Who is Charles Dickens?• Charles John Huffam

Dickens was a writer and social critic. He is responsible for creating some of the worlds most renowned books and fictional characters.

Why is he so Famous?• Dickens created some of

the most famous and memorable novels and short stories, still read and enjoyed by the general public today. He first rocketed to fame with the serial publication of The Pickwick Papers in 1836.

When did he live/write?• Dickens was born

on the 7th of February 1812 and died on the 9th of June 1879 aged 58. His writing career started in 1836, and he continued to write all most all of his life.

Where did he live?

• Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England where he lived most of his life, however travelled on occasions. He died at Gad’s Hill Place.

What did he Write?

• Charles Dickens wrote many of the famous English novels still renowned today. These include Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, Bleak House, Pickwick Papers, David Copperfield and A Tale of Two Cities.

How do People Remember Him?

• We still remember Dickens through reading, understanding, and discussing his works. Charles Dickens’s novels give us a ‘snapshot’ of his era, and give us messages and morals on issues such as poverty and charity.

Dickens in Australia• Although Charles Dickens was interested in ‘the land down-

under’, he never visited Australia. He was also instrumental in publishing multiple articles about Australia in his Household Words weekly periodical.
