Charity Week for Orphans and Needy Children is a volunteer-led campaign of Islamic Relief.

The ultimate vision of Charity Week is to become a vehicle to inspire Muslim youth to become active, socially engaged and united upon Islam.

  • 3 Charity Week Annual Report 2019

We live in interesting times. They are often dark times; when we see people who live comfortable lives suddenly brought to disruption by war. They are desperate times; where famine has destroyed communities and rendered people helpless. And they are dangerous times; when identities are demonised and people are targeted just for who they are.

In early 2019, Charity Week began its course. We sought to look further and think bigger, with the conviction that there are good - and effective - people out there. All we need to do is bring them together: to unite them.

Harnessing the imaginations of thousands of volunteers, we wanted Charity Week 2019 to be a time when each one of us realises that the true super-power that is needed in today’s world is the belief that we can bring change to current times. Instead of waiting for superheroes, we embraced the idea that each one of us has the ability to affect huge change when we work together in a coordinated and united manner.

This Annual Report seeks to showcase the result of our efforts to bring different people together to help some of the most vulnerable and unheard people on the planet; orphans and children in need.

We are indebted to all the volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the year to make Charity Week a reality and we wish to thank the Islamic Relief Offices in the UK, Canada, Germany, USA, South Africa and Education Above All in Qatar for supporting us.

We owe our thanks to Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala for facilitating all our efforts and achievements. May He accept it from us, Ameen.

Building the TeamsTraining new volunteers to become part of the Charity Week Team has its own flavour in each country, but our annual theme helps to create a unifying thread. The theme this year was Superheroes with the case study to feed the imagination being Marvel Studios.

Mar - April 2019Training delivered to 450+ CW Team members at eight events in all six participating countries

Sep - Oct 2019More than 20 events where CW Teams delivered training to participating institutions

Presentation Topics • WHAT IF MARVEL DID

CW? Taking lessons from the Avengers; developing our characters, connecting our strengths behind one purpose and having fun whilst doing serious work.

    • THE WAKANDA WAY: Discussing the need to move away from “Superman Syndrome” towards the “Wakanda Way” in order to help our beneficiaries. Rather than living along nationalist lines, we talked about the aim to share benefits to all of humanity and to structure our work so that we are not limited in our choices of who to help.

    • THE MARVEL STUDIOS VISION: the need to rebuild a broken ummah which is full of “superheroes” but all working separately. Just like Kevin Feige brought Marvel characters back under one umbrella, we talked about the need to overlook all that divides us and bring our ‘superheroes’ under one banner.

Resource DistributionWith the growing scale of the project, “resource packing” has started to become an event in and of itself. Volunteers gather together to bundle, wrap and pack t-shirts, posters and leaflets for institutions to use. Wherever possible, resources are re-used. Information from previous years is used to avoid over-production.

Where There’s a WillPeople find it difficult to traverse a country as huge as Canada. Alberta is a 4-5 hour flight from Toronto, where the CW Canada Team was based. Yet this year, Alberta established a CW team, signed up three institutions and had their first annual dinner with zero budget. The driving force? A 16 year old volunteer.

For the Orphans, TwiceA painting took centre stage in a dramatic bidding war at a US university. Theatrics took them into a girls vs. boys bidding war: neither wished to back down.

Eventually the deadlock was broken: both sides united with their bids and the painting would be donated to an orphan. That one painting sold for $15,300.

Humble BeginningsUnity has to start somewhere - and sometimes it begins between friends; two friends from Liverpool Hope wanted to raise money for CW but had never taken part before. They swiftly organised a week of non-stop bake sales. With no large events, they managed to raise over £700 - planting a seed for future success.

Food, Fun & FamilyAnxiety, insomnia, butterflies in the stomach... not for exams but for Charity Week! On the 24th October, the Qatar CW Team organised the Inter Uni Event, gathering volunteers from 10 institutions in one room - with their proud parents. They hosted various booths, from mojito making to solving puzzles.

    A Week of Fundraising

For one week in October, volunteers from across the world came together to raise money for orphans and needy children. Here are some of their stories:

The online Charity Week presence was consolidated across platforms this year onto single international pages. Owing to the dynamics of the project’s growth, the presence of Charity Week online was divided between regions and countries. In 2019, the Marketing Team worked to coordinate the representation of all our participating countries to maintain our grassroots publicity yet showcase our united cause.

In The Face of Disaster “We had two popcorn machines. Everything was going so well... then suddenly someone stumbled upon the cables and both machines crashed down. There was oil and popcorn everywhere! But: we acted fast and got popcorn from a nearby supermarket. Ok, so it wasn’t fresh but the show went on!”

    Anita Dacic, Germany

Beavertails“In Edmonton, Alberta, volunteers at the University of Alberta fundraised in the most Canadian way possible; in the cold, selling the infamous Canadian Pastry, Beavertails! These are pastries, resembling the shape of a beaver’s tail, covered in various toppings including chocolate!”

Together As One“As my WhatsApp was flooded with images from around the world, I couldn’t distinguish which ones were from Qatar or UK or Germany or USA or Canada. You know what that means when we come together for a single cause? Any difference just disappears. It’s just not there anymore..”

    Mehreen Alam, Qatar

Special SuperheroesIn the north of England, Purple Patch, a non-profit organisation for those with special needs, participated for the first time ever! They spent a day baking and carefully decorating cakes to sell for their very own Charity Week stalls, embodying the vision we hold so dear!

    Aminah AbdelHamid, UK

The Fine Art of Fundraising “An art auction at City College was one of the most exciting events that I’ve ever been to. It started off with a warm welcome and an amazing lecture. And then the auction began. Paintings were being sold for staggering prices, some of them for over $3000 USD. The night ended with an unbelievable $28,000 USD being raised, one of the proudest moments in our four years participating in Charity Week.”

  • SOUTH AFRICA, SUDAN, GAZA & PAKISTANOrphan Sponsorship£90,500 Charity Week continues to support existing one-to-one orphan sponsorships across the world. This year we have been able to provide 20 more sponsorships in South Africa and Sudan. These funds provide food, clothing education and healthcare.

    ORPHAN SPONSORSHIP

20 Charity Week Annual Report 2019

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the completion of projects funded by the Charity Week 2019 campaign have been delayed. This has been due to unavoidable reasons, such as government prescribed social distancing and lockdown measures in the countries where projects are being delivered. As soon as circumstances are deemed safe for both those delivering and receiving aid, these projects will be continued. Adjustments in delivery may be necessary to ensure the safety of all those involved.

Project costs are given in equivalences of GBP, conversions correct as of November 2019

Projects that Charity Week fund:Encourage an exit strategy from the cycle of poverty for the most vulnerable members of society; orphans and needy children who simply have no other safety net

Provide a sustainable solution that allows communities to develop their own systems to help vulnerable children out of poverty and become functional members of their home community.

Providing emergency relief in where lives are affected immediately by natural and man-made disasters, including life-saving food, water, shelter and medicine.

  • Charity Week Annual Report 2019EMERGENCY RESPONSE

    HEALTHCARE

IDLIB, SYRIANew Wave of Displacement £23,300Idlib saw a second wave of displaced arriving in the city from December 2019. This was on top of the 1.5 million displaced already taking refuge there. Money raised from Charity Week has contributed to providing vital materials to help children survive the harsh circumstances, including emergency shelter, food, clothing and medical care.

GAZASupporting special education services for children with disabilities£92,900This project helps 500-700 disabled children and their parents, improving 10 centres of special education and a total of 50-70 teaching staff.1.5% children in Palestine are disabled and just over half of them live in families that need financial assistance. This project will support necessary rehabilitation works, providing centres with adequate, sufficient and sustainable resources, furniture and equipment. In addition protocols and manuals will be updated and taught in consultation with specialised experts in this field.

  • Charity Week Annual Report 2019

GAZASupporting Comprehensive Care For Child Cancer Patients£500,000This project provides cancer care equipment and medication. Rather than separating children from their families in an area where it is notoriously difficult to travel freely, developing a hospice-at-home system helps families cope with the illness of children. It is a step towards a broader aim to create a unified cancer care system in Gaza. Furthermore, educating clinicians and the general public about the importance of cancer and end of life care are part and parcel of this far-reaching and pioneering scheme.

Alleviating the Effects of Safe Water Scarcity£36,400With the deteriorating economic conditions in Gaza. children’s well-being is threatened in multiple ways. Not only are there water shortages, the water they do have access to is often considered undrinkable because of high amounts of chlorides and nitrates. This project focuses on the following components:• Capacity building through updating and making print copies available

of a Child Health Manual and conducting training sessions for teachers

    • A health awareness program for teachers, children and the community

    • Health and nutrution interventions, including medications, minor surgeries, hearing aids and nutritional supplements

    • Provision of tools and equipment for Kindergartens to rehabilitate hygiene infrastructures

PAKISTANEradicating Hepatitis Programme£200,0006,500 orphans and children in poverty will be assessed for Hepatitis, and those suffering with the disease will be provided the appropriate medical care. The further spread of the disease will be mitigated with a tailor-made awareness campaign focusing on at-risk communities. Working with community groups for local solutions will help ensure that the spread of the disease can be slowed and eventually eradicated, inshaAllah.

    HEALTHCARE

  • EDUCATION

QATARAddressing Inequalities in Access to Education £28,600An estimated 4,000 children are without access to education in Qatar. Mainly from immigrant communities where parents have a language barrier, these children lack the financial support to afford education and the transport to even get to school. This project will identify and seek to provide a holistic solution to get children enrolled into appropriate schools and with the means to travel there. Schools are equipped to help children catch up on missed curricula and quickly join their peers in the correct age group.

For families living in poverty living in Qatar, Higher Education Scholarships will enable young people to cement their contribution to society by sponsoring them to join higher education courses. Priority will be given to orphans, students with disabilities and those with refugee status.

NIGEREnhancing Primary Health and Education for Children in Tillabery Region£100,000Three classrooms, toilets and school equipment will be provided to a school in the impoverished region of Tillabery.

SUDANRehabilitation of School Facilities & WASH (Water & Sanitation) Facilities£84,000This project will impact more than 500 students by improving basic learning and enhancing the recreational environment. Facilities such as classrooms, teacher’s offices, conference rooms, school theatre, playground, kitchen , TV and audio system and school kits will be rehabilitated. Twenty teachers will be trained and hired and clubs formed to help conduct education awareness sessions in the community.

GAZAHigher Education Scholarships£9,500Helping Syrian and Palestinian refugees - as well as young people from host communities - scholarships will allow greater access to higher education in surrounding countries. The project aims to support 6,345 students from impoverished backgrounds, encouraging them towards professional and skilled paths of study, helping them to become productive members of society.

  • 24 Charity Week Annual Report 2019

Charity Week is not just about charity: it is about unity. Bringing the ummah together has always been our measure of success - in the past, in 2019 and in our years ahead inshaAllah.

We thank Allah for having given us the superpower of safety, the superpower of security and the superpower of faith. With these great powers comes the great responsibility to continue our work.

    Conclusion

Have they not travelled in the land,

and seen what was the end of those

before them, and they were superior

to them in power? Allah is not such

that anything in the heavens or in

the earth escapes Him. Verily, He is

    All -Knowing, All -Powerful.

© 2019 Charity Week for Orphans & Needy Children

This brochure is made from 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Recycle it by passing it on to everyone you know and spreading the message of unity.

    Charity Week shows us what

    unity can create,

A year of hard work, you’ve

    achieved something great.

    So listen up International

    Annual Dinner, you’re in for

    treat

As we look back on each

    region’s truly spectacular

    week

First up, we have the titans of

    the North

    Filled with the Mancunian

    community doing good of

    course

    A 20k step challenge, cleaning

    graveyards and streets

And with a baby in tow, wow

    what a memory to keep

And let’s take it all the way up

    to Leeds,

    Who stacked and stacked all

    those good deeds

Auctioned two old lotas for a

    thousand pounds,

    A moment to make every

    Asian feel proud.

    We saw Sheffield Hallam

    with international food night

    success

    Uniting all cultures, only

    Wakanda was left

    All these institutions keep the

    north true to their name

    Great, truly great, giants

    worthy of fame

Next up, we have the ultimate

    North you could say

Yes, our Super Scots, super in

    all kinds of ways

    Their bonnie wee lasses and

    laddies you see,

    Took Charity Week to heights

    Ben Nevis would envy

    Wee STAMSA set trends with

    interfaith dinners,

    A small isoc? No problem-

    they united, they’re winners

    Talking of small but mighty,

    NIA take the gold

Their first ever CW & they

    inspired us all

    One Scottish school really be

doing the most with their time

    spent

Holding not one, not two but

    -aye-17 events!

    Battling trivia with teachers,

partying with a pakora or two,

    Rivalling the biggest

    universities, it’s Woodfarm

    High School

    The PlayArea takeover by

    schoolkids was a pure sight

    to see

    They Hired an indoor play

    centre & got 200 attendees

    The Loch Ness monster is

big but these CW hearts are

    bigger

    The Super Scots smashed it,

how they did it? Go figure!

    We’ve heard the myths, the

    stories, urban legends and

    chatter

    Claiming a hidden Ka’bah

    at Snowdon summit where

    Muslims gather

A CW pilgrimage if you will,

    every October without fail

    And this year, even Keele’s

    Garfield hiked up the trail

Which bring us to the biggest,

    no massivest, region of them

    all,

    The Midlands -home of collab

    events-true unity for sure,

    Beauchamp, DMU and

    Leicester together held a

    500-man dinner

    Don’t forget Oxford and Oxford

    Brookes, shows unity’s the

    winner

    AR U-nity shone through in

    their fingerprint banner,

    Al Furqan Primary amazed

    with their hype and CW

    manner

    With teachers braving Brecon

    and shaving their heads

    Shows why the Midlands is

massive and how they get that

    bread

    Heading further down, no not

    London, wait just a second

    We hit sunny south, standing

    out don’t you reckon?

    Surrey ISOC reached out to

    the younger generation

    Helping them debate CW

    projects and collecting

    donations

Not one to let others feel

    FOMO from South’s big

    regional event

    Southampton sent cars to

Surrey to pick up their team so

    they could attend

    That southern hospitality

    really charms like no other

And what a nice act of unity for

    your fellow sister and brother

Let’s head to the littest region,

    in the kingdom of dragons

    Wales and West United,

    making waves on the Charity

    Week wagon

    From IR Bristol’s own bonanza

    of bowling

    To a new sport with

    Gloucester- an event

    trampolining!

Bangor took part from the dark

    depths of Wales

    And Swansea took the crown

for holding so many bake sales

This next story tugs on our

    heartstrings just a little,

    Showing what CWs about, it

    exemplifies the vision

    Sadly, Worcester could not

    take part in Charity Week

    When Gloucester heard, they

    did everything in their reach

    Including kindly taking them in

    under their wing

    Collabing on events so they

    could start Charity Week-ing

Now we move on to the

    hometown of IAD,

    The biggest hypemen-

    London you’re legendary

    Your creativity and hype, you

smash the ceiling year on year

    With a jaw-dropping week,

let’s see what you did here

    Far away in south London,

    what do we see

    An amazing Georges mural,

    wait, is that a Banksy?

    Imperial’s trailers been tipped

as the next big Oscar win

    Spielberg could never, just

    look at that editing

    Barts created an escape room,

I think there’s still people in

    While SOAS and Kings

    empowered their spoken

    worders within,

    Woodhouse and biryani, a

    combo that can’t be beat

    Don’t forget London

    Southbank with all their tasty

    treats

    Auctions were madder, the

    rooms were buzzing still

    Setting world records for

    bananas at UCL

    Westminster, big shoutout for

    setting the lota trend

    Not forgetting Cake Wars, who

    knew baked goods were so

    intense

And before we end, we have to

    highlight our youngest MVPs

    Our Schools and Colleges

    across the country

    While we replace lectures with

    donut selling galore,

    These amazing kids do school,

    Charity Week and more!

    Manchester Muslim Prep, you

    guys are absolutely super

    The cub scouts in Wales,

    you’re right CW troopers

    Leicester Islamic Academy

    really took it next level

    Creating their own

    superheroes, time to ring

    Marvel

    And Cardiff Muslim Primary

    went above and beyond

    With Nerf wars, talent shows

    and more second to none

    You’re the next generation,

    and we just couldn’t be

    prouder

To pass on the baton and

    watch you all flower

And last little shout out to the

    CW Team

    From national to regional, you

    made this Charity Week

    Helping every event &

    institution with the utmost

    decorum & hype

We know you all had the best

    week of your life

Now the capes are retired, the

    super mission is complete

May you all be rewarded for all

    your good deeds

    You achieved incredible

    things, each Charity Week

    hour,

With all your effort, we united

    our powers!
