I

wanted my own three children toexperience. CHAT provided mewith a platform that solidifiedmy commitment to Judaism, theJewish community and EretzYisrael. The friendships that werecreated at CHAT are still dear tome today. It was these attributesthat reaffirmed my commitmentto providing my children withthe same opportunities thatCHAT afforded me.”

• RISAGREEN ELMALEM ’84 •

Returning to TanenbaumCHAT reminds me of a world whereeverything was possible. Where questioning what it is to beethical, or facing off with your teachers in trivia, and dressingup for charity occurances were all everyday occurances. As an alumni speaking at Career Day or in a classroom,I always think to myself: “what would be the advice I wouldgive myself at that age?” Often, it’s just to comfort them thatthey don’t need their whole lives planned out by 16. Whethervolunteering on the West Virginia Community Service Trips or

speaking about social justice inclassrooms, it’s amazing to see anew generation of students whosee Tikkun Olam as core to theirresponsibility as Jews and GlobalCitizens.Coming back is important,

because while the buildingand hallways may change forthe better, the core strengthof TanenbaumCHAT remainsthe same – preparing strongnetworks of Jewish leaders totackle the urgent challengesof our time.”

THIS WAS THE IDEA BEHIND

TANENBAUMCHAT ALUMNI JOSH STERN’S ’08

INITIATIVE #FEEDTHEDEED

These past few weeks have been truly amazing. It really goes to show howone small act can make such a difference in the world. Sometimes we needthat reminder and extra little motivation to go out and do good deeds –and through the power of social media, we have successfully achieved that. Not only have Neknominations been defeated, but thousands of dollarshave been donated to charities, those less fortunate are receiving food andclothes, and people are even facing their fears to donate blood for the firsttime. #FeedtheDeed is really ‘Tikkun Olam’ gone viral!”

JOSH STERN ’08, FOUNDER OF #FEEDTHEDEED

Inspired by a harmful social media trend called Neknomiations, Josh saw the potential to turn theidea of challenging a friend to one-up your own actions, into a meaningful social media initiative. This new initiative helped to inspire and promote performing acts of kindness to both friends andstrangers, before passing the torch to a friend. The initiative joined forces with KINDNESS COUNTS, another social media program ledby alumni RUSSELL CITRON ’09, which uses creative and unconventional approaches tospread and inspire kindness across the community. Their efforts have seen tremendous response from peers, parents, and community members fromall over the world. One participant got involved by handing out Applebee’s gift cards to strangers in Michigan, whileanother delivered flowers to his favorite sushi waitresses. Countless books have been donated tolibraries and hospitals, subway tokens have been handed out, and notes of appreciation have beenleft on cars and desks. Our own TanenbaumCHAT students have been busy around the school andcommunity doing their own acts of kindness.

“ Seeing the happiness on people’s faces when they’re receiving an act ofkindness are really moving. And what that smile tells, and what I keepcoming back to when I think about the Feed the Deed initiative, is thatif the entire campaign just inspired one video, one act of kindness, oneconversation about kindness at a dinner table, it would all be worth it.Thinking about how many people took time out of their days to be kind toothers – how many minutes have been spent on kindness – is incrediblyinspiring, and reminds us that we can use creativity and the power oftoday’s world to spread ‘active kindness’. And in short, that’s whatKindness Counts is all about.” RUSSELL CITRON ’09,

FOUNDER OF KINDNESS COUNTS

We would like to nominate all of our readers to do agood deed and pass it forward to your friends and family.

HAS WRITTEN HER FIRST NOVEL

•SOLDIER DOLL•

We caught up with JENNIFER, and askedhow her CHAT experienceshelped her with her writing.

Jennifer’s advice to any aspiring writers would be “write as often as you can, and read evenmore than that . . . don’t be afraid to take risks. It’s fiction – the sky is the limit in terms ofwhat you can do”

Two chapters in my book address issues related to WWII and the Holocaust. For these chapters I obviously drew extensively on my Jewish educationat CHAT. I don’t have any survivors in my family, so I went back and re-examined a lot of the sourceswe used in our history and Jewish history classes. Aswell, many of the Yom Ha’Shoah and other programscame to mind when writing – I can vividly recall onesurvivor telling her story during a school assembly.

I have always been an avid history buff, and look back on classes in history and Jewish history with great fondness, especially with teachers Sam Kapustin, Alex Gropper and Diane Pasian.”
