SPORTTECH: textiles for sporting and leisureapplications

13.1 OVERVIEWIncreasing worldwide interest and participation in active sports and outdoor leisurepursuits have resulted in strong historical growth in the consumption of textilematerials in sporting and related goods and equipment, particularly in the form of

synthetic fibres and coatings which have largely replaced traditional cotton fabricsand other natural fibres.

The continuing pursuit of even higher standards of end-user safety andperformance is now stimulating the use of higher priced, branded speciality fibresand other materials, supported by product promotion on a global basis, designed topull demand through into the mass market for sports and other related applications. As yet, however, such products remain restricted to very small volumes in top endapplications. Larger, less sophisticated Sporttech product segments such as softluggage are maturing in many regions and growing only slowly.

In volume terms Sporttech is small; at less than 1 million tonnes in 2000, Sporttechwas the third smallest application area. Unit values, however, are very high, reflecting the finished nature of what are, mostly, consumer goods and therelatively high level of coating, high performance fibre and other added value items. As a result of this high unit value, in 2000 Sporttech was the second largestsegment, valued at US$13.9 billion.

In many cases, the increased sports participation is also driven by higher performing, lighter, safer and ultimately cheaper, sports equipment and clothing, fed bySporttech textiles, often using innovative materials or technology.

Final consumption of sports goods is currently highest in developed economies suchas the US where participation rates are high and mostly still growing (see Exhibit13.3). However, the production and consumption of sports textiles is expected to

grow most quickly in the medium to long term in developing countries where livingstandards and lifestyles are changing fastest.

13.4 MARKET SIZE AND TRENDS13.4.1 Dominated by luggage components

The Sporttech sector is dominated by one end-use, luggage components, of

relatively low specification. These accounted for two-thirds of the total sectorvolume of 990,000 tonnes in the year 2000.

13.4.2 Variations in growth ratesProspects for growth of the Sporttech application area are greatest for China, withCAGRs of 4.3% and 4.7% between 2000 and 2005, and 2005 and 2010,respectively (more than twice the growth rates of Western European countries suchas the UK and Germany). This is largely as a result of the growing dominance ofChina as a supplier of tents, luggage, bags and other labour intensive products (seeExhibit 13.5). For these five products, China accounts for between 80 and 90 percent of total Western European imports.

13.4.3 SailclothTraditional sail fabrics such as linen and cotton have now largely been replaced bysynthetic fibres; traditional canvas materials are not suitable for use on large yachts

since they would be too heavy. The majority of sails are produced from resin-impregnated woven filament polyester, which offers lighter and stronger fabricswith reduced stretch, allowing the aerodynamic shape of the sails to be maintainedfor longer. Nylon is used in spinnakers where more stretch is desirable.

At the top end of the racing market, there has been increased use of highperformance fibres such as Dyneema and Vectran which provide strength but have

The need to absorb the shock of sudden deployment requires that parachutes aremade from fine filament polyamide woven fabrics, which provide the necessary

degree of stretch. Historically, high tenacity nylon 66 has also been used foraerofoils of paragliders, providing a high degree of durability, resistance to tearingand low porosity. Allegedly better performing aerofoil fabrics, with low elongationand better UV resistance, are available using high tenacity polyester, with orwithout a film laminate to minimise porosity.

The fabrics used in the production of balloons are primarily PU-coated polyamide.Fabric panels nearest the gas burners are often made from meta-aramid fibres, suchas Nomex.

13.4.5 RopesRopes and cords are used in a number of sporting applications including sailing, ballooning, paragliding, climbing and abseiling. Performance is often critical and anumber of high performance fibres such as aramids, ultra-high molecular weightpolyethylene (UHMPE) and Liquid Crystal Polymer are used, normally in braidedmultifilament form, as well as various grades of polypropylene, polyester and nylon.

For example, a climbing rope may involve a polypropylene core wrapped in apolyamide sheath for abrasion resistance. Similarly, a high performing paraglidermay be fitted with lanyards made from Kevlar with a diameter as small as 1.3 mm,sheathed with polyester or nylon for added protection and colour-coding potential.Phosphorescent fibres are sometimes used in underwater ropes.

13.4.6 Equipment compositesThere are a wide variety of applications for composites used in sporting and leisuregoods, including skis, snowboards, golf clubs, various bats and racquets, jet skis, canoes, etc.

Materials used in skis have developed originally from wood, through metal in the1950s, through glass fibre in the 1960s to a variety of plastics, composites andcarbon fibre today. High performance skis include aramid fibres as a reinforcementto provide high tension rigidity and vibration damping. While carbon adds tensile

strength, the main benefits are lighter weight and durability.

Although steel and aluminium still dominate in bicycle frames, performance fibressuch as carbon and p-aramid offer a good weight/rigidity combination and areincreasingly used in cycle components, such as handlebars.

In many product sectors, the composites take the form of loose fibre, but an

    Artificial turf becoming an acceptablealternative

As a result of technological advances inartificial turf, FIFA, the world'sgoverning body for football (soccer),now allows some international andpreliminary matches to be played onartificial turf.

composites face competition from other, even higher performing materials such astitanium, despite their even higher price.

13.4.7 Artificial turfAlthough fibres such as nylon and PVC areused in artificial grass, this end use is nowdominated by polypropylene, mostly in theform of fibrillated slit tape which may alsobe subsequently textured (e.g. knit-de-knitor bulked). For indoor use, 12, 16 or 24ends of lower denier slit tape may betwisted together into a 'multifilament'structure.

The slit tape yarns are tufted into a woven backing, again usually made ofpolypropylene. Some fabrics with a lower pile for specialist applications are woven, rather than tufted, while polyethylene has been introduced as a backing material toreduce friction burns.

13.4.8 TentsThere has been a major shift in recent years away from the use of nylon in tentfabrics towards polyester. This switch is largely a result of the problems of dyeingpolyester being overcome by the use of pigment coating, enabling the much lowerpriced polyester fibre to be used. Most fabrics are PU-coated and/or siliconproofed.

Proofed cotton canvas is still used for large, less portable tents and marquees.

13.4.9 Sleeping bagsLike tents, sleeping bags vary considerably in complexity and performance. Mostemploy lightweight nylon fabrics as an outer cover, but polyester andcotton/polyester blends can also be used at the lower end of the market. Thechoice of inner fabric varies more widely and depends to a large extent on the

fillings used and the price/performance ratio of the finished product. Examplesinclude soft handle nylon, polyester/cotton, cotton and viscose blends. All innerfabrics should, however, be 'user friendly', and warm and soft to the touch.

Natural products such as goose and duck down are still generally regarded ashaving the best performance in terms of insulation, loft and drape, and these stilldominate the top end of the market However synthetic fibres mostly based on

Over recent years, and as rucksacks and bags have become fashion items, there hasbeen a trend towards the use of polyester fabrics, at least in areas where abrasion

requirements are lower, in view of the brighter colours with less shine and softertexture attainable with this fibre, as well as its lower cost. Bags and rucksacksproduced from polyester fabrics now account for around two-thirds of the totalmarket.

Narrow woven fabrics, mostly in polypropylene, are used as strapping.

Polyester is believed to have also increased its share of the market for other bagsand soft luggage used for sports and leisure purposes, especially in the middle price

range. Nylon fabrics are still extensively used, however, sometimes coated withPVC (at the cheaper end of the market). There is also some use of nonwovensubstrates, PU- or PVC-coated, for example in 'leather look' handbags.

Textile shopping bags are often made of polypropylene tape, or of renewable andbiodegradable materials such as jute, cotton or hemp, with natural fibres accountingfor half of the market volume in the year 2000.

    13.4.11

Marine fabricsMarine covers are used to cover the entrance and other areas of boats, largelywhen the vessel is not being used. A number of different woven fabric types, largely based either on solution-dyed acrylics (for their UV resistance), PVC-coatedpolyester or cotton canvas are used in large volumes as covers for boats, themajority of which are pleasure craft.
