OUR GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT

My Brother Knights, I hope everyone had a very blessed Easter season and that the Easter Bunny was good to you. The Council continues to achieve Star Council Status and all we need is four new members to reach our goal. Remember it is our obligation to ask our Catholic brothers to become members of the Knights of Columbus. Please make every effort to recruit a new member. Let us continue to grow the Council. We have the opportunity to receive $4.50 for each billable member on our roster if we achieve Star Council. It is our goal and I ask for your help. Congratulations to Council 8980. We celebrate our 30th Anniversary as a Council on April 13th. The month of April was very active. I want to thank Brother John Olsen for his leadership in the Easter Egg Hunt. The kids had a great time looking for all the eggs and it was well attended. Three Brother Knights achieved their 3rd Degree on April 11th in Goose Creek, South Carolina . Congratulations to James Wood, Kevin Fitzmaurice and Matt McGuire. The Council participated in the Special Olympics on April 24, 2015 by manning two water tents. It was wonderful to see all the athletes compete. I want to thank John Fry and John Blair for coordinating this event. Our day of Recollection at the Shrine of our Lady in Kingstree, South Carolina was a success. I want to thank Ken Hein for his leadership and a big thank you to Fr. Stanley Smolenski for Mass and his wonderful words on St. Joseph.

The State Convention was attended by Jim Adee and Gil Cushing as delegates representing Council 8980. The first part of business in the June Council meeting will be the Council Elections. A slate of officers has been determined and will be presented at the May Council meeting. According to our By-Laws any one can be nominated from the floor. Elections will be held on June 4, 2015. Any third Degree Knight in good standing may seek office in the Council. I encourage all of you to serve

as an officer. The Council needs new fresh ideas and leadership. I want to thank PGK John Fry and his nominating committee for their work on the election process. Please remember to sign up for our Council Golf Tournament to be held on June 6, 2015 at the International Club. This will be our last fund raiser for this fraternal year. DGK Tim McGraw and his committee are working very hard on making this tournament a huge success. Golf, good food and great fellowship are in order. Let us pray for sunshine and no rain. The Council kicks off Operation Hope at St. Michael Church on May 16, 2015 and will continue thru the weekend of October 30th. Please sign up to work a few shifts and support this wonderful program. Please remember to pray for all deceased brother Knights especially Brother Bernard J. McNellis who went to be with our Lord on April 12, 2015. God Bless, Vivat Jesus

Congratulations to: Knight of the Month – April 2015 –is: James Adee

The Knight of the Month for April has been a Knight for six years. He is a current officer in the Council and has held two officer positions in the last three years. He is appointed by the Supreme Knight. His duties are many. He is a valuable asset to the Council and he keeps me out of trouble with State and Supreme. Although entitled to compensation for his numerous responsibilities, he elects not to accept that. A man with strong Catholic values and I am proud to be his brother. The Knight of the Month is our Financial Secretary James Adee.

2015 Special Olympics of Horry County Spring Games

Friday 04/24/15 was truly a Special day for the Special Olympics of Horry County Spring Games and the Special Olympic Athlete.

The weather, after causing a one week delay, cooperated superbly and the event started with the opening ceremony which included a large caravan of police cars, motorcycles (Sirens Blaring) and a dozen Myrtle Beach Police Officers entering the stadium following an eleven mile run along with Special Olympic Representative, Christopher Skipper, and a Special Olympic Athlete carrying the “Special Olympic” torch. The event was a total success as the athletes were excited about competing. Our Knights operated the Water Tents distributing water and bananas to the Special Athletes.

From all the Special Olympians I am passing along a Big Hug and Thank You to the following Knights, Wives, and Friends that volunteered for this “Special” event.

Again Thank You to Jim White, Gil Cushing, Joan Cushing, Ken Pankowski, Don Maher, Diane Walsh, Ruth Miles, Bob Leewe, John Luse, Carol Luse, Robert Jordan, Rick Fox, Tim McGraw and John Fry

The Knights of Columbus - Council 8980 truly loves and cares about our “SPECIAL CHILDREN”.

Congratulations!

Easter Egg Hunt. I would like to thank all my brother knights for helping with stuffing and “hiding” the eggs. I hope that you know this event would never have been possible without your help and support. I hope that you had at least as much fun as I did. There were about 100 very excited children with their parents at the council’s Easter Egg hunt. We had 4 age groups: 0-3 Years, 4-6 Years, 7-9 Years, 10 Years and up. Two knights “supervised” each age group to make sure no one “helped” themselves to eggs from another age group. From the start at 9:00 AM until they were finished about 5 minutes later they found about 900 eggs. Special thanks to Don Maher and Emil Silvoy who sat at the Prize table and put smiles on many children. One lesson learned from this year is that the parents will be asked to be there at least 10 minutes before start, and also the age groups will be changed so that 10 Years will be the oldest. There were a couple of parents that missed it by a few minutes and the looser were the children and there were only a handful of the oldest children. We let the children keep the eggs this year since they were getting to the point where they were hard to close so we will be buying new for next year.

Easter Parking Report: (Ken Pankowski)

Because of the volunteers from the Knights and some from our church, the Easter Parking went exceedingly well...and some said it was the best yet. Because of some of the changes in parking for Handicapped, and because people are just following directions, there were no major foul-ups, accidents or other mishaps. There might be a slight change in Mass times for next Easter to facilitate the ease of transition from one mass to another. The weather was great and did not play a role in the ability to park cars anywhere on the campus. Thanks again to all those who helped in any way, and for those who went the "extra mile"..a BIG THANKS to you.

FFAAIITTHHFFUULL NNAAVVIIGGAATTOORR’’SS MMEESSSSAAGGEE . Sir Knights of Assembly 2107 I have been told that April Showers will bring May Flowers. Based on the amount of rain received so far this year we should have plenty of Flowers for the month of May. This also means that elections of our new Officers for the Assembly will be upon us too. Sir Knight Jim White and his nomination committee are working hard to accomplish this task. It looks like we have a good slate of new Officers to continue the business of our Assembly. So anyone that would like to get involved should submit their name to the Nominating Committee as soon as possible. Article II – Elections states that all Officers shall be elected at the first regular meeting in May of each year. The Officers shall hold office for a term of one year, beginning July 1st. As a side note a copy of the new Bylaws are now available. Please get your copy from myself or the Controller, David Kreibel. I would also like to thank our Trustees, Sir Knights, Bernie Lodrick, Mike Urso, and Richard Rogers for their input in getting the bylaws updated. The Assembly Social will be over by the time that you get this newsletter. I can assure that our Captain John Kokoska may sure that everyone that attended this event, had a good time. Our Honor Guard Captain and his Team of Sir Knights have been very busy in April and again in May. Commander Donald Maher will give you the details in his report. The Honor Guard will be participating in the Patriotic Parade in Myrtle Beach on May 16th and also the Memorial Day Services at the Convention Center also in Myrtle Beach on May 25th. So come on out and support your Honor Guard. On June 10th we will be conducting a Quilts of Valor Ceremony in PAC Hall at 6 PM. This ceremony will be to honor the Military Veterans in our Counsel and Assembly for their service to our Country. If you have never seen one of these Ceremonies, come on out and support your fellow Veterans. You will be glad that you did. If anyone would like to participate and has not submitted an application to me, and would like to be so honor, please do so immediately. As you can see, ours is a very busy Assembly and we need everyone’s support to successfully complete our missions. So pitch in and pick up some of those May flowers along the way. .

ROSARY Current Month and last month info

Current month Mark your calendar for Thursday May 21st at 6:00 pm. This will be the last monthly Rosary for the current K of C year. Being that this date us just a few days prior to the celebration of Memorial Day, the Rosary will be led by Deacon Don Efken and will be a Patriotic Rosary. Immediately following the Rosary we will have a flag folding presentation by members of our 4th Degree Assembly. This is a very impressive presentation which the

team has done for several local veterans groups, nursing homes and schools. It is a special treat for all of us to witness this program. Once again in keeping with our Memorial Day theme. Then following the Flag presentation, we will go to PAC Hall once again for some social time. We will hear from Ellen and Church Dekleva. They will tell us about their latest trip with a medical group, to Guatemala. They assisted in treating many people in need of medical care. Additionally, there were able to see the new Ultra-Sound machine in one of the clinics. This devise was donated by the Knights of Columbus right here in South Carolina. This will be a full evening of prayer and information. Make every attempt to attend with you wife and other family members. Last month Over 40 members and wives attended our Monthly Rosary on Thursday, April 16th. Following the Rosary, we went to PAC Hall for social time. Thank you to Jack and Rosalie Durst for setting up our tasty treats each month. During the social time we heard a presentation my Eva Gaddy, as student consular at Soccastee High School. She oversees a program at the school that takes care of students who are in need. Here is an outline of some of those needs.

‘Needy Students’ Programs

These programs are Year Round 1. Needy Scholarship: throughout the year there are students in need of clothing. The school has a bank

that supplies funds to actually take the students to the store and help them select appropriate clothing. 2. Boxes or Bags of Toiletries for boys or girls (List is below) Cash Donations Soap or Body wash Washcloth or Scrubby Bath Towel Shampoo and Conditioner Deodorant Toothbrush and Toothpaste Razors and Shave Cream or Gel Cologne/perfume Comb or Brush Hair accessories Mouthwash/floss Lotion/powder

***These need to be full-size items, not travel size.

If you can, bring one or more of these items to the next meeting. Any questions please contact John or Carol Luse 843-421-3811 (or) 843-421-3812

DAY of RECOLLECTION On Wednesday April 22nd, 17 members of our Council went to the Shrine of Our Lady of South Carolina in Kingstree for a Day of Recollection led by our own member, Fr. Stanley Smolenski, spma. The day was filled with information about the Shrine and how it started, about the church on wheel which was found after being in an unknown place for many years and spiritually learning about The Knights of Columbus: Men on a Mission with St. Joseph. Fr. Stan filled our day with inspirational talks. All that were in attendance came away feeling that the day was well spent. One of Fr. Stan’s points was that we all made a choice when we got out of bed that morning, were we going to stay home and do nothing or spend the day with St. Joseph at the Shrine. We all felt we made the right decision. FIRST DEGREE We will conduct a 1st Degree Ceremony on Thursday, May 14th in PAC Hall. The degree will start at 6:30 pm. Candidates will need to be there no later than 6:00 PM. Brothers, it is important that you make an effort to come to the degree as a witness. We need to show the new members that we support their joining our ranks and becoming one of us. We are holding the Degrees on Saturdays and off nights so that the regular meetings do not run over two hours in length. With this accommodating the membership in this way, we ask you to come forth and spend the hour or so to show support to the new members. The Degree team is working hard to prepare and present the ceremony in a most memorable fashion. They too ask your support.
