HOW TO BEAT THE SUMMER HEAT
When temperatures rise, it is important to know how to prevent heat-related ill-
nesses. The goal is to keep the body cool.
The following strategies can help:
staying indoors during the hottest part of the day
trying to stay in the shade when outdoors
drinking an extra 2–4 cups of water every hour while exposed
to high temperatures
taking frequent breaks when working or exercising outdoors on
hot days
wearing loose, light-colored clothing
using cooler water for showers and baths
wearing a wide-brimmed hat to shield the face from the sun
avoiding drinks that dehydrate, including those with caffeine or
alcohol
wearing breathable fabrics like cotton, rather than synthetic
blends
spending part of the day in an air-conditioned place, such as a
mall, library, or movie theater
No one should remain alone in a parked car in extremely hot weather. Doing so
could be especially dangerous for children and people aged 65 and older.
It’s natural to want to get out in the sun during warm summer days. It should also
be second nature to take steps to protect your skin from the sun when you go
outside.
Ultraviolet (UV) rays – from the sun and other sources like tanning beds – are the
#1 cause of skin cancer. Too much exposure can also cause sunburn, eye dam-
age, and premature wrinkles. But shielding your skin with clothing, broad-
spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, and stay-
ing in the shade can help lower your risk.
Choose the right sunscreen

level staff clinicians, 24 hours/365 days a year is available. Online services
are also available.

in-person counseling sessions per calendar year at no cost.
*All regular, full-time and part-time employees and their eligible dependents may
utilize the EAP services.
STRESS MANAGEMENT
In moderate doses, stress challenges you to do your best so you keep learning
and growing. But too much stress has a negative
effect on your work, mood and physical well-
being. You may be keeping your body in a state
of chronic stress if you often feel uptight or hos-
tile. Learn how to deal with stress constructively
and you can use it to meet life's challenges.
There are several flyers below that relate to
stress management for you to review.
American Behavioral June’s Newsletter, Balanced Living, discusses understanding
stress.
The Stress Management flyer has some stress relievers to ponder.
Traumatic Stress explains what it is and how to cope.
