61 Conclusions The objectives of this research were to

help the decision makers of Pradeshiya Sabhas to capture all aspects

o f the integrated solid waste composting and planning such as site

selection technology selection laws and regulations which should be

considered

guide the user to control all factors influencing the solid waste

composting process at the site

help to identify other available income generating sources such as

recycling of paper glass etc except composting and biogas

2 Validate the developed expert system through use of empirical data from

field applications

As a result o f this research the following conclusion can be arrived at

1 The present status of the solid waste management practices in Sri Lanka is in a

poor condition This was attributed to the difficulty in obtaining right expert

advice during planning as well as the operational phase

2 B E S T C O M P helps decision makers to capture all aspects of the integrated

solid waste composting and planning such as site selection technology

selection laws and regulations which should be considered guide the user to

control all factors influencing the solid waste composting process at the site

and to identify other available income generating sources such as recycling of

paper glass etc except composting and biogas

3 There are 258 Pradeshiya Sabahas in Sri Lanka and all these have the problems

that require some sort o f expertise As the developed system converses in the

local language (Sinhala) the man-machine link will not be a problem and

perhaps receive much better attention from the users o f BESTCOMP

4 The BESTCOMP will guide the local government authorities of Sri Lanka to

find the most suitable solution to solve solid waste management problem with

the available resources in their area and aid their decision making process on

solid waste management It also helps in determining resource deficiencies

when the user utilizes the data provided in an instructive manner

5 The BESTCOMP has many decision support Modules so that a user can

identify problems faster examine various alternatives and make a choice The

system performs all the functions of a decision support system In the system

user have better access to information and able to share information test

decision choices and make faster decisions User will be able to have the

benefits o f inform decision-making

6 The validation of BESTCOMP showed the flow o f consultation was user

friendly allowing user to reset conclusions to repeat rule inferences and to

link all relevant sites until the user was satisfied with the results

62 Recommendations for future w o r k

BESTCOMP can also be used as a stand-alone learning tool in environmental studies

and by others such as town planners Thus a system o f much versatility has been

developed This is use of tools of information technology to help to solve local

problems in an informative manner

Even though there is a lack of expertise in Sri Lanka to advise local

authorities on all aspects of solid waste management hierarchy the B E S T C O M P has

addressed only the composting process control The system has not addressed the

issues of technology selection planning and designing and economic analysis of

waste collections transportations various technologies operation and maintenance of

compost plants and cost benefits It is necessary to improve all these aspects to derive

maximum benefits o f the BESTCOMP expert system

3 There are 258 Pradeshiya Sabahas in Sri Lanka and all these have the problems

that require some sort o f expertise As the developed system converses in the

local language (Sinhala) the man-machine link will not be a problem and

perhaps receive much better attention from the users o f BESTCOMP

4 The BESTCOMP will guide the local government authorities of Sri Lanka to

find the most suitable solution to solve solid waste management problem with

the available resources in their area and aid their decision making process on

solid waste management It also helps in determining resource deficiencies

when the user utilizes the data provided in an instructive manner

5 The BESTCOMP has many decision support Modules so that a user can

identify problems faster examine various alternatives and make a choice The

Even though there is a lack of expertise in Sri Lanka to advise local

authorities on all aspects of solid waste management hierarchy the B E S T C O M P has

addressed only the composting process control The system has not addressed the

issues of technology selection planning and designing and economic analysis of

waste collections transportations various technologies operation and maintenance of
