Character: Curly

• Name: Curly

• Age: 19

• Gender : Male

• Race: Cypriot

• Class: Upper Class

General conventional stereotypes that may

potentially be given to the artist Curley may

stem mainly from his gender as well as his age.

The youth for over a number of years now have

been judged on their age this can date back to

evidence and actions of the mods and rockers

that stirred up what Cohen regarded as mass

‘moral panic’ in the late 1960 to early 1970’s.

This then lead to the implantation of harsher

controls from social agencies against young

people which arguably created a negative

effect of a self-fulfilling prophecy that began

to transpire into what has become to be known

as the ‘hegemony of the youth’. The dominant

stereotypes given to the youth range from :

Violent

Selfish

LazyCarless

‘Not going to achieve much’

Following Or Challenging Such

Representations?• In terms of young people being regarded as ‘not achieving much 'it is clearly

challenged in my media products due to the fact that this artist is in his late

teens and has managed to achieve such success in terms being able to follow

and succeeded the goals set in mind. Closely linking to the romanticised view

of achievements can be signified through the garments worn by my artist as he

is seen all designer clothes and most prominently the highly popular designer

shoes Balenciaga's that are worshiped among the youthful fashion culture and

this was a choice voice made while planning on how to style my artist.

• Carless is another representation of the young. However in this case it seems as

if this convention is followed This lays in the fact that Curley has got himself into

numerous relationships that are unsuccessful and continues to not be able to

commit – this is demonstrated through the lyrics of the song as this can be

perceived as apart of the rebellious phase that young people go through and

make carless decisions.

• Its also challenges the idea of females being the only emotional gender as

Curly is seen to be hugely distressed and this is seen through his exaggerated

hand gestures as well as distressed facial expressions. This is usually for a male

artist within Hip Hop and therefore reinforces the idea that man are not as

‘tough’ as the media portrays them to be as it is not always women that are

closely in touch with their feelings

Character : Jenifer

• Name: Jenifer• Age: 18• Gender: Female• Race: Spanish• Class: Upper ClassMajority of Jenifer's representations will derive from her gender and this is due to the significant historical change women have made within society over the past couple of centuries .However the dominant ideology's still remain of women being depicted as sexualised objects all to the likings of the male gender. She is styled in a sexualised manner however is wearing jeans which is highly uncommon as females are usually in short garments. It is clear to see that Jenifer's character seems to follow all the conventions of major representations of how the media display females which generally include:

Young

Beautiful

Idea Of conforming to all stereotypes

Slim Physique

Emotional

Following Or Challenging Such

Representations?

• In terms of the stereotypes that link to physical appearance they are all followed due to Jenifer being a young and beautiful female. This is vastly displayed through her clothing worn which is provocative giving close attention to her physique and cleavage. However although it can be perceived that she has a slim figure some would argue that she is ‘thickslim’. This is a new modern term that celebrates females having a bit of extra weight and be quiet curvaceous in comparison to magazine covers of extremely skinny females models. This therefore gives off the idea from my music video to young females that it is okay to not entirely conform to such representations that the media portrays and to be content as well as celerbrated the body you have.

• The emotional aspects of representations stem from old domestic gender roles of females playing the expressive role of looking after their children as well as taking control of the domestic labour. Women are majorly depicted as intensely emotional due to their nurturing nature however this is challenged as within the music video it is the male artist Curly who is rapping as well as singing about heartache and Jenifer takes the lead and decides to leave him and the relationship. This is a vital scene in my music video. It showcases the importance of female dominance as many years ago this would be impossible in a patriarchal institution as well as

showing that she wont let emotions get in the way and instead acts to solve the issue instead.

Camera & Technical Elements Linking To

Representation?

• The fact that the female is hardly showcased through camera

shots shows the lack of her importance as well as only deciding to show her as an sexualised object to attract the

masses of the male audiences

• The fades help to assist in the representation of male

dominance as the fade is quiet quick and takes attention off the female to then regain attention back on to the male artist.

Due to Jenifer's racial background of being a Spanish female this has various negative representations in the media of being a temptress and this is seen through her sexualised dance routine of her swinging her hips , big curly hair and her big mesmerising eyes which is amplified through a close up of them in my music video creating an instant mood of voygeriousm. This type of temptress personality can relate to the luring in of male audiences in order for the video to attract male attention. However it was key to showcase a Spanish individual as they are hugely ignored and highly underrepresented within the media and to give a platform for their awareness.

In terms of race Curly is half Cypriot and also half Arab as many other artist who are from these countries are depicted in the media and the music industry to be immensely rich and therefore helps reinforce Curly affluent lifestyle as will as combining this image to match his star image . Such famous artists including DJ Khaled who has worked with all the finest stars in R&B and Hip hop along with being able to fullfill his own record label’ We The Best’. He also parades around in huge amounts of jewellery.
