Elements of Art: Line
• Continuous mark going in any direction
• Lines can show movement, texture, direction, and are expressive
Element of Art: Contrast
• The difference between two things, in this case light and shadow. Extreme contrasts in drawing are called
• Chiaroscuroan Italian term that means “light and dark.” In pictorial arts it refers to a gradual transition of values used to achieve the illusion of how light and shadow interact on three-dimensional forms.
Contrast
• Where is the light source?
• Light source is very important in chiaroscuro- creates ‘drama’
Space
• We want to create a dynamic composition-
• Having it ‘go off the page’ and making the viewer’s eye move around are much more interesting to look at.
Element of Art: Form
• Form refers to the 3D shape the object shows.
• In order to get a 3D form on a 2D surface, you must use shading techniques that trick the eye into seeing an actual form.
Techniques
- using dots to create value
- using lines to create value
- using crossed lines to create value
