Registration – shows ownership

B. No registration with you - $100 fine◦Unregistered vehicle – 1 year suspension

C. Must register your vehicle – Every year – You are responsible ◦Mail or go to DMV

D. Price of Registration – Depends on the “Class” of the vehicle◦“CLASS” = Year and Weight

E. To register a vehicle:

◦1. 17 years old◦2. 6 points of identification◦3. Application◦4. Insurance◦5. Ownership papers◦6. Sales tax

When you move into NJ you have

License Plates

A.Front and Back – matching platesB.Between 12” – 48” from the groundC.Purchase when you first register your

vehicle

E. Rear Plate – must have a light

F. Lost or Damaged – replace within 24 hours

Both plates must be clean and visible.

Using license plate covers or holders that obscure or conceal any lettering on the license plate is a violation, with a fine up to $100.

Stolen or Lost plates should be reported to the POLICE.

G. Turn in old plates to M.V.

InspectionA.Every two years at a state inspection

facility or a state-licensed private inspection facility.

C. New Car – 5 years before inspection

D. Used Car or Out of State Car: 14 days from registration to get inspection

E. Sticker – lower driver side of windshield ◦Color = Year◦Number = Month

White Sticker – Car dealerships

Red Sticker – failure (30 days for repairs)

Insurance:

◦Mandatory - Every vehicle registered in New Jersey must have liability insurance

◦A New Jersey Insurance Identification Card will be provided for each vehicle insured under a policy. This card must remain in the vehicle with the driver.

Driving with an uninsured vehicle can result in fines, community service, license and registration suspension and violation surcharges.
