FRAgRAnCE stORYOur press releases are also available to wholesale customers for use in their own marketing initiatives. Please ask for details. Here is a shortened version of ‘the perfumed garden’ press release:

David Austin’s obsession with the strength, character and quality of each rose’s scent means that the English Roses offer the gardener an intriguing array of fragrances.• the weather conditions, while the petals are still forming within the bud, influence the quality and strength of an individual bloom’s perfume.• Fragrance is intensified by warm, humid weather.• A flower smells differently in the morning, at midday and in the evening. A rose bud smells slightly different to the partly or fully open flower. Characteristic, complex notes often appear as the bloom ages.• most of the fragrance of a rose is held in the petals, although the stamens often have musky or clove scents.

Fragrance in the english rosesDuring the eight year trialling process, David Austin works with perfumier, Robert Calkin, to assess the character and strength of each rose’s fragrance.• One of Robert’s tips is to learn to explore rose scents by comparing two roses side by side to highlight their differences and similarities.• the unusual scent, myrrh, appeared in 1961 with David Austin’s first rose, the once flowering ‘Constance spry’, reputed to have been steve Jobs’s favorite rose.• Everyone has a very individual perception of fragrance: scents evoke different memories and responses.

Fragrance typesEnglish Roses can be grouped into five fragrance types, although there is much interplay between them.• myrrh has the aromatic, licorice warmth of sweet anise. Amongst roses, it is now almost exclusively confined to the English Roses, although it can be found in other plants, such as lilac and Hawthorn. Best: ‘wollerton Old Hall’.• Fruity - the rose is related to many fruits, including apples, pears, raspberries, strawberries and apricots. Best: ‘lady Emma Hamilton’.• Musk - even a small amount of the romantic musk rose scent will perfume the air. The source of the scent is frequently the stamens. Best: ‘the generous gardener’.• Old Rose - David Austin’s favorite rose fragrance is the classic old rose, which he believes is the most alluring of all the rose fragrances. Best: ‘gertrude Jekyll’.• tea Rose - often compared to opening a packet of fresh China Tea - most frequently appears in the yellows and apricots. Best: port sunlight.

WayS to uSe DaViD auStin roSeSHedgesEnglish Rose hedges repeat flower prolifically, producing flushes of glorious, fragrant blooms. They have attractive healthy, green foliage and their thorns help deter intruders. Tips• when planting, space the shorter varieties about 1½ ft. apart and taller varieties

about 3 ft. apart. • Adjust the height of the hedge by pruning.some of our favourite varieties (for tall hedges): strawberry Hill; (for medium hedges): Charlotte, Harlow Carr, mary Rose, molineux, Queen of sweden, scepter’d isle, susan williams-Ellis; (for short hedges): Darcey Bussell, munstead wood, sophy’s Rose.

Mixed Borderswe always encourage gardeners to combine English Roses with other flowering plants as companions. The pure, natural colours of the roses allow them to har-monize with the widest possible range of companion plants, creating a wonder-ful array of colour, form, texture and scent. All the English Roses can be grown in mixed borders. Tips• Add English Roses to mixed borders to extend the flowering season.• Plant the roses in compact groups of the same variety to create greatest

impact.• larger roses will provide height and structure without the need for staking.

WayS to uSe DaViD auStin roSeSpots and ContainersContainer gardening is increasingly popular. English Roses, with their graceful, bushy habits and long flowering season, are highly effective grown this way. Use to decorate balconies, paths, seating areas, entrances, or areas of gravel and paving, where their many-petalled, deliciously fragrant flowers can be enjoyed at close quarters. Almost any of the English Roses can be grown in large pots. Tips• Choose a large container to give the roots more room to develop and

prevent the soil drying out too quickly. • Take extra care to feed and water regularly.• group a number of containerized roses together to create the impression

of a garden.

Climberssome English Roses make the most excellent climbers and indeed we believe they are, as a group, the best of all climbing roses. They are vigorous, without being too tall, and so are easy to manage. they also have a remarkable ability to flower all the way down to the base of the plant. They are very generous with the number of stems they produce from the base and so there is plenty to work with when fanning them out on a wall, trellis or fence. They are also ideal for obelisks, arches or pillars. neW For Spring 2018

Tree roses are ideal for creating focal points in key areas of the garden and can also be used to line a path, frame a doorway or bring interest to a bare wall. Standards are useful for adding height to a border and look particularly impressive when planted closely together in groups of three or four.

it is important to stake standards at planting time, to assist the stem in holding up the bounty of full sized blooms all summer. All are budded at 3’ 3” (1m) in height.

Standard tree rosesstandard Roses are magnificent garden plants. they are created by budding three shrubs on a stem; hence the dramatic effect. we believe English Roses, with their natural, bushy growth and beautiful, fragrant flowers, are the finest roses for growing as standards.

shrubs: All the roses listed here are ideal for a number of purposes in the garden, whether grown on their own, or in association with other flowers and shrubs. we have indicated varieties that also perform very well in large containers and those which are ideal for hedging.

Climbers: All David Austin’s Climbing Roses are suitable for south, East and west-facing walls (s,E,w). some of the more vigorous varieties are also suitable for north-facing walls (n). All are recommended for full sun or partial shade, provided there is not too much competition at the roots and the rose is not overhung by trees.

David Austin’s roses are protected by plant breeder’s rights, patents and trademarks.

planting time Containerized roses can be planted all year round, although extra attention to watering will be required in hot spells until the roses are well established.

planting position Select a site with at least four hours of sun each day, although in areas with hot summers shade from the afternoon sun can be beneficial. generally roses will not flourish where their roots are in competition with the roots of other plants, especially trees and hedges.

planting Distances if you have the space, English Roses look superb planted in groups of three or more of one variety. They will then grow together to form one dense shrub, which will provide a more continuous display and make a more definite statement in the border. Depending on the varieties and your climate we suggest planting about 18 - 24" apart within the group and 3-4 ft. between plants of neighboring varieties.

Soil type Roses will grow in a wide range of soils, but they do appreciate good soil preparation. The addition of well rotted manure or garden compost before planting will help ensure strong growth.

planting Just prior to planting containerized roses should be soaked for 30 minutes or so and then allowed to drain for an hour or two. when planted, the base of the stems should be about 3" below ground level in cold winter areas and at ground level in milder areas. water generously until the plant is well established.

planting in Containers plant in a 50:50 mix of loam based and loam free compost and apply a good, slow release fertiliser. water regularly, especially during the summer, when they may need to be watered daily. Prune by at least half when spring growth begins.

Feeding, Mulching and Watering Feeding, generous mulching and occasional deep watering will help encourage strong growth and more flowers. mulch in spring, preferably using well rotted manure or garden compost.

Healthy roses The best way to keep your roses healthy is to choose disease resistant varieties and grow them as well as possible. Excessive

nitrogen can make roses more susceptible to both pests and diseases. However an occasional spray can help, the most effective being at the start of the season before symptoms develop. Beware of frosts the night after spraying - they will scorch the leaves badly. There are different chemicals and laws in many of the provinces, so we recommend that you seek the latest advice from your garden center team, nursery or local rose society.

Winter pruning pruning is very easy. in areas with relatively mild winters, January and February is the best time. in regions with cold winters, pruning should be delayed until spring growth is just starting. On all plants, remove very weak, old and woody and dead and diseased stems.

english Shrub roses prune back by between 1/3 and 2/3, depending on what height you would like your rose to reach next season. Each year remove some of the older stems to encourage fresh, new growth from the base.

english Climbing rosesthe previous year’s flowering shoots should be reduced to 3 or 4 buds or about 4" - 6" and the strong, new stems tied in, cutting out older ones as necessary.

english ramblers leave to ramble, tying in the strong new stems to provide support. if they need to be constrained, prune as for climbers.

Dead-Headingthis is the removal of spent flowers. it encourages repeat-flowering and makes a tidier plant. Either remove just the dead flower or cut the stems down to the first full leaf.

Summer pruning in warm climates it may be beneficial to summer prune by cutting back most of the spent flowering shoots, leaving just a few inches. This can be repeated through the season as the rose repeat flowers and will encourage more compact growth and quicker repeat-flowering.

Roses are easy to grow and remarkably tolerant. to achieve good results, it is only necessary for them to get a few basic points right. However, roses will respond well to extra care and attention by being more floriferous and healthy. Here is our care advice for home gardeners.
