Ch. 1.1 Characteristics of Life

Page 2: Characteristics of life notes review

What characteristics do all living things share?

• Set up a concept map or foldable with 6 spots & enough space to include:

– Name of characteristic– Description– Pictures/examples

• Add titles for characteristics:1. Organization2. Growth & development3. Reproduction4. Response to stimuli5. Homeostasis6. Use of Energy

Page 3: Characteristics of life notes review

1. Organization• All living things have one or more cells. • Unicellular organisms (1 cell) have specialized

structures that function to help it survive.• Multicellular organisms (more than 1 cell) have

many types of specialized cells that are organized into groups based on their functions.

5 Levels of Organization

2. Growth & Development• Living things grow by increasing cell size

and/or increasing the number of cells.• Multicellular organisms develop, or change

over time.

Page 7: Characteristics of life notes review

3. Reproduction

• An organism can make one or more organisms through the process of reproduction, which is how a species survives.

Page 9: Characteristics of life notes review

4. Response to stimuli

• Living things adjust and respond to changes in their internal and external environments.– Stimuli = internal or external changes

(hunger, feeling cold, etc.)– Response = the reaction to the change

(eating, shivering, etc.

Page 11: Characteristics of life notes review

5. Homeostasis

• Living things are able to maintain steady internal conditions (inside body), when outside environment changes.

• Stable internal environment

Page 13: Characteristics of life notes review

6. Use of Energy

• Living things use energy for all the things they do.

• They get energy by producing it themselves, eating food, or absorbing food.
