A leader is a person who helps an individual or agroup of individuals in achieving their goals.
A leader does not always have to be the president, or the elected leader. It may bean active leader of the group, or someone
who reaches out to help another person.
A follower is an individual who follows theideas, goals, or tasks of a leader. Followers are
developed by working together to identify goalsand strategies for achieving the goals.

common sense.
Leaders are born, not made.

leadership from is the schoolof hard knocks.

Trait TheoriesPeople are born with certain
characteristics which make
them leaders.
![Page 31: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)

Trait Theories
―Leaders are born, not made‖ Leaders possess certain traits:
• Intelligence, judgment, and verbal ability
• Past achievement in scholarship & athletics
• Emotional maturity and stability
• Dependability, persistence, and drive
• Social and adaptation skills• A desire for status & socioeconomic position
![Page 32: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)

Behavioral Theories
―Leaders are made, not born‖
Individuals, no matter what their traits are, can be
trained to be leaders It is about how people behave, not how they are
wired
If behavioral theories work, then this expands
greatly the number of potential leaders everycompany has (everyone)!
![Page 33: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)

Are Leaders Born or Made?
Q. Do you think Leaders are
born or made? Take a position
and support it with facts, opinions, and/or examples
![Page 34: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)

Are Leaders Born or Made?
What the research has shown:
While some % of the population have “leadership traits”,
Trait Theories have never been proven as a valid
approachWhile people can be taught certain behaviors to increase
their leadership effectiveness, the Behavioral Theories
falls short because they don’t account for the uniqueness
of each situation.
As is often the case, the answer is… IT DEPENDS!
![Page 35: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)

Situational Theories
―It Depends‖
(Perhaps) 15% of people are born with those traits thatleaders often have are effective leaders, an additional70% can be taught to be effective leaders, and 15%
will never acquire the necessary traits.
―Successful leadership requires the idealcombination of leaders, followers, and situations‖
Q. Can anyone provide an example of a scenarioyou‘ve seen or experienced that supports this
notion?
![Page 36: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)

►Leadership is a process, not a position.
In this model, leadership can be viewed as the interaction between leaders, followers, and the situation.

TO LE DERSHIP
A. Vroom-Yetton-Jago Model: Successful leadershiprequires determining which style of leadership will
result in decisions that are ideal for the org and will be
accepted by the employees.
Decision Styles:
1. Autocratic – manager makes the decision alone
2. Consultative – manager gets info and input from
employees, then makes the decision alone3. Group-focused – manager & employees meet, then
group makes the decision
.

Competencies link organizational strategy with people, and
people who are aligned with strategic goals are better able tomeet challenges .

The Key
• The key to courageous leadership and conscious action is how one
responds to what arises on the path, rather than whether individualcircumstances are defined as great, good, bad or just plain ugly.
• In conscious, courageous leadership, every situation or circumstance
— every so-called success or failure, barrier or doorway — is simply
another opportunity for greater creativity, mastery, and fulfillment
of higher potential.

Integrity
Integrity is set of values that we hold ourselves
responsible for and demonstrate in our behavior
toward others.
We can develop and maintain integrity .
We develop self-awareness and become independent
thinkers by keeping our promises.
Trust

• If we break our promises to ourselves and to other
people, then we erode trust.
• It is necessary to 'walk the talk'. The assuring words
that you speak or write are like promises. Peopleexpect these promises to be kept. And if they are not
then the problem arises as the trust and credibility are
lost.
• Thus always remember, 'When you break a promise,
more than the promise gets broken.'

• Learn to listen: Make time to listen to your team members and hear what
they are actually saying. Sometimes, people don't know how to clearly say
what they mean. Learn to listen to even what is not being said.
• Lead by example: Your team will only truly learn the standards you expect
of them, if you walk your talk. You, be their example.
• Confronting fear: True leaders are not fearless people. They are those whoface their fear, acknowledge it and move ahead towards their objective
inspite of the fear.
• Dress right: The way you look has an impact on the responses you get.
Ensure you dress crisply, neatly and in keeping with your role....don't
overdo it, at the same time avoid being sloppy. Dress to convey you mean
business. Image is important when leading other people. Dress for success.
In the game of people, they tend to judge you by the way you look on the

• Look at your own work and acknowledge yourstrengths as well as what skills you need to improve.
• Your focus should be to lead your organization to
success.
• Ensure positive results through implementation of
various competencies.

• Based on the situations you face everyday you can
determine which of the competencies you will use to
ensure the success of your efforts.
• Recognize that sometimes we have to 'stretch'
ourselves to make a positive difference in the lives ofothers.

creativity. We cannot always wait until
we have created the perfect process or product. There should be a balance
between preventing problems and

functional areas, departments orwork groups are in competition,
they may find subtle ways of
working against each other or
withholding information. Instead,
there should be collaborationamong and within units.

disseminate information about the TQM
effort. They make it evident that TQM isnot just a slogan. Communication is two
way-- ideas will be generated by people
when leaders encourage them and act uponthem. For example, on the eve of Operation

Suppliers are encouraged to participate in project teams and

quality materials and the true
measure is the lifecycle cost.

leadership requires an intuitive
understanding of the humannature-- the basic needs,
wants and abilities of people. To be effective, a leader
understands the following:
170
• People, paradoxically, need security andindependence at the same time.
• People are sensitive to external rewards and
![Page 171: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/171.jpg)

People are sensitive to external rewards and
punishments and yet are strongly self-motivated.• People like to hear a kind word of praise. Catch
people doing something right, so you can pat
them on the back .• People can process only a few facts at a time.
Thus, a leader needs to keep things simple.
• People trust their gut reaction more thanstatistical data.
• People reject a leader‘s rhetoric if the words are
inconsistent with his actions
171
Leaders need to give their employees independenceand yet provide a secure working environment,
one that encourages and rewards successes

Stephen R. Covey has based his foundation forsuccess on the character ethics.
This includes things like integrity humility

This includes things like integrity, humility,
fidelity, temperance, courage, justice, patience, industry, simplicity, modesty and the
golden rule.
The personality ethic-- personality growth, communication skills training and education in
the field of influence strategies and positive
thinking-- is secondary to the character ethics. What we “are” communicates far more eloquently
than what we ―say‖ or ―do.‖ 175
A paradigm is the way we perceive, understand and
interpret the world around us.

It is a different way of looking at people and things.
To be effective we need to make a paradigm shift.
Most scientific breakthroughs are the results of
paradigm shifts such as Copernicus viewing the sun
as the center of the universe rather than Earth.
Paradigm shifts are quantum changes, whether slow
and deliberate or instantaneous.176
A habit is the intersection of knowledge, skill and
desire.

Knowledge is the ―what to do‖ and the ―why,‖ skill
is the “how to do,” and desire is the ―motivation‖
or “want to do.”
In order for something to become a habit, you have to
have all three of the above.

• Proactive behavior is the outcome of conscious
choice based on values whereas reactive behavior is
based on feelings.
• Reactive people let circumstances, conditions or
their environment tell them how to respond.
Proactive people let carefully thought-about,
selected and internalized values tell them how to
respond. 179

that differentiates the two behaviors. No one

Habit 2-- Begin with the End in Mind
• The most fundamental application of this habit is to
![Page 182: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/182.jpg)

begin each day with an image, picture or paradigmof the end of your life as your frame of reference.
• Each part of your life can be examined in terms of
what really maters to you-- a vision of your life as a
whole.
• All things are created twice-- there is a mental or
first creation and a physical or second creation to all
things.
182
Habit 2-- Begin with the End in Mind
• To build a house you first create a blueprint and then
![Page 183: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/183.jpg)

construct the actual house.• You create a speech on paper before you give it.
• If you want to have a successful organization you
begin with a plan that will produce the appropriateend.
• Thus, leadership is the first creation and
management is the second.• Leadership means doing the right things and
management means doing things right.183
Habit 2-- Begin with the End in Mind
• In order to begin with the end in mind, develop a personal philosophy
or creed Start by considering the examples mentioned below:
![Page 184: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/184.jpg)

or creed. Start by considering the examples mentioned below:
• Never compromise with honesty
• Remember the people involved
• Maintain a positive attitude
• Exercise daily
• Keep a sense of humor
• Do not fear mistakes • Facilitate the success of subordinates
• Seek divine help 184
Habit 3-- Put First Things First
• Habit one says, “You’re the creator.
![Page 185: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/185.jpg)

• You are in charge.” • Habit two is the first creation and is based on
imagination-- leadership based on values.
• Habit three is practicing self-management and
requires habits one and two as prerequisites.
• It is the day-by-day, moment-by-momentmanagement of your time.
185
Habit 3-- Put First Things First
The ―time management matrix‖
![Page 186: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/186.jpg)

Habit 3-- Put First Things First• Urgent means it requires immediate attention and important
has to do with results that contribute to your mission, goals
![Page 187: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/187.jpg)

and values.• Effective, proactive people spend most of their time in
quadrant II, thereby reducing the time spent in quadrant I.
• Four activities are necessary to be effective.
• First, write down your key roles for the week (such as
research manager, United Way Chairperson and parent).
Second, list your objectives for each role using many
quadrant II activities. These objectives should be tied toyour personal goals or philosophy developed in habit 2.
Third, schedule time to complete the objectives.
• Fourth, adapt the weekly schedule to your daily activities187
Habit 4-- Think Win-Win • Win-win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks

mutual benefit in all human interactions. Both sides come
out ahead.
• In fact, the end result is usually a better way. If win-win is
not possible, then the alternative is no deal.
• It takes great courage as well as consideration to createmutual benefits, especially if the other party is thinking
win-lose.
• Win-win embraces five interdependent dimensions of life--
character, relationships, agreements, systems and
processes.
188
• Character involves the following traits:
• Integrity

![Page 189: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/189.jpg)

• Maturity-- a balance between being
considerate of others and the courage to
express feelings
• Abundance mentality (there is plenty out
there for everyone)
189
In order to obtain win-win, a four-step process isneeded. It is as follows:
1. See the problem from the other viewpoint.
![Page 190: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/190.jpg)

1. See the problem from the other viewpoint.
2. Identify the key issues and concerns.
3. Determine acceptable results.
4. Seek possible new options to achieve those results.
190
Habit 5-- Seek first to understand, then to
be understood
Seek first to understand involves a paradigm shift since we
![Page 191: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/191.jpg)

It focuses on learning how the other person sees the world,
how they feel etc.
The essence of empathic listening is not that you agree with
someone.
It is that you fully and deeply understand the person,
emotionally as well as intellectually.
Next to physical survival is the greatest need of a human
being of psychological survival-- to be understood,

Ethos is your personal credibility or character,
pathos is the empathy you have with the other
person’s communication and logos is the logic orreasoning part of your presentation.

Habit 6-- Synergy • Synergy means that the whole is greater than the
parts
![Page 193: Chapter_2_Leadership DR. S B MALLUR](https://reader035.fdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081323/577cc5171a28aba7119b44f6/html5/thumbnails/193.jpg)

parts.
• Together, we can accomplish more than any of us
can accomplish alone.
• This can best be exemplified by the musical group
―The Beatles.‖ They as a group created more music
than each individual created after the group broke
up.
• The first five habits build toward habit six.
193
Habit 6-- Synergy • It focuses the concept of win-win and the skills of
empathic communication on tough challenges that

empathic communication on tough challenges that
bring about new alternatives which did not exist
before.
• Synergy occurs when people abandon their
humdrum presentations and win-lose mentality and
open themselves up to creative cooperation.
• When there is a genuine understanding, people reach
solutions that are better than they could haveachieved acting alone.

• Renewal comes from prayer, meditation andspiritual reading.
• The mental dimension is continuing to develop your
intellect through reading, seminars and writing.
• These three dimensions require that time.
• The social and emotional dimensions of our lives are
tied together because our emotional life is primarily, but not exclusively, developed out of and manifested
in our relationship with others. 196
Habit 7-- Sharpen the Saw (Renewal) • While this activity does not require time, it does
require exercise.

short-term results at the expense of themselves and

• For example, behavior is good based on the degree
of utility, pleasure or good received, regardless of
the effect on others.
• Organizations and managers believe their
knowledge is infallible and miscalculate the true
risks, such as when financial managers invest
organizational funds in high-risk options trading.215
• Tendency toward unethical behavior most likelycomes from the interaction of the root causes of
pressure, opportunity and attitude.

• Unethical behavior is especially prevalent if
employee morale is low.
• For example, poor working conditions, employeedownsizing, and unacknowledged good work and
denied promotions can all contribute to an
employee’s poor attitude.

1. Production must be seen as a system encompassing
customers and suppliers in a win-win situation.

companies. Anything new learned in one company must
be shared with all including competitors.

• Organizations should develop a long-term view of at least ten years

education to achieve the goals. Innovation is promoted to ensure that a
product or service does not become obsolete.
• A family organizational philosophy is developed to send the messagethat everyone is the part of organization.

• Value and satisfaction may be influenced by many factors
throughout the customer's overall purchase, ownership and
