• BehaviourAs a result of the high-quality care and support that the children receive from our well-trained staff, consistently following our policy, behaviour of pupils is very good. As children go through puberty, managing their behaviour can become particularly difficult and we want to help you through this process. If you ever have concerns about changes in the behaviour that your child is exhibiting, then contact Yvonne Westwood, our Special Needs coordinator. We can arrange to meet and review plans and support. Yvonne’s email is [email protected]

• Governors’ progressGovernors have been challenging school performance and reviewing performance management systems in the school. You can read more about this in the newsletter. They have also looked at the poor punctuality that was an issue earlier this year and have taken the local authority to task over the management of their contract with the transport providers. More Greenwich buses are now on time, which makes a more prompt start to the school day. Thank you for feedback in the transport survey. The summary is here:

Our next survey is a request from pupils about school lunches. Visit our new website or request a paper copy to take part. We have a duty to educate children about healthy eating and have included many in this survey from staff and doctors to the catering company. Let us know about your children’s preferences and the improvements that they would like to see. And if you send your children with packed lunches, we still want to hear from you.

G16 have had another very successful term. We welcomed Romixshan to our class mid-way through the term. He has settled in really well and the other students in G16 have been very supportive of him.

We have been on trips to:

* The Emirates Air Line cable car.

* The cinema.

* Woolwich every Friday to have a drink at the café.

* We have also been carol singing at Woodlarks.

All students are doing really well in their swimming lessons as well.

For our assembly this term we focused on the theme of bullying. Students thought about how

people who are bullied might feel and made some sad, angry, scared and surprised faces to show this. They also did some role play of how a bully may act.

In the assembly they performed a role play about someone who was being bullied, and sang a song.

All students worked very hard and our assembly was a great success.

Well done G16!

Our love of reading is unwavering with most of us dressing up to celebrate the schools book week. We had Inspector Gadget, Tin Man from Wizard of Oz, Meg and Mog (witch and cat) and Bumblebee the Transformer to name a few.

We are looking forward to the Christmas Grotto at Woodlarks towards the end of term, and our trip to Eltham High Street to represent the school choir. Class singing and music participation is a favourite of ours during the week, so we are more than happy to sing our hearts out on this special day.

We showed our love of singing, dance and performance by joining in with the fun during the school’s

Children in Need celebration, not to mention buying the delicious cakes to munch.

In maths our knowledge of 3D shapes is steadily improving. We are more aware of 3D shapes in our classroom and around the school.

Our PE focus on archery has proven to be a hit. Each week our aim improves and we are more supportive of our classmates’ efforts with the bow and arrow. Maggie, our teacher, has imparted her top- notch skills and we listen and focus every time to have a better chance to hit the target or pop a balloon! She is very proud of how far we have come with our archery skills.

Successful term with G5 What a successful and learning-filled autumn term G5 has had! This half-term has seen us busy studying poetry and our poetic skills are getting better every week.

We had Inspector Gadget, Tin Man from Wizard of Oz, Meg and Mog and Bumblebee the Transformer.Autumn term swimmers

G15 have enjoyed lessons related to Movement and Social objectives.

This half term they have been able to explore the Emirates Air Line cable car, which was fantastic, and the V&A Children’s Museum. G15 are working on their awareness of the community

and different environments. During the lesson at the V&A museum, they particularly enjoyed dressing up in character costume, to help develop their self-awareness skills.

G15 - Me, myself and you

They enjoyed dressing up in character costume,

to help develop their self-awareness skills.

I would like to start by thanking all members of the School Council team for their support and enthusiasm. I am confident that this is going to be a year where we have a strong School Council, with a strong student voice. I am also confident that we will be successful in working to achieve improvements in many aspects of the school for both students and staff.

WelfareWe now have two teams, one for Buildings and one for Welfare. The Welfare team have started a project for recycling and reducing the amount of energy we use at school. The team shall soon be asking the entire school community how we can improve recycling within the Academy. Harry, from G3, is currently

working on a questionnaire about recycling to go on the School Council Fronter page.

Buildings teamThe Buildings team shall be looking at moving forward with getting some protection from sun and rain in the school playground area. Last year’s School Council members moved a long way on this project. This year we plan to

complete this scheme so that the shelters are in place by spring/summer 2013. We are currently establishing a link with the Academy’s buildings management team so that we can report any class concerns about any aspect of the building.

Both School Council teams shall be responding to questions raised by classes from around the school.

L to R: Two members from the Buildings team with Phil from premises, discussing what needs repairing around the school. Harry is going through his questionnaire about recycling in the school with Nick.

G1 - Continuing to work hardThis half-term has seen a continuation of hard work and improved behaviour from everyone in G1. We have been working hard on poetry in English and shapes in maths. On 21 November, it was Character Day and we got to dress up as our favourite book characters. We had lots of pictures taken by three different newspapers. What celebrities!

On 27 November, we went to Woodside School in Bexley to take part in a Boccia event against three other schools.

We were all extremely well-behaved, and although we hadn’t played this game before, we managed to come in second place. Go team G1!

A group of Charlton Park Academy students performed a selection of scenes from the Shakespeare play The Taming of the Shrew at Greenwich Theatre, as part of the Shakespeare Schools Festival.

This event included some wonderful acting and some absolutely fantastic music. The students worked so well together and performed to rapturous applause. It was a stunning performance which got the whole audience reciting verses of

Shakespeare together – there were lots of laughs too.

Well done to all the students who participated, and thank you to all the staff and parents who supported the event.

It was a stunning performance which got the whole audience reciting verses of Shakespeare together.

The first meeting of Team Green was a great success, and we have made the decision to put ONlY PAPeR in the see-through recycling sacks for now. • Recycling Bin Watch is happening again, so please make sure

nothing untoward is in your bin, e.g. food waste, latex gloves etc.

G18 - Working hardWarsame, Jasdeep, Fahim and Charlie have been working very hard this half term with many different activities in their lessons. They have also been enjoying fun times out as a new class, with trips to the River Thames and two farms. Every Tuesday in maths they spend money at Charlton House, Charlton Park Cafe and Oxleas Wood Cafe, which they love.

Warsame has started asking for the toilet by signing. Well Done Warsame.

Charlie is about to start horse riding and we as a class look forward to seeing how he gets on with this. Good luck Charlie.

Fahim and Jasdeep have been doing great work in class and in the community, by walking calmly and without the use of their belts. Great work Jasdeep and Fahim.

• This month has also seen a few birthdays in G18 and for our friends around us. We had a great time with our friends from G5, G11 and G16 at Jasdeep’s, Jamie’s, Simon’s and Aaron’s (G5) parties.

Happy Birthday everyone.

L to R - Jasdeep walking in Charlton park and Warsame after helping to make a mask in English.

L to R - Fahim having fun during a trip to Woolwich and Charlie taking part and helping make a fruit salad.

Lastly, G18 are looking forward to their Christmas trip to the 02 for food and going on the cable cars with G5.

G6 News UpdateThis term G6 have became valuable members of the school community. Behaviour in the class has improved and this has contributed to the learning progress that has been identified.

This term we have begun to take the class group out into the community. Firstly, we visited a local cafe and then used the gym in the park. Once students became aware of how to behave outside in the community, we then took them to Oxley’s Wood on the school minibus. While at the woods the students were able to use the gym and went for a long walk through the woods.

In art this term the students have been taught how to use mono-prints. This is something that all the class was very good at using. As part of our fundraising, the class will be creating and producing Christmas cards using mono-prints.

As a class team we would like to thank the students for all the work that they have produced. We would also like to thank the parents for their continued support.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Out and about in the community

Physical Education Update

Regatta Centre

POST 16Rock climbingAs a part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Programme in the sixth form, a group of students have been going to the Mile End climbing wall in the east end of London. George is now climbing designated colour routes and is able to complete some of the simpler climbs with one hand behind his back. Recently, Mathew successfully completed all the seven 20 – 30 metres climbs in the top rope hall, including tying in and untying in less than half an hour. Dan enjoys the experience, texture of the rock and chalk, and even got both feet off the ground on one occasion. It is good to see the encouragement that the students give each other on the climbs particularly Tia and Tabatha who work well together. Then of course there are Seun and PJ cracking jokes as they get further up the wall (or are they driving us up the wall?)

Rowing at the LondonRegatta CentreA group of Post 16 students have been going to the London Regatta Centre. They use conventional rowing machines, where they compete against each other to see who can row the most number of metres adding on their score each week to make a cumulative score. (We’ll see on the last visit of term who has rowed the furthest.) The Centre also has a huge tank with a fixed boat where the students have been learning how to row on water. This is much more difficult than a rowing machine and requires more strength, co-ordination and rhythm.

PMLD – Mechanical MusicThis term PE and Music have teamed up to create a project based on the topic of ‘movement’. The aim of these sessions is to empower students with PMLD to make choices, participate in activities with others and work together as a team towards a common goal. Through the combined teaching of music and PE students will explore the topic of mechanical music. Using music and movement, students will participate in creative activities that will be student-led and they will be able to show commitment and motivation to improve by combining individual skills to create a group performance.

KeY STAGe 3The students in KS3 have been enjoying a range of different activities such as dance, swimming, canoeing, archery, invasion games, fitness and gymnastics.

Each student has four sessions of PE per week and will have the opportunity to try out a range of activities across the school year. With the focus of our new curriculum this term on creative and social we have been encouraging students to persevere with skill development to try combining a range of skills together in practice situations with peers.

KeY STAGe 4This term in KS4 Physical Education students have been looking at new activities that are challenging them in new ways.

Currently students are doing gymnastics, health and fitness, dance, swimming, rock climbing, FUNS activity work cards (these aim to improve areas of fitness such as agility, core strength, co-ordination and balance). The students are really enjoying the challenges in these topics and are learning to take on roles other than the performer. This is helping students evaluate their own and others’ performances.

Afterschool and Lunchtime Clubs

The afterschool clubs have started up again and are proving as popular as ever! Boys’ and girls’ football has started where they left off last year with a very enthusiastic and talented team.

Athletics club has managed to recruit a couple of very promising athletes to add to the same group who competed at the London Youth Games. We are also offering multi sports which include:

• new age kurling• boccia • polybat. For more information please ask any of the PE staff.

The lunchtime clubs are going strong and are running every day in the sports hall and playground. The sports offered include:

• tennis • boccia • running club • cycling.

Creative G12G12 have had a really successful half-term. We have been looking at Festivals of light and the students have enjoyed writing poems about bonfire night, recreating the story of Rama and Sita for Diwali and running a Christmas card business.

We have also been looking at stories and the students have been dressing up as different characters each week to create their own. They have been really enjoying our weekly version of A Christmas Carol, pressing switches to activate sounds and exploring different objects.

Individual achievementsThe students have also had some amazing individual achievements. Brett has been taking big steps to kick a ball in his standing sling. Jake has improved his head control and is able to move around the classroom in his standing sling. Mitchell has made great progress in using words and holding writing implements. William has become much more independent and can turn on a tap and wash his hands independently. Elvin is using his hands much more to access activities and James has become a student librarian.

We are very proud of our students and hope they carry on working as hard next term!

The MFL department, in coordination with G21, celebrated a historic Mexican tradition: ‘Día de los Muertos’. This is a celebration of the lives of loved ones who are no longer around.

Mexican and Latin-American people prepare altars, food, and decoration to honour their relatives and the things they liked.

With the support of staff G21 students hosted the venue and arranged games, music, decoration, food and presents for

some MFL students who enjoyed a magnificent day.

We all had fun decorating sugar skulls and taking part in the games. It was a wonderful opportunity to interact and socialise while we learned about other cultures.

G9 - Getting ready for ChristmasIt is hard to believe the Autumn term is already coming to an end. As we head towards the Christmas break we have been learning about different celebrations and festivals that are held during the months of November and December.

As part of the ‘Festival of lights’ topic in Humanities we have participated in activities for Bonfire Night, Diwali, Advent, Hanukkah and Christmas. There have been some fantastic opportunities for exploring these festivals across the curriculum and the students have been enthusiastic participants throughout!

We made a great start to the Autumn term with lots of fun activities both within Charlton Park Academy and outside in the community. We have been busy and enjoying lots of different lessons and experiences, such as dance, art, music, Sherborne*, English, ICT, maths and science, to name a few!

We go out every Wednesday to explore the local area and learn about our community and have started thinking about our options for work experience. We are now looking forward to our class Christmas mystery trip.

G17 would like to wish all the readers of this newsletter a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

G17 - Getting ready for their Christmas Mystery Trip

G7 and their new arrivalsCharlton Park Academy welcomed the arrival of our new G7 students. We have had an exciting and fun term, learning lots of new subjects and making new friends. This term G7 has been on some fun educational trips.

Mudchute FarmIn Humanities, we learned about where food comes from, and we took the bus to Mudchute Farm to see some farm animals.

Book Character DayIn November, we dressed up a lot. First was on Book Character Day, when we became our favourite book characters. We also had the opportunity to join Greenwich

Library, as two members of staff came down to enrol us.

Children in Need The second time we dressed up was for Children in Need. We dressed up in spots and raised £25 with our game ‘Pin the Eyepatch on Pudsey’.

This term’s highlightsThis term in art we are learning about portraits, so we went to the

National Portrait Gallery, did some sightseeing and had our picture taken at Trafalgar Square.

SwimmingIn G7, we love swimming and have all made huge progress. Most of us can swim a length of the pool independently.

G14 are all enjoying their hydro sessions this term and are progressing well. They have been trying to walk in the water as well as move on their front and back by kicking their legs and moving their arms. The students also enjoy trying to splash the staff and will often use their voices to ‘call’ the staff to the side of the pool in order to do this!

G3 - the class that blogThis term the students in G3 have been writing a blog about all the different activities and trips we have enjoyed.

We have been to Woodlarks Camp, Mudchute Farm and the Mulberry Tea rooms to see a photography exhibition by Michelle Dishart. We also went to the Excel centre to take part in an exhibition of table cricket and saw all the different products on show at the exhibition.

Here are some examples of the students’ blog.

FE6 went on a trip to Canary Wharf by bus and the DLR. It was raining all day, but we still had a fantastic time. There were some very tall buildings, and we saw an ice rink. Our next trip is to Westfield shopping centre.

FE4 Autumn term 2012 This term FE4 have gained Work experience as part of their Citizenship. This included the students raising £130 by selling wrapping paper, baubles and Christmas cards to help create funds for the Riding for the Disabled based at Charlton Park.

Young apprentices• Money has been raised for Rowland’s School Band by selling their

CDs on the tuck shop at lunch time.

• The Academy’s Veggie Project has also benefitted from FE4’s entrepreneurial skills as the students have generated a steady stream of business selling the Academy’s vegetables to staff and visitors. All the proceeds are being reinvested into buying more seeds.

• The students have also kept themselves busy by helping premises around the Academy, lending a hand with the maintenance of the grounds, sweeping up leaves, and generally keeping the Post-16 area clean and tidy.

• Finally, FE4 managed to raise £25 for Children in Need by making some scrummy cupcakes, which sold out within the hour! This would not be possible if we did not have our colleagues’ support so a massive thank you to all.

FE1 and their ASDAN accreditation

* In the communityOver the last term FE1 students have made good progress with their ASDAN accreditation. They have chosen their trips out and have arranged the transport, with support for accreditation in their Out in the Community unit. The students chose to go to Westfield Shopping Centre and made a list of items they wanted to buy. They independently made decisions about colour and size.

* ASDAN Money The students have been experiencing money and how to use it in the community by buying themselves drinks and clothes. In class we have also worked on recognising and counting money.

* ASDAN Workright Paige enjoys her work experience at the Red Bus Nursery and has helped organise and plan several activities for the toddlers who attend. We are very proud of the work that Paige has completed at the nursery, and as part of her work experience Paige has also completed a Workright unit qualification.

FE1 heading to Westfield

Last Friday was a very special day for me as it was the day I visited Escuela Federico Leloir in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the school we have connected with through the British Council. After I had shown them all the posters and poems our students had sent, I joined one of their workshops before meeting the staff to plan our future projects.

The school sent Charlton Park Academy a beautifully made tea set as a sign of friendship. When it was time to take the photo the students told me it had to be a ‘thumbs up’ photo to show just how fantastic our Greenwich-Buenos Aires connection was going to be.

New staff membersWe would like to welcome two new staff members to the ICT team. It’s fantastic to have Ali (level 4 LSA) supporting the curriculum. He has been kept quite busy with the introduction of iPads and iMacs across the school, supporting ICT classes and the radio team.

We are equally pleased to welcome Tracey who is our new communications and digital media officer. Tracey has already had a huge impact on our communications, quality of publications and external relationships.

AccreditationsWe would also like to inform you of some changes to the accreditations pathways we are using in ICT. We continue to use AQA unit awards but have now added the OCR entry level certificate in ICT; for those able the Functional Skills in ICT and for some, Cambridge Nationals level 1/2.

If you would like any more information on these please ask or you can visit the website www.ocr.org.uk

E-learningOver the term our KS3 students have been learning all about electronic communications with:

• Emailing

• Skype calling

• Blogging and using Twitter.

Our KS4 students have been working on desktop publishing and towards their accreditation. We would like to share some great work the students in G16 have been doing. The students decided, as they use the gym every morning, that they would like to create their own CD mix

and design the cover. The students used a combination of cameras, iPads and editing software to come up with these fantastic images and finished cases.

ICT - Autumn Term updateWe are pleased to say we have our radio station up and running again with different students from across the school using it each morning. We look forward to hearing their combined broadcast, out in time for Christmas.

Communication teamWe would like to welcome a new staff member to our communication team. Petrece is a newly-qualified speech therapist, and is working to help implement some of our communication development projects and priorities. It is wonderful to have Petrece join the team.

We would also like to warmly welcome two new speech therapists to the SALT team: Beverley and Kerry.

Finally, congratulations to our speech therapist Alice who gave birth to a baby girl called Emily in late November.

Person-centred planningAfter a term of developing some of the skills in ‘thinking about ourselves’ and ‘ways to express our thoughts and needs’ we are now commencing our plans to introduce the secure wiki*.

To keep you informed, we have organised Person-centred planning information sessions: Tuesday 15th January - 9.30am, 4.15pm and 5.30pm.

Further information about wiki will be sent home.*Wiki is a piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit web pages

Next term KS3 After Christmas we will be using multimedia tools, and KS4 will be looking at how we might use spreadsheets. Parents will be invited to work with us on creating wikis linked with our Person-centred planning sessions.

The new school websiteWe have had some delays in launching our new website, but it is now live and we are in the process of updating it. We are keen for feedback, so we will be holding a website competition to give people an opportunity to explore and evaluate the site.
