INTRODUCTION

Cairo is the capital city of Egypt. Egypt is situated in Africa. It is found in North Africa. The main language spoken there is Arabic.

GEOGRAPHY The pyramid Giza was built as a tomb around 4,500 years ago. The Sahara desert covers nearly 2 thirds of Egypt. Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt. The Nile River flows through central Cairo. The Suez Canal is the longest canal with no locks.

Nobody knows what happened to the Great Sphinx’s nose, or why it is not there. The Western desert is low-lying and flat. The Nile River is 4,132 miles long with 960 miles in Egypt. West of the Nile is one of the world’s driest areas. The Suez Canal separates Sinai from the rest of Egypt.

HISTORY

February 28 1922 is Egypt’s independence day. Native kings and queens ruled the country for most of Egypt’s first 2,500 years. In 332 BC Alexander the Great invaded Egypt. A military group overthrew Egypt’s king in 1952.Gamel Abdel Nasser was the first native Egyptian ruler in more than 2,000 years.

CULTURE

Anubis led the dead spirits to the scales of justice where the heart is weighed against a feather. If the heart is heavy it is said to be loaded with bad deeds, whereas if the heart is light, the person is sent to the kingdom of Osiris. Most of the people who live in Egypt are Muslims. Gamel Abdel Nasser was an important leader from 1956-1970. The people’s assembly is a group of 454 people who are elected by their community or who are appointed by the president

Sham al-Nessin means “Scent of the breezes” which is a celebration that is popular in the spring time. Ramadan is the most important month for most Muslims, adults stop eating for the day. After sundown the fasting stops and they enjoy a meal called iftar. The word ihtafala means ‘celebrate’ in the Arabic language.

CLIMATE

The Mediterranean coast is where it rains most. The temperature can reach up to 31 degrees c (88 degrees F) in the Summer. Most people think that the desert is hot and dry, it is, but during the night it is actually quite cold. It rains mostly in the winter but also in the Summer. In the desert there are sometimes sandstorms.

FACTS

The Addax is sort of like an antelope and it can go months without water surviving only on dew. They are endangered, there are fewer than 500 in the wild. The color black in the flag shows Egypt long ago, the white shows Egypt in modern times, the red shows people, and the center of the flag is the symbol of Egypt. Camels are used for transportation. Falcons, jackals, camels, and cats are ‘important animals to the Egyptian culture. Tourism is very important in Egypt.
