THE NEW VICTORY ® THEATER 1
THE NARRATOR helps tell the story. He is played by a man in a black suit.
He dresses up as many characters. At different points in the show he might play the wise Skin Horse who explains how love makes toys real. He might play Nana who keeps the Little Boy’s nursery tidy.
He might play a Real Rabbit who teases the Velveteen Rabbit in the garden. And he might play the Doctor who takes care of the Little Boy when he is sick.
THE LITTLE BOY has many toys to play with. He pretends to go on great adventures using his imagination. He loves to snuggle with the Velveteen Rabbit. He is played by a man in a hat.

THE VELVETEEN RABBIT is a toy who loves playing with the Little Boy. He wants to be a real rabbit one day. He is played by a man in a brown suit.
THE REAL RABBITS hop on large bouncy balls in the garden. They tease the Velveteen Rabbit because he can’t hop. They are played by the same people who play the Little Boy and the Narrator.
There is also a LIVE MUSICIAN who plays the piano throughout the play!

First, the Little Boy gets the Velveteen Rabbit as a Christmas gift. The Little Boy brings the Velveteen Rabbit into his nursery with all of his other toys.
The nursery is where the Velveteen Rabbit meets the wise Skin Horse who tells him that love has the power to make toys become real.

The Little Boy and the Velveteen Rabbit love to go on adventures. The Little Boy’s bed transports them with the help of their imaginations.
Together, they imagine becoming sailors on the sea. At one point, they must brave a big storm. When this happens, the lights in the theater change, and the sound gets louder. But that’s okay, because no matter what, the Little Boy and the Velveteen Rabbit are still safe.
If I get scared, I can go to the Calming Corner in the theater’s lobby.

Next, the Little Boy and the Velveteen Rabbit play outside and the Velveteen Rabbit meets the Real Rabbits for the very first time.
The Real Rabbits tease him because he is just a toy. But the Velveteen Rabbit knows that the Little Boy loves him, and one day he will be a real rabbit, too.

Toward the end of the play, the Little Boy gets very sick. It takes him a long time to get better. The Velveteen Rabbit stays at the Little Boy’s side.
When the Little Boy becomes well, Nana thinks the Velveteen Rabbit is dirty and will get the Little Boy sick again. Nana wants to throw the Velveteen Rabbit on a bonfire. This might make me feel sad. But the bonfire will not be lit.
This is when a magical fairy comes and turns the Velveteen Rabbit into a real rabbit because of the Little Boy’s love.

Then, before the play is over, a real live rabbit comes on stage. This might make me feel excited. But we don’t want to scare the rabbit, so I will watch the rabbit from my seat and try to stay quiet while it is onstage.
