Chatter-Barks Obedience Club of Daytona, Inc. Volume 36 / Issue 3 www.ocodb.org March 2018 President’s Message, “General Club Business” Next Meeting 7:00 PM Monday, March 12, 2018 As I have followed the progression of this season’s flu virus, I have been thinking about last year’s canine flu outbreak. It caught many of us by surprise and, as you will recall, caused OCOD and other indoor facilities to close for weeks. Although we are hoping 2018 will be better, NOW is the time to consider whether or not you will change your participation in dog events should there be another outbreak and discuss with your vet whether or not the vaccine is a good choice for your dog. Let’s be proactive. From a serious topic to a simply annoying one: paper towels. We go through a ridiculous number of paper towels in the training center. Whenever a bowl of water is spilled, the first thing everyone reaches for is paper towels and a single spill can use half a roll. Multiply that by dozens of dogs and you can see the problem. We expect paper towels to be used in the restrooms and to clean up dog accidents. But please bring an old towel with you to the TC in case you or a friend should spill a bowl of water. Puppy and Basic teachers: we need to bring an extra towel because the students just don’t remember. Keep in mind, the money we waste on paper towels is not available for other needs. Thanks for keeping these issues in mind. As I have followed the progression of this season’s flu virus, I have been thinking about last year’s canine flu outbreak.

Sincere Sympathy to Joyce Swegle

on the loss of her Son in law.

NOTICE !

There will be no more Raffle Baskets at our Trials. If you have donated something and it wasn’t already used, you can pick it up, it might be in the room upstairs.

Thank you for all your help in the past.

Collecting small soaps and shampoos for domestic abuse victims.

Do you have a collection of small soaps and shampoo bottles from hotels that were so cute you just had to take them home? And I’ll bet they now sit in a drawer of your bathroom to be never used. OCOD is collecting these small personal hygiene items and will be donating them to the local Domestic Abuse Program. As you may know, many domestic abuse victims leave their homes with only the clothes on their backs and a little luxury like a small bottle of nice shampoo can be a bright spot in their day.

We will have a basket in the front of the training center to leave any donations you wish to make. The basket will be there until at least April 1st. Thank you in advance for helping those who need a helping hand.

Obedience Club of Daytona General Meeting Minutes February 12, 2018

Meeting was called to order by Pat Mozden at 7:07PM.

Sign in sheet was passed around and is attached to hard copy of minutes. 23 members were present and there were no guests.

Wins and brags were announced and are in the newsletter if you emailed them to Joan.

Minutes of the last meeting were published in the newsletter and so were not read at the meeting. No additions or corrections were made.

Report of the secretary: There were no new member applications and no correspondence. Since JoanC is under the weather, she was not able to collect any member applications from the post office box, but if there were any, they will be considered as read at this meeting.

Report of the Treasurer:

January Expenses: $38,287.10 (Trials were ~$19.5K and Class Income ~9.4K)

January Income: $21,924.30 (Trials ~$16.1K and rent ~$3.0K)

December OB and R Trials: Income: $9,951.00 and expenses: $6063.01.

January Agility Trials: Income: $19,704.00 and expenses: $16,691.11.

Report of the Board of Directors:

Nothing to report.

Old Business:

Agility Trial: LindaH reported that we had a good trial thanks to the wonderful support of so many club members and exhibitors. Gail Storm the agility field rep was present and had some suggestions for future trials.

Donations for 2017: Coralee motioned that we donate $750 to Sophie’s Circle and $750 to Southeast Volusia Humane Society. Reneé seconded. This would replace the motion that Hoke made in November to donate $1500 with $500 to each of Sophie’s Circle, Southeast Volusia Humane Society and another animal group that we have not been able to locate. 21 in favor, none opposed.

Tracking Tests: Pat Dean reported that we had successful tests last week. There were 6 TDs and 1 TDU. Two passed. Pat has never been to a test nor trained a dog in tracking and we are grateful for her outstanding job as chair and secretary. She in turn thanked Joyce and Robin for their help in getting the AKC paperwork completed in proper order.

Public Education: Sandy reported on the Super Bowl event at Half Wall. There was a huge turnout which gave us a lot of exposure. We will also be out at 4Ever Fitness for a 5K run on Saturday, March 10th where Sandy will run with her dog. She would love for any of us who can come out to help man a table for this event. Port Orange Library has also asked for us to come out to talk at one of their summer camps for teenagers on June 21st.

New Business:

Program Next Month: will be on dental cleaning.

Non-anesthetic Teeth Cleaning: will be held for $150 per dog. Nina will distribute a flyer with info

and how to sign up for a time slot. Approximately 20 minutes per dog.

Scentwork: Reneé announced we will have a scentwork seminar March 3rd, 2018 and a Sniff n Go on

March 17, 2018.

Sign Out Front over our front door: Pat will check into the cost of replacing the sign that has become

extremely smudged and hard to read.

Raffle Baskets: We have noticed a decline in interest for our raffle baskets at the last two trials. The amount of donations and effort to put them together does not match the return so we will stop doing raffles

at the next few trials. If people do seem interested, we can revisit offering raffles again.

Domestic Abuse Donations: We will have a collection box at the front of the building for members to

donate toiletries that can be donated to the Domestic Abuse Council.

Cleaning Days for 2018: will be held on Saturday, March 10, Sunday, May 6, Sunday, July 8 and Saturday, November 17. Emails will be sent out as reminders and also when additional opportunities for

cleaning arise. In order to be eligible for the member discount on classes, we need to help out at one

cleaning day in the first half of the year and one cleaning day in the second half. (Side note: Class CREDITS

are different from Class discounts and CREDITS are not affected by this rule. CREDITS are only earned by

teaching or assisting at our classes.)

Class Refund Checks: will be sent out 30 to 45 days after the check was deposited in order to avoid

sending a refund on a bounced check. This note will be added to the class application form. Refunds for

cash payments will be made sooner.

C Match: is planned for April 7, 2018. LindaS is not able to do it this time and will mentor a

replacement. We typically have 8 judges, two for each ring so they can take turns and run their own dogs, two stewards for each ring plus floaters and two registrars. We typically have a good turnout and are

finished by 2PM.

Shelter Dog Seminar: will be held in Orlando April 7 and 8. Sue Sternberg is the speaker. Pat will be

going and is hoping to get 5 people together so that we can get a discounted price of $125 per person for

both days. Cheri motioned that for a total of $500 we fund scholarships for four slots for attendees from shelters in the surrounding area. Coralee seconded. Discussion included contact ideas that included

Southeast Volusia Humane Society, Halifax Humane Society, Flagler Humane Society and a number of other

ideas. 22 in favor, none opposed.

Shirley motioned we adjourn at 7:40PM.

Respectfully Submitted, Chris Franczek
