Charles was born on November 22nd, 1890. de Gaulle was born in Lille, a northern France
city.
Date and Place of Birth
Lille, France, Charles de Gaulle’s birthplace.
Charles’s father was a teacher. de Gaulle was raised to seek revenge on
Germany after France’s war with Prussia, a nation that would later make up most of Germany.
He was taught at an early age to value his long family history of fighting for France.
Childhood and Family
Charles began classes at Saint-Cyr, the best French military academy in 1909.
de Gaulle was called “the Big Asparagus” by classmates because of his height. He was 6’ 5.
He excelled at Saint-Cyr and he graduated from it in 1912.
