Page 2: Chapter Cinema August

Welcome to our cinema miniGuide for August. We’ve some gorgeous films in store this month, starting with our After Dark special (p4-5); a selection of classic noir favourites such as Chinatown and Point Blank mixed in with gothic new releases, Byzantium and the apocalyptic World War Z. Sofia Coppola takes us on a dizzying crime-spree in The Bling Ring (p6), the true story of a group of teenagers who burgled the homes of Hollywood stars. In stark contrast we catch a rare glimpse of everyday Saudi Arabia through the eyes of strong-willed young tomboy Wadjda (p8) in a heartfelt film from a country where cinemas have been banned for over thirty years. Cine Phonic, our music and film extravaganza continues with the one-off nationwide event David Bowie is happening now (p10), screened live from the V & A, at the finale of their enormously successful exhibition. Plus we’ve some fantastic music docs, from My Father and the Man in Black (p10), a journey of discovery for the son of Johnny Cash’s talented but troubled manager, to Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer (p11), which takes a look at the protest and subsequent imprisonment of three feminist superstars, in a case that shocked the world. For highlights of other events, including some great summer workshops happening in Chapter this month, turn to page 14.

RenoirFri 26 July — Thu 1 AugFrance/2012/111mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Gilles Bourdos. With: Michel Bouquet, Christa Theret, Vincent Rottiers.

At the estate of Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1915, his son Jean returns home to convalesce during the war. During his stay he becomes attracted to his father’s beguiling muse, Andrée who seduces Jean into the new art of filmmaking, giving him the opportunity to step out from under his father’s long artistic shadow. A sensuous tale of love between rivals who happen to be father and son, where the only rule of the game is that all is fair in love and war.

The ComedianFri 26 July — Thu 1 AugUK/2012/80mins/15. Dir: Tom Shkolnik. With: Edward Hogg, Elisa Lasowski, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett.

Ed is a twenty-something year old trying to make it on the London Comedy circuit, keeping skin and bone together by working in call centres during the day and performing in pubs and comedy clubs by night. Together with Alissa, his soulful flatmate and Nathan, a charismatic gay man he picks up on a bus, the film explores Ed’s sense of drifting uncertainty in post financial crises Britain.

“The spirit of Dogma 95 is alive, well and refreshingly reinvented in The Comedian.” Variety

BlackfishFri 26 July — Thu 1 AugUSA/2013/90mins/15. Dir: Briela Cowperthwaite.

Performing orca Tilikum has killed several people whilst in captivity. Shocking footage and interviews from the staff explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment and pressures from the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals. A mesmerizing psychological thriller with a killer whale at its centre, this is the first film since Grizzly Man to show how nature can get revenge on man when pushed to its limits.

ByzantiumFri 2 — Thu 8 AugUK/2012/118mins/15. Dir: Neil Jordan. With: Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan.

Clara, a hardworking lap-dancer and her kind, introverted daughter, Eleanor are on the run and end up at a bleak British beach town. Befriending a lonely businessman who provides shelter for them in his recently inherited guesthouse Byzantium, they try to settle, but settling and making friends is a problem for these women who are unlike any other. Intercutting wintry realism of the present with sinister occult events in the past, this is a seductive, complex and beautifully shot film that combines the classic gothic of the vampire tale with political bite.

“Seductive, sadistic and elegantly depraved, Byzantium is an unabashedly stylish addition to a timeless genre.” Piers Handling, Toronto International Film Festival

Point Blank Sun 11 + Tue 13 AugUSA/1967/91mins/18. Dir: John Boorman. With: Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson.

After being double-crossed and left for dead in the depths of Alcatraz, a mysterious man single-mindedly tries to retrieve the rather inconsequential sum of money that was stolen from him. A kaleidoscopic neo-noir with a career best performance from Lee Marvin as Walker, descending into the corrupt concrete hell of LA.

ChinatownSun 18 + Tue 20 AugUSA/1974/130mins/15. Dir: Roman Polanski. With: Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, John Huston.

Private eye Jack Gittes specialises in sordid adultery cases in the dry heat of 1930s Los Angeles. Hired by Evelyn Mulwray to check on her husband Hollis, Jake gets the goods but finds himself set up for a fall. Sticking his nose into a complex web of corruption, he discovers that all roads lead to the secretive, murky world of Chinatown; more of a state of mind than a destination, and that the birth of the American dream is a bloody, dirty business.

“Caustic, daring and horrifically shocking...Chinatown still retains the power to bruise and scar to this day.” Little White Lies

Only God ForgivesFri 23 Aug — Thu 5 Sep USA/2013/90mins/18. Dir: Nicholas Winding Refn. With: Ryan Gosling, Kristen Scott Thomas, Yayaying Rhhatha Phongam.

Julian is respected in Bangkok’s criminal underworld, running a boxing club as a front for drug smuggling with his violent brother Billy. When Billy is murdered their crime-lord matriarch Jenna compels him to find and kill whoever is responsible and ‘raise hell’, but there is a sword-carrying cop on his trail. A queasy, tense nightmare with a neon-sheen, from the director and star of Drive.

The World’s EndFri 23 — Thu 29 Aug UK/2013/109mins/15. Dir: Edgar Wright. With: Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike, Nick Frost.

20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are persuaded to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.

RepulsionSun 25 + Tue 27 AugUK/1965/105mins/15. Dir: Roman Polanski. With: Catherine Deneuve, Ian Hedry, John Fraser, Yvonne Furneaux.

Carol, a beautiful but cripplingly shy young Belgian woman is left alone in a Kensington flat when her worldly sister goes on holiday with her obnoxious boyfriend. Carol’s already consuming fear of sex develops into a neurotic horror and fascination of dirt and decay that escalates into agoraphobia and paranoia. This scabrous, deeply disturbing nightmare of swinging 60s London with a clattering free jazz score from Chico Hamilton was Polanski’s first film in English and brought a European sensibility to the kitchen-sink realism of British film.

World War ZFri 30 Aug — Thu 5 SepUSA/2013/116mins/15. Dir: Marc Foster. With: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Peter Capaldi.

Gerry, a former U.N. investigator is pulled into his old profession when a zombie apocalypse threatens to destroy the world. With a virologist and a military team in tow he dashes around the globe in search of patient zero, finding previous world powers pushed aside in the battle to kill or cure the human race. An intelligent, impressive thriller with an emphasis on geopolitics rather than gore, anchored by a solid central performance from producer and actor Brad Pitt.

The Bling RingFri 2 — Thu 8 Aug USA/2013/87mins/15. Dir: Sofia Coppola. With: Emma Watson, Claire Julien, Gavin Rossdale.

In the fame-obsessed world of Los Angeles, a group of teenagers take us on a thrilling and disturbing crime-spree in the Hollywood hills. Based on true events, the teenagers fixated on the glamorous life of stars such as Paris Hilton. Coveting and stealing luxury goods from their homes, they were dubbed “The Bling Ring” by the media whilst still at large. Sofia Coppola immerses the viewer in this breezy, shallow world, where what begins as youthful fun spins out of control, revealing a sobering view of our modern culture.

Madame DeSun 4 + Tue 6 AugFrance/1953/105mins/subtitles/U. Dir: Max Ophüls. With: Danielle Darrieux, Charles Boyer, Vittoria de Sica.

Andre and Louise, a general and his wife in fin-de-siècle Paris are a fashionable couple whose respective dalliances and misdeeds become unavoidable with the dizzying pattern of coincidence drawn by a pair of diamond earrings. Originally a wedding gift, the earrings are sold, gifted, resold and re-gifted back to Madame De with heart-breaking consequences. A gripping, elegant tale with immaculate storytelling and incredible camerawork. Ophüls effortlessly crafted one of the greats of pre-New Wave French filmmaking.

“Gem-hard, crystalline and superbly impervious.” J Hoberman, Village Voice

Days of GraceFri 2 — Thu 8 AugMexico/2013/133mins/subtitles/15. Dir: Everado Valerio Gout. With: Tenoch Huerta, Kristian Ferrer.

In Mexico City during the World Cup it is traditional for both cops and criminals to let their guard down, but not Lupo. A muscular young cop exuding intensity and honesty, he will stop at nothing to catch his man. As we see Lupo and the criminals he targets through their respective volatile careers and a trio of World Cups, we see that in this violent world, redemption is harder to achieve than revenge. An impressive debut presenting a dizzying, colour-popping, trench-eye view of the Mexican drug wars.

The DeepFri 2 — Thu 8 AugIceland/2012/93mins/subtitles/12A. Dir: Baltasar Kormákur. With: Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.

In 1984, a fishing boat capsizes several miles off the south coast of Iceland. Gulli and his fellow seamen are left fighting for survival in the freezing cold waters. The film follows Gulli on his miraculous attempt to swim to safety in the battering and relentless ice-cold ocean. Naturalistic, atmospheric and inspiring, the story acts like a modern Icelandic saga where a man ends up with the deep below him, the sky above him and his only option is to swim or die.Iceland’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film for the 2013 Oscars.

“Kormákur has fashioned a film rooted in the real, yet somehow as awe-inspiring as any stories about mythical trolls, fairies or epic battles.” Steve Gravestock, Toronto International Film Festival

Breathe InFri 9 — Thu 15 Aug USA/2012/98mins/15. Dir: Drake Doremus. With: Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Amy Ryan.

When a beautiful British exchange student arrives to spend a term with a Manhattan family, her presence begins to rattle their shaky foundations. Former rock musician, Keith, teaches music locally and is pinning his hopes for professional fulfillment on an imminent audition for a chair with the New York symphony. When the strikingly pretty and talented Sophie arrives, they form a creative bond. Director, Doremus (Like Crazy) confirms his knack for pinpointing subtle emotional tremors on his characters’ fragile personal landscapes.

“A nuanced look at a New York family.” Hollywood Reporter

From Up on Poppy Hill Fri 9 — Thu 15 Aug Japan/2011/91mins/Japanese with subtitles for evening performances, dubbed for matinees/U. Dir: Goro Miyazaki.

Umi, a young girl whose father has been missing at sea for some years, strikes up a relationship with a young man at her school. Together they attempt to save the school club house from demolition by petitioning a wealthy school patron to come to their aid. As the children draw closer together they uncover a hidden past between their families, which at once brings them closer and drives them painfully apart. An emotionally complex, gripping tale set in a beautifully rendered world with incredible attention to detail, this is one of the most satisfying films from Ghibli in years.

BlancanievesFri 16 — Thu 29 AugSpain/2012/105mins/silent with inter-titles/12A. Dir: Pablo Berger. With: Maribel Verdú, Daniel Giménez Cacho, Angela Molina.

Drawing on Grimm’s Snow White, this is a visually stunning and bloody adult tale of a little girl who grows up to fight for her place in the world. Tragedy strikes twice when bullfighter Antonio is paralyzed in the ring and his beloved wife dies giving birth to their daughter Carmen. He marries the heartless gold digger Encama and teaches Carmen the art of bullfighting. Fed up with an invalid husband, Encama has him killed and Carmen is left for dead until she is discovered by Los Enanitos Toreros, a troupe of dwarf bullfighters.

Frances Ha Fri 16 — Thu 22 Aug USA/2012/86mins/15. Dir: Noah Baumbach. With: Greta Gerwig, Mickey Sumner, Adam Driver.

Frances is at a crossroads in her mid-twenties, living in New York and looking back at her college glory days as she deals with growing up and paying the bills in the least humiliating way possible. Throwing herself into her dream career as a dancer, the possibilities dwindle and she watches her friends either sorting their lives out or remain stuck in perpetual immaturity. Despite the uncertainty, Frances lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness. A sensitive modern comic fable of an ordinary person struggling with the dull realities of growing up, exploring New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure and redemption.

WadjdaFri 16 — Thu 22 Aug Saudi Arabia/2012/97mins/subtitles/PG. Dir: Haifaa Al Mansour. With: Reem Abdullah, Waad Mohammed, Abdullrahman Al Gohani.

Lit up by an utterly disarming central performance, this is an appealing, heartfelt gem that will give you a rare glimpse into everyday Saudi society. Smart, strong-willed, tomboy Wadjda is often in trouble as she chafes at her life’s restrictions, stopping at nothing to earn the money to buy a bike. To shoot a film in a country where cinemas themselves have been banned for over thirty years is an achievement for any director. When that filmmaker also happens to be a woman, in a country where it is illegal for women to drive, let alone direct, it’s all the more impressive.

“Boundary-pushing cinema in all the best ways.” Telegraph

What Maisie KnewFri 30 Aug — Thu 5 SepUSA/2013/99mins/ctba. Dir: Scott McGehee, David Siegel. With: Julianne Moore, Steve Coogan, Alexander Skarsgard.

In this powerful contemporary update of the Henry James novel, we meet Maisie, a little girl with newly divorced parents; fading rock star Susanne and British art dealer Beale. The ex-lovers compete for custody, more to score points against each other than for her well-being. Their respective new partners are caught in the middle of this narcissistic display but are unprepared to take responsibility for the child. A luminous performance from newcomer Onata Aprile and a biting look at modern family life.

The Paradise TrilogyOriginally conceived as a single five hour film by Ulrich Seidl, the trilogy follows a middle-aged single mother, a devoutly religious sister, and the overweight 13-year old daughter of the same family, each trying to realise their unfulfilled dreams and desires.

Paradise: LoveMon 19 — Thu 22 AugAustria/2013/120mins/subtitles/18. Dir: Ulrich Seidl. With: Margarete Tiesel, Peter Kazungu, Inge Maux.

Middle-aged Teresa heads to Kenya with friends, to laze in the sun, drink cocktails and hopefully find romance. However, the resort they have chosen happens to be a haven for sex tourists. An uncomfortable and powerful comment on the cyclical nature of exploitation, featuring an incredibly brave central performance by Tiesel as a woman craving someone to make her feel special but looking in all the wrong places.

Paradise: FaithFri 23 — Sun 25 AugAustria/2013/113mins/subtitles/18. Dir: Ulrich Seidl. With: Maria Hofstatter, Nabil Saleh, Natalya Baranova.

Here we meet Teresa’s sister Anna Maria who devotes her spare time to missionary work and has found paradise in Catholicism. She goes from door to door carrying a statue of the Virgin Mary and imposes her beliefs on all she encounters. She believes that she is giving herself wholly to Jesus, but when her husband, a crippled Egyptian Muslim comes back to the family home he expects a share of her love.

Paradise: HopeMon 26 — Thu 29 AugAustria/2013/88mins/subtitles/18. Dir: Ulrich Seidl. With: Melanie Lenz, Verena Lahbauer, Joseph Lorenz.

The final film in the trilogy is set at a weight loss camp for preteens run by rather humourless disciplinarians. While her mother is in Kenya, Melanie has a great time at the camp, despite the oppressive climate, and forms some close friendships. Developing a crush on the camp director, Melanie struggles with the disappointment of reality and her imagined paradise.

Behind the Candelabra Fri 19 July — Thu 1 AugUSA/2013/118mins/15. Dir: Steven Soderbergh. With: Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Rob Lowe, Dan Akroyd, Debbie Reynolds.

Before Elvis, Elton John, Madonna and Lady Gaga, there was Liberace; virtuoso pianist, outrageous entertainer and flamboyant star of stage and television. Liberace lived lavishly and embraced a lifestyle of excess both on and off stage. In the summer of 1977, handsome young stranger Scott Thorson walked into his dressing room and, despite their age difference and seemingly different worlds, the two embarked on a secretive five-year love affair.

My Father and the Man in Black Fri 9 — Thu 15 Aug Canada/2013/87mins/15. Dir: Jonathan Holiff.

Jonathan Holiff rarely saw his father Saul when he was growing up and when he did it wasn’t fun. Saul was the talented but troubled manager of legend Johnny Cash; responsible for pairing him with June Carter, he saw him through the pill-popping ‘60s right through to his religious conversion. After his father’s death, Jonathan goes to a storage lockup and finds a treasure trove of recordings, letters and memorabilia that takes him on a journey of rediscovering his father and the career of Johnny Cash. A thrilling documentary with some extraordinary raw moments from the Cash archives.

Pussy Riot: A Punk PrayerFri 16 + Sat 17 AugRussia/UK/2013/90mins/subtitles/18 . Dir: Mike Lerner, Maxim Pozdorovkin.

Dressed in pastel jumpsuits and neon ski masks, brandishing guitars like weapons, three young women at the core of the Pussy Riot movement in Moscow were sentenced to seven years in prison for a satirical performance in a Moscow cathedral. Their arrest divided Russia, highlighting corruption at the heart of the church and the oppression of the Putin regime as they embraced fame as feminist superstars. Nadia Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich remain calm and defiant as legal proceedings begin and the filmmakers look at their origins and reasons for protest.

Noys R Us at Bogiez Rock Bar and NightclubChapter Cinema, in association with Bogiez Rock Bar and Nightclub, brings you Noys R Us Film Night. Dig!Sun 25 AugUSA/2004/107mins/15. Dir: Ondi Timoner. Doors 6.00pm, film 7 .00pm

Indie rock history doesn’t involve many inter-musician feuds, but even in this kinder, gentler, world, tempers and egos can get out of control. Dig! documents the rivalry between the Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Starting out as friends, as the film progresses, the disparity in the bands success turns the relationship toxic, with explosive results. The Dandys enjoy massive European popularity, while TBJM botch countless opportunities and break up several times. Dig!‘s true star is TBJM frontman Anton Newcombe, a cartoonish caricature of every negative stereotype associated with rock musicians; a fey, megalomaniacal, occasionally violent, drug addict with just enough charm to attract followers. Suffice to say, his performance alone is worth the price of admission.Tickets are £5 and can be purchased through www.chapter.org and at Bogiez.

Go Faster StripeWe’ve teamed up with the Go Faster Stripe crowd to bring you some of the finest new comedy around. Many of these performances were filmed here at Chapter, enjoy! www.gofasterstripe.com

The Moo ManFri 9 — Thu 15 Aug UK/2013/98mins/ctba. Dir: Andy Heathcote, Heike Bachelier.

Dairy farming is indelibly linked to the British countryside and this timely documentary examines how high production for supermarkets has disrupted the links with farming and nature. Farmer Stephen Hook decides to buck the trend and chooses to keep his small, compassionate family farm going at a point when big super dairies are trying their best to get a stronghold in the UK. A heart-warming, gentle and surprisingly funny look at the incredible bonds between man and animal in this bucolic, bovine landscape that is at risk of disappearing forever. We will be joined by Andy Heathcote, the director and Steve the farmer for a post screening Q&A on 9th of August.

The Battle of the SexesTue 27 AugUK/2013/83mins/PG. Dir: Zara Hayes, James Erskine.

In 1973 retired pro tennis player Bobby Riggs chauvinistically challenged the women’s champion Billie Jean King to a famous tennis duel, to prove once and for all that men were better than women. For the media, this was a welcome distraction from the horrors of Vietnam and Watergate, and for women an opportunity to take a step towards equality. Combining footage with contemporary interviews with players past and present we relive how this match changed sport forever.

When the Dragon Swallowed the SunFri 30 Aug — Thu 5 SepUSA/2010/115mins/ctba. Dir: Dirk Simon. With: Richard Gere, The Dalai Lama.

As economic interests make an open China an alluring possibility for Western governments, possible human rights violations are swept aside. The lack of progress towards an autonomous Tibet urges more of its people to consider the Dalai Lama’s controversial Middle Way Policy, a compromise on independence. With interviews from prominent speakers in the Buddhist community as well as other world leaders, this is a look at the complexity of the struggle with an incredible soundtrack by Philip Glass and Thom Yorke amongst others.

The completed animations will be posted on our website. For information on all learning activities, please see our website www.chapter.org/learning-and-participation
