From the Principal

Hello friends.

Welcome to the second of our fortnightly Newsletters. We have had some positive feedback about the new format. It is less restrictive and has more information for you to peruse and lots of interesting hyperlinks.

“Children grow into the intellectual life around them”

At Charlton, one of our aims is to help Children to think. Vygotsky (1978), found from his research that “children grow into the intellectual life around them” and he also observes that cognitive growth is “more likely when one is required to explain, elaborate, or defend one’s position to others as well as to oneself; striving for an explanation, often makes a learner integrate and elaborate knowledge in new ways.”

This might seem like a lot of big words, but if you are desirous of having children who are academi-cally successful at school and generally successful in life, it is very important for you to be aware of how to create that openness to new ideas and discussion which creates intellectual stimulus and openness to BIG ideas.

“How do we do that?” I hear you ask. Well here are some ideas.

1. Spend time with your children away from elec-tronic media. Begin having dinner together with the TV off and all of the i-Equipment out of sight and hearing. You cannot build intellectual stimu-lus without thinking, and distractions almost completely void the capacity to think.

2. Have discussions with your children about school, about local politics, about federal politics, about religion and beliefs, about values. We are finding that many of our Charlton children have little or no idea about what is happening in the world beyond their suburb.

3. Develop a growth mindset in your child by focusing your praise on process, learning, and effort (You really worked hard on this and have learned a lot. You did a great job of developing a plan and following it through. You’ve really de-veloped as a musician.), as opposed to ability (You’re so clever. Look how smart you are; you did that so fast. You’re good at math. You’ve got a lot of talent.) Or with younger children, not “You’re such a good boy” but, “I really appreciate your good manners”.

4. Challenge but Don’t Rescue. We learn a lot from making mistakes, pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone, and taking risks to try new things. Regularly encountering challenges, mistakes, and failure builds a growth mindset and develops intellectual resilience. When your child encounters difficulties, don’t jump in to solve the problem and rescue him/her. Instead, ask questions that will help him/her to think through the problem, identify, and choose a course of action for moving forward. Mrs Snellgrove used to say to her Kindies, “It’s OK to make mistakes, that’s how we learn!”

5. What Questions Did You Ask Today? Our questions drive us as learners. Instead of asking your child after school: ‘So? Did you learn anything today?’ Instead ask the question ‘Did you ask a good question today?’ Asking good questions at home or at school develops an enquiring mind which is the foundation for intellectual pursuits.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Verse for the Week: John 3:16-17

FROM THE CHAPLAINAs we continue the cornerstone of love this term we look at one of the most well-known verses in the Bible. It comes from the gospel of John where Jesus sums up why he has come to earth. Because of God’s love; his unfathomable, immeasurable, incomprehensible love for the world, his world. Jesus came to live a life that no one could live and pay a price that no one could pay so that anyone who puts their trust in him would have eternal life. These simple words convey so much. The power of God’s love towards the human race is simply too good to leave us wondering. He said it with action so there could be no doubt. It is the reason why Charlton exists and this year we hope that more and more families will come to know the profound love of God and can read the above words of Jesus knowing with as-surance that eternal life is theirs.

6. Support Your Child in Arguing Effectively and Persuasively. A recent study in the journal Child Development (J. Allen, 2012) showed that teenag-ers who argued constructively with their parents by building a case and providing evidence for their position were more able to resist peer pressure to use drugs than were students from more authoritar-ian households. Researchers found such arguments were training grounds for teens that enabled them to learn to speak up, voice an opinion, and use evi-dence. This training begins before the teen years but culminates in a capable, thinking adult.

7. What Makes You Say That? This simple question is the “killer app” for parents and teachers. By simply asking, “What makes you say that?” in a curious and nonjudgmental tone after someone has given a re-sponse, we are able to get a window into the think-ing behind that person’s initial response. Teachers in Sweden referred to this as the magic question, be-cause of how much it was able to reveal about stu-dents’ thinking. The reasoning behind the response often tells us much more than the response itself.

8. Lastly, Make Your Own Thinking Visible. If the Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky’s research is true and, “Children grow into the intellectual life around them.” Then you are a model for your child of what it means to be a thinker and a learner. Model your own interests, passions, curiosity, reflections, learning, and thinking for your child. Make your own thinking visible to them as a model. If you are not much of a thinker, then for your child’s sake, make a start.

Have fun thinking and helping your children to think. More to come on this important topic.

YEAR 9 CAMPThe Year 9’s travelled to Southern Cross camp site last Monday where they enjoyed many outdoor activi-ties together. Students enjoyed soaring on the flying fox, balancing on the high ropes, swimming in the dam and shooting a bullseye in archery.

The night sessions were a special opportunity for the Year 9’s to hang out with the Student Leadership team and hear School Captain, Tom Roberts’ testimony. We hope that the friendships made and journeys started with God continue to grow as the students move through Senior School.

If your child can competently play an instrument, please contact Mr Newsome at the College on 4959 9111 or email [email protected].

Year 6 student Brock Paterson-Pillidge was selected for a commercial that will be aired during the 2015 rugby league season.

The commercial is a Community Service Announcement for the John Hunter Children’s Hospital and also features players from the Newcastle Knights.

When asked about his role in the commercial and his thoughts on his new found fame, Brock said “I am looking forward to meeting some of the Newcastle Knights players. I will even get my own jersey to wear as part of the commercial and I have to go on one of their shoulders and also score a try!”

Congratulations Brock on being selected. We are very excited for you!

YEAR 7 History EXCURSIONYear 7 undertook at trip to Yamuloong Aboriginal Centre this week in support of their History course We enjoyed the experience of learning about our native foods they ate, traditional aboriginal painting, artefacts and how they lived in the local area.

“It was really fun to go on the bush walk and learn about the plants and how they used it. I tried the berry that looked like a white egg it tasted sweet” (Rose).

“I enjoyed learning about the plants. I ate a midgen berry. It tasted hard and sour”(Merrin).

“I enjoyed the weapons they used; the small shield and dagger. It was cool” (Jamie).

“The instrument they used to attract the emus for hunting was very smart” (Connor).

“I liked the dot paintings because of how they communicated through stories using symbols” (Ryan).

Statistics prove that students who read at least 20 minutes a day improve their academic results significantly.

Last Friday 13th February Charlton Library staff handed out chocolate treats to our Senior School students who took the time to visit the Library and borrow a book. With technology such a dominant part of teenagers lives today, the Library sought a fun way to encourage our Senior School students to access the College Library more.

The Library was decorated with hearts, balloons and words associated with books and reading. Our Library Lovers’ Day was a fun way to celebrate the joy that reading can be and to encourage our older students to use and appreciate the library resources available to them.

Does Your Child Read?

Consider the image below. It explains why our Junior School teachers are so passionate about your children reading each day.

Did you know that some of our Junior and Middle School classrooms now have standing desks?

Some children need movement in order to learn, rather than sitting quietly at their desks. For children who squirm or wiggle, standing

Physical INNOVATION in the CLASSROOM

desks provide opportunity for physical activity that does not disturb other students.

Did you know you burn three times as many calories standing than sitting? Standing is great for spine health as well.

The new standing desks, which have whiteboard tops, allow for students, in group work, to stand around both sides of the table and have a brainstorming surface, with no organisation required. Writable surfaces help remove the fear of failure as students are more willing to have a go. The writable surfaces foster kinetic learning.

Free Tennis daySunday 1st March @ Bolton PointBolton Point Tennis Club will have a free fun Tennis Day on Sunday 1st

March for anyone of any age or ability. A professional coach will be in

attendance giving pointers. You don’t need a tennis racquet, as these

can be supplied. However, tennis shoes or joggers without ripple soles

will be needed. There will also be some free tennis giveaways!

Please phone Barbara on 4959 1160 for a time slot or more information. Limited number of times available.

Emily competed against three wonderful leaders from Toronto High School and a fine school leader from Lake Macquarie High School. Well done to Gemma Driscoll from Toronto who will represent the Lioness Club in the Zone.

Members of the Lions Club will come to Charlton to present the trophies and a perpetual trophy to Emily and the College next month. Emily was a credit to her family and our College. We are all so very proud of her! Emily commences her Architecture Degree at Newcastle University next week.

The First Class Art Exhibit opened on Sunday 8th February at the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. This prestigious event celebrates and showcases the artistic achievements of H.S.C. students work

from the Hunter and Central Coast regions. This year there were 125 submissions of a very high standard from over 30 schools. The artworks selected for First Class 14 explored identity with ‘curios-

ity’ and ‘courage’. Many students looked for a sense of self in the principle landscape, aspects of their everyday world or subjects of national and global significance. Some young artists explored

self-image, through topical issues such as feminism, sexuality, politics and cultural identity. Charlton’s senior art teacher Donna McLean was in attendance and very proud to congratulate her

students Kendal Knight and Rebekah Morgan-Jones, who were both awarded a Certificate of Excellence and Achievement with their respective art exhibits. “It’s very exciting for the school and the

girls to be chosen from so many outstanding entries for this annual event. Everyone should take time to view the fantastic work of both girls and other students from the region,” Mrs McLean said.

Kendal is now following a career in Event Marketing while Rebekah has commenced University studying for an Arts Degree in Film and Media. Congratulations to all involved. The First Class Art

Exhibit will remain open until the end of February.

Below: Courtney’s work will be displayed from Friday 20th to

Sunday 22nd February at the Maitland Showground.
