Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - Chapter Summaries 1 Night in the City Where the horrible Mr Hyde is introduced, and confronted by Mr. Enfield. 2 The Signature Where Mr. Hyde is forced to pay damages to the girl’s father and Mr. Enfield noticed that the cheque he gave was signed by Dr Henry Jekyll. 3 Blackmail House Where Mr. Enfield and his uncle Mr. Utterson, the lawyer, go for a walk in the neighbourhood and came upon the house Mr. Hyde entered. Mr. Enfield tells Mr. Utterson about the story of a girl  being trampled by Mr. Hyde. Mr. Utterson knows Dr Jekyll signed the check without being told. 4 Search for Mr. Hyde Where Mr. Utterson tries to find out more information about this evil Mr. Hyde. He waits outside the door for days and weeks until he finally he meets him. 5 Dr Jekyll Where Mr. Utterson eventually confronts Dr Jekyll about this man Hyde, who is set to inherit Jekyll’s fortune. Dr Jekyll forces Mr. Utterson to help Mr. Hyde if anything happens to him. 6 The Carew Murder Case Where Mr. Hyde is seen killing a prominent MP, a client of Mr. Utterson’s; Mr. Utterson then helps with the investigation . 7 The Letter Where Mr. Utterson confronts Dr Jekyll and demands to know whether he is hiding Mr. Hyde. Jekyll is ill, says he is through with Hyde, and gives Utterson a letter he says is from Hyde. Utterson later concludes Jekyll wrote the note. 8 The Terror of Dr Lanyon Where Dr Lanyon falls ill suddenly and blames Dr Jekyll for it. He dies, and Mr. Utterson receives a note from him saying not to read it until after Jekyll has died or disappeared. 9 The Face at the Window Mr. Utterson and Mr. Enfield who are out walking near Jekyll’s laboratory step in to talk with Jekyll. Jekyll is at the upper window, looking ill. Jekyll begins to tremble and transform, which shocks the men below. 10 The Last Night Where Mr. Poole, Jekyll’s servant, comes to summon Mr. Utterson to Dr Jekyll’s, claiming that there has been foul play and Jekyll may be dead. Utterson goes, and he and Poole break down the door to Jekyll’s study to find Mr. Hyde dead on the floor. 11 The Disappearance Where Poole and Mr. Utterson search Jekyll’s laboratory looking for signs of the doctor, and Utterson discovers a letter addressed to him. 12 Dr Lanyon’s Statement Where Mr. Utterson reads the letter Dr Lanyon wrote before his death, explaining how Dr Jekyll had written him an urgent letter asking for help. Lanyon did as he was asked, then was visited by a certain sinister Mr. Hyde, who mixed a potion and transformed himself into Dr Jekyll before his eyes. 13 Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of the Case Where Dr Jekyll’s final letter to Mr. Utterson explains the full story behind the doctor’s quest to separate his ‘two sides’. It explains what started to go wrong, and the results of losing control of Mr. Hyde when he returned – and how he has finally run out of the drug that enabled him to return to his natural state.
