It doesn’t hurt to be Melissa Rycroft these days. On this chilly February morning, as she makes her way into Birmingham’s Omni Studios, hand-in-hand with her new hubby, Tye Strickland, it’s obvious that she’s really happy and really in love. In town for a special guest appearance at a brunch and bridal show for Birmingham Perfect Wedding Guide, Melissa and Tye display all the makings of a newlywed couple — megawatt smiles, constant hugs and lots of private giggles.

But before marrying the handsome Texas insurance businessman in an intimate and beautiful beachfront ceremony last December in Isla Mujeres, Mexico, Melissa’s love life took an unexpected turn. The former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader originally won the heart of ABC’s The Bachelor, Jason Mesnick (season 13), only to have her proposal retracted during the infamous season recap episode, After the Final Rose. But as one door closed, Hollywood’s door swung right open and welcomed her into the world of overnight stardom.

Now, after an impressive stint on the hit ABC series, Dancing with the Stars, and a number of special correspondent assignments with Good Morning America and Entertainment Tonight, Melissa is learning to fi nd balance with her busy work schedule and her new role as wife.

I got lucky with my wedding dress… it worked perfectly and I never tried on any other dresses.

On falling in love at first sight —with her wedding gown… I got really, really lucky with my wedding dress. I was sitting at Alfred Angelo with my mom, and as I was looking through the catalog, I open up the fi rst couple pages, I saw the dress. It was part of their future collection — it wasn’t even out yet! We spoke with the bridal consultant, and she said she could have one shipped over to the store where we were. They asked if I wanted to try on any other dresses in the meantime, and I said, “No, not at all! I’m going to wait for this dress.” It came in, it worked perfectly and I never tried on any other dresses.

On trusting her wedding planner with just about everything… I always wanted to sneak away, and have a laid back, fun theme [for my wedding] — you can’t get more laid back and fun than Mexico! We weren’t going to use a wedding planner at fi rst because we didn’t think we were going overboard on the planning by any means. But we didn’t know who the fl orists were there; we didn’t know anyone. So we learned very quickly that with international weddings, you really need help. So we did end up working with a planner and luckily, it turned out that she was a jack of all trades.

On bringing southern girl charm, south of the Border… Red Velvet cake is my absolute favorite. One of my musts for the wedding — and there were not a lot of them — was that our wedding cake be red velvet. So there was a little touch of Dallas that came down to Mexico with us. Also, everyone was barefoot. That was something that was important to me. I mean, come on — there isn’t anyone on the beach wearing shoes! We had little baskets at the front where people could drop their shoes off.

I wasn’t trying to be a princess in a castle … on the beach in Mexico. Just keep your theme in mind, and just relax and go with it. It’s your day regardless.

On keeping her marriage a priority…I think the biggest thing is, married life is just like dating life … and just like engaged life. The relationship itself hasn’t changed. We didn’t live together beforehand, and so living together now … it’s awesome to wake up next to your buddy and go to bed with your buddy. I think it’s important not to expect your relationship to change once you get married. Sometimes people have expectations of how married life is supposed to be. Well, the reason that you’re getting married is because of the way your relationship is now. So you have to focus on not letting it change, not rearranging your priorities because of your title change.

On what she looks forward to most for the future… For some reason, Tye and I kind of got this thing fi gured out. The way that my travel schedule has been, and the success he’s having with his company, we’ve never veered off from keeping each other a priority. It’s never become a matter of us telling one or the other, “I think you’re staying at the offi ce too late.” Or, “I think you’re out in L.A. too much.” Somehow, we are stubborn enough, I guess, to keep each other fi rst and foremost in our lives. I don’t ever want that to go away. I don’t want to get a year down the road and we’re both so busy that my life is in L.A. or N.Y. and his is in the offi ce in Dallas. And in three, fi ve, ten years, depending on who you talk to, who knows … we’ll have babies (laughs)!

On what she looks forward to most for the future… For some reason, Tye and I kind of got this thing fi gured out. The way that my travel schedule has been, and the success he’s having with his company, we’ve never veered off from keeping each other a priority. It’s never become a matter of us telling one or the other, “I think you’re staying at the offi ce too late.” Or, “I think you’re out in L.A. too much.” Somehow, we are stubborn enough, I guess, to keep each other fi rst and foremost in our lives. I don’t ever want that to go away. I don’t want to get a year down the road and we’re both so busy that my life is in L.A. or N.Y. and his is in the offi ce in Dallas. And in three, fi ve, ten years, depending on who you talk to, who knows … we’ll have babies (laughs)!

• DON’T create a wedding for others at the expense of your wishes. Focus on the kind of celebration you want, not the one other people expect you to have.

• DON’T ask your attendants to do chores or run errands that should be performed by hired help. If you need baby-sitting at your reception, find one, but not among your wedding party.

• DON’T ask someone to donate an item or service that's normally paid for. Of course, if they volunteer, consider it.

• DON’T surprise guests by asking them to perform non-guest duties, like taking pictures, parking cars or playing the piano.

• DON’T use preprinted thank-you cards in place of a personalized note.

• DON’T plan a punch bowl reception for what rightly is considered mealtime - it's cheap and leaves your guests hungry.

• DON’T forget to search out the face of your new spouse at the reception. Share a smile and commit yourself to repeating those smiles back each day of your life together.
