December Speakers Spotlight

The Mid-Michigan CPCU Society chapter has chosen The House of Promise to receive our annual December chari-

table donation! Thank you to everyone who participated in voting. Thanks also to Good Works Chair Lisa Martin and Cory Krause, who helped with researching local charitable

service organizations. The House of Promise was founded by Shari Montgomery,

former owner of the Pollack Glass Company. When she was first introduced to the subject of human trafficking, she re-alized her purpose was intended for something much

greater. From Shari’s vision a plan was developed to help survivors of human sex traf-

ficking. The House of Promise is a team aimed at raising awareness about hu-man sex trafficking and restoring the quality of life for young women and girls leaving the system.

Shari has agreed to join us at our December meeting to educate our members about the services provided by The House of Promise.

Please join us Dec. 21 to learn more about The House of Promise and to partic-

ipate in our charitable donation.

Ethics: The Core of the CPCU Code of Conduct

All CPCUs are required to abide by the canons, rules and guidelines of the CPCU Code of Professional Con-

duct.

Depending on when you completed your CPCU designation, these may not be fresh in your mind. If so,

take time to review them. Most of these come naturally to all of us.

Canon 1: Insurance professionals should endeavor to place the public interest above their own. Canon 2: Insurance professionals should seek continually to maintain and improve their professional

knowledge, skills, and competence. Canon 3: Insurance professionals should obey all laws and regulations, and should avoid any conduct or activity that would cause unjust harm to others.

Canon 4: Insurance professionals should be diligent in the performance of their occupational duties and should continually strive to improve the functioning of the insurance mechanism. Canon 5: Insurance professionals should aspire to raise the professional and ethical standards of the

insurance and risk management profession. Canon 6: Insurance professionals should strive to establish and maintain dignified and honorable rela- tionships with those whom they serve, with fellow insurance professionals, and with members of other

professions. Canon 7: Insurance professionals should assist in improving the public understanding of insurance and risk management.

Canon 8: CPCUs should honor the integrity of the CPCU designation and respect the limitations placed on its use. Canon 9: CPCUs should assist in maintaining the integrity of the CPCU Code of Professional Conduct.

In November, all CPCUs that were in attendance at the monthly luncheon were asked to publicly affirm their professional commitment to technical competence and ethical behavior. This is an excellent reminder

of how important ethics is in all we say and do.

“As a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, I shall strive at all times to live by the highest standards of professional conduct; “I shall strive to ascertain and understand the needs of others and place their interest above my

own; “And I shall strive to maintain and uphold a standard of honor and integrity that will reflect credit on my profession and on the CPCU designation.”
