New Jersey Motorists• Must: Title and Register vehicle before
legally driving on roads.>Title-Proof of ownership
• Must: Always have registration available.• New State Residents: required to title &
register each vehicle within 60 days of moving into NJ or 60 days before of out of state document expire.
How to Title a New Vehicle• Obtain – Dealership
or manufacturer’s certificate of origin ( check for sales tax satisfied’ stamp on back)

How to Title a Used Vehicle
• Complete Reverse Side of title —*Buyer’s name*Address*Signature*Date of sale*Odometer reading*Sales Price
Complete sales tax section (taxes 7% on purchase price)
Title – Used Vehicle Continued• Present –
• signed title• sales tax form• sales tax fee• proof of sales tax payment
• Pay Title Fee • Avoid $25 penalty by transferring title
within 10 business days of sale• Transfering vehicle ownership
How to Complete an Initial Registration• At MVC –
- complete application (include – insurance company & personal policy number)
• Out-of-State – secure original title (lien holder or leasing company)
• Proof of ownership - *New car – manufacturer’s cert. of origin & dealer’s cert. of sale*Used car – title signed by previous owner*Leased car – secure power of attorney (legal document that gives someone you choose the power to act in your place) from leasing company
• Show proof of all sales tax!!!• Registration
Registration Renewal
• MVC mails it 2 months in advance• Go to any Motor Vehicle Agency• Mail it back in• Complete it online• Registration renewal
General Registration Info.
• 17 years old• $173 fine for driving without a
current registration• Must be renewed every year.
License Plate Facts• Report lost or
stolen to police• Get copy of
complaint• 24 hours to
replace at MVC
• Out-of-Use – return to MVC or inspection station (get and keep
receipt)• $500 fine, 60 days
imprisonment & driver suspension of
up to 6 months if forged/counterfeit plates are used.

-the inspection is good for 5 years.
- Therefore, after the initial 5 years are up every 2 years the vehicle will need to be inspected.
• Used vehicles- every 2 years
>Out of State – 14 days after registration
• Expired Sticker or No Sticker
*$100 - $200 fine*Up to 30 days imprisonment
