FIRST LUTHERAN AT CITY HALL THIS FRIDAY!: First Lutheran Church & School families are invited to join us to commemorate the 90th anniversary of First Lutheran Church this Friday, February 20th, at City Hall. For the first 10 years of the church’s existence, church services were held in the civic center of city hall. Because of this, at 2:00 we will have a reading of First Lutheran Church’s history and a proclamation will be read by vice-mayor Mark Macy.

LAUGH OUT LOUD PHOTOGRAPHY (PS & PK students): Laugh Out Loud Photography will be here on February 19 & 20 taking photo’s for our Pre-School and Pre-Kindergarten families. They only do children’s pictures, and the pictures will be with the theme of “Kool Kids”. If you would like to see an example of their work, visit http://laughoutloudphoto.com/. To preview/order photos of your child, visit their table by daycare February 19 or 20 between 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Parents who view the pictures during these hours will receive a free gift. All children photographed will receive two Child Safety I.D. cards.

TALENT SHOW: Talent Show: We’ll be hosting the Talent Show on Friday morning at 8:30 and again Friday evening at 6:30. We have some great performances being polished this week; we hope to see you there.

CHAPEL OFFERING: Our chapel offerings for February and March will go to “Stand for the Silent”—a non-profit that supports an agenda of kindness and gentleness and non-bullying. FLS has a Stand for the Silent group and they will help us as we promote this program.

AUCTION BEE’S: Worker Bees sought…our Spring Auction is only 50 days away and we have a few places we need some help. Can you drive? As donors are being contacted, we need a few volunteers to pick donations up and bring them back to the school. Do you know your ABC’s? We will also need help entering the donation information into our auction website for the Auction booklet. Do you know your numbers? As we get closer to the auction, we will need help grouping auction items for bidding. Finally, the week of the auction we will need help with set up, decorating, and clean up after the auction. If these are areas you can see yourself being a Helper Bee, please call or text Darleanna at 580-716-1057.

PRE-SCHOOL – Mrs. Herard: Hope everyone enjoyed the snow and extra day off. Thank you so very much for the Valentine gifts and lovely class parties! You are so sweet! Thanks also for the angel that left a baggie full of box tops! The LOL company will be here Th/Fri to take pictures with the children in the classroom. This is new for us, so we will see how it works out. Looking forward to the talent show Friday. Don't miss it! We will observe Ash Wednesday in chapel as well as the evening service which begins the season of Lent. There will be a meal served before each service. You are welcome to join us. This week our theme is "Quilts". We will learn about the shapes used in designing the tops, the warmth and beauty they provide, and the love put into every stitch. Our letter of the week is "Q". We are still working on rhyming words and will begin on patterns in math. God bless!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN - Mrs. Kelly: Thank you for the wonderful Valentines! Ms. Paula and Ms. Jess would like me to thank you also. Thank you to all of the parents that helped out with the party! Thank you Mrs. Covey and Mrs. Miller for taking care of my class Friday! PS and PK have a special picture day this week. Laugh out Loud Photography will be here on Thursday and Friday taking pictures of all of our PS and PK students. You can view the pictures between 2:30 AND 5:30, on those days. Our Bible words are, Jesus said, "Let the little children come to Me.” Matthew 19:14 We are learning the letter "L" and the number "16" this week. Have a blessed week!

KINDERGARTEN - Ms. Miller: Thank you so much parents for making our "Valentines' Party" so special! I hope everyone had a wonderful extra day off for "Presidents' Day"! We are working hard learning our numbers to 20. Have a great week!

FIRST GRADE – Mrs. Birnbaum: I pray that everyone had a great 3 day weekend and a Happy Valentine's Day! Thank you to all of the parents that helped with the class party. Our memory verse for Friday - Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. Psalm 118:1. Book orders are due on Friday. I hope to see all of you at the Talent Show on Friday. I know that some of you have been working hard for the show - I can't wait to see it! Have a great week!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Blessed Ash Wednesday greetings. At this somber time of the year, we pause to reflect on Christ's tremendous sacrifice on our behalf. What amazing love! Many thanks to our amazing parents for a wonderful Valentine's party. Thanks to Mrs. Harland for getting it together for us! We're looking forward to the talent show on Friday. Prepare to be wowed! Blessings. . .

THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: Wasn't the snow so pretty! I hope everyone got to enjoy their three day weekend. The kids were so quiet on Tuesday. This week: Math: Test was on Tuesday, and we will have another one next week. Multiplication facts will be due on Monday, February 23rd. Look for cards over 3s. Reading: We will be starting a new chapter book in class next week; questions may be coming home if they do not finish them in class. Spelling: Review words for next week (Feb 23-27) then Suki's Kimono. Talent show on Friday morning and in the evening; we have a few of our girls performing. Good luck ladies!

Page 3: Chatter 2 18 15

FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: All Valentine’s Day boxes were wonderful and had lots of hard work put into them by all. Congratulations to Haley for the Most Creative or Unusual, Sarah for the Most Traditional, and Bryant for the Funniest boxes in the Valentine’s day box decorating contest. Be looking for a note in the Friday Letter about Class Auction items this week. Don’t forget your permission slip as we go to help the church celebrate the 90th anniversary on Friday.

FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: It was wonderful to have Monday off! I know the children had a great weekend! How are country reports coming along? Remember...the handwritten rough draft is due Friday, March 6, and the typed final draft is due Friday, March 13. I hope everyone is working on them a little bit at a time. If you wait until the last minute it will be quite a stressful project. I would like to thank all that remembered me on my birthday and Valentine's Day. I felt very loved. There's nothing like celebrating with children. You can't help but feel special. Remember our field trip to the Wichita Ice Center is Friday. We will attend the talent show at 8:30, and leave about 9:45. We will return by day's end. Since it is a short week we do not have a regular reading or spelling test this week. Memory work due tomorrow is the 7th Commandment. Mark your calendars for April 24, which is our spring musical. Since the fifth graders do the acting I'd like 100% attendance from the class. Blessings on your week.

MIDDLE SCHOOL 2/24 5:00, Po-Hi Auditorium, Future Freshman Meeting for current 8th Graders

PO-HI 2015/2016 FRESHMAN PARENT MEETING: Future freshman parents will meet at 5:00 p.m. in the Po-Hi

Auditorium on February 24th. Ponca City High School administration and counselors will be presenting important information about pre-enrollment, courses, credits, graduation requirements, AP and Pre-AP classes, and student life at Po-Hi. STUCCO members will be giving tours of the high school following the Parent meeting. All parents in attendance will be eligible for door prizes for their Future Freshman. Teachers will be available in the Commons to answer questions about classes. Coaches will be available in the Commons to give information about sports, and teacher sponsors will be there to talk about clubs/activities.

Mrs. Harbeson: Brrr! What a change in the weather! I hope you're keeping warm; spring will be here soon. Keep your head up! The Topeka Tournament was so much fun! It was great watching all our athletes competing at their games and enjoying themselves at the hotel. Congrats to our boys' basketball team for wrapping up a very challenging season. You made us all proud, and I see great things for our team in the next few years. Our girls, of course, dominated the competition and brought home the first place trophy. We have so many talented students at FLS, and I thank God for each and every one of them! Speaking of talent, the annual talent show is being held this Friday. Check this issue of the Cardinal Chatter to see the time. Students, the next few weeks will fly by quickly, and the end of the quarter will be here before you know it. Please be checking your grades and assignments NOW so you won't have any surprises LATER! Blessings on the rest of your week!

Mrs. Hanson: 6th Grade is venturing into inquiry science! We are going to take this chapter from a different point of view. The students will have more freedom and be able to take control of their own learning. I am here to direct and encourage any exploration. We are studying Forces in Motion and will focus on the Laws of Motion. They will also have some individual projects soon.

7th Grade is working on their volcano projects that are due February 25. We will work on them in class, but work also needs to be done outside of class. The bibliography is due tomorrow and the intro paragraph is due this Friday. Fundraising orders are also due this Friday.

8th Grade has finished their chapter and will test tomorrow. We have already been reviewing and are more than ready. Cheerleaders are performing for the Talent Show this Friday during school and in the evening performance at 6:30.

Mr. Covert: Ash Wednesday is already upon us! We’re entering that season of the church year where we remember everything Christ has done for us, looking forward to Easter when we see the empty tomb and the fulfillment of all of God’s promises to creation! Blessings be upon us all as we enter into this period of remembrance of Christ!

Our classes continue to move along. In 8th grade, we’re looking at the forces that pushed our nation to the brink of splitting apart, and what ultimately caused the secession of the South. In 7th grade, we’re continuing to work through Europe, currently focusing on Germany and its neighbors to the south. 6th grade is starting in on a unit discussing the Early Middle Ages in Europe.

7th grade parents: I’ve been in touch with the travel agent for our DC trip. She is looking to start booking flights and hotel rooms, but we need a more solid number for her to work with than I have right now. If you could let me know

Page 4: Chatter 2 18 15

how many in your family plan to go, either through FastDirect or your student, I can get a solid number to her and we can start solidifying those plans as well. The dates we have set tentatively are Monday, September 21 through Saturday, September 26.

May God bless us all richly as we enter into the Lenten season! Mrs. Goll: God bless you as you begin this Lenten season. We took a little time in math to discuss “giving

something up” for Lent. It’s awe inspiring to reflect on what God gave up to be our Savior. In math we’ve been discussing percents & proportions; slope and intercepts; and exponents and exponential functions. Ask your student which of those is his class’s recent study. We’re looking forward to a field trip on Friday to learn about the early history of First Lutheran Church. How richly God has blessed First Lutheran for ninety years! To God be the Glory!
