A YEAR LONG PROJECT
Year 5 student Isabella (pictured below) with the
assistance of our School Librarian Mrs Drake,
has worked very hard and is super proud of her
role in producing a beautiful knitted blanket.
This blanket has been a year long project. It is
made up of 28 squares and has crochet around
the outside.
Once the crochet is complete, the blanket will be
donated to a local charity.
GRANDPARENTS DAY REMINDER
Grandparents of our students are invited to join stu-
dents and staff on Tuesday 23 October 2018, for
Grandparents Day. We would love as many grand-
parents to come along as possible to help us cele-
brate the special role grandparents play in our stu-
dents’ lives.
As part of the day, as well as joining in classroom
activities, some STEM activities that students take
part in will be on display in the School Library. Fami-
lies are welcome to visit this display during open
class time.

SCHOOL ANTHEM
Well done to Matt Zarb and our students and staff on
the creation of our Chatham Public School anthem.
We look forward to singing the song for the first time
as a school group at our upcoming Grandparents
Day event.
Students will be practicing the song in class, hence
I’m sure parents will be familiar with the song in no
time.
Sincere thanks to Mr Matt Zarb for once again creat-
ing a unique opportunity for our students. You can
hear the song performed by Mr Zarb on our facebook
page. We are very grateful for all that ACMF and Mr
Zarb do for our school.
COLOUR FUN RUN
Chatham Public School will be holding a Colour Fun
Run on Friday 2 November 2018. (Week 3, Term 4).
The Colour Run is a great opportunity for the school,
with our P&C, to raise funds for resources for our
students.
Notes with all the information required and sponsor-
ship forms went home with students last term.
Please ensure you look after your notes and espe-
cially your sponsorship forms as we only have limited
replacements in the office.
Pictured below are Tanisha, Liam and Octavia show-
ing the notes and forms for the Colour Run.

and; 2) the same strategies apply to larger num-
bers, fractions, decimals and algebra. Put down
your pencil and calculator and try applying the
Make 10 strategy to solve the following problems:
9 + 8: “9 plus 1 is 10 and 7 more is 17.”
19 + 8: “19 plus 1 is 20 and 7 more is 27.”
59 + 28: “59 plus 1 is 60 and 27 more is 87.”
299 + 28: “299 plus 1 is 300 and 27 more is 327.”
3998 + 326: “3998 plus 2 is 4000 and 324 more is
4324.”
3.99 + 0.18: “3.99 plus 0.01 is 4 and 0.17 more is
4.17.”
Great thinking! You can support this type of learn-
ing at home. Play math games with your child.
For example, play Make 10 Go Fish. Use a regu-
lar deck of cards with the face cards removed.
Rather than matching two of the same number,
match two numbers that add to 10. This game will
prepare your child to use the Make 10 strategy.
Talk to your child about what he or she is doing in
maths. Ask your child how he or she solved a
problem when working with numbers at school.
Focus on good thinking strategies, rather than
quick answers. Always let children know mistakes
are opportunities to learn. Lastly, try Number
Talks at home. It’s a great family activity when
riding in the car!

SUPPORTING YOUR CHILD’S MATHS
UNDERSTANDING AT HOME
- WITH NUMBER TALKS.
Is it still important for children to learn their multipli-
cation tables? Yes! However, the way students
learn these math facts may be different than the
way most adults learned. Rather than memorizing
math facts, the focus is on helping children develop
efficient, accurate and flexible thinking strategies.
Teachers at Chatham Public School use a routine
called Number Talks to help children become flex-
ible thinkers. A Number Talk takes five to 15
minutes. The teacher poses a computational prob-
lem and students determine the answer mentally.
Then the teacher records the strategies as stu-
dents share their thinking.
For example, a teacher may write 9 + 8 on the
board. Common student responses could include:
“I know 8 plus 8 is 16, so 9 plus 8 is one more or
17.” (Use doubles)
“I know 9 plus 9 is 18, so 9 plus 8 is one less or
17.” (Use doubles)
“Ten plus 8 is 18, but I only have 9, so I need to
subtract 1 to get 17.” (Use 10)
“If I add 1 to 9, I get 10. Then I have to add 7 more,
so the answer is 17.” (Make 10)
Number Talks help students build a tool box of
efficient thinking strategies over time. These strate-
gies are important because: 1) they provide a quick
way to determine an answer if a child forgets a fact

THE LIBRARY IS A HIVE OF ACTIVITY
Our School Library has a diverse range of activi-
ties available for our students to interact with.
From books and magazines (which can be read
in many different reading nooks), creating puppet
shows, computers and technology, drawing, ro-
botics, construction materials and more.
VIRTUAL REALITY
For this term, our school has on loan a Virtual
Reality Kit from Stemshare which is part of a
$23m state wide initiative through the Depart-
ment of Education.
Pictured below are Linkin and Reuben trying out
some of the equipment for the first time.

some tactical moves in their giant chess game.
READING NOOKS
The Library has many different reading nooks for
students to sit and enjoy their reading, whether it
be by themselves or in a group (as pictured be-
low).
STAGE 3 DIGITAL LICENCE
Did you know that 1 in 5 children reported being
cyber bullied in the past 12 months. As part of a
digital citizenship program at Chatham Public
School, stage 3 students will be working towards
their eSmart Digital Licence.
It is one of the most comprehensive online cyber
safety resources available. It teaches school
aged children critical digital skills and promotes
discussion about online safety between young
people and their parents, caregivers and teach-
ers.
Pictured below are students from class 5M com-
pleting quizzes to get their licence.
