4. Program a Student’s Name Label with each of your student’s names. Determine who will be performing each role, and place each student’s Name Label in the pocket next to the appropriate Assignment Card and in front of the correct Student Role Tab color corresponding to each student’s assigned role. (Note: To ensure that each student has an opportunity to perform every role, rotate the Student’s Name Labels one space/role each time you assign a new title to a literature circle.)

5. Make several copies of each of the Literature Circle Role Reproducibles, and place them in the role pocket behind the corresponding Role Pocket Label. (Note: Before you actually copy the reproducibles, read the following section titled Supplementing the Literature Circle Role Reproducibles.

Introducing the Literature Circle Roles1. Choose a familiar read-aloud book to model

each of the literature circle roles. 2. Each day, select a different Literature Circle

Role Reproducible to copy and distribute to every student.

3. Model each role for your class.4. Give students a chance to perform each role,

assessing and reinstructing when necessary.

Introducing the Literature Circles Pocket Chart1. Pointing to the Chart, tell students that they

should check the Chart for their reading and role assignments. Instruct students to look at the Assignment Cards to see what pages they are to read.

2. Direct students to search the Student Role Tabs to see which role they are to perform in their group.

3. Tell students to retrieve the appropriate Literature Circle Role Reproducible from that role pocket.

4. Remind students to review the reproducible carefully before beginning the assigned reading to help them keep their responsibilities in mind as they read.

Alternative UsageIf you prefer, you can organize and use the role pockets along the right side of the Chart to distribute and collect each literature circle’s materials: Use a dry erase marker to write the name of each literature circle on a Role Pocket Label. Then place copies of all of the appropriate Literature Circle Role Reproducibles for each circle in the corresponding pocket. Remind members of each circle to return their materials to that pocket when finished with the assignment.

Supplementing the Literature Circle Role ReproduciblesBefore you copy any of the Literature Circle Role Reproducibles, explain what your criteria is for a successful group experience and ask for additional criteria from students, then create a system with your class for assessing success. For example, you likely want each student to participate fully as well as for student to come prepared, and students might want fellow members to offer well-supported responses on Literature Circle Role Reproducibles. Synthesize your expectations into a rubric and make a double-sided copy of your reproducibles with the rubric on the back.

Scaffolding the ExperienceCreate a display that students will be able to reference as they work independently to complete their role reproducibles: Make a copy of the cover of a familiar book and display it next to the Chart. Complete each of the role reproducibles with relevant information pertaining to that book and hang them near the book’s cover.
