T he cosmopolitan district of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and

Chelsea is famous for many things notably the annual carnival and the film of the same name starring Julia Roberts. It has in recent years grown to be a fashionable area for young people and has a vibrant nightlife with some of the best music bars in London. It quite uniquely possesses a bohemian spirit within a formal and affluent setting. Its close location to the famous Portobello Road Market makes it a highly desirable place to visit for shopping as small shops and stalls selling jewellery, antiques, clothing, art and souvenirs of London line the area.

THE ROUTEThe Crossrail route will run over 100km from Reading and Heathrow in the west, through new tunnels under central London to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

• The contract for Crossrail’s new high-capacity rolling stock was awarded in February 2014.• By the end of 2014, the vast majority of Crossrail’s 26 miles of tunnelling and the major

civil engineering works will be nearing completion.• In late 2014, Transport for London are due to confirm who has been awarded the

Crossrail train operating concession from 2015.

Major fit-out of stations and tunnels continues as does the major upgrade of the existing rail network for Crossrail services by Network Rail.

KEY FACTS• The first Crossrail services through central London will start in late 2018 – an estimated

200 million annual passengers will use Crossrail.• Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project – work started in May 2009 and there

are currently over 10,000 people working across over 40 construction sites.• Crossrail will bring an extra 1.5 million people to within 45 minutes of central London

and will link London’s key employment, leisure and business districts – Heathrow, West End, the City, Docklands – enabling further economic development.

• The total funding available to deliver Crossrail is £14.8bn.

Chard takes a closer look at Crossrail, the new service that will transform rail transport in London, increasing capacity by 10%, supporting regeneration and cutting journey times across the city.

2017 2018 2019

The first new Crossrail rolling stock will start to replace existing suburban trains between Liverpool Street and Shenfield.

In late 2018, the first Crossrail services will start through the central London tunnelled section.

In late 2019, the full Crossrail service will be operating from Heathrow and Reading to Abbey Wood and Shenfield.

STATIONSThere will be 40 Crossrail stations including 10 new stations at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Custom House, Woolwich and Abbey Wood.

DID YOU KNOW?Excavated material from the tunnels will be transported by rail and ship to Wallasea Island in Essex where it will be used to create a new 1,500 acre RSPB nature reserve.

NEW TRAINS• The new Crossrail trains will be over 200m long with modern, spacious

interior layouts.• There will be level boarding at central stations, wide interconnecting gangways

between carriages and seating layouts that meet the needs of passengers, including people with restricted mobility.

• On-train passenger information systems will deliver real-time travel information.

• Air conditioning will provide a comfortable travelling environment.• The new lightweight trains will be built with an emphasis on energy efficiency

and use of intelligent on-train energy management systems controlling lighting and air conditioning and will re-generate energy back into the supply when braking.

TRAVELLER BENEFITS• Crossrail will increase London’s rail capacity by 10% - the largest increase

since World War 2. This will reduce congestion and allow for more comfortable journey conditions.

• Congestion at many London Underground stations will be reduced, even for those that are not on the Crossrail route – such as Oxford Circus.

SouthKensington

South Kensington’s community is a mix of families and young professionals with a variety of

nationalities including Italians and Americans. The Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle provides language and

cultural classes, which supports the largest French community outside of France. Many of London’s famed institutions fall under South Kensington’s Exhibition Road, thus establishing

this neighbourhood as one of the most historic and visited in the entire city. The Royal Albert Hall, Natural History Museum, the V&A and the Royal College of Art are just some of the points of interest, whilst famous literary names including Beatrix Potter, Virginia Woolf and Sir J.M Barrie once called this place home.

Fulham is positioned on the left bank of the River Thames. Considered a leafy London

area it is home to several parks including Fulham Palace Gardens, Parsons Green and Eel Brook Common. Families are particularly enamoured with Bishops Park, which has just completed an £8 million refurbishment introducing London’s first urban beach to the neighbourhood. In addition residents of the area have welcomed the restoration and reopening of the ornamental lake and the café. Putney Bridge Tube Station provides a reliable link into the city centre and there is a great network of local schools.

Pimlico

Pimlico is known for its grand garden squares and impressive Regency architecture. It

could hardly be more central, with Westminster Abbey for a parish church and Tate Britain for the local

museum. You can walk to Soho in 20 minutes plus with its own tube station on the Victoria line and an abundance of buses it is very well connected. The area is separated from Belgravia to

the north by Victoria Railway Station, and bounded by the River Thames to the south, Vauxhall Bridge Road to the east and the former Grosvenor Canal to the west. Pimlico has seen extensive regeneration in recent years with the introduction of exclusive restaurants and residences giving it an interesting and vibrant social mix.

Bayswater borders the north of Hyde Park over Kensington Gardens and is therefore a

picturesque district and a popular spot for those touring the city. Bayswater Tube Station is the gateway for many visitors to this borough. From here a multitude of cafés, bars and restaurants can be found. This is also the most densely populated area for hotels with many of the striking stucco terraces providing tourist accommodation. A diverse community gives the place a cosmopolitan edge whilst its proximity to the Marble Arch and St Sophia’s Cathedral provides a hint of its historic past. Victorian terraces line the area with immaculate garden squares and well-kept streets making it a highly desired place to own property.
