CORNUBIACORNUBIAWe had an amazing day sailing on Cornubia. Not only sailing, but learning about the ecology of our local waters. Before going aboard we were shown and learnt about some of the variety of seaweeds to be found in the local waters and discovered some of the small creatures that live on it. With fascinating views taken through an underwater video camera of the life that exists on the sea bed right under our boat as it moved in the Marina. We saw fish, crabs and molluscs attracted to feeding on the bait put down to attract them.

The children enjoyed working together to hoist the sails (much bigger than the sails of a Hawk 20) and taking turns to helm this beautiful old wooden pilot cutter. They revised some of the most useful knots to be able to tie when working a boat like this. They worked together to collect sea water samples for scientific study to be observed and learn about the microscopic plankton that exists in the waters of Plymouth Sound and its importance in maintaining the local ecology.

INTRODUCING LOIS!INTRODUCING LOIS!

We have a new Chief Instructor that has joined Horizons. Her name is Lois Noyce and she introduces herself here:

Hello, I’m Lois a 22 year old from Leicestershire.I started off sailing when I was about 14 as a crew for my Dad. With being in the Midlands, we didn’t really have the luxury of choosing our sailing areas, so all of our sailing was done at the lovely Rutland Water. After completing my A Levels at school I wanted to gain some formal qualifications. I chose Rockley Watersports in Poole and gained my Dinghy,

Windsurfing and Powerboating instructor certificates. After gaining my qualifications, I then worked a summer season for Rockley in the south of France and came back to England and worked in Poole Harbour with them throughout the winter. In this winter season, I gained my Senior Instructor certificate and did another season in the South of France, this time as a Senior Instructor. After my second season, The Ahoy Centre, a sailing charity based on the Thames in London, were advertising for a permanent Senior Instructor role which I jumped at. In this role I was in charge of all youth and sailing programmes which included Sailability and our Shipmates programme which was tailored to giving under privileged youths the opportunity to get out on the water and work as a team. Unfortunately, after being there for approximately a year, I decided the London lifestyle was not for me as it was too urban and I am very much a country girl at heart. I am really looking forward to joining the team at Horizons and cannot wait to get stuck in.

JON'S RETIREMENTJON'S RETIREMENTAs some of you may or may not be aware Jon is retiring at the end of the month. Jon has been working for Horizons for over 15 years we can't just let him go without celebrating his dedication and commitment to Horizons. VOLUNTEER WINTER TRAININGVOLUNTEER WINTER TRAININGWednesday evening on water training has now come to an end. Many volunteers have made use of the time to practice their skills and gain more confidence in the various boats. Thanks to those who took part and helped with providing Safety cover. We are looking at putting together the winter training programme and would welcome any ideas or suggestions. What training would benefit you or help you to feel more confident when you are volunteering?

DEVON COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONDEVON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

On Saturday 10th September Devon Community Foundation (DCF) celebrated 20 years of supporting local communities at the historic Exeter Cathedral.Sam Hannaford and Trustee Alison Raynsford were asked to speak to the 300 guests about the importance of the funding Horizons Plymouth has received from DCF.Sam, speaking in public for the first time, spoke about how important coming to Horizons was for him and how he gained in confidence. Alison highlighted the way in which the money had been spent including the training of our marvellous volunteers, our motor boat, Pico’s and the list goes on. Their funding is vital in helping us to continue supporting disadvantaged and disabled young people to access water based activities, helping to boost confidence and raise aspirations.Horizons were one of only a handful of charities asked to speak because we were the recipient of the first ever grant from DCF. It was a terrific opportunity not only to thank DCF for their support but also to talk about the great work which Horizons’ staff and volunteers do with young people.

WINTER PROJECTWINTER PROJECTAs some of you may know, Saturday 22nd of October will be the last sailing session due to the generally rubbish weather of the English winter time. Instead of sailing though, we will be running a winter programme which will involve trips, activities and workshops to continue the cadets learning and interaction with each other. Last year for example, they went to the Rock Fish restaurant where they learnt where our fish comes from and how it is caught. They also got to have a very lovely portion of their Fish and Chips too! Other events included bowling, laser tag, and movie nights. If you can think of anything that the cadets would enjoy, please

don’t hesitate to get in contact with myself and we can try and arrange it. The winter youth project will start up on Thursday 10th November from 4:30 – 7:00. Details will be sent out via text each week to let you know what activities will be going ahead. Please let me know if your child would like to attend. Thank you, Lois.
