We have done extensive research to create this unique resource for local parents. Our basic guideline for inclusion is, “Does this business or organization do some-thing special for families with kids?” Although we’ve made every effort to make our Ultimate Go-To-Guide as comprehensive and accurate as possible, we encour-age you to contact us online if you find a business missing and let us know. We’re always on the lookout for good information to share!
and
We are excited to celebrate our 15th year of CharlottesvilleFamily,
an adventure that started when Robin, a soon-to-be first-time
mom, imagined a way to collect and share the many wonderful
resources and experiences she was finding in the Charlottesville
community. She envisioned a hub to
connect us all.
With that vision, she created
the AlbemarleKids.com website
and within a year was joined
by Jen as co-publisher and the
rest as they say is history. We are
still loving every minute of it all, and our
families continue to grow. We have children spanning ages 4
to 15 and five publications in addition to CharlottesvilleFamily
— the CharlottesvilleFamily Ultimate Go-To Guide (in your hands),
the Charlottesville Welcome Book, the Charlottesville Welcome Book
Wedding Directory, Locally Charlottesville and the recently acquired
the Healthy Living Guide.
We truly enjoy coming up with great ideas for our readers
and our advertisers as well as new ways to contribute to the
Charlottesville community. Our goal is to be a parent’s ultimate
resource, whether you are looking for great activities, parenting
tips, local school news, daytrip ideas or guides to local family
services. We do the research, leaving more time for you to enjoy
the important stuff — like fishing and finger painting!
At CharlottesvilleFamily, we are dedicated to “making parenting
easier and growing up fun,” and it is our pleasure to serve you.

At the Charlottesville Waldorf School knowledge doesn't come from an SOL mandate. It begins by nurturing a child's desire to learn. Beginning in our Preschool, through Elementary and Middle School, CWS students are en-couraged to ask “Why?” not just “Who?”, “When?”, and “Where?”
Art used with permission—from a 1st Grade CWS student’s main lesson notebook.
Isn’t that the kind of educa-tion you want for your child?

Going Local First things first. Charlottesville itself is packed with activities for children — from parks and playgrounds to special seasonal attractions and fun-filled festivals. Families can enjoy a hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains one day, and a world-class theaterical performance or national music act the next. Check out these juicy tidbits about Charlottesville, plus a guide to our city’s tried-and-true spots for family fun! (Look for tips and readers’ favorites!) We know you'll find something interesting and fun to do with the kids whether you're new to town or are a seasoned local. Enjoy!
Charlottesville Fun
Go Hoos! For those of you who are new to town, here's the scoop on the most popular man in town, Thomas Jefferson. He is often fondly called “TJ,” and his university is our area's biggest employer. It's also a great draw for sports fans, who turn out in droves to cheer on the UVA Cavaliers, also known as the “Wahoos” or “Hoos” for short. Going to UVA games is a great source of entertainment
for local families. Many of the teams embrace the kids with occasional budget-friendly packages that include a hotdog and drink with a kid's ticket, the Cavman’s Crew with UVA gear, festivals to meet the players and other fun ways for families to enjoy the UVA team spirit. What's a Wahoo?
Small City, Big AttractionOne reason Charlottesville has so many transplanted residents is that it’s a small city with all the trappings of a big one. In addition to CharlottesvilleFamily, check out our sister publications: The Charlottesville Welcome Book for details on local attractions and events; Locally Charlottesville, which offers a must-have resource for shopping with local businesses; The Charlottesville Welcome Book Wedding Directory, a guide to the area’s best resources for destination wedding celebrations with local style; and The Healthy Living Directory, which promotes Charlottesville’s natural health community.

Legend has it that Washington & Lee baseball fans dubbed UVA players “Wahoos” during the fierce rivalry between the two schools in the 1890s. By 1940, the term “Wahoos” was in general use around campus — or “The Grounds,” as alums say.
The big domed building with TJ’s statue out front is called The Rotunda, and it faces a huge grass courtyard known as The Lawn, surrounded by historic residences (Edgar Allan Poe is among the most famous residents) that students and faculty now occupy. The Lawn is packed with children trick-or-treating every Halloween and UVA students graduating every spring. And, the families can enjoy a bit of history with a student-led tour of the Rotunda year-round — a fun and easy way to get out and enjoy the day.

Green SpaceWhether you want to go for an autumn hike or cool off in summer, you can certainly find a park in our town or our beautiful surrounding county that fits the bill. Try Chris Greene Lake, near the airport, for swimming or fishing. The Ivy Creek Natural Area is a great place to go for an afternoon jaunt with or without the stroller. Did you
know that it's also an official site on the Virginia African American
Heritage Trail? To temporarily escape from civilization, hike the Rivanna Trails. You can also fish on the Rivanna River or let your dog take a swim. For an easy and gorgeous walk, take the Saunders-Monticello Trail. Hikers enjoy lovely views as this wide trail winds its way along Carter Mountain towards Monticello.
Among neighborhood parks, we love Greenleaf downtown for its picnic area, toddler-friendly playground and a summer sprayground full of sprinklers. And, when it comes to watery warm-weather fun, check out the Onesty Aquatic Center on Meade Avenue, with tons of fun, kid-friendly features, and the big sprayground at Forest Hills Park.

Sporty FunThere’s never a dull moment for sports fanatics in Charlottesville, whether you want to teach your child the basics of golf or introduce them to the challenge of rock climbing. Play a round of golf at Meadowcreek Golf Course in Pen Park off Rio Road, also home to a super playground, exercise stations and a nature trail.
Main Street Arena can be an ice park one day, and a Mixed Martial Arts arena the next! The arena offers both winter sports (figure skating, hockey and curling) as well as summer sports (soccer, lacrosse, inline hockey and ultimate Frisbee). For an extreme birthday party for kids 6 and older, book the Rocky Top Gym, which provides 2,500 square feet of climbing! If climbing isn’t your thing, the gym also features racquetball, wallyball, aerobics, weights and a pro shop.

Rainy Day ActivitiesSet the kids loose at Bounce-n-Play for active recreation on a rainy day. While kids zoom down slides and romp in the ball pit, parents can take advantage of the free Wi-Fi. Bowling at AMF Kegler's Lanes is
another great choice when the weather keeps you inside.
Optional bumpers are perfect for beginners and teens will love the arcade room.
If you’re itching to do something creative, head over to The Glass Palette. Dinnertime will be 10 times more exciting for your little one if they can eat off a dinner plate they made themselves. Lazy Daisy Ceramics & The Pottery Paintin’ Place is also a great stop where anyone, from tiny tots to adults, can create a pottery
masterpiece. Explorations Play Studio is full of materials and other natural treasures that allow little ones to enjoy self-directed play and explore their creativity. Lowe’s and Michael's offer regularly scheduled in-store, hands-on activities for kids, including Lowe’s Build and Grow clinics and a variety of craft classes at Michael’s.

Around TownTo do the Downtown Mall properly with the kids, have an awesome homemade ice cream at Chaps, frozen yogurt at Sweet Frog or a gelato at Splendora's. To experience that small town feel, stop in and enjoy a root beer at the old-timey lunch counter of Timberlake's Drugstore. Make sure to stop in at the Main Street Arena or the Virginia Discovery Museum and finish up at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion for a little echo testing or a free live concert during the summer at Fridays After Five.
At the Virginia Discovery Museum, kids can make scarves fly, swab the
deck of the pirate ship, “live” in a historic log cabin and more. The museum's Little Charlottesville exhibit has a child-sized Main Street and the Bee Corner sponsored by CharlottesvilleFamily in honor of everyone's favorite bee, Bumble, CharlottesvilleFamily's lovable mascot.
From Downtown, hop on the free trolley and head to The Corner, the cool, “campusy” area located along the edge of the University to the east of The Lawn. The trolley is entertainment and transportation rolled into one. Kids love the old-fashioned feel of the wooden benches and green exterior, which makes any trip more fun!
Always abustle with students, The Corner has a great selection of casual restaurants with college prices as well as trendy shops. Did you know that General Custer marched his troops on the Lawn at the University of Virginia during the Civil War? Today, your youngsters can march, roll, run and hop across this famous patch of land. While there be sure to check out the famous serpentine walls and

A Touch of HistoryHistoric heroes abound in Albemarle and a great way for the family to discover Charlottesville's history is to take a historic tour of Downtown during the summer or get tickets to the Spirit Walk at Halloween; both start at the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society. Every local should of course make a point to visit Monticello and nearby Ash-Lawn Highland. You'll find every tour is always different, newly
fascinating and exhibits changing. Watch for their festivals and
workshops too which give us locals a special chance to take advantage of the historic wealth in our very own backyard.
When you explore Monticello with the kids, stop by the Griffin Discovery Room in the Smith Education Center. Kids can learn how to weave, write on a polygraph machine and more. Jefferson's multitude of inventions within the main house will also fascinate youngsters — after they see the dumbwaiter, they'll want one at home!
If you're reluctant to fast-forward back to present
time, grab lunch at Michie Tavern. The 18th century–style Southern buffet
will quiet rumbling stomachs. As the skies darken, take budding astronomers to the McCormick Observatory. For many, the cool pulley-operated observing chair may be the highlight of
the outing! Before you leave, check out the
great “outer space stuff” in the museum area. For

Artsy OutingsDespite its formal sounding name, the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection of the University of Virginia is fun for all ages. The museum offers great kids' programs that tie into current exhibits, though the decorations, including ponds, record-sized trees and playful sculptures, are enough to entertain by themselves! Next, stop by UVA's Fralin Museum of Art; it might be small, but sure packs a punch for history and art lovers.
Where else in Charlottesville can you see a Greek vase, a painting from the Middle Ages and one from the middle of the 20th century? Families will appreciate the children's guide. Finally, head to the McGuffey Art Center to observe artists in action, or become one yourself! The clay class is great for kids who love getting their hands dirty. The center offers a wide range of visual arts and dance classes for kids, teens and adults.

Amazement Square (Lynchburg)1–2 hour drive
Kids can slide, dangle, crawl, leap, swing and zip through the tallest indoor climbing structure in the nation. Toddlers can roam safely in the “Big Red Barn” — complete with a cow to milk, crowing rooster, crops to harvest and an earthworm’s eye view of growing plants. In the Indian Island Cultural Gallery, you can hear children playing drums in the authentically recreated local Monacan Village. Kids of all ages love the James River Waterways, where they can take a miniature bateau through locks and canals. The paint-on-the-walls room and music-recording studio are a few of the other popular exhibits. Make sure to check out the HVAC School Bus outside; children love pretending to operate the bus. Skateboarders can practice their ollies and nollies at Amazement Square’s Rotary Centennial Riverfront Skatepark as well. = amazementsquare.org • (434) 845-1888
American Shakespeare Center & Blackfriars Playhouse (Staunton)0–1 hour drive
Shakespeare comes to life at Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton. Constructed as the world’s only replica of Shakespeare’s original indoor theater, this beautiful 300-seat playhouse transports visitors back to the Elizabethan era. The main floor is reserved seating, while the second level is general seating (so arrive early as seats are first-come, first-served). For those who do arrive early, you will likely find a fun pre-show to entertain you while you wait. = ascstaunton.com • (540) 851-1733
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (Appomattox)1–2 hour drive
Did you know that no papers were signed here between Lee and Grant? Ever wonder what was Lee’s final request and why they met at the McLean home instead of the Court House? Here is your chance to find out! While most Civil War sites commemorate the clash of armies, Appomattox is a memorial to peace. In 1865, the Civil War ended when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, in the parlor of the McLean house. Today the sleepy village appears much as it did then,

Belle Isle (Richmond)1–2 hour drive
Fascinating history, coupled with the island’s high cliff walls, rushing rapids and stone ruins, make Belle Isle a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. One of seven sections in the 550-acre James River Park System in Richmond, Belle Isle is a 54-acre island was once the site of a Civil War prison camp for northern soldiers. Here visitors can walk the trails, enjoy mountain biking, watch birds, climb rocks, explore old and ruined buildings, kayak, fish, sunbathe or swim. Located under the Lee Bridge across from the Richmond Riverfront, it is accessible from the north side via the pedestrian bridge suspended under the Lee Bridge. = jamesriverpark.org • (804) 646-8911
Children’s Museum of Richmond (Richmond)1–2 hour drive
Try on eagle’s wings, wiggle through a digestive tract, tinker in the Inventor’s laboratory or create your own art. Complete with a Virginia limestone cave, a kid-sized grocery store and a toddler-sized museum within the museum, it’s no surprise that CMoR is one of the top-ranked children’s museums nationally. With 42,000 square feet, it offers several interactive exhibit areas — including ones that opened in 2013 — a changing gallery, a museum shop and more to keep the whole family entertained for hours. Next door, the Science Museum’s multi-ton granite kugel sculptures of the Earth and the moon draw kids who are amazed at their ability to move these hefty spheres with a slight touch (see pg 122). To avoid crowds, we recommend visiting these popular “Museums on the Boulevard” midweek, preferably on a nice day when everyone else is outside. CMoR has satellite locations in Short Pump and Chesterfield as well. = c-mor.org • (804) 474-2667
If you’re headed to Richmond, be sure to visit Agecroft, an incredible Tutor estate next door from Virginia House (see pg 125). Agecroft, originally built in England, was shipped across the Atlantic and rebuilt along the James River. You’ll really want to make time for a stop around the holidays, when Agecroft decorates for Christmas in three historical periods. Plan to hang around the neighborhood, Carytown, which has very hip shops and fantastic dining.

There’s a lot to see, so be sure to set aside a whole afternoon for your visit. Hatton Ferry (Scottsville)0–1 hour drive
If you read Mark Twain as a kid and dreamed of river adventures, here is your chance. Located just 25 miles south of Charlottesville, the Hatton Ferry is one of only two poled ferries still operating in the country. The site dates back to the late 1800s when an old store, now a river outfitter’s shop, was built by the original ferry owner. A record flood in 1985 sank the ferryboat, so the Virginia Department of Transportation replaced it with a metal one in 1986. The ferry offers a fun trip across the river for all ages. Keep in mind that the ferry only runs from mid-April through October and when water levels are adequately high, so call the Albemarle Historical Society before embarking on your trip. = thehattonferry.org • (434) 296-1492
Henricus Historical Park (Chester)1–2 hour drive
Henricus Historical Park is home to a re-creation of an actual English settlement circa 1611, with costumed interpreters, where you can experience what it was like for the first English settlers living along the James River. The land had been inhabited by the Native Americans known as the Arrohateck, and it was here that Pocahontas resided at Rock Hall and was courted by John Rolfe. The park preserves the colony’s legacy, which included many New World firsts: the first hospital (Mt. Malady), the first college, the first tobacco fields and the first privately owned land. Currently you can visit a re-created Indian village located directly on the banks of the James River, then enter the Citie filled with several buildings, gardens and a visitor’s center. The park is also home to hiking trails and for an additional fee, you can take a James River boat tour aboard the Discovery Barge II. = henricus.org • (804) 748-1611

Washington, D.C.
As the only congressionally designated museum focusing entirely on children, the National Children’s Museum, formerly known as the Capitol Children’s Museum, inspires its young visitors (up to age 10) to become involved in their communities, whether at home or on a global scale, and have fun doing it!
Closed from 2004 to until December 2012, the NCM reopened in its new location just 10 minutes from downtown Washington, DC, in National Harbor, Maryland. Little ones in tow? Head to the 3 & Under gallery, which features Sesame Street characters and themes! In this fun play area, infants and toddlers can play safely inside Cookie Monster’s International Yum Yum Lunch Truck, explore the sensory water bed, hop down a slide and more!
Kids ages 3–8 will have a blast in the Our World gallery, which includes a lively marketplace that changes periodically to highlight a specific country, a “Pack Your Bag” exhibit
with an airport luggage carousel and a miniature town complete with a pizzeria, school, shipping yard and more. Watch the kids pack and move mini shipping crates with the giant crane, race toy cars down textured tracks, climb aboard the tuk-tuk (a three-wheeled taxi) and dress up as a fireman.
If you have older kids in tow, head to the International
Spy Museum, where they can take on new secret identities from the ever-mysterious world of international espionage in a fun, interactive museum!
Since opening in 2002, not only has the International Spy Museum been the only museum in the United States focused entirely on espionage, but it has also possessed the largest collection of international espionage artifacts on public display. If your kids are fans of the James Bond series, they won’t want to miss some of the unique items on display in the museum, including everything from the Aston Martin DB5 from “Goldfinger” to Silva’s laptop from “Skyfall.” With hands-on components, artifacts, computer interactives and more, the museum offers visitors a closer look at the men and women behind some of the world’s most infamous spy missions.
The International Spy Museum also offers special experiences in addition to its general exhibit. “Operation Spy” is a must for kids who want to live the

spy life for themselves! The one-hour mission allows visitors to complete their own operation in the fictional country of Khandar, complete with secret audio conversations, an escape from a high-security compound and more. Here’s one museum where kids are encouraged to crawl through the duct work, hang from a construction site and diffuse an atom bomb. (While all children are welcome, the Museum suggests it’s content is best suited for ages 7 and up.)
If you haven’t been to the (free!)Smithsonian’s National Zoo in the last few years, consider adding it to your itinerary.
Two factors are very important for a fun day at the national zoo: age and weather. First, the kids need to be old enough to enjoy the grounds, which are hilly, or young enough to be pushed in the stroller. Second, the weather needs to be mild enough that the animals are out where they can be seen and that your family doesn’t drag after an hour disappointed.
Here are a few other important tips: Take the Metro, if you can, to avoid parking fees (about $20). When you arrive, get off at the Cleveland Park station so your 10-minute walk to the zoo is downhill; when you leave, walk downhill (again) for about 10 minutes to the Woodley Park–Zoo station.
Build anticipation in the days or weeks before your visit by checking out the animal cams — baby pandas! — and the zoo’s materials for children, found online and on the zoo’s app. Try to anticipate other things that will be important to you (stroller rentals, hours of operation) and your crew (animal feeding times, guided programs). You can’t plan for every eventuality, but you can cross some off your list.

Humpback Rocks/Mountain Farm Trail (Afton)0–1 hour drive
This short & easy trail winds through an 1890s farm, complete with log cabin, chicken coop, honey tree, springhouse, garden and more. The best chance to catch the living history demonstrations and live bluegrass concerts is to visit weekends during warm weather. (During winter most of the facilities are closed, although the trail remains open.) For those who are daring and limber, just across the road at milepost 6.0 is the trail up to Humpback Rocks, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of both the Shenandoah and Rockfish valleys. The initial walking is along steep but easy terrain with numerous benches making it doable for most. The last stretch of the trail up to the rocks is narrow and requires a bit of scrambling but is well worth the amazing views. As always, encourage kids to be cautious — and supervise them well — for a safe, fun outing. Humpback Rocks also has access to the Appalachian Trail. = nps.gov/blri • (540) 377-2377

Lora Robins Gallery of Design from Nature (Richmond)1–2 hour drive
Are you fascinated by all things that glow in the dark? The fossils, gems, shells and other items in this University of Richmond collection are impressive, but the real fun lies in comparing recurring patterns found in thousands of amazing nature items throughout the world. Since a considerable amount of the collection is housed behind glass, it may not be the best outing for the toddler set, but there is a very kid-friendly glow-in-the-dark room that, by itself, is worth the visit. Imagine your home could accommodate being decorated with incredible golden columns, 10 stories high, and that it had a temperature control system that held steady and comfortable year-round. Now add to that a built-in organ with pipes covering 3.5 acres. This is the luxury of Luray Caverns, the largest eastern U.S. cavern and a National Landmark, with some of the most spectacular formations you can imagine. Remember to bring a light jacket even in the heat of summer and be sure to rub the “fried eggs” on your way out! While you’re there, explore the garden maze outside, check the schedule of the Singing Tower’s carillon of bells recitals and escort any car buffs to the Car and Carriage Caravan Museum. The museum covers the evolution of transportation from 1725 to 1941 — with jewels such as an 1892 Benz, an 1840 Conestoga Wagon, a 1908 Baker Electric, a 1913 Stanley Steamer and the 1925 Rolls Royce that belonged to one-time Hollywood heartthrob Rudolph Valentino. Maymont is a full day of adventures, from the Victorian mansion of the Dooley family to their gardens, which include a zoo, the James River Nature Center and the Children’s Farm. The 12,000 square foot historic home is meticulously decorated. A favorite room with guests on the tour is the Swan Room with its carved wooden bed shaped like a swan — a classic example of the high style of the Gilded Age. Be sure to stroll the grounds to experience the gardens and, of course, stop to see the animals too. On nice days, stop for a treat from one of the ice cream vendors! Completed in 1910, the Italian Garden’s exquisite stonework is Petersburg granite, and remains unmatched by any other public garden. The Robins Nature Center is packed with James River exhibits and quite engaging for all ages. Natural Bridge & Native American Village (Natural Bridge)1–2 hour drive
Considered one of the country’s most prized natural wonders, the Natural Bridge has been admired for centuries for its immense size and natural beauty. Standing at 215 feet tall and 90 feet wide, it is actually higher than Niagara Falls. As a young man in 1750, George Washington surveyed the property, and today you can still see where he carved his initials into the wall. On site is a living history Native American Village where visitors can learn about Native American life 300 years ago and watch guides as they weave baskets and work in their “ati” (a hand-constructed house covered in woven cattails). Walk the mile-long Cedar Creek Nature Trail ending at Lace Falls, and stay for the music and light show presented at dark on weekends. Many other nearby attractions include the Caverns, Toy Museum (which houses over 45,000 toys spanning almost 300 years), the Wax Museum and Mark Cline’s marvelously imaginative Foamhenge. = naturalbridgeva.com • (800) 533-1410

As the waters receded, Mother Nature took out her chisel and carved a masterpiece through solid rock to create the seven Natural Chimneys you see today. These mammoth limestone structures tower as much as 120 feet above the Valley. Viewing the Natural Chimneys from different angles allows your imagination to run wild, but there’s much to do here besides admiring nature’s handiwork. A 145-site family-oriented campground with water, electricity, hot showers and a laundry make this a favorite vacation destination, along with playgrounds and 2.5 miles of biking and hiking trails. = co.augusta.va.us • (540) 245-5727
Pamplin Historical Park & National Museum of the Civil War Soldier (Petersburg)1–2 hour drive
Pamplin is recognized as the most innovative Civil War history park in the United States. The 422-acre park is located on the site of the April 2, 1865, “Breakthrough” battle that led to the evacuation of the Confederate capital at Richmond. The site includes four museums, four antebellum homes, living history exhibits, shops and dining facilities. Costumed interpreters demonstrate military and civilian life in the Civil War era, and historians conduct guided tours of the battlefield and plantation homes. The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier is the park’s centerpiece, with artifacts and an interactive learning area that lets you hear the words of a Civil War soldier describing his experiences and wartime fate. Pamplin has three miles of interpreted trails laid out in 15-45 minute walking loops through preserved Civil War fortifications. Plan to spend an afternoon here — there’s that much to see and do. = pamplinpark.org • (877) 726-7546

Fishin’ Holes!Enjoy some “reel” fun in the great outdoors in a sport that you can enjoy for a lifetime. There is nothing quite like feeling the tug of a fish on the line, and there are many valuable life lessons to be found in fishing for kids — such as how to be a responsible sportsman and patience … lots of patience!
For beginners, don’t expect to land your limit or reel in the Big One to mount on the wall on your first trip. Just have fun! Don’t be intimidated about knowing the proper fishing technique, either. The hook and bait need to make it into the water, and that’s all that counts for first-timers.
Here are a few spots where aspiring and experienced anglers alike can try their lines. Beaver Creek Lake in Crozet is well stocked for fishing and allows boats. You can relax at shaded picnic tables, wander a wooded trail or swim when you need a break from the sun.
(434) 296-5844 Chris Greene Lake Park in Earlysville is popular for fishing. Canoe rentals are available, and a recently built wheelchair accessible pier provides additional choices. (434) 973-3790
Howardsville Canoe Livery, just outside Scottsville, provides canoe and kayak rentals as well as custom batteau trips and shuttle services for individuals or groups. (434) 286-3331 James River Reeling & Rafting and James River Runners are both located in Scottsville. As outfitters, they provide transportation and basic equipment for camping and fishing along with tubes, rafts, canoes and kayaks for simple day outings or for an extended holiday. James River Reeling & Rafting: (434) 286-4386; James River Runners: (434) 286-2338
Lake Albemarle is run by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and has largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, sunfish and stocked channel catfish. (804) 367-1000

Mint Springs Valley Park in Crozet is beautiful. Lake swimming, grills and a playground round out a day of fishing. It is the site of the county’s annual Trout Fishing Day each spring. (434) 823-4921
Rivanna Reservoir supports a wide variety of fish. There is a public boat ramp near the filtration plant of the reservoir located just north of town. Rose River Vineyard & Trout Farm in Syria is where visitors can fish
ponds for rainbow trout raised in the spring
waters of the Rose River. No license is required. Bring your own pole. (540) 923-4050
Shenandoah River Adventures of Front Royal offers canoe, raft, kayak and tube trips on a remote section of the legendary Shenandoah River. (888) 309-7222 Sherando Lake in Lyndhurst is great for boat fishing and has a reservoir for bank fishing, too.
Spend a few days and camp, or just come for the day to fish and swim. (540) 291-2188 The Montebello State Fish Hatchery isn’t a place where you can go fishing, but it is a very cool “fish outing” just the same. Each year approximately 170,000 newly hatched trout are released to stock waters. Fish at various stages of maturity are visible in cascading pools where visitors can feed them. (540) 377-2418 Totier Creek offers a great spot to get away from it all and enjoy a quiet day of boating and fishing in Scottsville. (434) 296-5844 Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is the complete resource for finding out where and how to fish. They can also help anglers with licenses. (804) 367-1000

P. Buckley Moss Museum (Waynesboro)0–1 hour drive
P. Buckley Moss, Virginia’s most famous living artist, relocated to the Shenandoah Valley, inspired by the scenery and the simple lifestyle of the Amish and Mennonite communities. The folk art museum itself resembles a large early 19th-century farmhouse, and her art is distinctive with its subject matter focused on country life at its finest. Visitors also enjoy seeing her doll house collection. Best of all, about four times a year Pat herself hosts a gallery day to visit with fans and sign autographs. = pbuckleymoss.com • (800) 343-8643
Route 11 Chips (Middletown)1–2 hour drive
Chip lovers, rejoice! Route 11 potato chip company makes chips the old-fashioned way — by hand. Motor on down to its factory in Mount Jackson down the road from Shenandoah Caverns (look for the water tower painted with apples) to sample the results yourself. (Call ahead to be sure they’re cooking that day.) View their spudmasters through a window while they create their chip masterpieces, including their Dill Chip voted “Best Chip to Eat with a Burger” by Real Simple magazine. There are many unusual flavors — the brave can try Mama Zuma’s Habanero — and all are free of trans fat, MSG, preservatives and cholesterol. No formal factory tours are offered; the best time to see the action is in the morning through early afternoon. While you’re in the area, stop by Belle Grove Plantation, a National Historic Landmark offering daily tours April–October. = rt11.com • (800) 294-SPUD
Science Museum of Virginia (Richmond)1–2 hour drive
Imagine yourself climbing into a Piper Cub Airplane or a Friendship 7 spaceship replica! You can do this and much more at the Science Museum of Richmond, occupying the historic Broad Street train station. It offers hundreds of hands-on exhibits covering topics such as computers, electricity, biology, aeronautics, chemistry and more. As an added bonus, the five-story, domed screen IMAX theatre will make you feel as if you are part of the action (separate charge). Lectures, special events, astronomy activities and many workshops are posted on their website. (The Children’s Museum of Richmond is next door; see pg 107.) = smv.org • (800) 659-1727

Shenandoah Caverns (Shenandoah)1–2 hour drive
Shenandoah Caverns are a treat for everyone, regardless of age or ability. Eighty percent of the tour is fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, and there is elevator service. National Geographic has featured some of the unusual formations here, and it is truly an awe-filled tour along wide level pathways. While the formations are limestone, the water trickles through mineral deposits including iron and magnesium, creating beautiful displays of color. This is the perfect place to bring small children. (Just pack coats as the temperature is a steady 54 degrees year-round!) Discovered by several local youths in 1884 who descended 150 feet down a fissure to explore, the caverns were opened in 1922 to much acclaim. Other sites to see here include the American Celebration on Parade, which features more than 30 parade floats, props and stage settings — its American Flag float has appeared in five Presidential inauguration parades, including President Obama’s. Some of the floats are even open for visitors to climb on to and take photos! Stop by the Yellow Barn afterward for a celebration of American rural traditions and more fun children’s attractions. = shenandoahcaverns.com • (540) 477-3115
Shenandoah National Park0–1 hour drive
When it’s time to get away from it all, the Shenandoah National Park provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the urban world. Built by Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, this park has it all — breathtaking mountain vistas, serene woodland trails and an abundance of wildlife including deer, black bear, birds, wild turkey and other woodland animals. Most people experience the park via Skyline Drive, which meanders along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where there are 75 overlooks for you to stop and stretch your legs. If you want to stay awhile, campgrounds and backcountry areas (request a pass) are sprinkled across the park or you could take it nice and easy at Big Meadows Lodge or Skyland Lodge. The dining rooms at the lodges, with beautiful views and local dishes on the menu, could add a lot to your visit even if you don’t stay overnight. = nps.gov/shen

Sherando Lake (Stuarts Draft)0–1 hour drive
Known as the jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Sherando Lake is tucked away within the George Washington National Forest. The area has two lakes, with a recreation area between them. The lower 25-acre spring-fed lake has a 200-yard sandy beach, shaded play area, bathhouses with warm showers and a wading area for children. Boating is allowed and the lake is stocked with trout, bass and catfish for fishing. The area is perfect for a picnic, with its 70 picnic tables, grills, and covered shelter. Hiking trails wind their way around the lake, giving visitors a panoramic view. For a greater challenge, take Cliff Trail, which travels above the lake. There are three family camping loops with 65 sites, about half of which have electric hook-ups. There are also special evening programs in the summer. = fs.usda.gov/gwj • (540) 291-2188
Sugar Hollow Reservoir (White Hall)0–1 hour drive
This is a great spot for a quick and cool break from the Albemarle summer. The reservoir is only a pleasant 30-minute drive from Charlottesville on beautiful winding Garth Road to White Hall, heading straight past the Piedmont Store in White Hall onto Sugar Hollow Road (instead of following SR 810 to the right) and then about five miles up to the parking lot on the other side of the reservoir. From here you can follow along either the North or South Fork of the Moorman River up into Shenandoah National Park. Either direction you take, you will pass terrific swimming holes. The closest, and most popular with young families, is only a half-mile up the North Fork. The locally famous “Blue Hole” swimming hole is about 1.5 miles up the South Fork. Another 2.5 miles up the South Fork will take you onto the Appalachian Trail at Jarman Gap. You can even drop in a line and try to catch some fish if you have a license. = dgif.virginia.gov
For a full day of fun, consider stopping at these attractions en route to the Museum of the Shenandoah (shenandoahmuseum.org): Dinosaur Land (see pg 108), Belle Grove (bellegrove.org), Cedar Creek Battlefield (cedarcreekbattlefield.org) and the Route 11 Potato Chip Factory (see pg 122). On Winchester’s charming pedestrian mall there is the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum (discoverymuseum.net) as well as fabulous shopping and dining. You can even amble over to George Washington’s office on nearby Cork Street.

Sunspots Studios is a fun place to stop to do a little shopping and also watch the artists in action, although you should definitely call ahead to be sure that there will be someone blowing that day. Valley Baseball League
In the movie Field of Dreams, there’s a memorable scene when the character of Terence Mann gives a stirring speech about our great American pastime and says, “The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball.” The Valley Baseball League has been a constant in the Shenandoah Valley since it began in 1923. The league consists of 12 collegiate teams (playing in Aldie, Charles Town, Covington, Front Royal, Harrisonburg, New Market, Rockbridge, Staunton, Strasburg, Waynesboro, Winchester and Woodstock) in two divisions. The teams play a 44-game schedule during the summer. Many former VBL players have gone on to the Major League, which partially funds the VBL. = valleyleaguebaseball.com • (540) 213-8290
Virginia House (Richmond)0–1 hour drive
The Virginia House is a source of endless fascination for those interested in 16th-century English architecture. The house is a blend of three English Tudor designs. The exterior of the west wing is a replica of Sulgrave Manor, which once belonged to a British ancestor of George Washington. The center section is a reproduction of the Priory in Warwickshire, England, which was dismantled and shipped to Virginia. The model for the east wing was Wormleighton Manor, a Spencer-Churchill family estate in England. The rooms are decorated with English and Spanish antiques, and the property boasts eight acres of exquisite gardens. The house, operated by the Virginia Historical Society, is open for tours only during weekends. = vahistorical.org • (804) 353-4251

Virginia Safari Park (Natural Bridge)1–2 hour drive
Get ready to roll down the windows and take a wild ride of discovery through 180 amazing acres of critters. Remember the in-park speed limit is 5 miles per hour, but the main traffic jams are four-legged, not four-wheeled. You can feed and pet more than 400 different animals that roam freely over three miles of road; just don’t feed the zebras (they don’t share particularly well) or Watusi cattle (the horns are self-explanatory). For an additional fee, you can even ride in the hay wagon to feed the bison. Visitors of all ages will enjoy marveling at the gentle giraffes, deer, piglets and camels nibbling daintily from your hand or bucket. A souvenir stand and petting zoo are at the entrance. Kangaroos and giraffes are enclosed separately in the 10-acre walk-through zoo, along with cheetahs, flamingos and more! To see baby animals, plan your trip for either spring or early summer.
