Erving

Goffman’s

Theory

For Goffman’s theory, he believes that there are 4 main types of broad characters in media text:

1. Protagonist (leading role)

2. Deuteragonist (secondary character)

3. Bit player (minor character whose specific background the

audience is not aware of)

4. Fool (a character who uses humour to convey messages)

1. 2.

3. 4.

In our film, VERSES:The protagonist would be Declan Mulligan as he’s our main characterDeuteragonist would be Adam McKenzie as he play’s Declan’s best friend as is shown a lot throughout the filmBit player and Fool would be members of the popular group

Propp’s

Theory

Propp’s theory consists of 7 broad character types in media texts:1. The hero (AKA victim/seeker/paladin/winner, reacts to the donor, weds the

princess)

2. The villain (struggles against the hero)

3. The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)

4. The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)

5. The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)

6. The false hero (perceived as good character in beginning but emerges as evil)

7. The dispatcher (makes the lack known and sends the hero off)

1. 2. 3. 4.

5. 6. 7.In our film, VERSES:Hero is Declan Mulligan as he’s the main character & is the victim/seekerVillain would be his parents not letting him achieve his dreamsThe donor would be a teacher who gives him poetry to do, so he knows he’s good at itHelper (and dispatcher) is Adam McKenzie as he encourages Declan to be a poetFor our film there would be no real princess – unless, it’s seen as Declan’s dream that he in the end, is able to doThe false hero(s) would be the popular group as you think they’re friends with Declan but not with Adam

Richard

Bartle’s

Theory

one of the earliest dedicated to the Internet, and is still used for analysing early virtual worlds today:

1. Achievers (preferred to gain "points," levels, equipment and other

concrete measurements of succeeding in a game)

2. Explorers (preferred to be discovering areas, creating maps and learning

about hidden places)

3. Socialisers (preferred to be interacting with other players, and on some

occasions, computer-controlled characters with personality)

4. Killers (preferred to depart from the norm of being "the good guy" who

comes to save the day and play on the side of evil or conquest)

1.

2. 3.

4.

In our film, VERSES:Achiever – Declan Mulligan as he wants to be, and is, good at school and has good gradesExplorer – Adam McKenzie as he’s interested in travelling around the world and what he can add to it Socialisers – the popular group as they are focused on impressing each other and maintaining their status Killers – Declan’s parents, due to them giving him ‘tough love’ by wanting to succeed in their dream for him and not Declan’s.
