Charles or Thomas or Charles Thomas or Thomas Charles TAYLOR was born between 1851 and 1854 in Castlemain Victoria Australia. I have been unable to locate any confirmation regarding his birth. He used different combination of his Christian names and with such a common surname of TAYLOR this made researching very difficult. There is little known about Charles TAYLOR. His marriage makes his date of birth around 1851 and place not recorded but according to his son’s birth registration he was born around 1854 in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. Castlemaine is between the old gold mining towns of Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria Australia. When gold was discovered on the West Coast of New Zealand many miners left the dwindling gold mines of Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria Australia and travelled to New Zealand. Charles may have been one of these miners. I have been unable to locate information about when he left Australia and arrived in New Zealand. Over the years the various New Zealand birth, marriage and death registration of Charles children record several different Christian names and occupations for their father. They include, Charles – Thomas - Charles Thomas - Thomas Charles - Edward and Edward Charles and occupation horse breaker - commercial traveller and butcher. There was a Thomas TAYLOR who left Nelson on the steamer “Wallace”. This appeared in a newspaper article of the West Coast Times dated 25 January 1877. Perhaps he was our man but I do not know for sure. (Reference National Library of NZ paperspast West Coast Times newspaper 25 January 1877)
The below article also appeared in the West Coast Times dated 25 January 1877 and again on the 26, 27, 29, 30 & 31 January, 26, 27 & 28 February and 1 & 2 March 1877

I believe the above Thomas is our Charles TAYLOR as he was born in Australia and when he married his occupation was carrier. Apparently if the police suspected someone of a crime they would publish details in the Police gazettes. I have searched Court records, Police Gazettes and Newspapers and can find no further details regarding any action been taken against Thomas TAYLOR. In a later Police Gazette it recorded another man been charged with stealing some jewellery in the West Coast area so perhaps he was the original thief. Some of the above information may not belong to our Charles TAYLOR but someone else who shared the Christian name Thomas. According to Charles’s intention to marry application he dwelled in Arahura for 5 months making his arrival in the town about June 1878. Kumaru was near Arahura and both in the Waimea district.

I mention that Charles’s occupation was carrier and his future father in law was also a carrier so this is probably how he met his future wife.
Agnes LECKIE was born on 26 June 1865 at Anderson Bay Dunedin New Zealand. Her parents were Margaret formerly BOYLE and Stewart LECKIE occupation Sawyer. Stewart LECKIE Sawyer of Anderson Bay registered the birth on 10 July 1865. The registrar was John GILLIES. (Reference RGO NZ birth registration 1865 folio 595 line 562 Dunedin district)

Agnes was not 15 years old but 13 years and 5 months old when she married. Charles TAYLOR aged 27 years bachelor occupation Carrier married Agnes LECKIE aged 15 years spinster on 28 November 1878 at the Office of the Registrar Goldsborough in the district of Waimea. The witnesses at the wedding were Stewart LECKIE occupation Miner and Margaret LECKIE both from Arahura. Stewart signed his name on the marriage register along with the bride and groom. Margaret made her X mark, as she could not write. The registrar was John S HICKSON. (Reference RGO NZ birth registration 1878 folio 3297 line 1 Waimea district)
Arahura, where Agnes parents were recorded as living, is situated between Hokitika and Goldsborough. Kumara is north of Goldsborough towards Greymouth. In the publication “The West Coast Gold Rushes” by Philip Ross May there is additional information about Goldsborough, Kumara and Arahura. Goldsborough became an important goldmining centre following the discovery of gold there in 1864. By the year 2000 is was a deserted ghost town situated between Hokitika and Greymouth. Goldsborough locality is on the north side of Big Dam Hill, 13 km south west of Kumara and 17km north east of Hokitika in Westland County North Westland. (Reference Dolimore publication page 109)
I visit Goldsborough in 2010 and found a grassed rest area which was once the town. Any signs of the early settlement are well gone or covered by the lush bush but there is a plaque recording historical information about Goldsborough.

Taylor is not recorded and I have been unable to date the map as both are of very poor quality. On a later visit I was unable to locate any of the images. Perhaps they have been transferred to Hokitika Museum as Goldsborough no longer comes under the Greymouth district. West Coast Times 1 July 1879

I am not sure if the above information belongs to our Charles TAYLOR using the Christian name of Thomas but what we do know is by 1880 he began using the Christian name of Charles. Goldsborough’s population had been dropping since 1871 but I do not know when Charles left Goldsborough perhaps in 1879 as he was settled in Dunedin by 1880. 1880 Dunedin Electoral Roll

Although Agnes and Charles TAYLOR married in 1878 it was not until 3½ years later that their first child was born. Finding Edward’s birth registration was very difficult but fortunately his descendants remembered his date of birth and some of his school records confirmed the birth date so I had a good starting point. Edward Charles (registered Stewart James) TAYLOR was born on the 10 May 1882 at New Street Dunedin. His parents were recorded as Agnes formerly LECKIE aged 18 years born Andersons Bay Otago and Thomas Charles TAYLOR aged 28 years born Castlemain Victoria Australia occupation Carter. The registration recorded that the parents were married on 22 November 1880 Waimea Westland New Zealand. The Informant was S LECKIE grandfather of child Dunedin “Informant authorised in writing by the mother” on 14 June 1882. The Registrar was A R Nere [sic]. (Reference: Registrar Generals Office NZ 1882 Folio 1927 Dunedin)
The grandfather Stewart LECKIE not only gave the wrong Christian names on the birth registration but also gave the wrong marriage date of the parents. Agnes’s age matches her birth date but her husband Charles’s age differs from the birth date when they married. Edward was born at his grandparent’s home in New Street Dunedin. The additional information not known until now was the place of birth Castlemaine, Victoria Australia for Agnes’s husband who is now recorded as Thomas Charles TAYLOR. That is if Stewart LECKIE gave the correct details about his son-in-law. The grandfather Stewart had a son named James Edward Charles LECKIE perhaps Stewart got confused when naming his grandson and this is why he registered the child Stewart James and not Edward Charles TAYLOR. Some family traditions state that the male members of the family often had a few drinks before or after they registered a birth. If Stewart had a few too many drinks then this may have resulted in him forgetting the Christian names. Agnes and Charles TAYLOR had a daughter Edith Emily TAYLOR who was born on 13 May 1883. Edith’s daughter gave me her mother’s date of birth and some of her school records confirm the date of birth. Again I have been unable to locate Edith Emily TAYLOR New Zealand birth registration and/or a baptism to assist in confirming her date and place of birth or parents details. The first records being school records that I located for Edith was in 1890 but she should have begun school 2 years earlier in 1888. Agnes’s parents Margaret and Stewart LECKIE had a daughter Edith Jane LECKIE who was born 04 January 1883 New Street Dunedin the same birth year as Edith Emily TAYLOR. She started at Union Street School on 07 March 1888 and her address was Great King Street. Edith Jane (and Agnes Taylor’s) mother Margaret died 24 May 1889 at Great King Street, Dunedin. Great King Street was the home of Agnes and Charles TAYLOR. (Reference RGO NZ birth registration 1883 folio & web reg. 1883/4748 line 326 Dunedin district and Union Street School records Dunedin HKN AG81/U2/0628 and RGO NZ death registration 1889 folio 938 line 249 Dunedin)
Up to 1889 I had located birth and school records for Edith Jane LECKIE but I could not locate any records for Edith Emily TAYLOR. Then after the death of Agnes’s TAYLOR mother Margaret LECKIE I could not find any records for Edith Jane LECKIE but then Edith Emily TAYLOR starts to appear on the School records.

Taylor chart 12-13 compiled by Lynly Lessels Yates New Zealand updated 14 October 2018 6
I believe Edith Emily TAYLOR was actually Edith Jane LECKIE. This is only theory but the research to date leads me to think that it could be true. Perhaps after the death of Margaret LECKIE her daughter Agnes TAYLOR took over the care of Edith Jane LECKIE and brought her sister up as her own daughter Edith Emily TAYLOR.
I have searched and there is no trace of any New Zealand marriage and/or death registration under the name of Edith Jane LECKIE or any combination of the Christian names. Edith Jane LECKIE was also not recorded as living issue on her mother Margaret’s death registration. She also did not appear on her father Stewart’s Australian death registration even though it recorded deceased for his youngest son Benjamin. When Edith Emily TAYLOR married the registration recorded her place of birth as Dunedin but her parent details did not quite match. When Edith’s mother Agnes died the death registration recorded her living issue as 1 male age 22 years (Edward was 25) and 1 female age 14 years (Florence) and no mention of (Edith) Agnes’s other female issue. Agnes TAYLOR was the witness at the wedding of her uncle Archibald LECKIE to Mary COLLINS on 25 March 1884 at the Residence of Rev W B PURTON in Musselburgh Dunedin. Agnes’s father Stewart LECKIE was also a witness. (Reference RGO NZ 1884 Marriages Folio 678 South Dunedin District)

The 1888 Union Street School registers record the parents address as Great King Street were Agnes and Charles dwelled. I believe that Stuart LECKIE was actually Edward Charles TAYLOR and Edith LECKIE was our Edith Emily TAYLOR. The dates of birth are both incorrect as the year is the same as the admission year. After 1888 I have been unable to locate any school records for Stuart and/or Edith LECKIE. On 24 May 1889 Agnes TAYLOR’s mother Margaret LECKIE formerly BOYLE died at Great King Street, Dunedin. I believe Agnes nursed her mother when she was sick as she died in the home of Agnes and Charles TAYLOR. (Reference Registrar Generals Office NZ 1889 Folio 938 Dunedin District)
Someone placed on the Ancestry website that Agnes TAYLOR nee LECKIE had a defector child to John Bray RUSTON (1855-1912). I believe the information about the child born in Australia does not belong to Agnes. The child Henry RUSTON was born 13 February 1889 Collingwood Melbourne Victoria Australia (registration 11441) and died 14 June 1889 Collingwood Melbourne Victoria Australia (registration 6979). The birth and death registration recorded the mother as Ellen Agnes Leckie. The child would have to have been conceived around May 1888, born February 1889, died June 1889. Agnes’s mother Margaret LECKIE died 24 May 1889 at Great South Road Dunedin New Zealand. Records indicate that this was the home of Agnes and Charles TAYLOR. 1890 Dunedin Electoral Roll

In 1893 women received the vote but I have been unable to locate any New Zealand electoral roll entry to match our Agnes TAYLOR. Agnes’s husband Charles does not appear as parent/guardian on any of the children’s school records. There is also no trace of Charles on the 1893 Dunedin Electoral Roll. I believe this confirms that Charles was not living with Agnes and the children.

For information about maintenance payments along with payment for illegitimate children are located in various registers. I have research only some of the Police Gazettes but located no information about Charles deserting Agnes. I still have additional areas of research to do which includes the following resources held at Archives NZ Wellington Maintenance Order Books, Criminal Records Books, Maintenance Payment registers and Police Gazettes. A female child was born on 28 May 1893 in Dunedin and was later known as Florence Stella TAYLOR. Her birth date was given to me by her descendants but I have been unable to locate a New Zealand birth registration and/or baptism until 1911 when she was age 18 years. Florence Stella TAYLOR does not appear on school records until around 1904 but she should have appeared before that at around 1898-1899. When researching school records I located information that she was actually born Florrie/Florence SINCOTT and in later years Agnes became her foster mother and she then became known as Florence Stella TAYLOR. Agnes moved from Dunedin and settled in Invercargill around 1898. Stories handed down by some TAYLOR descendant’s state that an Invercargill newspaper advertised for someone to care of a female child. Agnes TAYLOR replied to the advert and later brought her up as her own and the child became known as Florence Stella TAYLOR. Florence Stella TAYLOR was originally known as Florrie/Florence SINCOTT and her father was Frederick SINCOTT. By using New Zealand Electoral rolls and School records we are able to trace the movements of Frederick and Florence SINCOTT. Florrie/Florence SINCOTT attended Makarewa School before August 1899 followed by Waikiwi School from 14 August 1899 to 12 July 1900 then Invercargill Middle School around 1901. By 1904 she was using the name Florence TAYLOR on school records. (Reference Waikiwi School register number 181 Invercargill Middle school register number 7076)
I have been unable to locate any records regarding Florence’s mother except for a notation on the Waikiwi school records “destination parents gone to Invercargill”. I believe Florence’s mother may have died but I have searched and cannot locate any New Zealand death registration. Perhaps she may have died in Australia.

Rattray appearing on behalf of the debtor whose statement showed that there were creditors (all secure) for $229.9s.9d, against which there is furniture worth $100, and book beds estimated to produce $4 the being deficiency being thus $125.9s.9d. The creditors were P Thomson (Wellington) $94, D Roche, $33.10s, D R Jones $31, A R LECKIE $23.63.6d, Small and Co. / (Hardware advertisers) $14, McDruer, TAYLOR and Co. (Regular advertisers- “Direct Importers” - millinery, umbrellas, clothing materials). $11, W E Pope $5.2s.4d, Dairy Supply Co $4.12s.11d, W S Waterson $4.2s, R G Spiers $1.3s.6d, Herbert, Haynes and Co $16.6s, and T. Flint 16s. Debtor, sworn, said she had been keeping the Union Boarding House since 14
th July
1900 when she had no capital, and her only debt was $100 borrowed from Mr Thomson to purchase furniture. All the other debts, expecting Broad, Small’s and McGruers, has been incurred within the last few months. She first found that she was getting into difficulties just before Easter, but hoped that she would pull up again after the winter was over. She filed because two of the creditors were pressing her. When pressed she sold out expecting to realise sufficient to pay the creditors in full, and with this in view she gave orders to Messrs Jones and Roche for the full amount of their claims. When she found that the valuation was $87 she filed in order that all the creditors would share equally. She had no proposal to make and the high price of necessaries during the winter has a good deal to do with her present position. A statement prepared by Mr Ratray showed that for the sixteen months debtor has been in the Boarding House the butcher were $868.9s. The expenditure was: Butcher $400: Groceries, $919.12s.6d; Rent $96; Wages $96; Board Small and Co, $41; coal; $40, bread, $36 Gas, $32; Milk, $28.16s; drapers, $19.16s.9p; P. Thomson, $11.1s total of $1000.5s.3d. A creditor stated that he would like the meeting adjourned to allow of Mr Roche being present and on his motion, this was decided on. Friday next being fixed as the date.
(Reference National Library of NZ Newspaper Archives “The Southland Times” Saturday October 19 1901)
Please note that Small & Co was Hardware advertisers and Taylor and Co was regular advertisers and direct importers for millinery, umbrellas & clothing material. There was no report of this meeting was noted in a close reading of the Saturday 26 October or Saturday 2
nd November issues, or a browse of other newspapers. Up to the 13
November 1901 there were reports of three other creditors meetings for different bankrupts. Mrs King took over the running of the Boarding House and the Wanted column appeared of “The Southern Times” Newspaper reads:
WANTED Mrs King begs to announce that she has taken over Union Boarding House, Dee Street and hopes by strict attention to the wants of the Public to merit a share of their support.

I have come to the conclusion that after Charles TAYLOR deserted his wife Agnes she left Dunedin and settled in Invercargill and began living with Frederick SINCOTT and became known as Adelaide Alice SINCOTT. She ran the Union Boarding House and looked after Florence SINOCTT. After Agnes (Adelaide) was declared bankrupt I believe Frederick SINCOTT deserted her as well as his own daughter Florence who later became known as Florence Stella TAYLOR. 1905 Wairau Electoral roll = Frederick SINCOTT resident Seddon occupation Wagoner (Reference National Library of NZ microfiche of NZ Electoral rolls)
The only records of Frederick after 1905 were 1919 Wellington Central Electoral Roll. Agnes’s son Edward Charles TAYLOR married Minnie WILBY on 13 July 1902 in Lyttleton, Christchurch. Edward recorded his parents as mother Ada TAYLOR formerly LEEKIE and father Edward TAYLOR occupation Horse Breaker. When Edward TAYLOR (widower) married again in 1933 he recorded his parents as Adelaide Alice formerly LECKIE and Charles TAYLOR occupation Butcher. (Reference Registrar Generals Office Lyttleton District 1902 folio 4200 item 46)
I have been told by some of Agnes’s descendant’s three different stories about the death of Agnes husband Charles Thomas TAYLOR. The first story stated Charles died by falling from a horse in Balclutha around 1906. Agnes (formerly LECKIE) TAYLOR had a cousin who died from falling off a horse in Wellington. The second story stated that Charles died from falling rocks while working in the Otira Gorge between Christchurch and Greymouth. Agnes (formerly LECKIE) TAYLOR’s uncle, James BOYLE, died from falling rocks at Britamart Point Auckland. The third story was that Charles TAYLOR died from drowning in the Dunedin Harbour. Agnes grandmother Ellen (formerly FANNING) BOYLE was believed to have drowned in Auckland harbour but it was actually another Fencible soldier’s wife. When the ships surgeon’s records were located it recorded that Ellen had died aboard the ship after the birth of a daughter while the ship was anchored in the Auckland Harbour. What do I conclude from these three different family stories well if Charles TAYLOR deserted Agnes these stories may have been created to protect her children. When Agnes the supposed widow moved to Invercargill and lived with Frederick SINCOTT the family may have created additional stories to protect her good name. When stories are handed down from generation to generation the truth fades and we may never know the true story. What we do know is that to Agnes’s her three children were Edward Charles TAYLOR, Edith Emily TAYLOR and Florence Stella TAYLOR. Agnes and Florence continued to live in the Invercargill region until 12 February 1905. By using the school records we are able to trace the movements of Agnes and Florence. I locate various Invercargill rolls recording an Agnes TAYLOR but the same details appeared long after our Agnes left the region and after she died. Unfortunately I have been unable to locate any New Zealand Electoral Rolls recording our Agnes TAYLOR. I did locate a directory recording Adelaide TAYLOR but I do not think this is our lady even though she used this Christian name.

Many early death registrations recorded incorrectly information due to family members being upset while submitting the information and/or giving out incorrect information and/or the undertakers hearing, interpreting then recording the wrong information. On the death registration Agnes’s living issue were recorded incorrectly and her daughter Edith was not recorded. When Agnes died her daughter Edith Emily TRAINOR was living at Park Street, Gore with her family and Agnes’s son Edward Charles TAYLOR was living at Denniston with his family. Florence must have stayed with someone when her mother Agnes was admitted to Hospital on 08 March 1907. What happened to Florence after the death of her mother on 12 June 1907 I do not know? Florence Stella TAYLOR would have been 14 years old at the time. I locate a 1919 Wellington Central Electoral roll for Frederick SINCOTT and a later burial at Karori cemetery Wellington. I searched but cannot locate confirmation about what happened to Agnes’s husband Charles Thomas TAYLOR. The 1922 Christchurch electoral roll recorded a Charles TAYLOR address 52 Clifton Street occupation Builder but I do not think this is our Charles Thomas TAYLOR (Reference National Library of NZ Alexander Turnbull Library microfiche of New Zealand Electoral Rolls)
Time and further research may give more answers regarding the life of Agnes formerly LECKIE her husband Charles Thomas TAYLOR and partner Frederick SINCOTT.

TAYLOR miscellaneous information
Please note that over the years I have transcribed various TAYLOR information that does not belong to our genealogy so I have placed the details below as it may belong to other TAYLOR genealogies and assist others in their research.
I was told that our Charles TAYLOR died in a fire along with two other different stories regarding his death. To begin with I thought the details below belonged to our Charles but after further research I realised this was a different Charles. I have placed the information below just in case someone else makes the same mistake as I first did.

#The Press Friday December 07 1894 - FATAL FIRE - A MAN BURNED TO DEATH - At 12.20 last night an alarm of fire was given from the box near the Caversham Hotel. On the Brigade reaching the spot it was found that the fire had originated in a small two-roomed house at the rear of Robinson’s blacksmith’s shop, St Asaph Street. The Lichfield street chemical kept the fire in check until a stream of water was got on from one of the steamers. In a few moments the fire was got under, being confined to the interior of the building. The shanty was occupied by a man named T Upton, a single man, who is well known in the city, and who is in the habit of having people staying with him. Last night he was in company at the house
with A E McGurr, C Taylor, and a man whose name is unknown. On the Brigade reaching the spot Upton was outside, and said that though he had managed to get out, he did not know whether there was any one else there. C Taylor, who had evidently got out of the house, was found at the back in a dazed condition. His hands, back, and neck were badly burned, and he was at once removed to the hospital. On being questioned he could not say who was in the house at the time of the fire. He knew that there were some men were drinking and smoking, but he did not know who they were. On the Brigade proceeding to examine the ruins after the fire was put out the body of a man was found in an upright position sitting near the bunk. The face was burned, but several who saw the remains identified the body as that of E McGurr. The unfortunate man had been engaged in farming at Wakanui, where also he took part in racing. He had been in town for some weeks under medical treatment for his feet. He was a friend of Upton’s and they were constantly together. Upton stated that McGurr was with him in the house last night, so that there is very little doubts as to the identity of the body found. McGurr is a widower, a man over fifty years of age, and has relatives in Christchurch. The body was removed to the Caversham Hotel, where it waits an inquest. There is no insurance on the building, and it is probable that the fire was accidentally caused by the men, who were smoking and drinking. C Taylor, the man who was taken to the Hospital, is a single man between thirty and forty years of age, a shoemaker by trade. He has relatives in Christchurch. The injuries he has received, though somewhat serious, are not likely to prove fatal = Reference Alexander Turnbull Library microfilm 16999 Oct-Nov with part December #The Press newspaper Saturday December 08 1894 - Fires - The man Taylor who was taken to the Hospital died about 9.am yesterday in that instituted from the effects of the injuries received at the fire on Friday morning.
