Guest Commentaryby Chris Krajewski

Every Octo-ber, for 24years, our na-tion has ob-servedDomestic Vio-lence Aware-ness Month. In a 2010proclamationon this issue,PresidentObama statedthat since thepassage of the Violence AgainstWomen Act (VAWA) 16 years ago,“we have broken the silence sur-rounding domestic violence.”However, the President goes on tosay, “domestic violence remains adevastating public health crisiswhen one in four women will bephysically or sexually assaulted bya partner at some point in her life-time.” And, according to the Cen-ters for Disease Control andPrevention, intimate partner vio-lence results in more than twomillion injuries to women eachyear.

It’s hard to celebrate achieve-ments to end domestic violence inthe face of such shocking statistics. How do we congratulate one an-other on our progress when inti-

mate partner violence is costingour nation more than $8.3 billion, annually, for direct medical andmental health care services andlost productivity from work?

How do we accept the fact thatone in three adolescent girls in theUnited States is a victim of physi-cal, emotional or verbal abusefrom a dating partner – a figurethat far exceeds victimization ratesfor other types of violence affect-ing youth. ese are our daugh-ters and granddaughters. How isthis acceptable?

What will it take to start makingreal strides to end violence againstwomen and girls? is is not vio-lence that occurs in some darkalley at the hands of a stranger.is is violence inflicted by some-one the victim knows, someonethey trust and with whom they’vebeen intimate. Silence and under-reporting still cling to this crimeas victims are made to feel power-less, fearful, embarrassed andguilty. And society still tends toblame the victim—why doesn’t sheleave him, why didn’t she see thiscoming, what is she doing to causethis violence?

What can we do as a nation—acommunity—to end violenceagainst women and girls? Advo-cates urge collaboration at everylevel. Our law enforcement andjustice system must work to holdoffenders accountable and to pro-

tect victims and their children. Allof us have a role to play in com-municating that domestic violenceis always unacceptable: commu-nity leaders, educators, humanservice professionals, health careproviders, businesses and thefaith-based community.

Social movement experts say wemust also change attitudes thatsupport violence against womenand girls. ese attitudes are evi-dent in everything from advertise-ments that objectify women tovideo games that encourage vio-lence toward women. Sexist com-ments and jokes that demean andbelittle women are a constant un-dercurrent flowing through ourdaily lives that work to erode andlimit women’s power and staturein society and contribute to ourculture of violence. Even a seem-ingly harmless movie like Trans-formers 3 is brimming with maleentitlement and objectificationwith one female character an un-mitigated sexual object and theother a caricatured mockery of fe-male leadership. Young moviesgoers are watching these messages, unfiltered, and forming their ownattitudes about what it means to befemale in our society.

It’s up to each of us to be awareof the many contributing factorsthat promulgate gender violence, however blatant or subtle. Everyaction, no matter how small, con-

tributes to the social norms per-petuating intimate partner vio-lence against our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and co-workers.If it devalues women, will youchoose to support it with yourpurchasing power? If a joke, re-mark or comment degradeswomen and bolsters male domi-nance and entitlement will youchoose to ignore it, or challenge it?If someone you know is a victimof intimate partner violence, willyou listen, help and support, orplace blame?

It will take all of us to changethe social norms that sustain vio-lence against women. Choose tobe part of the solution. Choose asafer community for all of us.

If your business, group or or-ganization would like more infor-mation on how to help endviolence against women and girlsin our community, contact theWomen’s Resource Center ofNorthern Michigan at 231-347-1572.

Selling yourhouse is a verytime consuming

task; however, knowing what tofocus on during your preparationcan save you time and effort. ekey to an advantageous sale ispreparation. Below are some help-ful tips on preparing your home,so that you hopefully get a quicksale and a good price.

Stand in front of your house andlook at it; this is the first glimpseof your house a visitor is going tosee. Try and be open minded, don't look at it with good memo-ries, look objectively as a buyerwill. If you can't be objective thenask a friend or colleague to give

you an impartial opinion. First impressions are important

to make sure you play this to youradvantage. If you have a lawn atthe front of the home, make sure itis cut down, the edges aretrimmed and it looks good. Placepotted flowers near the doors tomake a feature of them, any weedsneed to be disposed of, rubbishpicked up, children's toys put awayand any mess from animalscleaned up. Furthermore, do notforget to look at all the walkways, walls, and patios for cracks andcrumbling. Use this as a chance tofix or replace those faults, not onlyon the exterior but the interior aswell; don't forget the roof anddrains. Just by repainting the door, cleaning the windows and washingdown the exterior can improve thelook of your house.

Make the rooms of your houselook more spacious and brighterby taking out clutter and making

sure the rooms are clean. Familyphotos and other personal itemsneed to be stored before the buyerarrives, as they can be quite dis-tracting. One more important taskis to rearrange closets and kitchencabinets. Be sure that all your lightbulbs are bright enough so that thehome does not seem too dim.

Let the viewer enter a room first, introduce them to the room butavoid telling them what the roommay be used for; let them make uptheir own mind. It is extremelyimportant to make sure the wholeproperty is clean and tidy; this alsomeans you have to spend timecleaning items such as the cookerand refrigerator. Switch off appli-ances, particularly if they make anoise when they are running;there is nothing more disturbingthan a constant buzzing soundwhen you are trying to imagineliving in a new home. A few freshflowers in a nice vase or some pot-

pourri is a great way to light up aroom and make it smell fresh aswell. Rather than have items leon kitchen tops, put them away ina cupboard, especially those thatare not used oen. You want toshow the buyer how pretty and bigthe kitchen is so they can imaginethemselves cooking in there.

Don't forget about the windows, not only do you want to make surethey are not dirty, but you alsohave to make sure they are in goodworking condition with no dam-age in the glass. You should payspecial attention to the bathroom;make sure that it is not dirty, re-place the toilet seat and showercurtain, and put out fresh towelsevery day. It may also be a goodidea to give your home a new coatof paint in a neutral color. Anddon't forget the basic truth - notonly luxury homes can have luxu-rious appearance.

Autumn is not only a beautiful time ofyear; it is also the most bountiful of sea-sons. Martha Wagbo Farm and EducationCenter is celebrating the fall harvest with adelicious event; an Autumnberry Harvestand Picnic Potluck this coming Saturday,October 8th, at the Raven’s Roost Farm lo-cated at 2398 Vandermark Road in Bellaire.

Maria Wesserle, Wagbo Program Coor-dinator, states, “We held this event last yearand there were lots of autumnberrys (alsoknown as autumn olives) for attendees toharvest. e berries are very tasty. When

we prepare them, we cook them, dry themout, and mix them with honey to make apreserve. It is a bit like cranberry sauce, with a mix of sweet and sour tastes.”

Autumnberry’s are an invasive shrubwith edible and choice berries commonlyfound throughout the United States. is isthe first year the autumnberry harvest isbeing combined with a picnic potluckevent. Attendees are encouraged to bring adish to pass, plates and utensils, and also ablanket or folding chair for the picnic, though it is not required.

“People should also bring their own pailsfor the berry picking,” notes Wesserle. “We

will start out the day harvesting berries andthen we have our picnic pot luck. Peopleare welcome to go out and harvest moreautumnberry’s aerwards if they choose.”

e Autumnberry Harvest and PicnicPotluck will be held this Saturday, October8th, at 4pm: e event is free and open tothe public. For more info call 231-536-0333 or email [email protected]. or visitwww.Wagbo.org
