479 The Ex Jimmy Chipperfield 1954 Rolls Royce Silver Wraith 4.5litre touring limousine, with coachwork by Freestone and Webb, registration number OLD 8, chassis number WVH110, engine numberW109H, black. The Silver Wraith was Rolls Royce’s first post WWIImodel. It employed a chassis similar to the previous Silver Dawn andBentley Mk VI, but having a ten feet seven inch wheel base, it was seveninches longer than the post WWII models. The chassis was alwaysintended for bespoke coachbuilt bodywork, and in that respect wasalways different to the Mk VIs pioneering standard steel bodywork.Always lavishly appointed, this example is no exception, with itsFreestone and Webb limousine with division coachwork, beautifullycrafted cream leather and highly polished woodwork, the rearpassenger compartment features picnic tables, a cocktail cabinet, clockand altimeter. The first owner was James (Jimmy) Chipperfield, of thefamous circus family. Copies of the original build sheets reveal thatchassis WVH110 was ordered by Hooper and Co in 1953 for delivery toa Mr A Webber. It would appear that Mr Webber never took delivery,as the chassis record cards record that Mr James Chipperfield was thefirst owner on 13th August 1954. The chassis cards also reveal thatWVH110 was to have an old body on new chassis, the body in questionbeing transferred from WLE27. Further special features listed includeautomatic transmission and new stepped pattern petrol tank. Jimmyretained the Rolls Royce until 1958. WVH110 then passed through thedealerships of Harold Radford Ltd, Hoffmans of Sheffield and AlpolanIndustries Ltd, before the next private owner, a Mr Basil Victor Martin,of Bedford Square, London, acquired her on 15th May 1962 (HR Owenbill of sale on file) OLD 8 would remain in the Martin family until 2011.In the current vendor’s ownership since 2011, she has gone through aperiod of re-commissioning to bring her up to a good roadworthycondition, and the vendor informs us that she drives exceptionally well. The history file contains the original RF60 log book, copies of thechassis cards, past MOTs, tax discs, copies of the completed carreports, owner’s handbook, service book and an HR Owen bill of sale.A rare Rolls Royce, with fascinating and continuous history whichdeserves to be cherished by the next custodian. This large and impressive Charabancis just the thing to take all your friends to the local hostelry! Believedto have been manufactured in 1918, the chassis number wouldsuggest that the vehicle left the production line in 1920, but somemilitary models were re-commissioned by the factory for civilian useafter The Great War. It is possible that this is such a vehicle, and furtherresearch is suggested to verify this. Having been purchased in Franceby Mr J Mathieson, of Kircaldy, Fife, for FF32,000 in 1982 (receipt onfile), it returned to these shores and was subsequently restored(photos on file). It then passed to a restaurateur, who used it as acourtesy bus for patrons, and from there to a consortium of friendswho used the Charabanc on jolly outings to public houses in theCheshire area. Improvements during their ownership included thefitting of a new canvas hood, clutch and new engine big ends.Finished in green, with seating for ten, on delightful slatted seats, shecomes equipped with electric lighting, oil side lamps, a luggagecarrier, running board mounted two gallon petrol cans, a wickerbaguette basket and side screens.
