Police find prostitution in Acland Street, St Kilda

St Kilda is the best address in town

Prostitution is thriving in Grey Street

The sale of grog is rampant in St Kilda, and Acland Park is home to the homeless and intoxicated

Residents complain about the condoms left in Church Square Park

Wartime. St Kilda is the entertainment capital during WWII.The US Army set up a

condom station in mens toilets near Luna Park

St Kilda railway commences. Hundreds flood to the beachProstitution increases

proportionally in St Kilda as car ownership increases and rent for flats and houses become more affordable

Specific areas within St Kilda become known for offering different services - male workers in Shakespeare Grove and Chaucer Street, transexuals work in Barkly, Irwin and Belford Streets, and female workers work in Grey, Blessington and Greeve Streets

The shop owners of Acland and Fitzroy Streets want prostitution removed from their streets and form ‘West Action’’

Operation Zeta, the biggest Police clean-up campaign in St Kilda’s history is undertaken

A labour government introduces legislation that legalises prostitution in brothels that have a valid planning permit

Prostitution is on the rise again in St Kilda, and sex workers have been subjected to violence, attacks and murders as residents and traders protest against a proposed tolerance zone for sex workers

‘I put a padlock on the door to these

toilets, to make sure that only the

people in my street use them. I try

to keep them clean, otherwise they

block and overflow, and make our

streets dirty. No one fixes them. Or

cares.’ Bernard

‘I do the washing here at this

communal tap. I fill my buckets

up and sit around with my friends

washing my family’s clothes. It’s OK.

Except in summer it’s too hot, there

is no shade to sit under. And now in

July, the water does not heat up, it’s

too cold.’ Nqobile

THRESHOLD EDGE

Located at street intersections.Laundry is turned into a social activity through communal washing spaces. Public toilets are unofficially owned by neighbours who control users, and take care for the area.

Transitional space between road and house, an extension of the private house in the public realm. Important due to communal street live and climate.

‘I sit outside my house alot, because

it becomes unbearably hot inside

my house. And I like to be on the

street, with my neighbours & friends.’

‘We like this sunshine out here!

These are my buckets, I use them for

many things, including seats like this.

However once it becomes dark I have

to go inside my house. Narrow, unlit

streets, it is dangerous, don’t be out

after dark.’ Tracey public open space community infrastructure in Johannesburg

Voids within the dense urban fabric serve as space for football, carparking and dumping ground.

‘My friend and I started this sewing

business, it is good and makes me

some money for my family. But in

summer I think we will close down

because it is too hot on the street,

and in my house it is too dark.’

Nozipho

‘In last year’s floods many people

drowned in the stormwater drain so

the Government erected this sign.

But they won’t fix the problem,

and the uncovered drains continue

to be a place where people dump

their rubbish, which is illegal. This is

making our streets very dirty.’ Kaizer

Informal trading occurs on main streets, an important economy source in Diepsloot.

‘Skwatta Kamp Park is the best area

for football ‘cos it’s big and I live just

near here.’ Tony

‘I bought the seeds from the local

Shoprite, and now I grow spinach

just here next to my house. It is alot

cheaper than buying from the shop,

alot better.’ Dumisani
