4Financial Distributions for U.S.-Canada Scholarships

With 24 undergraduate scholarships at $1,200 each and 4 graduate scholarships at $1,700 each, a total of $35,600 was available for scholarship awards to eligible students in the U.S. and Canada for academic year 2004-2005.

Financial Distributions for Greek Scholarships

The selection of the Greek scholarships recipients is still pending at this time as the committee is working with the Foundation in order to be certain that all the criteria for the Lacas scholarships recipients are met. Special Non Recurring Undergraduate and Graduate Recipients ($1,200 each)

This year brought to us an exceptionally gifted group of applicants for scholarships; it proved to be a difficult task for the scholarship committee to select who the recipients would be as many bright students would be left not receiving any assistance. The delegates of various chapters and some individuals at this year’s convention upon hearing of this situation generously pledged a total of 16 one time scholarships of $1,200 each for the students who were not awarded a scholarship initially. Of these 16 one time scholarships 12 have been awarded for this year and 4 will carry over into next year. The Foundation at this time is still in the process of receiving the funds for these scholarships which have been pledged, these scholarships will be sent out to the recipients as the funds become available. The Scholarship Committee would like to thank the generosity of the chapters and individuals who made these special one time scholarships available.

6Notes of Thanks

The Chair of the Scholarship Committee would like to extend his thanks and appreciation to his colleagues on the committee, Dr. Louis Klarevas and Terry Platis, for their all their time, effort and input in making the scholarship process run smoothly. The Chair would like to also to thank Pan-Icarian Foundation Chairman Anthony Kayafas, Vice Chairman Socrates Koutsoutis and Directors Gus Yiakas, John Lygizos and Chris Aivaliotis for their assistance and continued commitment to the scholarship program. I would also be remiss if I did not thank Yiannis Tsantes who has been the backbone to the Brotherhood’s Greek scholarship program. Last but not least I would like to thank all of you out there who through your hard work and generosity have made the Pan Icarian Scholarship Program the largest and most successful by a wide margin of any that I know of that exists in the Greek community. This is truly a notable accomplishment when we consider the size of the Icarian community relative to that which comprises other Greek organizations.

HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR wishes to allIcarians from the Brothers and Sisters of Detroit SPANOS-ARETI Chapter # 9. We pray and hope that the year 2005brings to you and your families good health and happiness. Our chapter had a very busy month after the NationalConvention. We would like to congratulate the Chicagochapter Aristides Foutrides # 8 for a great convention. Wehave had many activities during the past months. Besidesthe regular meetings we had a very successful Halloweenparty for our young & older kids. Young & older partici-pants had greattime. Our ChristmasParty for allmembers, was alsoone of the best weever had. It wasvery well attended! Close to 100 members with theirfamilies took part in the celebration. Our children got thepresents directly from Agios Vasilios, who came from theNorth Pole a few days earlier just for them.

This showed that the spirit of Ikaros is still among us.There was plenty of good food! Needless to say, our annual New Years Eve party was agreat one. Many of our members, close to 100, with theirfamilies and friends came to welcome the New Year 2005and celebrate with us. Every one of us brought a dish ordessert. We had many choices of food and drinks that madethe party one of the best of all times. It was really a foodfestival. We would like to thank all of our members whobrought enough food for two more parties. For this year we have programmed many activities; anight to the Greek town casino, Valentines party, alsoparticipation, as every year, to the Greek IndependenceDay Parade downtown Detroit Greek town, “Arnaki stiSouvla” for the summer and our third annual charity golfouting – plus many more activities. We would like to ask you to reserve the date SATUR-DAY JUNE 11TH, 2005, for our golf outing at one of thebest golf courses EAGLE CREST in Michigan. Help us tomake it a very successful one again. We wish to all Icarians happy spring & happy Easter.Submitted by PSP Chapter President George Contis
