Transcript of Characteristics of the Constructivists Classroom
Introduction
This project contains a list of criteria/characteristics for a teacher who
wants to provide a student- centered environment via the Constructivist
approach for students. A brief rationale is given for each
criteria / characteristics in order to justify why it is necessary to
be a part of the Constructivist approach classroom. Additionally, a labeled
diagram of the Constructivist approach classroom is included.
Justification
Visualizing the conditions in the classroom of the future is very important
in order to be an effective teacher. That is why it is necessary to develop a list
of criteria/characteristics for the Constructivist approach classroom. The list
can therefore, be used as a guideline to make learning beneficial to the
students.

List of Criteria/Characteristics
1.The teacher as a facilitator is important in the Constructivist classroom
because there needs to be a person who knows the content of the different
subject areas for him\herself and therefore can guide the students toward
a better understanding of these concepts.
2.The teacher as a resource person is important in the Constructivist classroom
because there needs to be a person who will enable the students to have
sufficient and correct materials to work with.
3. The teacher as a model is important in the Constructivist classroom because
the teacher is needed to speak the Standard Jamaican Language, in order for
the students to emulate the teacher’s model of the language and develop
an appreciation for it.
4. The teacher as a monitor is important in the Constructivist classroom
because the teacher is needed to keep track of the students’ progress in class,
in order to ensure the students are operating at their grade level.
5. A teacher should be creative in the Constructivist classroom because he/she
needs to grab and hold the students’ attention, in order for the students to
remember and retain the concepts long after the lessons have been taught to
them.
6. The teacher should demonstrate integrity in the Constructivist classroom
because students will be able to regard the teacher as a fair and trustworthy
individual in whom they can confide.
7. The teacher should demonstrate intuituity in the Constructivist classroom
because he /she needs to know what type of experiences they want to pull from
the students to contribute to the learning process and at the same time which
experiences will be painful for the students to speak about.
8. The teacher in the Constructivist classroom should be resilient because
he/she may come under constant criticism from principal, colleagues and
parents who see the teacher deviating from the traditional teaching
methodologies and have problems with it.
9. The teacher in the Constructivist classroom should be open-minded
because he/she needs to realize that the students in the classroom come from
different backgrounds and therefore operate at different cognitive levels.
10. The students in the Constructivist classroom will work
collaborative/cooperatively because this will promote positive peer interaction .
11.The students in the Constructivist classroom will interact with the teacher
and class activities because once learning becomes personalized they will
become motivated to learn.
12. The Constructivist classroom should be spacious because both the teacher
and students should be able to move about freely in the class without fear of
bumping into the furniture.
13. The Constructivist classroom should have an adequate ventilation system
in place because both the teacher and the students need an adequate supply of
air to inhale.
14. The Constructivist classroom should have a good lighting system because
both the teacher and students need to see in order to write, read as well as
conduct other learning activities.
15.The Constructivist classroom should have a reading/library corner because
the students need a variety of books to read and it is important to promote
literacy.
16. The Constructivist classroom should have an Achievement corner because
the students need to know that their poems, songs or essays are being
published for their families and friends to view, in essence the students will
become motivated to work harder.
17. The Constructivist classroom should have a Mathematics corner because
some students are able to learn through this subject, especially the male
students.
18. The Constructivist classroom should have an Art corner because there are
students who may not excel in academics but they excel in art and through this
medium they can learn.
19. The Constructivist classroom should have a Music corner because there are
students who are musically inclined.
20. The Constructivist classroom should have a Sports corner because there
are boys who may not excel in academics but they excel in sports and through
this medium they can learn.
21. The Constructivist classroom should have a Games corner because students
need time to relax from the learning process.
22. In the Constructivist classroom the desks and chairs should be grouped,
preferably five to a group, because this will enable students to interact closely
amongst each other.
